Occlusal Loading In Developing Homo Sapiens And Pan Troglodytes Through Finite Element Analyses., Ashley S. Hammond
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Humans wean earliest of the apes yet the eruption of their permanent teeth occurs the latest, resulting in an extended period of time where human children must dissipate occlusal loads through a maxilla which includes two sets of dentition. The objective of this study was to gauge whether the developing permanent teeth act as an additional pillar of support in the human face. Finite element models of a human child and chimpanzee infant from the same dental eruption stage were loaded according to 8 different regimes designed to test the effects of material properties. The results show that the architecture …

Oxygen stable isotope ratios of five fossil genera were used to calculate paleotemperatures and analyze growth histories. Taxa were selected to check for compatibility of results between fossil genera from the same environment. Oxygen stable isotope ratios of …
Philosophy Of Magic, Mark J. Gobeo
Philosophy Of Magic, Mark J. Gobeo
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Throughout history magic has been an art that has instilled awe and wonder in its spectators. The magician used to be held in high esteem, as teacher, as scientist, as priest and even as philosopher. This being the case, throughout the history of philosophy, philosophers have deemed magic to be deception, to be a mode of misleading people into believing what is not true. Through the modern philosophical era, philosophers have been seeking a purely scientific method for questioning reality. It seems that, today, even the magician views his or her art as mere entertainment. The purpose of my thesis …

Passive Optical Networks With A New Bandwidth Allocation Scheme In Ethernet Passive Optical Networks, Sadeta Krijestorac
Passive Optical Networks With A New Bandwidth Allocation Scheme In Ethernet Passive Optical Networks, Sadeta Krijestorac
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
With the ever increasing demand for bandwidth intensive applications like video-ondemand, interactive television services, high-defmition television (HDTV) and internet telephony, the first mile network, referred to as the last mile network in the earlier stages of its development, has proven to solve the "bottleneck" often experienced between users and the central office. The Ethernet Passive Optical Network (EPON), developed by the IEEE 802.3ah Task Force for Ethernet in the First Mile (EFM), resolves this bottleneck by providing the user with a fiber optic link to the central office that has many advantages, such as nearly infinite bandwidth, low cost, easy …
Perspective-Taking In Evaluating Conflict, Elizabeth Courtney White
Perspective-Taking In Evaluating Conflict, Elizabeth Courtney White
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Conflicts between groups are affected by myriad historical and situational factors. Yet people are rarely overwhelmed by this complexity and are able to adopt a coherent depiction of the conflict, often with an unequivocal allocation of blame to one group. A person's final judgment tells only a fraction of the story. To uncover the whole story, numerous factors must be considered. Two such factors are whether the person harbors implicit prejudice toward an involved group and whether the way in which relevant information is presented will allow for the emergence of perspective-taking and provide insight into the conflict that will …

Questions For Animals, Peggy Hamilton
Questions For Animals, Peggy Hamilton
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Through the worlds of cause and effect, forms, and formlessness, echoing the structure of the shrine Borobudur, this work explores these convergences: Paul Oppenheimer's argument that the best origin of sonnet is sonitus, the music of the spheres perceived in this world as a deafening; the experience of Borobudur 's rectangular stone reliefs within a structure that looks angular but is circular; and a deaf woman's observation that vowel sounds conflate on faces under the duress of pleasure or pain. The attempt, as the sonnet moves through the volume, interrupted four times by poems of other types, is to experience …
Reality Of Fiction, Rita C. Butler
Reality Of Fiction, Rita C. Butler
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Zora Neale Hurston's last published novel, Seraph on the Suwanee, can be read as a sociopolitical critique of what she once referred to as the false foundation of Anglo-Saxon civilization. An overview of the history of race as a concept and the development of racial awareness in the United States provides a background/context for understanding the world Hurston was diagnosing: her analysis implies that the social construction of whiteness contains within its ideology the seeds of its own destruction. Feminist notions of origin, context, and foundation highlight the narcissistic nature of patriarchal social systems that exploit not only the female …
Reputation And Trust-Based Security In Wireless Sensor Networks, Avinash. Srinivasan
Reputation And Trust-Based Security In Wireless Sensor Networks, Avinash. Srinivasan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
This dissertation presents the results of research that led to the development of a novel reputation and trust-based monitoring paradigm for secure and reliable computing in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). WSNs have undergone tremendous technological advances over the last few years. They have caused a giant leap toward "proactive computing," a paradigm where computers anticipate human needs and, when necessary, act on their behalf. Therefore, we cannot deploy such a critical technology without first addressing the security and privacy challenges to ensure that it does not turn against those whom it is meant to benefit. The core application of WSNs …
Proto-Feminism, Gender, And Genre: Moderata Fonte And Maria De Zayas Sotomayor's Silent Alliance, Castangia Luisanna Sardu
Proto-Feminism, Gender, And Genre: Moderata Fonte And Maria De Zayas Sotomayor's Silent Alliance, Castangia Luisanna Sardu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
In their comparative study of Medieval and Renaissance European women writers, Pamela Benson and Victoria Kirkham, exploring the relationship between Italian women writers and their English and French counterparts, assumed a "dynamic interaction" existed. Despite the absence of Spanish women writers in that collection when observing the themes and writing strategies ofModerata Fonte and Maria de Zayas Sotomayor, one can observe a number of similarities that points toward a dynamic interaction and moreover, to the transmission of proto-feminist ideas along "memory chains".
Rhetoric Of Federal Mission Statements: Power, Values, And Audience, John J. Donohue
Rhetoric Of Federal Mission Statements: Power, Values, And Audience, John J. Donohue
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Mission statements are an important part of the strategic planning process. In the federal government they are required for cabinet departments. Research about publicsector mission statements has been limited, compared to research on private-sector mission statements. Mission statements are important as artifacts of organizational culture. They introduce and reinforce important organizational values and can be part of a system of control. Within organizational culture and as part of a system of control, mission statements may play a role in creating and maintaining certain power relationships. In this research I examine manifestations of organizational culture and power in cabinet-level federal agencies …
Radicalism At Sea, Elizabeth. Kelly
Radicalism At Sea, Elizabeth. Kelly
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
This thesis explores radicalism at work in M. Maxwell Philip's Emmanuel Appadocca (1854) and China Miâeville's The Scar (2002). These novels highlight piracy as a means of rejecting systems of power and social order. Through speculative fiction, each author finds the means to resist the hegemonic power of genre, race, empire, and knowledge that pervade each author's social and historical milieu. This work examines the historical and literary context of piracy as a metaphor for radicalism, the project of legitimization and resistance to generic categorization of both texts. Emmanuel Appadocca resists racial stereotypes, and both texts exhibit clear resistance to …
Reading, Writing, And Language: The Neo-Slave Novel And The Changing Definition Of Literacy, Pamela H. Segal
Reading, Writing, And Language: The Neo-Slave Novel And The Changing Definition Of Literacy, Pamela H. Segal
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
After examining the neo-slave genre it becomes evident that the definition of the genre provided by AshrafRushdy is incomplete, because it does not include an important component of the narrative, literacy. By adding to Rushdy's definition, the narrative's dimensions change and the discussion of the genre is given a new perspective. Many neo-slave narratives' discussions of literacy correspond to the time of publication, not the time period or setting of the novels. Therefore, by interpreting the development of literacy alongside the neo-slave narrative, one is able to consider the significance of this connection. By examining three novels within the neo-slave …
Remittances, Health And Education: A Cross-Country Study, Maria Cristina Zhunio
Remittances, Health And Education: A Cross-Country Study, Maria Cristina Zhunio
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
This study examines the effects of epistemic motives and individual social structure (strength of social ties) on individual actions. lt has been suggested that the informal structure of relations that develops within firms affects the actions of individuals perhaps more so than formal structure. Ifthis is true, when studying organizations perhaps more effort should be given to examining the effects of the structure of social relations within the firm . This study has attempted to take the first steps in beginning to systematically study identifiable and predictable effects of the informal structure of relations on the behavior of individuals. During …
Scheduling For Composite Event Detection In Wireless Sensor Networks, Arny Isonja Ambrose
Scheduling For Composite Event Detection In Wireless Sensor Networks, Arny Isonja Ambrose
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Wireless sensor networks are used in areas that are inaccessible, inhospitable or for continuous monitoring. The main use of such networks is for event detection. Event detection is used to monitor a particular environment for an event such as fire or flooding. Composite event detection is used to break down the detection of the event into the specific conditions that need to be present for the event to occur. Using this method, each sensor node does not need to carry every sensing component necessary to detect the event. Since energy efficiency is important the sensor nodes need to be scheduled …

Selection Of Canals And Ditches As Foraging Habitat By Wood S7374torks (Mycteria Americana), Os Eleanor K Van
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
A challenge to ensure the health of wading bird populations is to have a better understanding of the altered habitats that we must now consider part of their natural history. Throughout their range endangered Wood Storks (Mycteria americana) have been reported to forage in ditches, a disparate category of linear man-made waterways. In a 52-kmP 2 P study area on the east coast of central Florida, the characteristics of hydrologically diverse ditches were quantified, and their use by Wood Storks documented during their non-breeding season. Logistic regression analyses were carried out using the ditch characteristics as independent variables and Wood …
Sex Wars: Evolved Psychological Sex Differences And Sexual Conflict In The Contexts Of Infidelity, Persuasion, And Hip-Hop Song Lyrics, Alastair P C Davies
Sex Wars: Evolved Psychological Sex Differences And Sexual Conflict In The Contexts Of Infidelity, Persuasion, And Hip-Hop Song Lyrics, Alastair P C Davies
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Although researchers agree that humans exhibit behavioral sex differences, there remains controversy over whether these sex differences are socially constructed or are the product of divergent evolutionary selection pressures on the psychologies of men and women. Through four studies, this dissertation presents evidence that behavioral sex differences have their origin in divergent evolutionary selection pressures and that these sex differences lead to conflict between the sexes. The first two studies investigate a type of sexual infidelity known as human mate poaching. The third study investigates the use of physical attractiveness as a tactic to persuade opposite-sex individuals. The fourth study …
Studies On Stochastic Multi-User Scheduling In Wireless Communication, Di Wang
Studies On Stochastic Multi-User Scheduling In Wireless Communication, Di Wang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
We developed a cross layer design which combines retransmission diversity and multi-user diversity for wireless communication. To this end, a joint design of adaptive modulation and coding with retransmission-based automatic repeat request protocol is outlined. This design is applied to devise multi-user scheduling schemes, which can optimally capture the available multi-user and retransmission diversities. In addition, the proposed on-line scheduling algorithms can operate even when the underl ying fading channel distribution is unknown, while asymptotically converging to the offline benchmark with guarantees on prescribed fairness and rate requirements. Numerical results are provided to verify the merits of our novel schemes …
Structured Flows On Manifolds, Ajay S. Pillai
Structured Flows On Manifolds, Ajay S. Pillai
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Despite the high-dimensional nature of the nervous system, humans produce low-dimensional cognitive and behavioral dynamics. How high-dimensional networks with complex connectivity give rise to functionally meaningful dynamics is not well understood. How does a neural network encode function? How can functional dynamics be systematically obtained from networks? There exist few frameworks in the current literature that answer these questions satisfactorily. In this dissertation I propose a general theoretical framework entitled 'Structured Flows on Manifolds' and its underlying mathematical basis. The framework is based on the principles of non-linear dynamical systems and Synergetics and can be used to understand how high-dimensional …

Subjecting The Chimera Supernova Code To Two Hydrodynamic Test Problems, (I) Riemann Problem And (Ii) Point Blast Explosion, Abu Salah M Ahsan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
A Shock wave as represented by the Riemann problem and a Point-blast explosion are two key phenomena involved in a supernova explosion. Any hydrocode used to simulate supernovae should be subjected to tests consisting of the Riemann problem and the Point-blast explosion. L. I. Sedov's solution of Point-blast explosion and Gary A. Sod's solution of a Riemann problem have been re-derived here from one dimensional fluid dynamics equations . Both these problems have been solved by using the idea of Self-similarity and Dimensional analysis. The main focus of my research was to subject the CHIMERA supernova code to these two …
Study And Design Of A Pifa For A Human-Implanted Rfid Communication System, Yves-Thierry Jean-Charles

This effort studies the implementation of a biocompatible Planar Inverted-F Antenna (PIF A) for the Medical Instrument Communication System (MICS) frequency band of 402 to 405 MHz for RFID applications. The basic electromagnetic properties of human tissues are investigated at 403 .5 MHz. Then, the radiation characteristics of submerged wire antenna are evaluated in order to approximate the effects of multilayered media on a PIFA's performance. The PIFA is assessed using Ansoft's Finite Element Method based electromagnetic evaluation software, HFSS v.l 0. The electrical parameters of the antenna in relation to the surrounding environment, notably air, silicone capsule, and a …
Struck By Aesthetics: Recuperating Folk Drama, Amber L. Estlund
Struck By Aesthetics: Recuperating Folk Drama, Amber L. Estlund
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
As current scholarship has begun to revisit African American theater, there has been an important rediscovery of certain women playwrights of the Harlem Renaissance. Coinciding with this rediscovery has been a tendency, however, to retain the often confusing and oppressive label that has haunted their plays and kept them from serious scholarly attention. Evoking categorizations like "folk drama" and "propaganda plays" oversimplifies the complexities of the terms themselves as well as what the individual women were doing in their writing. The primary focus of this study is to evaluate and recuperate the functions of the term "folk drama" as it …

Tejidos Arquitectonicos: Exploraciones De La Dimimica Entre El Individuo Y La Ciudad En "Walking Around" De Pablo Neruda Y Aura De Carlos Fuentes, Paret Alfredo Palacio
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Silas Weir Mitchell in 1872 defined as "phantom limb" the sensation and feelings of anxiety, confusion and even pain the amputee receives from an absent body part. By extending this concept and applying it to the architectural imagery within literature, it is possible to observe the dynamics between the characters and their structural environment. This thesis explores the relation between spatial structure and identity in two Latin American works: "Walking Around" (1933) by Pablo Neruda and Aura (1962) by Carlos Fuentes. Both authors introduce architecture as an intrinsic element in the construction of their narrative; Neruda's poetic voice wanders around …
The Effects Of An Audio Coaching Intervention On Parents' Interactions With Their Children With Autism, Patricia Oliver
The Effects Of An Audio Coaching Intervention On Parents' Interactions With Their Children With Autism, Patricia Oliver
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Children with autism may present delays in the development of social, communicative and cognitive skills. The behavioral features and patterns of development exhibited across domains can be very distinctive (Volkmar, 1999). This diversity in the expression of autism is what presents the greatest challenge for professionals and parents looking for the most appropriate and effective intervention for this population. Audio coaching intervention is one technology that has been used for over 50 years to train psychologists, medical interns, pre-service teachers, and parents of children with behavioral challenges (Baum, 1976; Crimmins, Bradlyn, St. Lawrence, & Kelly, 1984; Giebelhaus, 1994; Goodman, Brady, …
