Women’S Health Challenges In A Low-Income Philippine Urban Neighborhood, Fiscalina Amadora-Nolasco

Journal of International Women's Studies

This study privileges women’s views of health to determine the categories and beliefs through which they create meanings in their lives, particularly in assessing the influence of health problems on their well-being, and whether they have implicit ideas of how it might be possible for them to live a healthy life. To determine what constitutes the domain of women’s health problems and how they view these given the limitations of socioeconomic, political and environmental conditions of the community in which they live, interviews were conducted with 40 mothers in Paradise Island, Barangay Looc, Mandaue City, Philippines, between 2002-2004 as part …

Elaborating The Ideological And Structural Content Of Women’S Work In A Globalized Economy, Jinky Leilanie Lu

Journal of International Women's Studies

Women’s employment in the global market now has been increasing as a result of globalization and internationalization of labour. This study has two main objectives in its attempt to analyze the relations of gender, the global market, and health in the workplace. First, the article tries to elucidate the structural content of work as seen in the work organization; and second, to elaborate the ideological content of work as defined by ideologies of the organization, of the state and of the market production system. The study used quantitative methodology through surveys of 630 women workers in 23 establishments, as well …

William Faulkner And The Mithraic Midwife, Owen Elmore Nov 2008

William Faulkner And The Mithraic Midwife, Owen Elmore

Journal of International Women's Studies

The two parts of William Faulkner’s If I Forget Thee, Jerusalem—“The Wild Palms” and “Old Man”—mirror one another; the second story reflects a more familiar way of illustrating the same theme as the first. Each story emphasizes the other, building the shared theme subversive of traditional gender roles. It is also my feeling that Faulkner inverts Arthurian motifs to tell both stories (especially “The Wild Palms,” though most assume “Old Man” to be the more romantically accessible tale) exactly as Nathaniel Hawthorne did to tell The Scarlet Letter. Hawthorne’s bifurcating of the Grail legend in order to reclaim …

A Study Of The Relationship Between The Elements In Assessment Systems And Improvements In Candidate, Program, And Unit Performance At Ncate Accredited Higher Education Institutions In New York State, Anne Wahl

Education Doctoral

The problem that this study examined is whether assessment system elements required for National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCA TE) accreditation impact candidate, program, and unit performance in New York State higher education institutions. To receive NCA TE accreditation, institutions are required to develop and implement an assessment system that collects and uses data to measure and improve candidate, program, and unit performance. The purpose of this study was to determine if there is a relationship between the perceived importance of these assessment system elements and actual improvements in performance. A self-developed, quantitative survey instrument was used to …

Coteaching By Example: An Investigation Of College Faculty Leading A Course On Collaboration For Inclusion, Wendy Gladstone-Brown Nov 2008

Coteaching By Example: An Investigation Of College Faculty Leading A Course On Collaboration For Inclusion, Wendy Gladstone-Brown

Education Doctoral

The following qualitative autoethnographic methods stud y examined the experience of two co-teaching faculty: one in childhood education and one in special education, as they planned and implemented a co-teaching model to prepare teacher candidate's for inclusion. As a result of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (1990), schools have implemented a greater number of inclusion settings and co-teaching models. This rise has increased the probability of new teacher candidates being placed in collaborative settings for their fieldwork experiences, student teaching placements, and eventually paid teaching positions. Research describes some of the struggles that teachers face when working with other …

Do Current Teaching Practices On Multicultural Students With Autism Demonstrate Culturally Responsive Teaching?, Keith Mcgriff Nov 2008

Do Current Teaching Practices On Multicultural Students With Autism Demonstrate Culturally Responsive Teaching?, Keith Mcgriff

Education Doctoral

Autism is a disorder present from birth or very early in childhood that affects social interaction, communication of ideas and feelings, imagination, and relationships with others (National Research Council, 2001 ). Most of the research has categorized students with autism according to disability and failed to look at the importance of culture. Such limitations may reflect a lack of awareness of cultural issues and the ways that these issues affect students with autism and their families. Also, such missing information may compromise the quality of the fields of professionals who work with multicultural students (Obiakor, Wilder, and Dyches, 2004). Professionals …

A Study Of Relationships Between Levels Of Cultural Competence Among School Principals And Levels Of Organizational Cultural Competence Of Their Schools, Diantha Beth Joiner Watts Nov 2008

A Study Of Relationships Between Levels Of Cultural Competence Among School Principals And Levels Of Organizational Cultural Competence Of Their Schools, Diantha Beth Joiner Watts

Education Doctoral

Changing demographics of urban school districts toward student populations that are more culturally and ethnically diverse raises the issue of whether educators are able to effectively interact with students and families from diverse cultural backgrounds. Additionally, school leaders are expected to support teachers and provide a school environment that promotes acceptance of cultural differences and meets the needs of students from various cultural backgrounds. This study examines the relationship between levels of self-reported cultural competence among 39 RCSD principals as measured by Hammer's Intercultural Developmental Inventory (IDI) (Hammer, 1998) and their respective school's levels of organizational cultural competence as determined …

Can You Hear Me Now? An Exploration Of Targeted Professional Development Delivered To School Counselors, Lesli Clara Myers

Education Doctoral

While many scholars have spent time examining trends and changes within the field of school counseling, little or no attention has been given to the types of professional development that may assist school counselors in making the corresponding adjustments to these trends and changes (Akos & Galassi, 2004). The purpose of this mixed methods study was to examine the impact of targeted professional development upon school counselor practice. The question guiding this study was, "How does targeted professional development impact the practice of school counselors?" Three professional development sessions (based on the Transforming School Counseling initiative and American School Counselor …

Can School-Wide Positive Behavior Support Be An Evidence-Based Practice?, K. Richard Young, Paul Caldarella, Lynnette Christensen, Tyler Renshaw

Faculty Publications

Our Conclusions: School-Wide Positive Behavior Support is not yet an Evidence-Based Practice; School-Wide Positive Behavior Support can be reconceptualized (outside of the Evidence-Based Practice paradigm) as a “student-support framework”; As a framework, it can employ the Evidence-Based Practice paradigm; This reconceptualization may have real-life implications: setbacks and benefits.

Prison’S Spoilt Identities: Racially Structured Realities Within And Beyond, Nafis Hanif Nov 2008

Prison’S Spoilt Identities: Racially Structured Realities Within And Beyond, Nafis Hanif

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This article begins by seeking an explanation for the solidarity between Malay inmates and guards in perpetrating abusive and discriminatory treatment towards Malay transvestites. In the course of explaining an empirical phenomenon in the Singapore prison, this article has examined Singapore's history and ethnic demography, the ethnic Malay minority's lack of socio-economic development and modernisation vis-a-vis the ethnic Chinese majority, geo-politics, the ideology and strategic choices of the state's political elite and their implications for inter-ethnic interactions between Malays and Chinese. As this article will argue, prison culture, rather than being divorced from larger society, is in effect able to …

Interactive Effects Of Multicultural Experiences And Openness To Experience On Creativity, Angela K.-Y. Leung, Chi-Yue Chiu Nov 2008

Interactive Effects Of Multicultural Experiences And Openness To Experience On Creativity, Angela K.-Y. Leung, Chi-Yue Chiu

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Extensiveness of multicultural experiences and Openness to Experience were used to predict European American undergraduates' performance on two measures of creative potential: (a) generation of unusual uses of garbage bags and (b) retrieval of nonprototypical or normatively inaccessible exemplars in the conceptual domain of occupation. The results showed that having extensive multicultural experiences predicted better performance on both measures of creative potential only among participants who were open to experience. Among those who were not open, having more extensive multicultural experiences was associated with a lower level of creative potential. Implications of these findings for promoting creativity in schools are …

Critical Junctures? Privatization Policy In Brazil And Argentina At The Start Of The Century, John Hogan Nov 2008

Critical Junctures? Privatization Policy In Brazil And Argentina At The Start Of The Century, John Hogan

Articles

This paper uses the critical junctures framework developed by Hogan and Doyle (2007) to determine if there were critical junctures in privatization policy in Brazil and Argentina at the start of the 21st century. The framework constitutes a rigorous approach to the identification of crisis, ideational change, and policy change. It is used to examine the economic disasters in Brazil in 1999 and Argentina in 2001. Previously, we would have had to wait decades before making such an assessment, as there were few tools with which to identify critical junctures, and these were usually only effective long after the event.

A two-tailed t-test was used to determine that the means of the two posttests were not significantly different at a probability level of .05. Therefore, the results of this research study indicated that high …

Directed Altruism And Enforced Reciprocity In Social Networks, Stephen Leider, Markus M. Mobius, Tanya S. Rosenblat, Quoc-Anh Do Nov 2008

Directed Altruism And Enforced Reciprocity In Social Networks, Stephen Leider, Markus M. Mobius, Tanya S. Rosenblat, Quoc-Anh Do

Research Collection School Of Economics

We conducted online field experiments in large real-world social networks in order to decompose prosocial giving into three components: (1) baseline altruism toward randomly selected strangers, (2) directed altruism that favors friends over random strangers, and (3) giving motivated by the prospect of future interaction. Directed altruism increases giving to friends by 52% relative to random strangers, whereas future interaction effects increase giving by an additional 24% when giving is socially efficient. This finding suggests that future interaction affects giving through a repeated game mechanism where agents can be rewarded for granting efficiency-enhancing favors. We also find that subjects with …

Virtual World Affordances: Enhancing Brand Value, S. Park, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah, D. Dewester, B. Eschenbrenner, S. Jeon

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Virtual worlds are three-dimensional, computer-generated worlds that are a natural extension of the existing Internet. Although many businesses are jumping on the bandwagon to maintain a presence in virtual worlds, there is no well-established knowledge or theory to guide businesses in their involvement in these environments. In this paper, we identify affordances in the virtual worlds that can be used to increase the state of flow experienced in a business virtual site, which in turn may enhance brand equity, or the perceived added value of a brand to customers. We present a conceptual model that can be used to guide …

Coping Difficulties After Hospitalization, Judith Fitzgerald Miller, Linda Piacentine, Marianne E. Weiss Nov 2008

Coping Difficulties After Hospitalization, Judith Fitzgerald Miller, Linda Piacentine, Marianne E. Weiss

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

Coping difficulties of 113 adults 3 weeks after hospital discharge were identified using the Post-Discharge Coping Difficulty Scale and a brief focused telephone interview (11-item guide). Overall, low difficulty scores were reported (M = 23.9, SD = 18.2, range = 0 to 100). Qualitative data reveal specific coping difficulties in the categories of stressors, specific difficulties, caring for self, managing the condition, family, advice needed, contact with the health care system, and what they wished they knew before discharge. A core theme of biographical reconstruction emerged.
