Christian Narratives Of Forgiveness: An Examination Of Components Used By Christian Laypeople In The Process Of Forgiveness, Heath H. Fervida Sep 2008

Christian Narratives Of Forgiveness: An Examination Of Components Used By Christian Laypeople In The Process Of Forgiveness, Heath H. Fervida

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

There is rising interest in forgiveness within the social sciences; however, the religious roots of forgiveness are often overlooked. The primary aim of this research was to assess whether those of Christian faith have unique elements in their forgiveness process. Motives and mechanism of forgiveness were assessed in 100 Christian narratives of forgiveness and then considered in light of current process models. The results of this analysis show that Christians incorporate the main components of current process models; however, they also approach them with motives and mechanisms unique to the Christian faith. Their understanding of God and a relationship with …

Protecting Public Health And The Environment By The Stroke Of A Presidential Pen: Seven Executive Orders For The President's First 100 Days, Eileen Gauna

Faculty Scholarship

This white paper recommends a series of seven Executive Orders to the new Administration, all in the areas of health, safety, and the environment. Each of the suggested Executive Orders directs agencies of the government to take specific steps that would make a realworld difference and simultaneously send a signal to the public, Congress, the business community, and others that a new course has been charted and that change has arrived.

Forgiveness And Consideration Of Future Consequences In Aggressive Driving, Michael Moore, Eric R. Dahlen Sep 2008

Forgiveness And Consideration Of Future Consequences In Aggressive Driving, Michael Moore, Eric R. Dahlen

Faculty Publications

Most research on aggressive driving has focused on identifying aspects of driver personality which will exacerbate it (e.g., sensation seeking, impulsiveness, driving anger, etc.). The present study was designed to examine two theoretically relevant but previously unexplored personality factors predicted to reduce the risk of aggressive driving: trait forgiveness and consideration of future consequences. The utility of these variables in predicting aggressive driving and driving anger expression was evaluated among 316 college student volunteers. Hierarchical multiple regressions permitted an analysis of the incremental validity of these constructs beyond respondent gender, age, miles driven per week, and driving anger. Both forgiveness …

Economic Load Dispatch Using Bacterial Foraging Technique With Particle Swarm Optimization Biased Evolution, Ahmed Yousuf Saber, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy Sep 2008

Economic Load Dispatch Using Bacterial Foraging Technique With Particle Swarm Optimization Biased Evolution, Ahmed Yousuf Saber, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents a novel modified bacterial foraging technique (BFT) to solve economic load dispatch (ELD) problems. BFT is already used for optimization problems, and performance of basic BFT for small problems with moderate dimension and searching space is satisfactory. Search space and complexity grow exponentially in scalable ELD problems, and the basic BFT is not suitable to solve the high dimensional ELD problems, as cells move randomly in basic BFT, and swarming is not sufficiently achieved by cell-to-cell attraction and repelling effects for ELD. However, chemotaxis, swimming, reproduction and elimination-dispersal steps of BFT are very promising. On the other …

School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications

Aim: The aim of this report is to present the etiology, diagnosis, and treatment planning strategy in the presence of an open gingival embrasure between the maxillary central incisors.

Background: The open gingival embrasure or “black triangle” is a visible triangular space in the cervical region of the maxillary incisors. It appears when the gingival papilla does not completely fill in the interdental space. The space may occur due to: (1) disease or surgery with periodontal attachment loss resulting in gingival recession; (2) severely malaligned maxillary incisors; (3) divergent roots; or (4) triangular-shaped crowns associated with or without periodontal problems …

Objective—To evaluate the efficacy of an integrated multiple risk intervention delivered mainly during pregnancy, in reducing such risks (smoking, environmental tobacco smoke exposure, depression and intimate partner violence) postpartum.

Design—Data from this randomized controlled trial were collected prenatally and on average 10 weeks postpartum in six prenatal care sites in the District of Columbia. African Americans were screened, recruited and randomly assigned to the behavioral intervention or usual care. Clinic-based, individually tailored counseling was delivered to intervention women. The outcome measures were number of reisks reported postpartum and reduction of these risks between baseline and postpartum.

Results—The …

Designing Transparency: The 9/11 Commission And Institutional Form, Mark Fenster Sep 2008

Designing Transparency: The 9/11 Commission And Institutional Form, Mark Fenster

Washington and Lee Law Review

Surpassing the low expectations established by previous investigatory commissions and overcoming the political and legal obstacles created by the Bush administration's opposition to its creation, the 9/11 Commission accomplished what appeared to be the impossible: an authoritative investigation, a widely-read final report, and direct influence on significant legislation. This Article argues that the 9/11 Commission represents an important institutional model for encouraging orforcing the Executive Branch to disclose information about an especially significant and controversial past event or future decision. It suggests that Congress or the President consider establishing such commissions when information held by the Executive Branch can help …

Tax Fairness, Brian Galle Sep 2008

Tax Fairness, Brian Galle

Washington and Lee Law Review

This Article argues that, contrary to the consensus of economists and many legal scholars, the norm of "horizontal equity" in taxation has independent meaning as a default rule in favor of existing arrangements. Although it has long been said, and widely thought, that tax should be fair in its dealings with individuals who are situated similarly to one another, no one has been able to say convincingly just what that fairness comprises. As a result, the learned referees in the last major dispute over the significance of horizontal equity judged that fairness's critic had decidedly won the day. Since then, …

Job Stress, Self-Efficacy, Burnout And Intention To Leave Among Kindergarten Teachers In Taiwan, Mao-Nan Cheng Sep 2008

Job Stress, Self-Efficacy, Burnout And Intention To Leave Among Kindergarten Teachers In Taiwan, Mao-Nan Cheng

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

Teaching is far more stressful and challenging than ever before, and teacher burnout has an alarming effect on teaching quality, student achievement, school climate, and teacher's intention to leave. In Taiwan, the percentage of kindergarten teacher turnover is even higher, about 65% (National Policy Foundation, 2002). Battling teacher burnout and intention to leave are the most critical issues in a school system.

The general purpose of this quantitative, non-experimental comparative(exploratory) and correlation (explanatory) study is to examine the relationships between level of stress, burnout, self-efficacy and intention to leave among the kindergarten teachers in Taiwan. The sample consisted of the …

Irregular Warfare: New Challenges For Civil-Military Relations, Patrick M. Cronin

Strategic Forums

Success in the highly political and ambiguous conflicts likely to dominate the global security environment in the coming decades will require a framework that balances the relationships between civilian and military leaders and makes the most effective use of their different strengths. These challenges are expected to require better integrated, whole-of-government approaches, the cooperation of host governments and allies, and strategic patience.

Enacting Social Justice To Teach Social Justice: The Pedagogy Of Bridge Builders, Karen E. Eifler, Jeff Kerssen-Griep, Peter Thacker

Journal of Catholic Education

This article describes a particular endeavor, the Bridge Builders Academic Mentoring Program (BAMP), a partnership between a school of education in a Catholic university in the Northwest and a community-based rites of passage program for adolescent African American males. The partnership exemplifies tenets of Catholic social teaching, in that it is community-based, justice-oriented and in many ways countercultural. The pedagogy aligns with the goals of service learning; that is, the service extended by university students satisfies a genuine community need, and at the same time affords those engaged in service an opportunity to acquire crucial knowledge, skills, and dispositions to …

The Economic Aftermath Of The 1960s Riots: Evidence From Property Values: A Review., Magnus O. Abeng Sep 2008

The Economic Aftermath Of The 1960s Riots: Evidence From Property Values: A Review., Magnus O. Abeng

Economic and Financial Review

The paper focused on the impact of riots on the value of residential property with an emphasis on black owned property in the United States using census data. The focus was informed by the fact that property value is one of the indicators of neighbourhood quality and secondly the widening gap in housing values which may not be unconnected with the occurrence of riots.

The Economic Aftermath Of The 1960s Riots: Evidence From Property Values - A Review., M.O. Abeng Sep 2008

The Economic Aftermath Of The 1960s Riots: Evidence From Property Values - A Review., M.O. Abeng

Economic and Financial Review

In examining the causes of riots in the United States, the authors identified discriminatory norms and public policies, large capital gaps in income and wealth, relatively low demand for unskilled labour due largely to macroeconomic and technological developments, rural–urban migration, rising rates of crimes and unemployment as some of the predominant causative factors. Using city-level and household-level data, the paper found persistent negative and economically significant correlations between riots severity and black-owned property values. The paper attempted to capture the omitted variables that could misstate riots’ true impact on property values by controlling series of city characteristics such as pre-existing …

Predictive Measures Of Cognitive Outcome In Adults Sustaining Brain Injury, Herminia De La Rosa-Trujillo Sep 2008

Predictive Measures Of Cognitive Outcome In Adults Sustaining Brain Injury, Herminia De La Rosa-Trujillo

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

To date, there is no consistent and accurate outcome prediction method for patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI). Commonly used clinical measures such as the Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) and traditional radiological methods of x-rays and computed tomography (CT) scans do not always accurately predict patient functional outcome. These radiological methods are adequate in determining gross structural anatomical disturbances, however, they are unable to detect more diffuse cellular damage believed to be responsible for the functional impairments evidenced in patients sustaining TBI. Magnetic resonance imaging allows for various non-invasive sequencing techniques that have demonstrated to be a potentially valuable method …

A Theory Of Positive Mental Health, Jason D. Rowden Sep 2008

A Theory Of Positive Mental Health, Jason D. Rowden

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

For many decades psychological research has erred on the side of looking toward pathology and has neglected to define what positive mental health functioning is on an individual level (Dahlsgaard, Peterson, & Seligman, 2005, p. 203). Without a sound theory of positive mental health, the field of psychology is left guessing as to its meaning. The importance of having a clear definition of mental health cannot be underscored enough. Without a clear understanding of mental health, the field of psychology is forced to function with varying opinions, defined by each clinician. The goal of the current thesis is to contribute …

Psychosocial Predictors Of Adolescent Sexual Initiation In The Caribbean, Tenesha Samantha Berry Sep 2008

Psychosocial Predictors Of Adolescent Sexual Initiation In The Caribbean, Tenesha Samantha Berry

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Literature supports that adolescent early sexual initiation is more likely to result in multiple sex partners and less protection, making early sexual activity an HIV/ AIDS risk. Delaying sexual initiation may thus be an important combatant to the spread of HIV/ AIDS. This study's objective was to examine sexual initiation in 234 Jamaican youth ages 13-19. Perception of peers' and parents' pro-risk attitudes, parental monitoring, parental discussions about sex; religious importance and HIV/AIDS knowledge were investigated via a survey including items from the Center for Disease Control's Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS).

This study utilized archival data as part of …
