Air Crew Alcohol And Drug Policies: A Survey Of Far Of Part 91 Corporate/Executive Flight Operations, Johnene Vardiman

Theses and Dissertations

Safety is a critical issues facing aviation today. The health of the pilot and the policies related to pilot well-being greatly contribute to the safety practices of flight. The purpose of this research study was to assess the status quo of unmandated, written alcohol and drug policies of corporate/executive flight departments operating under Part 91 of the Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs). Researchers found 68% of these operators had written general alcohol/drug, 20% had rehabilitation and 15% had job retention/recovery policies in place. Statistical tests showed that for each pilot added to the flight operation the odds of having a general …

Homegrown Terrorism: The Threat Within, Kimberley L. Thachuk, Marion E. “Spike” Bowman, Courtney Richardson

Defense and Technology Papers

This paper attempts to illustrate how difficult, if not impossible, it is to find root causes of domestic terrorism that are of general applicability. It is likely to be more important to focus on the unique cultural stamp of the individual nation to assess the reason for violence-prone disquietude among its citizens and residents.

Causative Factors Of Crashes Between A Motor Vehicle And The Amish And Old Order Mennonite Horse And Buggy, Cory Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

Horse and buggy transportation is spreading as rapidly as its Amish and Old Order Mennonite users are, as are buggy crashes with motor vehicles. This study examines the primary causes of 76 reported horse and buggy crashes in Pennsylvania in 2006. The main crash types identified include a motorist rear-ending a forward-moving buggy, motorist failing to pass a buggy, buggy struck while crossing an intersection, and buggy struck while making a left turn. While causative factors varied for each crash type, major factors include the motorist or buggy driver incorrectly comprehending speed differentials, the motorist acting carelessly around the buggy, …

Do Central Business District Redevelopment Investments Have A Positive Influence On Surrounding Neighborhoods, Amy M. Fauria May 2008

Do Central Business District Redevelopment Investments Have A Positive Influence On Surrounding Neighborhoods, Amy M. Fauria

Master's Projects

Observation of Oakland’s Central District Redevelopment Project Area, or Central District, leaves little question that the area within the project boundaries has been positively impacted by the redevelopment activities in the last several years. With respect to the parcel-level redevelopment in the Central District however, this study set out to explore the following questions:

1. Did the redevelopment investments in the Central District from 1990 through the end of 2006 positively impact the neighborhoods that surround the area, measured by an increase in the housing prices of single-family residences?

2. If so, did the rate of price appreciation decrease as …

Development Of Prediction Models Of High Temperature Crumb Rubber Modified Binders, Carl Thodesen May 2008

Development Of Prediction Models Of High Temperature Crumb Rubber Modified Binders, Carl Thodesen

All Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to identify and model critical elements of the asphalt rubber matrix contributing to the crumb rubber modified (CRM) binder properties as measured by Superpave testing procedures. Current models are neither applicable (due to new testing procedures) nor practical (due to the difficulty of application or lack of accuracy). Therefore, this research investigated the development of predictive models for estimating binder properties within a specified range of accuracy.
Multiple crumb rubber sources were evaluated in order to gain an understanding of the differences between the various crumb rubbers. This analysis permitted identification of the important …

Land Use And Development In The Mojave Desert Region Of San Bernardino County, California: The Impact Of Changing Demographic Trends, Pete Gomben

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This research contributes to the field of land use planning by examining the effects of demographic trends--also known as demographic futures--on growth and development projections for seven communities in the Mojave Desert region of San Bernardino County, California. Demographic trends based on California Department of Finance projections and land development data supplied by the Southern California Association of Governments were obtained for each of the communities for the period between 1990 and 2001. By using a spatially explicit urban growth model, these trends and data were then used to allocate community-specific future growth for Adelanto, Apple Valley, Barstow, Hesperia, Twentynine …

Development Of Direct Elemental Speciation In Solid State Materials Using Pulsed Glow Discharge Mass Spectrometry, Jennifer N. Robertson-Honecker

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Among the various elemental mass spectrometry techniques, glow discharge mass spectrometry is recognized for its ability to provide direct determination of trace elements present in solid state samples. In the present work, a pulsed glow discharge time of flight mass spectrometry method is developed for the direct speciation of chromium in solid state samples. In initial investigations, time-resolved power perturbation and Langmuir probe studies were undertaken to elucidate the excitation and ionization processes in a pulsed glow discharge plasma. The experimental data provides further insight into the energy transfer processes that occur at different spatial locations and in different temporal …

Career And Technical Education Curriculum: The Implementation Process In Southeast Georgia High Schools, Kenneth D. Boyd May 2008

Career And Technical Education Curriculum: The Implementation Process In Southeast Georgia High Schools, Kenneth D. Boyd

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs have been an element of the American high school experience and are still an integral part of an overall high school curriculum (Silverberg, 2004). An academic foundation, combined with work and life skills, is essential for preparing a student for the 21st Century workplace (Wonacott, 2003). Employers require well trained employees possessing the skills and capabilities taught in CTE programs. However, employers also report difficulty recruiting when attempting to hire well trained, qualified people. The purpose of this study was to better understand the implementation process of a high school CTE curriculum in Southeast …

A Content Analysis Of Acculturating Hispanics’ Artwork: Implications For Art Therapy, Sarah Bufogle May 2008

A Content Analysis Of Acculturating Hispanics’ Artwork: Implications For Art Therapy, Sarah Bufogle

EVMS School of Health Professions Theses & Dissertations

Research in art therapy and other mental health fields on Hispanics is limited. In an attempt to further understand Hispanics and the impact of the acculturation process, this study explores similarities and/or differences between the content of drawings of Hispanics who have lived in the United States for 7 years or less and non-Hispanics. Participants consisted of 9 Hispanics and 11 non-Hispanics. A content analysis of the Free Choice Drawing was utilized to determine graphic differences between drawings of both groups. It was hypothesized that there might be considerable visual differences between drawings by acculturating Hispanics and by non-Hispanics.

The New Social Movement: Environmental Justice In The Bronx, Kelsey Ripper Apr 2008

The New Social Movement: Environmental Justice In The Bronx, Kelsey Ripper

Student Theses 2001-2013

It can be argued that the birth of the Environmental Justice movement was 1982 in Warren County, North Carolina during a battle over the implementation of a PCB waste site. Unfortunately though, environmental injustices have been occurring throughout most of human history. The exploitation of minorities manifests itself in many ways, and one of those ways is through unhealthy and unsafe environmental conditions. These conditions are often the result of unfair policies which unjustly skew the burden of pollution and waste onto minority or low-income groups. These groups in particular often lack the financial resources or political power necessary to …
