The Effects Of Moisture On The Ectomycorrhizal Communities On Pinus Ponderosa, Helen Lau
All Master's Theses
The effects of moisture on the community of beneficial fungi called ectomycorrhizae were compared in two adjacent ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) forests. Stands selected for this study were of populations of ponderosa pine along a natural moisture cline at the extreme limit of their distribution in eastern Washington State. Diversity and community structure was assessed for the ectomycorrhizal fungi living as mutualists on the root tips of this tree species. Identification of fungi recovered from this study was performed with the use of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) molecular markers and molecular techniques which discriminated taxa to phylotypes, which approximates …
Waterhole Dynamics And Chemical Signals Of African Elephants ( Loxodonta Africana ), Stacie Marie Castelda
Waterhole Dynamics And Chemical Signals Of African Elephants ( Loxodonta Africana ), Stacie Marie Castelda
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
The distribution of mammals in a savanna environment is influenced by abiotic and biotic factors. The African savanna experiences distinct wet and dry seasons. Species become spatially restricted around water resources during the dry season, resulting in increased intraspecies and interspecies resource-based aggregation. A dominate species, such as the African elephant (Loxodonta africana), may influence this aggregation. I examined the influence of wet and dry seasons and ambient temperature on the use of a waterhole by elephants as well as the co-occurrence of elephants and other mammals at the waterhole. Biodiversity scans (October 2004-June 2007) and were performed at a …

A Prairie Perspective On Global Warming And Climate Change: The Use Of Law, Technology, And Economics To Establish Private Sector Markets To Compliment Kyoto, Ronald C. Griffin
Journal Publications
We are in the midst of an environmental calamity that few perceive as grave. The climate is changing. Civilization is suffering. One person can do little to cope with these problems on a global scale. But farmers can do something about their farming operations to contribute less to climate change.
Today, two percent of the population feeds us. With mechanical advancements, new farm machinery, innovative practices, products, commodities, securities, and markets folk can do something to reward farmers for their efforts to slow the pace of climate change.

Gender Influence On Perceptions Of Healthy And Unhealthy Lifestyles, Tracy Budesa, Erin Egnor, Lauren Howell
All Volumes (2001-2008)
The purpose of this study was to determine if a gender bias exists in perceptions of a healthy vs. unhealthy lifestyle. The study was a 2 (male or female) x 2 (healthy or unhealthy) between subjects factorial design. College students (N = 53) read a scenario describing a lifestyle of a stimulus person. The participants then answered a 16-item questionnaire. The hypothesis that there is a gender difference in perceptions of a healthy lifestyle was not strongly supported. There was a strong main effect for the type of lifestyle with participants viewing the healthy lifestyle more positively. The hypothesis that …

Soil Salinity Alters Growth, Chlorophyll Content, And Secondary Metabolite Accumulation In Catharanthus Roseus, Cheruth Abdul Jaleel, Beemarao Sankar, Ramalingam Sridharan, Rajaram Panneerselvam
Turkish Journal of Biology
The effect of salinity on growth, photosynthetic pigment content, and alkaloid secondary metabolite accumulation were studied in an economically important medicinal plant, Catharanthus roseus (L.) G. Don., under pot culture conditions. Plants were treated with different concentrations of NaCl, (e.g. 50 and 100 mM) 30, 45, 60, and 75 days after sowing (DAS). The plants were uprooted randomly 90 DAS to analyse growth, and chlorophyll and alkaloid content. Salinity affected all the morphological parameters and decreased growth performance. At low salinity regimes, a slight decrease was noted in chlorophyll a and b, and total chlorophyll content, but under high salinity …

Improvement Of The Nutritional Value Of Soybean [Glycine Max (L) Merr.] Seed With Alteration In Protein Subunits Of Glycinin (11s Globulin) And \Beta-Conglycinin (7s Globulin), Behzad Kaviani, Ardashir Kharabian
Turkish Journal of Biology
Protein quality in soybean seeds is strongly influenced by nutritional conditions. Glycinin (11S globulin) and \beta-conglycinin (7S globulin) are the 2 main proteins in soybean seeds. Protein quality of glycinin (11S) is higher than that of \beta-conglycinin (7S), due to the presence of higher amounts of s-containing amino acids (methionine and cysteine) in glycinin than \beta-conglycinin. Of the amino acids in glycinin, 3%-4.5% are methionine and cysteine but these important amino acids are not found in \beta-conglycinin (especially \beta-subunit). Pot studies were conducted with soybean [Glycine max (L) Merr.] grown under various levels of KCl and CaHPO4 and the effects …

Specific Individuals Of Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss) Are Able To Show Time-Place Learning, M. Saeed Heydarnejad, G. J. Purser
Turkish Journal of Biology
Using demand-feeders, time-place learning association of food was investigated in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) in 2 small raceways (TR1 and TR2). In order for the fish to be visually identified, they were tagged individually and their behaviour and distribution were monitored by cameras. Equipping with a demand-feeder, TR1 was assigned to test 2 times/1 place (2T/1P) while 2 demand-feeders were used in TR2 assigned to test 2 times/2 places (2T/2P). After 26 days of restricted feeding (RF) the fish were deprived of food for 3 days. The results of the present study indicate that, at the group level, rainbow trout …

Introduction Of Quality Of Care And A Gender Perspective In Reproductive Health Service Organizations In Latin America And The Caribbean, Patricia Riveros, Antonieta Martin, Ricardo Vernon
Reproductive Health
In 2005 and with the technical assistance of the Frontiers in Reproductive Health (FRONTIERS) Program, the Integrated Health Coordination Program (PROCOSI), a Bolivian network of 33 nongovernmental organizations, designed and tested a set of four guidelines to help organizations deliver high-quality reproductive health services with a gender perspective. The guidelines were: 1) to present a strategy to certify organizations as “gender sensitive” healthcare providers; 2) to present the knowledge staff members should know to be certified; 3) to describe procedures to collect and analyze the data to evaluate implementation of the strategy; and 4) to describe how to assess strategy …

Investigation Of The Sex Determination Mechanisms In Summer Flounder (Paralichthys Dentatus) And Black Sea Bass (Centropristis Striata), Heidi R. Colburn
Master's Theses and Capstones
In many cultured finfish species, sexually dimorphic growth is observed, therefore, understanding the mechanisms of differentiation in fishes is necessary for successful aquaculture. Summer flounder (Paralichthys dentatus ) and black sea bass (Centropristis striata) are good candidate species for aquaculture because they easily adapt to culture conditions and have high market value. The production of monosex populations is advantageous in species exhibiting sexually dimorphic growth rates. The purpose of this research was to gain an understanding of the mechanisms involved in sex differentiation of summer flounder and black sea bass. In summer flounder, monosex female culture is beneficial because females …

An Investigation Of Recycled/Industrial Materials To Attenuate Hydrogen Sulfide Resulting From The Use Of Construction And Demolition Debris Fines, Kelly Ann Melendez Loaiza
Master's Theses and Capstones
One of the products of Construction and Demolition (C&D) debris recycling is C&D debris fines. C&D debris fines closely resemble soil. They may contain metal scraps, gypsum drywall, wood, soil, shingles, and concrete. Landfills have utilized C&D debris fines as alternative daily cover and/or shaping and grading material. The use of C&D debris fines has been linked to diffuse hydrogen sulfide emissions at landfills. Hydrogen sulfide emissions are not only a nuisance, but may pose a health hazard to landfill workers. This research investigates how recycled materials may be used to attenuate hydrogen sulfide emissions resulting from the use of …

Image Analysis Techniques For Vertebra Anomaly Detection In X-Ray Images, Mohammed Das
Masters Theses
"In this research, imaging techniques are investigated for the analysis and detection of abnormalities in cervical and lumbar vertebrae. Detecting vertebra anomalies pertaining to osteoarthritis such as claw, traction and anterior osteophytes can aide in treatment plans for the patient. New size invariant features were developed for the detection of claw, traction and anterior osteophytes in cervical spine vertebrae. Using a K-means clustering and nearest centroid classification approach, the results were generated that were capable of discriminating cervical vertebrae for presence of anomalies related to osteophytes. The techniques developed can be integrated into systems based on querying spine images to …
The Identification And Characterization Of Phenylalanine Ammonia-Lyase Gene Family Members In Glycine Max, Erin Kathleen Pringle
The Identification And Characterization Of Phenylalanine Ammonia-Lyase Gene Family Members In Glycine Max, Erin Kathleen Pringle
Masters Theses
"Gene families are collections of genes with similar functions. Studying gene families is important for understanding the evolution of genes and manipulating genes. Phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) is an enzyme found in plants. It catalyzes the deamination of phenylalanine to produce cinnamic acid. Genes for PAL have been identified in many different plant species. This project used the known sequence for the PAL1 gene in Glycine max to find other PAL genes in Glycine max"--Abstract, page iii.
A Rapid Method For Determination Of Alpha Hydroxy Acids In Seawater And Biological Fluids At Trace Levels, Ryan Lee Schwiderski
A Rapid Method For Determination Of Alpha Hydroxy Acids In Seawater And Biological Fluids At Trace Levels, Ryan Lee Schwiderski
Masters Theses
"Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) - carboxylic acids with a hydroxyl substitution on the alpha carbon are an important class of molecules. Hydroxy Methyl Thiobutanoic Acid (HMTBA) is an α-hydroxy analog of essential amino acid methionine; it finds extensive use as a feed supplement for avian and bovine species. Efficacy of alpha hydroxy acid uptake is important for nutritional studies and such studies rely on accurate and precise methods for determination of these chemicals in biological samples. Several methods for AHAs determination have been reported, however, the methods are tedious, requiring multiple sample preparation steps. Experiments reported in this thesis were …

The Vast Injustice Perpetuated By State And Local Tax Policy, Susan Pace Hamill
Hofstra Law Review
State and local tax policy is one of the most important areas of public policy affecting the lives of the most powerless and vulnerable segments of the population - children from low income families. Focusing on the funding of primary and secondary education, especially in high poverty school districts, and the scheme for allocating the tax burden, this article empirically proves that all fifty states have unjust state and local tax policy, with thirty-one states inflicting an extreme level of injustice on poor children and their families. This article argues that the people in most states, as well as their …
