Illusory Vowels Resulting From Perceptual Continuity: A Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Study, Antje Heinrich, Robert P Carlyon, Matthew H Davis, Ingrid Johnsrude Oct 2008

Illusory Vowels Resulting From Perceptual Continuity: A Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Study, Antje Heinrich, Robert P Carlyon, Matthew H Davis, Ingrid Johnsrude

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications

We used functional magnetic resonance imaging to study the neural processing of vowels whose perception depends on the continuity illusion. Participants heard sequences of two-formant vowels under a number of listening conditions. In the "vowel conditions," both formants were always present simultaneously and the stimuli were perceived as speech-like. Contrasted with a range of nonspeech sounds, these vowels elicited activity in the posterior middle temporal gyrus (MTG) and superior temporal sulcus (STS). When the two formants alternated in time, the "speech-likeness" of the sounds was reduced. It could be partially restored by filling the silent gaps in each formant with …

High School To College Transition: A Profile Of The Stressors, Physical And Psychological Health Issues That Affect The First-Year On-Campus College Student, Terence Hicks, Samuel Heastie Oct 2008

High School To College Transition: A Profile Of The Stressors, Physical And Psychological Health Issues That Affect The First-Year On-Campus College Student, Terence Hicks, Samuel Heastie

Faculty Working Papers from the School of Education

The purpose of this article is to provide identified stressors, physical and psychological health issues that affect first year campus college students as they transition from high school to college. The Health Behaviors, Self-Rated Health and Quality of Life (QOL) questionnaire was administered to 514 university college students. Results from this study determined that there were significant differences among student life stressors and physical and psychological health status between first-year on-campus and first-year off-campus college students. Most importantly this study documented compelling information regarding selection of roommate, poor housing, chronic and temporary diseases, injury and prescription medicine among college students …

On Representations Of Quantum Groups Uq(Fm(K,H)), Xin Tang, Yunge Xu Oct 2008

On Representations Of Quantum Groups Uq(Fm(K,H)), Xin Tang, Yunge Xu

College of Health, Science, and Technology

We construct families of irreducible representations for a class of quantum groups Uq(fm(K,H). First, we realize these quantum groups as hyperbolic algebras. Such a realization yields natural families of irreducible weight representations for Uq(fm(K,H)). Second, we study the relationship between Uq(fm(K,H)) and Uq(fm(K)). As a result, any finite-dimensional weight representation of Uq(fm(K,H)) is proved to be completely reducible. Finally, we study the Whittaker model for the center of U q(fm(K,H)), and a classification of all irreducible Whittaker representations of Uq(fm(K,H)) is obtained. © 2008 Australian Mathematical Society.

An Exploration Of University Students’ Spelling Abilities, Mary Jo Fresch Oct 2008

An Exploration Of University Students’ Spelling Abilities, Mary Jo Fresch

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

This study includes a spelling inventory and attitude survey that were administered to pre-service education undergraduates. Analyzed using traditional performance levels as guidelines, no students scored at an independent level, 71% scored within an instructional level, and 29% scored at a frustration level. Inventory results and survey comments demonstrated the students’ heavy reliance on letter/ sound correspondences to guide their attempts at spelling. The majority commented that, as a teacher, they would help struggling spellers by telling them to “sound out the word.” Results suggest that, as future teachers, pre-service students must be instructed beyond the alphabetic stage and shown …

Untapped Cultural Support: The Influence Of Culturally Bound Prior Knowledge On Comprehension Performance, Ruanda Garth-Mccullough Oct 2008

Untapped Cultural Support: The Influence Of Culturally Bound Prior Knowledge On Comprehension Performance, Ruanda Garth-Mccullough

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

By analyzing the prior knowledge of African American students, this study explored the relationship between cultural orientation of literature and reading comprehension to determine its’ effect on low, mid, and high level readers. Over one hundred 8th grade students from four different public schools read short stories from three different cultural orientations. Their reading comprehension performance was analyzed to determine the role that culturally bound prior knowledge plays in the comprehension process for low, medium, and high performing students. To measure the effects of cultural orientation of texts, prior achievement, and prior knowledge on the students’ reading comprehension performance, the …

Nature And Application Of Knowledge And Its Significance To Organizational Management Leaders, Heidi Gregory-Mina Oct 2008

Nature And Application Of Knowledge And Its Significance To Organizational Management Leaders, Heidi Gregory-Mina

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Epistemology is a branch of philosophy, which provides an individual with tools for understanding what he or she knows, but epistemology cannot be separated from an individual’s metaphysics. It is almost impossible to separate a thinker’s epistemology from his or her metaphysics, because epistemology connects with specific ethics and politics and metaphysics connects all of that, in a coherent philosophical system. Metaphysics connects the philosophical system because epistemology does not fit well with randomness but does connect with specific ethics and politics. In 1854, the term epistemology appears to have been used for the first time, correlating with an intense …

The Symbiotic Nature Of The Leader-Follower Relationship And Its Impact On Organizational Effectiveness, Jillian Gilbert, Sergio Matviuk Oct 2008

The Symbiotic Nature Of The Leader-Follower Relationship And Its Impact On Organizational Effectiveness, Jillian Gilbert, Sergio Matviuk

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

The field of leadership studies is overflowing with discussions and explorations of leadership contribution and influence (Winston & Patterson, 2005; Miller, 2007). Unfortunately, as some researchers such as Frye, Kisselburgh & Butts (2007) point out, discussions and research on the full capacity and capabilities of followership are scarce. This lack of research limits our understanding about the impact of followership in organizations. The lack of research derives from a leader-centered approach that has traditionally dominated the field of leadership studies (Lord and Brown, 2003). Also, out of the academic circles society still tends to focus on leadership as positions contained …

How To Build A Better Vision Statement, Shelley Kirkpatrick Oct 2008

How To Build A Better Vision Statement, Shelley Kirkpatrick

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

It is a fact-of-life that an organization must have a formal vision statement. Like any leadership tool, it is only effective if it is done right. Research has demonstrated time and again that a vision statement can improve organizational performance as well as individual follower performance, but only if the vision contains certain characteristics (Baum, Locke, & Kirkpatrick, 1998; Kirkpatrick, 2004; Kirkpatrick & Locke, 1996; Kirkpatrick, Wofford, & Baum, 2002).

Importance Of Eq Skills For On-Line Professors, Joseph Neptune

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Distance learning has become widely used around the world and is available in a number of forms that greatly reduce the restrictions imposed on by the traditional class room environment. Various platforms allow the professors to hold live lectures, utilize PowerPoint presentations, and provide a learning environment that is as close to the campus lecture experience. Distance learning has grown and is continuing to grow in popularity as more and more colleges and universities are offering distance and hybrid programs.

A Systematic Approach For Training Candidates To Use The Teacher Work Sample, Beth Walizer, Taggart Germaine, Keith Dreiling Oct 2008

A Systematic Approach For Training Candidates To Use The Teacher Work Sample, Beth Walizer, Taggart Germaine, Keith Dreiling

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

The purpose of this paper is to describe the benefits of scaffolding the work sample criteria through a teacher preparation program for elementary education candidates. This article illustrates the way that Fort Hays State University’s teacher education program has successfully implemented a work sample process. A process of scaffolding the criteria was woven throughout the elementary teacher education program to instruct candidates on how to develop, implement, and assess instructional units of study. As a way to describe the teacher work sample process, the authors have contextualized the model, provided components of a teacher work sample, and presented a program …
