Exercise may assist in the rehabilitation process by providing a way for the dependent individual to achieve a mild, pleasurable state that does not require the use of substances; Women between 18 and 43 years of age who were under supervision in a rehabilitation facility for substance abuse were randomly selected to be part of an exercise or a control group. They exercised three times a week for a total of two months. Subjects completed pre and post assessments of anxiety, depression, and readiness to change. Bouncing Back After Bullying: The Resiliency Of Female Victims Of Relational Aggression, Laura R. Hammel Jan 2008

Bouncing Back After Bullying: The Resiliency Of Female Victims Of Relational Aggression, Laura R. Hammel

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

Although strides recently have been made to facilitate the understanding of relational aggression and its consequences, one significant limitation has been the lack of research on long-term impact. Through a grounded theory approach, this study examines how resiliency behaviors exhibited by victims of relational aggression during their adolescent years aid in the development of trusting adult friendships.

Teacher Efficacy And Career Indecision Among Pre-Service Teachers: A Model Of Direct And Indirect Effects, Mary Beth Sloane, Mary D. Hancock

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

The present study investigates, through path analytic techniques, the influence of teacher efficacy on the career indecision of pre-service teachers. The sample consists of 305 students enrolled in Teacher Education programs at two southeastern universities. Results indicate that general teacher efficacy and career self-efficacy have significant direct effects on career indecision. Career self-efficacy mediates significant indirect effects for both general and personal teacher efficacy.

Understanding School Board Members' Perceptions Of Superintendents' Leader Behaviors, John V. Richard, Sharon D. Kruse Jan 2008

Understanding School Board Members' Perceptions Of Superintendents' Leader Behaviors, John V. Richard, Sharon D. Kruse

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

The study of school leadership has been a topic of considerable investigation. Primarily, this literature has focused on the leadership of principals and superintendents. Although school boards work hand in hand with school leaders concerning the decision making functions of district business, a literature base specifically focused on school board members and their perceptions of school superintendents' leadership behavior is lacking. This paper provides a framework for understanding school board members’ perceptions and suggests that school board members’ views of superintendents' leadership behaviors may be influenced by demographic factors including years of experience and gender of board members.

Denying Genocide: Law, Identity And Historical Memory In The Face Of Mass Atrocity Conference, Belinda Cooper Jan 2008

Denying Genocide: Law, Identity And Historical Memory In The Face Of Mass Atrocity Conference, Belinda Cooper

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

In 2006, France's lower house of parliament, the National Assembly, adopted a bill that would have made it a crime to deny that the Turks committed genocide against the Armenians during and after World War I. Almost simultaneously, Turkish writers and scholars, including Nobel Prize winner Orhan Pamuk, were being charged by Turkish authorities for precisely the opposite "crime": calling the killing of Armenians by Turks a genocide and, in the process, "denigrating Turkishness.'' These two diametrically opposed events provided an illustrative backdrop to the Denying Genocide: Law, Identity and Historical Memory in the Face of Mass Atrocity conference at …

Taking Denial Seriously: Genocide Denial And Freedom Of Speech In French Law, Sévane Garibian Jan 2008

Taking Denial Seriously: Genocide Denial And Freedom Of Speech In French Law, Sévane Garibian

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

The French National Assembly's adoption of a bill penalizing the denial of the Armenian genocide (October 12, 2006), later followed by the German plan to outlaw genocide denial throughout European Union, stoked the vigorous French debate on the connection between genocide denial and law and, more generally, between history and law. The main criticism expressed by the detractors of laws against negationism - in particular historians - is the following: penalization of denial constitutes a violation of freedom of expression and, as such, represents a threat to democracy.

Adr And Collective Trauma: Constructing The Forum For The Traumatic Fuss, Michal Alberstein Jan 2008

Adr And Collective Trauma: Constructing The Forum For The Traumatic Fuss, Michal Alberstein

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

This paper explores the notion of collective trauma and discusses the implications of its theoretical underpinnings in two Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) practices. First, it offers the use of the Narrative Mediation model to construct a method to deal with collective trauma, as it affects individuals. Narrative Mediation is presented as the most comprehensive and transformative tool to address collective trauma. Second, an ADR approach to collective trauma is offered in cases where no mediation is possible. The concept of "fitting the forum to the fuss," which is a fundamental organizing mechanism in the ADR field, is applied in this …

Baby Steps To "Grown-Up" Divorce: The Introduction Of The Collaborative Family Law Center And The Continued Need For True No-Fault Divorce In New York, Gabriella L. Zborovsky Jan 2008

Baby Steps To "Grown-Up" Divorce: The Introduction Of The Collaborative Family Law Center And The Continued Need For True No-Fault Divorce In New York, Gabriella L. Zborovsky

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

Part I of this Note describes the current state of divorce law in New York by examining the history of divorce culture in New York, the current state statutory scheme, the law's practical effect on New York residents, and the arguments in support of and against the adoption of no-fault provisions. Part II overviews the collaborative law method, illustrates how the method varies from other alternative dispute resolution methods, and discusses various ethical considerations relevant to the method. Part III argues that the introduction of collaborative law will have minimal practical effects unless combined with the adoption of a no-fault …

Use Of Palm Trees As A Sleeping Site By Hamadryas Baboons In Ethiopia, Amy Schreier, Larissa Swedell Jan 2008

Use Of Palm Trees As A Sleeping Site By Hamadryas Baboons In Ethiopia, Amy Schreier, Larissa Swedell

Publications and Research

Hamadryas baboons sleep on cliffs throughout their range, and this can be attributed to the safety cliffs provide against predators in the absence of tall trees. In this paper, we report the first documented occurrence of hamadryas baboons sleeping in doum palm trees rather than on cliffs. Data derive from a study of hamadryas baboons at the Filoha site in lowland Ethiopia. During all-day follows, data were collected on travel patterns, band activity, and location. Variation in the baboons’ home range was characterized using vegetation transects. We discovered that one band in this population, Band 3, occasionally slept in doum …

Building A Community Modelling And Information Sharing Culture, A. Voinov, R. R. Hood, J. D. Daues, H. Assaf, R. Stewart

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Much of human creativity is geared towards moving energy and materials rather than information, even though information has become another crucial component of human welfare and livelihood. Information, unlike energy and materials, is not subject to conservation laws. By copying information from sources and distributing it to new destinations we do not lose information at the sources. This is what is known as non-rival goods in ecological economics (Daly and Farley, 2003). As with gravity, by using information we do not decrease the ability of others to use it. Nevertheless, exchange of information is restricted by patent law, as well …

The Influence Of Medical Education On The Frequency And Type Of Medical Board Discipline Received By Licensed Florida Physicians, Richard Bonnell Iii Jan 2008

The Influence Of Medical Education On The Frequency And Type Of Medical Board Discipline Received By Licensed Florida Physicians, Richard Bonnell Iii

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It has been estimated that in the United States, between 44,000 to 98,000 patients succumb to medical errors each year. Due to a shortage of graduates of domestic medical schools, many graduates of foreign medical schools are practicing in the United States. The medical education received in foreign medical schools may not be equivalent to the medical education received in domestic medical schools, which are schools located in the United States, Puerto Rico and Canada. Differences due to the educational backgrounds of the foreign-schooled physicians may contribute to an increase in medical board disciplining. Furthermore, graduates of medical schools where …
