An Examination: Using Participatory Action Research In A Marginalized Coastal Community At Risk To Natural Hazards, Joselin Simoneaux Landry

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This extended case study examines the appropriateness of using Participatory Action Research (PAR) in a small, marginalized coastal community at risk to natural hazards. PAR is a method of conducting high-quality research to support the social change goals of diverse cultural and ethnic communities, especially as they relate to community involvement, democracy, emancipation, and liberation (Lindsey and McGuinness (1998). PAR is not the typical research methodology for hazards research. The community's goal was to "Save our heritage and our land". They consisted of 75-80 members who primarily make their living by seafood extraction. This community has experienced social oppression and …

Reasons For The Low Usage Of Scheduling Software And The Difference In Production Performance Between Users And Nonusers Of Scheduling Software From A Lean Manufacturing Perspective, Sandra Yveborg Aug 2008

Reasons For The Low Usage Of Scheduling Software And The Difference In Production Performance Between Users And Nonusers Of Scheduling Software From A Lean Manufacturing Perspective, Sandra Yveborg

Theses

It is more important than ever for printers to improve efficiency and productivity, and the means for doing so are available. Computer-assisted scheduling is one method that is claimed to increase throughput speed and reduce costs, among other benefits. Recently, scheduling applications have started to increase in popularity, and many management information systems (MISs) have built-in scheduling features. However, only 15% of the companies that own scheduling software utilize it. The first part of this research project seeks to determine the reasons for the low usage. Another way to increase efficiency is through Lean manufacturing, a strategy for eliminating non-value-added …

Induction And Peer Coaching Programs In A Middle School Setting, Shanti Ladawn Howard Aug 2008

Induction And Peer Coaching Programs In A Middle School Setting, Shanti Ladawn Howard

Dissertations

While almost half of new teachers engage in some type of induction program, many programs only offer superficial types of assistance including district-wide orientations, periodic workshops, or instruction in classroom management (Gold, 1996). Some induction programs sponsored by the state institute an evaluation process that applies formulaic criteria for defining teaching behaviors to assess new teacher performances (Darling-Hammond et al., 1999). In the continued search for school improvement, there was a need to propose another option in staff development, e.g., peer coaching.

Peer coaching was examined because induction programs did not attend to the individual needs of alternatively certified teachers. …

Fort Zumwalt School District Professional Development Plan: A Qualitative Study Of Current District Perceptions And Proposed Changes, Jackie K. Floyd, Jennifer A. White

Dissertations

In the Fort Zumwalt School District, the professional development program lacks a district focus resulting in different professional endeavors dependent upon popular trends or interests rather than teacher and student achievement needs. Written procedures for evaluating the Fort Zumwalt Professional Development Plan have not been implemented at the district level in a systematic manner resulting in the current plan remaining unchanged and with limited evidence of impact on teaching and classroom practices. The researcher collected data from Fort Zumwalt K-12 certified teachers using three instruments: (a) reflection/evaluation sheets, (b) needs assessments, and (c) an electronic questionnaire. The data from these …

Technological Strategic Planning And Globalization Impact: Fine-Tuning Strategic Planning Methodology, Plamen Miltenoff Aug 2008

Technological Strategic Planning And Globalization Impact: Fine-Tuning Strategic Planning Methodology, Plamen Miltenoff

Theses and Dissertations

Through this research, I sought to determine how technology leadership, as part of academic administration conducts strategic planning in educational technology. The focus in educational technology falls on the various tools of online interaction while the focus on strategic planning falls on SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) analysis. Under the impact of globalization, it is expected that the realm of external data necessary for SWOT analysis must shift from within national boundaries to international data gathering, thus providing a realistic assessment and enabling feasible strategic planning in a global economy. The need for revision was based on a review …

A Strategy For Third-Party Logistics Systems: A Case Analysis Using The Blue Ocean Strategy, Changsu Kim, Kyung Hoon Yang, Jaekyung Kim

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

One of today’s most frequently discussed topics in the business world is how to escape from the intense Red Ocean and how to create an uncontested Blue Ocean. However, because there are few practical guidelines available on this topic, we will introduce a case study of a third-party logistics (3PL) provider, CJ-Global Logistics Service (CJ-GLS), to show how it aspires to be a leader in the newly introduced 3PL industry in South Korea. CJ-GLS is a latecomer in the logistics industry, and its resources, such as the number of trucks and warehouses, are relatively small in comparison to those of …

Implementing Assessment In An Outcome-Based Marketing Curriculum, Norm A. Borin, Lynn E. Metcalf, Brian C. Tietje

Marketing

This article describes the development and implementation of assessment in our new outcome-based marketing curriculum (described fully in Borin, Metcalf, and Tietje 2007). Outcomes for the marketing curriculum were specified at the program, department, course, and lesson levels. Direct embedded assessments as well as indirect assessment methods were used to gauge student achievement. Results indicate that, on both self-reported (indirect) and direct, as well as non-embedded and embedded assessments, significant value-added learning occurred. We chronicle the stages in developing and implementing an assessment plan, and reflect on our experiences in the process to provide a roadmap for other marketing departments …

Core Curricular Elements Of Effective Undergraduate Technology Management Academic Programs, Pamela R. Becker

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Technology management skills have become increasingly important to employers in today’s rapidly changing technological environment; yet a scarcity of research exists regarding desired core competencies of undergraduate technology management majors. The purpose of this study was to determine the core curricular elements of an effective undergraduate technology management academic program.

A quantitative mixed-mode (Internet-based and paper-based) survey design using a 5-point Likert rating (strongly agree, somewhat agree, neither agree nor disagree, somewhat disagree, and strongly disagree) was used to solicit opinions from members of the sample population regarding core curricular elements of effective undergraduate technology management programs. Implementation of this …

Self-Organization": A New Metaphor To Understand The Interdependences Of The Organizations And Their Environments, Tarek Mohamed Ali Jul 2008

Self-Organization": A New Metaphor To Understand The Interdependences Of The Organizations And Their Environments, Tarek Mohamed Ali

Business Administration

Self-organization metaphors have recently emerged to enrich research on organizational environment in particular, with respect to the networking view that presents organizational environment as a complex web of interactions among groups of organizations. The network analysis promotes the group members’ sensitivity to the variety in environmental demands. In an attempt to clarify how self-organization enhances the group’s sensitivity, we propose the interdisciplinary autopoietic and habitus-field models. The proposed self-organization models allow portraying business organizations as networks of decision communications and integrated partners. Self-referential and self-reflexivity processes have been utilized by the models to guide a group of decision makers and …

Making Academic Work Advocacy Work: Technologies Of Power In The Public Arena, Amy Propen, Mary Lay Schuster

English

Through interviews and courtroom observations in a case study done in collaboration with a community partner in two judicial districts in Minnesota, the authors extend the scholarly conversation about critical, activist research in business and technical communication and make pedagogical suggestions by studying two groups who contribute to the discourse about victim rights: judges who accept plea negotiations and make sentencing decisions and advocates who help victims contribute, through victim impact statements, their reactions as crime victims and their requests for certain punishments and conditions for the crime perpetrators. The authors identify the technologies of power used by each group …

Climate Models: An Assessment Of Strengths And Limitations, David Bader, Curt Covey, William Gutowski, Isaac Held, Kenneth Kunkel, Ronald Miller, Robin Tokmakian, Minghua Zhang

United States Department of Energy: Publications

Scientists extensively use mathematical models of Earth’s climate, executed on the most powerful computers available, to examine hypotheses about past and present-day climates. Development of climate models is fully consistent with approaches being taken in many other fields of science dealing with very complex systems. These climate simulations provide a framework within which enhanced understanding of climate-relevant processes, along with improved observations, are merged into coherent projections of future climate change. This report describes the models and their ability to simulate current climate.
The science of climate modeling has matured through finer spatial resolution, the inclusion of a greater number …
