This study addressed the problem of students with autism being placed in regular education classrooms and the lack of support of regular educators toward this practice. This research study was based upon the theoretical construct of attitude. Attitude is an important concept related to inclusion as teacher expectations and attitude affect student performance. This research study examined teacher attitude toward inclusion of students with autism based upon years of teaching experience, current teaching placement, gender, previous experience with inclusion, and amount of training regarding autism. The purpose of this study is to explore the reasons why child welfare social workers choose to stay working in child protection as their long-term professional career. Twenty-two career child welfare social workers' perceptions of their long-term employment were examined. If these reasons can be identified, child welfare agencies could possibly develop hiring processes, training systems, and other organizational processes that would target and nurture the right social worker for the job. Beginning in 2006, the Shoreline Public School District in King County, Washington partnered with Shoreline Community College to offer an off-campus transition program for young adults with intellectual disabilities and developmental disabilities (ID/DD) residing in the Shoreline School District. While participants are still in high school, the Community Based Transition Program offers a structured transitional step between their traditional day and post-secondary education as well as employment in the community. Funding for the classroom space on the college campus, the special education teacher and the education support staff are all provided by the school district. The school also proposed that …

Sponsored by Wisconsin’s Department of Health and Family Services (DHFS) through the use of Medicaid Infrastructure Grant (MIG) funds, Wisconsin’s Job Development Mentors Project (JDMP) pairs three seasoned job developers with four community-based employment support providers that cover 12 counties throughout the state. JDMP is designed to create a state-wide infrastructure for professionals who are responsible for developing jobs for individuals in supported employment while at the same time, working towards increasing the pool of well-trained job developers around the state of Wisconsin.

School Counselors Walking The Walk And Talking The Talk: A Grounded Theory Of Effective Program Implementation, Janna L. Scarborough, Melissa Luke

Comprehensive, developmental school counseling programming has been associated with numerous benefits for students and is considered current best practice. A qualitative, grounded theory study was conducted to investigate eight professional school counselors employed across grade level, geographic setting, and region within the United States. This article presents this research and the emergent model for successful comprehensive, developmental school counseling program implementation. Implications for school counselor education and practice, as well as future research, are discussed.

The Effects Of Choice On Assignment Completion And Percent Correct By A High School Student With A Learning Disability, D. Stenhoff, B. J. Davey, Benjamin Lignugaris / Kraft

Special Education and Rehabilitation Counseling Faculty Publications

The effects of choosing between two academic assignments on task completion and percent correct by a ninth grade student with a learning disability was investigated. This case study extended the efficacy of antecedent based intervention as an instructional modification. Further, the study extends previous research by investigating the effect of choice on academic achievement. The withdrawal design showed that percent completed and correct were highest when the participant was given a choice between two assignments when compared to baseline conditions. Results are discussed in term of efficacy of choice as an antecedent intervention, choice selection, and future research directions.

The Rehabilitation Community Legacy Project: The Oral History Of Leadership, Michael J. Millington

Special Education and Rehabilitation Counseling Faculty Publications

The importance of engaging the rehabilitation profession in the collection and utilization of its oral history is illustrated through an example. A transcript from an interview with William Emener provides a first person narrative of events leading up to the first national rehabilitation counselor training conference in Crystal City, Virginia. Themes of community emerge in the telling and are used to compare and contrast to current situations in the field. The reader is invited to participate in the Rehabilitation Community Legacy Project as an act of personal leadership.
