Impact Of Geographical Proximity On Health Care Seeking Behaviour In Northern Oman, Ahmed Al-Mandhari, Samir Al-Adawi, Ibrahim Al-Shafaee, Mohammed, Liyam Eloul
Impact Of Geographical Proximity On Health Care Seeking Behaviour In Northern Oman, Ahmed Al-Mandhari, Samir Al-Adawi, Ibrahim Al-Shafaee, Mohammed, Liyam Eloul
Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal
Objectives: Despite its impact on health policy, the relationship between geographical proximity and health care seeking has received scant attention in the medical literature. This paper aims to evaluate the relationship between geographic proximity and health care usage behaviour among patients seeking medical consultation in the northern region of Oman. Methods: During 2006- 2007, data was collected via face-to-face interviews among 428 randomized patients seeking medical consultation in various primary health care centres in the northern region of Oman. The association between geographical proximity as a reason to seek health care and other predictors was also analysed using multivariable logistic …

Quality Of Relationship With Supervisor And Work Exhaustion Among Nurses, Unnikammu Moideenkutty, Gary Blau, Ahmed
Quality Of Relationship With Supervisor And Work Exhaustion Among Nurses, Unnikammu Moideenkutty, Gary Blau, Ahmed
Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal
Objectives: To study the impact of quality of relationships with supervisors, operationalised as leader-member exchange (LMX), on work exhaustion among nurses working for a hospital in Oman. Methods: Data were collected from 229 nurses using a questionnaire. Results: LMX was found to be a significant negative correlate of work exhaustion directly, as well as beyond the controlled- for correlates of gender, organisation experience, occupation experience, education level, job satisfaction, occupation satisfaction and work interfering with family. Conclusion: A perceived higher quality work relationship with one’s supervisor appears to have a significant impact on reducing perceived work exhaustion among nurses.

Genetic Counselling And Testing For Inherited Gene Mutations In Newly Diagnosed Patients With Breast Cancer: A Review Of The Existing Literature And A Proposed Research Agenda, Bettina Meiser, Kathy Tucker, Michael Friedlander, Kristine Barlow-Stewart, Elizabeth Lobb, Christobel Saunders, Gillian Mitchell
Research outputs pre 2011
Many women newly diagnosed with breast cancer and with a strong family history of breast cancer are referred to a family cancer service for genetic counselling and for consideration of genetic testing for germline mutations in cancer predisposition genes following completion of their cancer treatment. However, there is growing evidence that mutation status may influence treatment recommendations, and that there may be benefits in having 'treatment-focused genetic counselling and testing' available shortly after cancer diagnosis. This article reviews the literature that could inform the development of treatment-focused genetic counselling and testing, including: the rationale for genetic testing to aid with …

Acknowledging Morality In Methodology, Rachelle Erika Howard
Acknowledging Morality In Methodology, Rachelle Erika Howard
Theses and Dissertations
Marriage and family research has its foundation in the positivist tradition, which dismisses the relevance of morality to the scientific enterprise. Yet morality is inherent in marriage and family studies—both in the topics studied and in methodology. In this conceptual research, positivist assumptions are explicated to show that positivist methodology relies on a stance of moral neutrality that turns out to be a hidden morality. This hidden morality requires that people be studied as other objects. The need for a methodology that has an explicit moral philosophy and that acknowledges that humans are not “things” is discussed. Levinas' relational philosophy …

An Investigation Of The Technological, Pedagogical And Content Knowledge Framework In Successful Chinese Language Classrooms, Su-Ling Hsueh
An Investigation Of The Technological, Pedagogical And Content Knowledge Framework In Successful Chinese Language Classrooms, Su-Ling Hsueh
Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative case study investigates whether technological, pedagogical and content knowledge (TPCK) is balanced and integrated in Chinese language classrooms. Three expert Chinese teachers in technology-enhanced classrooms, as well as their students, were observed and studied. Four and a half months of data were collected in the form of classroom observations, interviews, reflective journals, and document analysis. Four basic findings were derived from the study. First, the TPCK framework reflected an observable instructional process for communication between teachers and students. However, teachers did not knowingly integrate technology, pedagogy and content in technology-enhanced classrooms. Second, content was the focal point during …

Hemispheric Differences In The Recognition Of Environmental Sounds, Julio Gonza´Lez, Conor T. Mclennan
Hemispheric Differences In The Recognition Of Environmental Sounds, Julio Gonza´Lez, Conor T. Mclennan
Psychology Faculty Publications
In the visual domain, Marsolek and colleagues have found support for two dissociable and parallel neural subsystems underlying object and shape recognition: an abstract category subsystem that operates more effectively in the left cerebral hemisphere (LH), and a specific-exemplar subsystem that operates more effectively in the right cerebral hemisphere (RH). Evidence of this asymmetry has been observed for linguistic (words, pseudo-word forms) and non-linguistic (objects) stimuli. In the auditory domain, the authors previously found hemispheric asymmetries in priming effects when linguistic stimuli (spoken words) were used. In the present study, hemispheric asymmetries were investigated for non-linguistic stimuli (environmental sounds) by …

The Promise Of Academic Learning Time In A Dose-Response Model Of Early Reading Achievement, Benjamin Heuston
The Promise Of Academic Learning Time In A Dose-Response Model Of Early Reading Achievement, Benjamin Heuston
Theses and Dissertations
Reading has long been acknowledged to be a critical skill that is best acquired early in life. According to the most recent National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) reports, American public school children continue to struggle to master the basics of reading. Although federal funding in real dollars has increased consistently over time, reading scores have not followed suit, suggesting that fiscal resources have not been applied successfully to the variables that are directly related to reading acquisition and achievement. The current state of affairs therefore suggests the need for identifying a fiscally-targetable, instructionally-relevant variable with a direct, causal relationship …
