Simulation And Scenarios Of A Social Science Concept On Urban Shrinkage, A. Haase, Dagmar Haase, S. Kabisch
Simulation And Scenarios Of A Social Science Concept On Urban Shrinkage, A. Haase, Dagmar Haase, S. Kabisch
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
In our paper the hypothesis is tested whether current demographic decline, de-economisation and structural crisis are bringing about a new evolving type of urban development. In doing so, we present a novel social science concept of urban shrinkage that goes beyond the focussed population-related view of shrinkage (Kabisch et al., 2006). It rather comprises the features of non-growth, on-going sprawl and upcoming reurbanisation alike, or if reurbanisation represents, on the other hand, merely a short interplay in a long-term period of desurbanisation under the condition of demographic change and decrease in population: the core city is gradually shrinking because of …
Multi-Agent Models For Teaching, Extension And Collaborative Learning, Thomas Berger, Pepijn Schreinemachers
Multi-Agent Models For Teaching, Extension And Collaborative Learning, Thomas Berger, Pepijn Schreinemachers
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
This paper describes an agent-based land use modeling approach, called MPMAS,developed at Hohenheim University. The main focus of this approach is theintegration of economic decision-models with biophysical models of water supply and soilfertility at a fine spatial resolution. Short-term production and consumption decisions ofagents are represented as mathematical programming problems, whereas longer-termdecisions, for example investment and migration, are represented using heuristics. Here, weposition the approach in relation to alternative agent-based models of land use and watermanagement and describe empirical applications to Chile, Uganda, Ghana, and Thailand.Based on these practical experiences, we discuss the use of MP-MAS as a tool forcollaborative …

Community-Based Software Tools To Support Participatory Modelling: A Vision, Alexey Voinov, David Arctur, Ilya Zaslavskiy, Saleem Ali
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Environmental management depends on analysis of complex dynamics and spatialrelationships of ecological and socio-economic systems. Modelling, when used to conduct suchanalyses, is recognized as an effective decision support tool in environmental management.Modelling conducted in a participatory fashion, involving stakeholders in various stages ofmodel building and data processing has evolved as an efficient method for conflict resolutionand decision-making. However, successful participatory modelling efforts require specificsoftware and computer tools that are not available or accessible for stakeholders. There is aclear need for specialized modelling and data processing infrastructure that would allowcomprehensive environmental simulations, based on limited computer programming skills, computer power, and data …
Knowledge Workers And The Knowledge Economy, David Thorns, Hong Wang
Knowledge Workers And The Knowledge Economy, David Thorns, Hong Wang
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
The paper examines the growth of a new group of workers – knowledge workersseen as critical for the growth of knowledge based economy. The emphasis in much of theliterature is upon formal codified knowledge. This focus does not adequately deal with tacitknowledge which is acquired in informal ways from experience and engagement withothers. Further when issues of measurement are considered it is around information ratherthan knowledge that most measures have been based. Currently there is no internationalagreement on the definition of the ICT sector. The paper reviews definitions adopted by theOECD to show that problem with spillovers from the ICT …
From Ingis To Namos – Operationalisation And Contextualisation Of Sustainability At The Local Level, D. Rink, A. Haase, S. Kabisch, Dagmar Haase, G. Hartmuth
From Ingis To Namos – Operationalisation And Contextualisation Of Sustainability At The Local Level, D. Rink, A. Haase, S. Kabisch, Dagmar Haase, G. Hartmuth
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Due to its fuzziness the model of sustainable development has to be particularised and contextualised before any positioning with respect to the yardstick of sustainability. Based on a newly put forward conceptualisation of sustainability the realisation of both postulates is shown within the development of a local indicator system for two German cities. Initially, problems of urban development were identified in a bottom-up approach by local stakeholders. These problem areas were contrasted with a set of sustainability rules which had been systematically derived from the basic sustainability norm, stating minimum requirements for sustainable development. At the interface of local problems …

Go East: A Residential Land Use Model For The Periphery Of Rome, G. L. Ciampaglia, B. Tirozzi
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
In this paper we present a model of urban growth and its preliminary application to acase study of the phenomena of residential development in the setting of the eastern periphery ofRome, Italy’s capital city. The modeling approach we use synthesises the two typical paradigmswidespread in the community of quantitative urban planning: the traditional one, based on cellularautomata (CA), and the (relatively) new one, which is agent-based. In particular, our multi-agentsystem (MAS) is in-between a reactive MAS, with agents carrying out a two-staged decision processin a complex environment, and a model of statistical physics, since we use populations ofagents in order …
Integrated Solution Support System For Water Management, Ayalew Kassahun, M. Blind, A. Krause, Onno Roosenschoon
Integrated Solution Support System For Water Management, Ayalew Kassahun, M. Blind, A. Krause, Onno Roosenschoon
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Solving water management problems involves technical, social, economic, political and legal challenges and thus requires an integrated approach involving people from different backgrounds and roles. The integrated approach has been given a prominent role within the European Union’s Water Framework Directive (WFD). The WFD requires an integrated approach in water management to achieve good ecological status of all water bodies. It consists amongst others of the following main planning stages: describing objectives, assessing present state, identifying gaps between objectives and present state, developing management plan, implementing measures and evaluating their impacts. The directive prescribes broad participation and consultation to achieve …

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Recent uneven land use dynamics in urban areas resulting from demographic change, economic pressure and the cities’ mutual competition in a globalising world challenge both scientists and practitioners, among them social scientists, modellers and spatial planners. Processes of growth and decline specifically affect the urban environment, the requirements of the residents on social and natural resources. Social and environmental research is interested in a better understanding and ways of explaining the interactions between society and landscape in urban areas. And it is also needed for making life in cities attractive, secure and affordable within or despite of uneven dynamics. The …

Education Faculty Articles and Research
In several previous Issues In-Depth columns, science topics deeply affected by population size--such as climate change, fuel and agricultural resources, and ecology--have been discussed. In this column, we will discuss the issue of population growth in developed and developing countries, why this is an important topic to discuss with young adolescents, and how interdisciplinary connections can be made between science and several other subject areas through an examination of populations across the globe.

The goal of this study was to investigate cross-sectional associations between features of neighborhoods and hypertension and to examine the sensitivity of results to various methods of estimating neighborhood conditions. Methods: We used data from the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis on 2612 individuals 45-85 years of age. Hypertension was defined as systolic blood pressure above 140 mm Hg, diastolic pressure above 90 mm Hg, or use of antihypertensive medications. Neighborhood (census tract) conditions potentially related to hypertension (walking environment, availability of healthy foods, safety, social cohesion) were measured using information from a separate phone survey conducted in the study neighborhoods. …

Globalization And Housing Rights, Padraic Kenna
Globalization And Housing Rights, Padraic Kenna
Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies
This article seeks to explore the relationship between the growing phenomenon of globalization and the field of housing rights. I begin with a general description of globalization, and move on to discuss its effect on homelessness, and on housing systems across the world. I examine the role of global corporations; the globalization of housing finance and real estate investment; the reordering of cities and slums; the idea of the minimalist state; and the effects of privatization. I examine the rise of governance networks and how they have created new patterns of making law; globalization's effect on housing policy; and its …
Reduce Late Assignments Through Classroom Presentations, Cole Hilker
Reduce Late Assignments Through Classroom Presentations, Cole Hilker
Action Research Projects
In this action research study of my 7th grade math class, I investigated homework presentations, to see if they would reduce the amount of late homework assignments. I did not find any significant results that weekly presentations given by students were beneficial to reduce the amount of late assignments, but found many other positive things that happened because of presentations. As a result of this research, I plan to use classroom presentations because they foster listening skills and student interaction, and promote deeper thinking.

Data Note: Employment Rates In The General Population And Vr Rehabilitation Rates, Alberto Migliore
Data Note Series, Institute for Community Inclusion
The Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) program plays a critical role in assisting people with disabilities gaining integrated employment. In 2006, for instance, 48,876 people with intellectual or developmental disabilities (ID/DD) exited the VR program after receiving services, with 56% of those who received services finding jobs in integrated employment. This percentage, known as the VR Rehabilitation Rate, varied from 42% in Hawaii to 77% in Maryland, if excluding the figure in Oklahoma where the VR rehabilitation rate was 22%.

The Anti-Network: Private Global Governance, Legal Knowledge, And The Legitimacy Of The State, Annelise Riles
The Anti-Network: Private Global Governance, Legal Knowledge, And The Legitimacy Of The State, Annelise Riles
Cornell Law Faculty Publications
Global private law has become the source of both anxiety and euphoria. Inherent in this fascination is the assumption that global private law threatens the legitimacy of the state by taking over its functions through new techniques of governance. In this article, I build upon research in one arena of global private governance, the production of legal documentation for the global swap markets, to challenge the most prominent assumptions about private law beyond the state. I argue that rather than focusing on how global private law is or is not an artifact of state power, a body of private norms, …
