Reading masochism as a literary phenomenon means exploring several layers of relationships—of literature and performance, of textuality and subjectivity—and the relationships among various practices of reading. I start with Krafft-Ebing and his practices of reading, examine the relationship between literature and practice, and end with an exploration of diagnosis and writing. Rousseau's Confessions exemplifies these rich layers, as a text with a life and readership of its own and as writing exercise, and exemplifies what Michel Foucault termed a "technology of the self." The link I am forging between Krafft-Ebing and Foucault's technologies of the self offers a reevaluation of …
Illness And Inability To Repay: The Role Of Debtor Health In The Discharge Of Educational Debt, Rafael I. Pardo
Illness And Inability To Repay: The Role Of Debtor Health In The Discharge Of Educational Debt, Rafael I. Pardo
Scholarship@WashULaw
For a debtor to obtain a discharge of student loans in bankruptcy, the debtor must establish that their repayment would impose an undue hardship. This Article presents the results of an empirical study of bankruptcy court doctrine over a ten-year period that involved undue hardship discharge proceedings where the court reported information on the debtor's health status, monthly household income, and monthly household expenses. The data show that a medical condition increased a debtor's odds of being granted a discharge by 140% but that household income and expense levels did not have a statistically significant association with legal outcome. These …
Alcohol Use Among Adolescents, Malynda R. Zuck
Alcohol Use Among Adolescents, Malynda R. Zuck
Graduate Research Papers
Alcohol is the most frequently used drug among adolescents today. Alcohol use among adolescents has been linked to many probable consequences and risks including: motor vehicle crashes, risky sexual behavior and an increased risk for sexually transmitted diseases, suicide, poor physical and mental health, lower social competence, and decreases in school achievement (Brown et al., 2007; Diego, Field, & Sanders, 2003; Wallace & Fisher, 2006). Research has shown that the earlier an adolescent initiates with the use of alcohol, the more likely that person will experience alcohol dependence in his or her life, with the onset of dependence occurring quickly …
Motivational Factors Of Seasonal Volunteers: A Study Of The Student Conservation Association, Cory J. Roegner
Motivational Factors Of Seasonal Volunteers: A Study Of The Student Conservation Association, Cory J. Roegner
Graduate Research Papers
The use and efficacy of motivational factors in attracting and retaining employees has become an increasingly important concern within the realm of leisure-service management. Authors of leading text on managing leisure-service organizations have affirmed this dilemma, stating that more research is needed on how to attract, retain, supervise, and motivate employees (Henderson & Bialeschki, 1993; Hoff, Ellis & Crossley, 1988). In recent decades, this need has become particularly true with respect to the motives of seasonal and part-time volunteers (DeGraaf & Edginton, 1992). The field of outdoor recreation/resource management is of no exception. Thus, the purpose of this study was …

The development, implementation, review, and subsequent revision of a capstone assignment during teacher education candidates’ field experience and the assignments-related rubric was based on research that points teacher education programs to give candidates experiences in rethinking their views of pedagogy as they integrate technology into the curriculum. The initial development of the rubric came as a result of requirements of national accrediting organizations for licensure programs to have performance assessments of their candidates. The review of the assignment by technology experts as well as education faculty showed a disconnect between the goals of the technology faculty and the mentors helping …

The interpersonal–psychological theory of suicidal behavior (Joiner, 2005)proposes that the need to belong is fundamental; when met it can prevent suicide and when thwarted it can substantially increase the risk for suicide. We investigate one source of group-wide variation in belongingness among college students—changes in the social composition of college campuses across academic semesters—as an explanation for variation in suicidal ideation across the academic year. Our results indicate that in a sample of college students at a large southern state university (n=309), suicidal ideation varied across academic semesters, with high-est levels in summer compared to both spring and fall. Differences in …

Objective: The clinical global impression-improvement scale (CGI-I) is used to monitor treatment outcome in mental disorders. To better understand the properties of the CGI-I scale in social anxiety disorder, effects sizes from the CGI-I scale were compared to comparably calculated effect sizes from other rating scales obtained from double-blind, placebo-controlled trials of selective-serotonin reuptake inhibitors in social anxiety disorder. From peer-reviewed, double-blind, placebo-controlled studies evaluating selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors in social anxiety disorder, we extracted CGI-I data and scores from other assessment scales of severity and function. Using calculations that enabled direct comparisons, effect sizes for the binarily reported CGI-I …

The purpose of this research is to describe how a university doctoral researchteam entered into a collaborative research partnership with a Midwestern rural schooldistrict to work with an eighth-grade team of teachers (teacher team) to think differently about their pedagogical practices in their non-AYP, low socioeconomic status middleschool. A qualitative case study using an appreciate inquiry (AI) methodology was used with aneighth-grade team of teachers—four women and two men. Data were collected throughsemi-structured paired interviews, whole-group discussions, shared written activities, narrative group story, extensive researcher field notes, and activities related to enhanceteam members’ dialogue over an eight-month period. The findings indicate …

Dominance Of The Proximal Coordinate Frame In Determining The Locations Of Hippocampal Place Cell Activity During Navigation, Jennifer J Siegel, Joshua P Neunuebel, James J Knierim
Dominance Of The Proximal Coordinate Frame In Determining The Locations Of Hippocampal Place Cell Activity During Navigation, Jennifer J Siegel, Joshua P Neunuebel, James J Knierim
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
The place-specific activity of hippocampal cells provides downstream structures with information regarding an animal's position within an environment and, perhaps, the location of goals within that environment. In rodents, recent research has suggested that distal cues primarily set the orientation of the spatial representation, whereas the boundaries of the behavioral apparatus determine the locations of place activity. The current study was designed to address possible biases in some previous research that may have minimized the likelihood of observing place activity bound to distal cues. Hippocampal single-unit activity was recorded from six freely moving rats as they were trained to perform …

In this study, we describe an fMRI version of the verbal fluency test. This is the second in a series of fMRI adaptations of classical neuropsychological tests, for which normative samples of functional activation have been collected from unimpaired control subjects and structured in a manner that makes individual patient evaluation possible in terms of familiar z-score distributions. This fMRI protocol is shown to have strong convergent validity with the FAS phonemic fluency test and to elicit activation patterns highly consistent with a large body of previous neuroimaging studies of verbal fluency. We also present a case study, in which …

Recent commentary has rightly lamented the uncertain state of the multifactor test for trademark infringement. “This heuristic device is the fulcrum of American trademark law,” yet the courts are in substantial disagreement as to which factors are relevant to an evaluation of the likelihood of confusion. The doctrinal divide is substantial: “Some circuits claim to weigh heavily under certain factors what other circuits claim to ignore, and nearly every factor or combination of factors has been called the ‘most important’ by one court or another.”
Persistence Of Gender Occupational Segregation And The Gender Income Gap In Early 21st Century Usa, Alex Goga
Persistence Of Gender Occupational Segregation And The Gender Income Gap In Early 21st Century Usa, Alex Goga
Undergraduate Economic Review
This study has found evidence that occupational segregation is still present, as some traditionally feminine occupations (primary school teaching and nursing) comprise significantly more women than men. Furthermore, this study has found evidence that the earnings gender gap persists even in these occupations that continue to be dominated by women.
The Role Of Identity In Intra- And Inter-Group Bargaining In The Ultimatum Game, John H. Kim
The Role Of Identity In Intra- And Inter-Group Bargaining In The Ultimatum Game, John H. Kim
Undergraduate Economic Review
This paper investigates the role of intra- and inter-group effects on the ultimatum game. The paper presents the identity theory as a framework for analyzing intra- and intergroup bargaining behavior on the ultimatum game. An experimental ultimatum game was conducted between participants from Washington and Lee University and Virginia Military Institute. The results presented shows evidence of ultimatum bargaining behavior being influenced by in-group favoritism, along with some evidence of out-group hostility. The results also provide possible implications of the effect of testosterone levels.

If legal institutions endorse LSAT scores and UGPAs as accurate assessments of ability, to what extent does “ability” influence wages in the legal job market? Do average salaries of graduates of top schools justify these schools’ lofty admittance standards? Earning a law degree does not automatically grant its holder the right to practice law; in fact, it is essentially a prerequisite for consideration by the professional organization that regulates the law profession in any given jurisdiction. Upon earning a law degree, aspirants must slay yet another mighty dragon, the bar exam. Given that certain law schools require excellent LSAT scores …

Infosys: An Analysis Of The Degree Of Covariance Between The Firm’S Nationally Traded Stock And Its American Depository (Ads), Rohan Poojara
Undergraduate Economic Review
Researchers have proved the influence of the American stock markets on their Indian counterparts during the IT boom. This paper tests these market-wide results on a stockspecific basis by analyzing the degree of covariance between the equity issued by the Indian firm Infosys on the Bombay Stock Exchange (Stock) and its American Depositary Shares (ADS) on the NASDAQ. The study finds that unlike the influence of the American bourses on the Indian markets, the Infosys ADS does not have an economically significant influence on the Stock. This supports the efficient market hypothesis. However, unlike current research which finds an absence …
Linking Depressed Earnings To Adolescent Depression, Emily Sands
Linking Depressed Earnings To Adolescent Depression, Emily Sands
Undergraduate Economic Review
In this study, I analyze empirically the ways in which adolescent depression depresses earnings in young adulthood. I test the prominent assertions that adolescent depression is predictive of young adult depression and of lower educational attainment, both of which are, in turn, predictive of lower earnings. I then expand upon the current literature by testing the assumption that those depressed in adolescence would benefit from staying in school. To that end, I first estimate the relationship between adolescent depression and returns to education. Since one relevant alternative to educational attainment is work experience, I then estimate the relationship between adolescent …

Poverty, Diet And Health Behaviours: A Quantitative And Qualitative Study Among Young Urbanised Women., Daniel Mccartney
Doctoral
Demographic, socio-economic, attitudinal, dietary, health behavioural and anthropometric data were collected from 221 “disadvantaged” and 74 “advantaged” women aged 18-35 years across Dublin, according to the provisions of a novel socio-economic sampling frame. Internal and external validation techniques established the dietary assessment method of choice and identified “valid” dietary reporters (n=216, 153 disadvantaged, 63 advantaged) among this sample. Five qualitative focus groups (n=5-8 per group) were also conducted among disadvantaged women to examine their diet and health behaviour choices. Lower intakes of fruit and vegetables (172g/d vs. 405g/d, p

This article presents two experiments that used insight and mathematical problems to investigate whether different factors would affect hindsight bias on metacognitive and situational judgments. In both studies, participants initially rated their likelihood of solving each problem within a certain amount of time (metacognitive judgments) and rated the importance of each component of the problem for finding the solution (situational judgments). Next, participants attempted to solve each problem. In Experiment 1, all participants were given solution feedback information, but in Experiment 2, participants were not given any solution feedback. After 1 week, participants were asked to recall their original judgments. …

A Review Of Assistive Technology And Writing Skills For Students With Physical And Educational Disabilities, Howard P. Parette, Jack J. Hourcade, George R. Peterson-Karlan
Faculty Publications - College of Education
In recent years effective instruction in reading for learners with physical
and educational disabilities has received great attention in the schools.
However, instruction in the corollary skill of writing has received considerably less emphasis. This review paper notes that through the use of assistive technology, students with a variety of physical and educational
disabilities can learn to effectively (a) plan and organize their writing,
(b) draft and transcribe their work, and (c) edit and revise their narrative
and expository writing.
With teachers increasingly being held accountable for the development of
literacy skills in all students, including those students with physical …

Attitudes Towards One’S Aging Among Single, Professional, Highly Educated, Baby Boom Women: “I Don’T Know Who I Am, But I Am Not A Crazy Old Maid!”, Tatyana Shepel
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
Age is a value-laden cultural construct as it conveys social attitudes toward aging. This qualitative research, using a grounded theory approach and critical feminist gerontology as a theoretical framework, makes visible the experience of growing older and the renegotiation of self-identity among the ten single, professional, highly educated women ages 47-59 who resided in the Pacific Northwest and lets their voices be heard. In this study ten in-depth interviews and one focus group provided narrative data that captured women’s experiences of aging and uncovered common themes. The explored phenomenon of aging is experienced in the various socio-cultural contexts and conditions …
