Following A Recipe: When Op-Ed Pieces On China Go Wrong
Following A Recipe: When Op-Ed Pieces On China Go Wrong
China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012
British Prime Minister Gordon Brown is visiting Beijing and the Daily Telegraph has a dour op-ed piece written by Bruce Anderson in today’s edition. Anderson argues that China’s reemergence as a great power is not nearly as worrisome as the prospect of China’s failure.
“If China succeeds, there will be a price. The West would lose power. But Chinese success is much the lesser evil. Imagine what would happen if that huge and powerfully armed nation became a failed state.”
Fair as it goes. China is a large, powerful, and nuclear-armed nation. A collapse of the Chinese state would likely …

University of Mississippi News
OXFORD, Miss. - Gabriel Wrobel said he's never met a skeleton he didn't know. Why? Because every skeleton he meets whispers secrets about the life and death of its owner. Bones can tell Wrobel who the person was, their age and, sometimes, what they did for a living.

Entrepreneurship As Emergence, Benyamin B. Lichtenstein
Entrepreneurship As Emergence, Benyamin B. Lichtenstein
College of Management Working Papers and Reports
Emergence is at the core of entrepreneurship research, which has explored the coming-intobeing of opportunities, new organizations, re-organizations, and new industries, agglomerations, and so on. Emergence is also at the theoretical core of complexity science, which is essentially dedicated to exploring how and why emergence happens in dynamic systems (like entrepreneurship). This exploration begins by defining Opportunity In-tension as a dynamic interplay of personal agency and perceived opportunity, which is a catalyst for entrepreneurial behavior. Then I propose two insights about emergence, based on recent research in complexity science. First, a process theory for emergence is presented, which integrates Gartner’s …
Re-Islamization In Higher Education From Above And Below: The University Of South Florida And Its Global Contexts, Terri K. Wonder
Re-Islamization In Higher Education From Above And Below: The University Of South Florida And Its Global Contexts, Terri K. Wonder
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study explores Islamism's interplay with higher education as the movement advances an agenda for worldwide reformation. Over an eighty-year period, Islamism has appropriated higher education institutions, professional associations, on- and off-campus organizations, and publications as a primary means to achieve its utopian objective of the Nizam Islami, or "Islamic Order." Findings show how the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt developed a Weberian bureaucratic organizational and administrative structure to exert influence not only in Egypt but also the world. A Qutb-inspired "hijra" of Muslim Brothers in universities proved itself adroit at filling macro-and micro-level policy vacuums in Soviet-aligned post-colonial societies, marginalizing …

Information Security Governance And Boards Of Directors: Are They Compatible?, Endre Bihari
Information Security Governance And Boards Of Directors: Are They Compatible?, Endre Bihari
Australian Information Security Management Conference
This paper presents a critique of emergent views on the roles of the boards of directors in relation to information security. The analysis highlights several concerns about the separation and validation of proper theory and business assertions of information security at board level. New requirements articulated by industry bodies – represented by a selected group of experts and evident in literature – are compared to the underlying theory of corporate governance to identify possible discrepancies. The discussion shows in particular the importance of staying within the theoretical underpinnings of corporate governance when discussing the topic of governance in general and …

Tales From The Crypt: Scientific, Ethical, And Legal Considerations For Biohistorical Analysis Of Deceased Historical Figures, Lori B. Andrews, Jordan K. Paradise
All Faculty Scholarship
Biohistorical analysis involves using historic specimens of human remains or human material extracted or derived from historical artifacts to gather evidence about specimens that are identifiable or at least attributed to a historic figure at the time of the research. Biohistorical studies are being undertaken for myriad reasons, such as identification and authentication of remains, investigation into alleged criminal behavior, investigation into medical or psychological conditions, and even for purposes of commercialization. This article analyzes federal statutes, case law, and codes and guidelines from twenty-six professional organizations and societies informative to the field of biohistory. We surveyed the field, identified …
