Scholarship of Metropolitan Mission

What an encouraging development a University of Nebraska at Omaha professor describes in a Midlands Voices essay today. UNO, she explains, is working with small-business owners in north Omaha to improve their computer and telecommunications skills.

As noted by Sajda Qureshi, an associate professor in UNO's College of Information Science and Technology, the project has benefited a variety of "microenterprises" in north Omaha. Among the different types of businesses helped: a delicatessen, tutoring services, a massage therapist, a cake decorator, a pet groomer, a modeling agency and a house for inmates re-entering society.

On The Merits Of Voxel-Based Morphometric Path-Analysis For Investigating Volumetric Mediation Of A Toxicant's Influence On Cognitive Function, Shu-Chih Su, Brian S. Caffo, Lynn E. Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

We previously showed that lifetime cumulative lead dose, measured as lead concentration in the tibia bone by X-ray fluorescence, was associated with persistent and progressive declines in cognitive function and with decreases in MRI-based brain volumes in former lead workers. Moreover, larger region-specific brain volumes were associated with better cognitive function. These findings motivated us to explore a novel application of path analysis to evaluate effect mediation. Voxel-wise path analysis, at face value, represents the natural evolution of voxel-based morphometry methods to answer questions of mediation. Application of these methods to the former lead worker data demonstrated potential limitations in …

Improving Resolution Of Census Data In Metropolitan Areas Using A Dasymetric Approach: Applications For The Baltimore Ecosystem Study, Christopher G. Boone Jan 2008

Improving Resolution Of Census Data In Metropolitan Areas Using A Dasymetric Approach: Applications For The Baltimore Ecosystem Study, Christopher G. Boone

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

A dasymetric map is a type of thematic map where boundaries are altered by the distribution of other phenomena. In dasymetric maps, administrative or enumeration boundaries are redrawn to better represent the distribution of data classes. Dasymetric mapping methods can improve the resolution of historical and present day census data. Using data collected for the Baltimore Ecosystem Study, I use the dasymetric approach to remap the distribution of census data based on residential land use. By overlaying census boundaries with land use and land cover information in a GIS database, census data can be partitioned into places where, from the …

Urban Growth, Community, And The Environment: An Experiential Pedagogy, Mark T. Mulder, Don Degraaf

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

Some scholars have described urban sprawl as America's most pressing environmental issue. As educators we are acutely interested in unearthing new methods for engaging students in these types of topics. In this paper we describe a unique interdisciplinary and experiential course that we have designed to introduce students of various academic programs to the attendant issues of urban sprawl.

A Response To John Sommerville’S 'The Decline Of The Secular University', William Vance Trollinger Jan 2008

A Response To John Sommerville’S 'The Decline Of The Secular University', William Vance Trollinger

History Faculty Publications

Introduction to William Vance Trollinger's plenary presentation:

I agree with Prof. Sommerville that in too many places the secular university has trivialized religion and religious commitment, and that it is high time for religion to be welcomed into our academic debates. I say this even while I take issue with some of the particulars in Prof. Sommerville’s book. I will give two examples related to our discipline of history.

First, Prof. Sommerville decries that “secularist humanities have declared war on metanarratives because of their hegemonic power.” But I confess that I am very pleased to see the demise of metanarratives …

Implications On Rural Adult Learning In The Absence Of Broadband Internet, J. Kirk Atkinson Jan 2008

Implications On Rural Adult Learning In The Absence Of Broadband Internet, J. Kirk Atkinson

Analytics & Information Systems Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study was to establish a deeper understanding of the educational needs of rural-based learners within the context of online learning opportunities. It was hoped to ascertain whether rural learner’s needs differ in terms of learning choices from that of their urban counterparts. The basis for the urban examples is based totally upon available literature. This study is particularly interested in identifying predictors for why rural learners choose to participate in online based adult and community education using a case study approach. Seven themes were identified during this study and are presented as a model for potential …

A Dimensional Model Of Psychopathology Among Homeless Adolescents: Suicidality, Internalizing, And Externalizing Disorders, Kevin A. Yoder, Susan L. Longley, Les B. Whitbeck, Dan R. Hoyt Jan 2008

A Dimensional Model Of Psychopathology Among Homeless Adolescents: Suicidality, Internalizing, And Externalizing Disorders, Kevin A. Yoder, Susan L. Longley, Les B. Whitbeck, Dan R. Hoyt

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

The present study examined associations among dimensions of suicidality and psychopathology in a sample of 428 homeless adolescents (56.3% female). Confirmatory factor analysis results provided support for a three-factor model in which suicidality (measured with lifetime suicidal ideation and suicide attempts), internalizing disorders (assessed with lifetime diagnoses of major depressive episode and post-traumatic stress disorder), and externalizing disorders (indicated by lifetime diagnoses of conduct disorder, alcohol abuse, and drug abuse) were positively intercorrelated. The findings illustrate the utility of a dimensional approach that integrates suicidality and psychopathology into one model.

Critical Impairments To Globalizing The Western Human Rights Discourse, Nikitah O. Imani Jan 2008

Critical Impairments To Globalizing The Western Human Rights Discourse, Nikitah O. Imani

Black Studies Faculty Publications

This article focuses on the philosophical implications of Euro-centrism and Eurocentric discourse for the Western human rights narrative. It is argued that there is insufficient theoretical and practical consideration of those implications, particular for advocacy and activity in the so-called “Third World” where such arguments frequently become mere vehicles for the advance of economic and political neocolonialism. In many ways, colonialism with a humanistic, liberal democratic “face”. Finally, a proposition is advanced that if the Western human rights discourse is to be effectively corrected and evolve into a global one, critiques of Euro-centrism from outside the Western discursive world must …

Accepting Droit De Site As An Equal And Fair Measure Under Intellectual Property Law And Contemplation Of Its Implementation In The United States Post Passage Of The Eu Directive, Mara Grumbo Jan 2008

Accepting Droit De Site As An Equal And Fair Measure Under Intellectual Property Law And Contemplation Of Its Implementation In The United States Post Passage Of The Eu Directive, Mara Grumbo

UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal

This note will argue that while many criticisms against droit de suite legislation are based on economic grounds, these grounds are not those on which the royalty is and should be based. These arguments miss the mark by focusing on the inadequacy of the economic value of the royalty rather than viewing droit de suite as a "moral rights" based measure, providing visual artists fair and equal protection under intellectual property law. Once one accepts the latter view and understands the royalty as a measure necessary to remedy the unjust treatment of visual artists under copyright law, the inadequate state …
