Social Presence, Satisfaction, And Perceived Learning Of Rn-To-Bsn Students In Web-Based Nursing Courses, Susan Cobb

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

While the development of online education has been progressing rapidly, further evaluation research is needed (Atack and Rankin, 2002; Halter et al., 2006). There is a need for further research on nursing students' experiences and satisfaction with online education, and correlating factors to promote the quality of online learning. Social presence is one factor that has been shown to affect outcomes such as satisfaction and perceived learning in online courses (Gunawardena and Zittle, 1997).

The purpose of this study was to assess social presence in online nursing courses and its relationship to student satisfaction and perceived learning. The theoretical framework …

The Experience Of Older Men Living Alone: A Phenomenological Perspective, Leslie Susan Yetter Jan 2008

The Experience Of Older Men Living Alone: A Phenomenological Perspective, Leslie Susan Yetter

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to uncover older men's experience of living alone. This study was pursued because much of the literature reports that older men who live alone face the highest risk of death, mental illness, physical disability, and social isolation in our country. Based upon this literature, nurses appeared to be ignoring the needs of this vulnerable population. Using Giorgi's phenomenological method, 14 men 60 years and older who lived alone were interviewed and asked about their experience living alone. In the data analysis, the themes of self-growth, self-determination, structure, balance and sense of purpose emerged. Essentially, …

The Effects Of Using Prescribed Fire Or Mowing To Maintain Early Successional Wildlife Habitat, Kathleen M. Barrett

Master's Theses and Capstones

This study involves a comparison and results between prescribed burns and mowing in order to maintain openings in early successional stages at Great Bay National Wildlife Refuge, Newington, NH. The prescribed fire was conducted by a US Fish and Wildlife fire crew on 19 September 2001. The mowing was completed during the third week of October 2001 by staff and volunteers.

Special attention was given to non-native invasive species, with some species tending to increase with a fall burn. The mowed study sites did not seem to have a significant increase in growth or spread of invasive species.

Patent Judicial Wisdom, Srividhya Ragavan Jan 2008

Patent Judicial Wisdom, Srividhya Ragavan

Faculty Scholarship

This paper discusses the role of the Indian Judiciary vis-A-vis the patent regime, but carefully avoids creating an exhaustive wish list. Instead, this paper uses illustrations from the United States to draw valuable lessons. Importantly, the paper does not advocate that the Indian Judiciary emulate the United States judiciary. In fact, conventional wisdom dictates that copying the policies or precedents of the West does not always work in developing countries given the stark differences in ground realities like poverty, investments, infrastructure, and other such indicators. Instead, the judicial wisdom that characterizes each of the illustrations sets the common thread for …

Envisioning The Future Of Aboriginal Health Under The Health Transfer Process, Constance Macintosh Jan 2008

Envisioning The Future Of Aboriginal Health Under The Health Transfer Process, Constance Macintosh

Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press

The Canadian government, and many Aboriginal communities, are committed to formally transferring varying aspects of governance responsibilities from federal hands to Aboriginal ones. These transfers take various forms, from creating Aboriginal political bodies with broad sets of governance powers, as was the case with the Nisga'a Treaty of 2000, to more partial transfers of specific powers or responsibilities, or types of responsibilities. One core transfer area is public health programming, for which there are specific and highly developed initiatives dating back to around 1989. Although it is expected that these initiatives will, overall, have very positive effects for improving the …

Prenatal Management Of Anencephaly, Rebecca J. Cook, Joanna Erdman, Martin Hevia, Bernard M. Dickens

Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press

About a third of anencephalic fetuses are born alive, but they are not conscious or viable, and soon die. This neural tube defect can be limited by dietary consumption of foliates, and detected prenatally by ultrasound and other means. Many laws permit abortion, on this indication or on the effects of pregnancy and prospects of delivery on a woman's physical or mental health. However, abortion is limited under some legal systems, particularly in South America. To avoid criminal liability, physicians will not terminate pregnancies, by induced birth or abortion, without prior judicial approval. Argentinian courts have developed means to resolve …

Going Out On A Limb: Prosthetics, Normalcy And Disputing The Therapy/Enhancement Distinction, Isabel Karpin, Roxanne Mykitiuk

Articles & Book Chapters

The development of genetic technologies, nano-technologies and technologies related to artificial intelligence have provoked discussion about the different uses to which they may be put; namely, their potential for therapeutic and non-therapeutic use. Resisting claims that individuals should be free to use these technologies as they see fit to alter their own physical, psychological and intellectual capacities, lifespan and morphologies or those of their existing or future children, some authors contend that both ethical and regulatory limits should be placed on this exercise of free choice.

Obesity, Poverty, And The Built Environment: Challenges And Opportunities, Wendy Collins Perdue Jan 2008

Obesity, Poverty, And The Built Environment: Challenges And Opportunities, Wendy Collins Perdue

Law Faculty Publications

Obesity is linked to behaviors related to food consumption and physical activity. Although the factors affecting behaviors in these areas are complex, there is growing evidence that the physical characteristics of many of our communities, and particularly poorer communities, encourage obesity-generating behaviors including a sedentary lifestyle arid unhealthy eating habits. This paper explores the relationship between obesity causing behavior and the physical characteristics of communities and highlights some of the challenges and opportunities associated with changing those physical characteristics.

A Modelling Study Of Developmental Stage And Environmental Variability Effects On Copepod Foraging, Jerry D. Wiggert, Eileen E. Hofmann, Gustav-Adolf Paffenhöfer Jan 2008

A Modelling Study Of Developmental Stage And Environmental Variability Effects On Copepod Foraging, Jerry D. Wiggert, Eileen E. Hofmann, Gustav-Adolf Paffenhöfer

CCPO Publications

We used a stochastic Lagrangian model to study how behaviour contributes to copepod grazing success. The model simulates distinct foraging behaviours of Clausocalanus furcatus, Paracalanus aculeatus, and Oithona plumifera. Three sets of simulations were performed to investigate the effects of (a) prey-size preference; (b) variation in prey-size spectra; and (c) turbulence intensity on these species’ grazing rates. The size preference simulations demonstrate that, compared with copepodites, mature females have cell ingestion rates that are an order of magnitude lower, while carbon uptake is reduced by 35%. A prey spectrum that is skewed towards cells ,<6 >μm promotes copepodite …

Effect Of Micronutrient Fortification On Nutritional And Other Properties Of Nixtamal Tortillas, K. E. Burton, Frost M. Steele, Laura K. Jefferies, Oscar A. Pike, Michael L. Dunn Jan 2008

Effect Of Micronutrient Fortification On Nutritional And Other Properties Of Nixtamal Tortillas, K. E. Burton, Frost M. Steele, Laura K. Jefferies, Oscar A. Pike, Michael L. Dunn

Faculty Publications

Nixtamalization is the process of steeping dried corn in hot water with calcium hydroxide (lime) with subsequent removal of all or most of the pericarp through washing. The resulting product is called nixtamal. Approximately 60% of corn tortillas in Mexico are produced from nixtamal, with the remainder prepared from nixtamalized corn flour. Nixtamal was fortified with micronutrient premix containing iron, zinc, folic acid, niacin, riboflavin, and thiamin. Premix composition followed a proposed Mexican regulation for corn flour fortification, adjusted for moisture. Effects of premix on masa adhesiveness, hardness, and pH, as well as tortilla sensory properties, stretchability, rollability, and color …

Structural Bone Density Of Pacific Cod (Gadus Macrocephalus) And Halibut (Hippoglossus Stenolepis): Taphonomic And Archaeological Implications, Ross E. Smith Jan 2008

Structural Bone Density Of Pacific Cod (Gadus Macrocephalus) And Halibut (Hippoglossus Stenolepis): Taphonomic And Archaeological Implications, Ross E. Smith

Dissertations and Theses

Describing prehistoric human subsistence strategies and mobility patterns using archaeofaunal assemblages requires archaeologists to differentiate the effects of human behavior from natural taphonomic processes. Previous studies demonstrate that differences in bone density both within and between taxa contribute to variation in element representation in archaeofaunal assemblages. Measurements of contemporary Pacific Cod (Gadus macrocephalus) and Pacific Halibut (Hippoglossus stenolepis) skeletal elements using Dual Energy Absorptiometry (DEXA) and hydrostatic weighing revealed differences in bone volume density between elements and taxa.

Density values were highest in Pacific cod and halibut jaw elements; the lowest bone volume densities were measured in Pacific cod and …

Assessing Participatory Development Processes Through Knowledge Building, David Bleckley Jan 2008

Assessing Participatory Development Processes Through Knowledge Building, David Bleckley

SPNA Review

Participatory development is seen by many to be the answer to the issues of ineffectiveness and insustainability which plague externally-imposed international community development. Critics discount this, questioning the inclusivity and sustainability of participatory methods. This paper argues that stakeholders undertaking truly participatory development must balance power to create a discourse surrounding the development effort. The effect of this dialog is knowledge building. It is hypothesized that the overall effectiveness of participatory development efforts can be assessed by evaluating the knowledge building that occurs throughout the efforts. A model, based upon Bessette (2004), is presented as a means of framing such …

Would You Like Some First Amendment Rights With That - How Mandatory Nutritional Disclosure On Restaurant Menus Violate The Freedom Of Commercial Speech, Nicole Anderson

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

Allegations of a so-called "obesity epidemic" have spawned widespread panic throughout the United States. Legislators in California and New York have answered the outcry by crafting regulations which would mandate the disclosure of nutritional information of food items on restaurant menus and menu boards. Although these regulations dream of promoting healthier eating habits throughout the community, they do so by depriving restaurants of their First Amendment rights. A closer look at the regulations reveals a glaring violation of restaurants' freedom of commercial speech, forcing the restaurants to communicate the government's message to their customers without any true causal link between …

A Relationship Analysis Of Restaurant Inspection Violations, Employee Behaviors, And Inspection Grades, Edward G Mckeown Jan 2008

A Relationship Analysis Of Restaurant Inspection Violations, Employee Behaviors, And Inspection Grades, Edward G Mckeown

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of the paper is to determine whether employee behaviors or non-employee behaviors have a more significant effect on health inspection grades given by the Southern Nevada Health District. As foodborne illness outbreaks continue to rise, discovering whether the violations stem from employee behaviors or from items not related to employee behavior is essential. The results will be useful for both industry and academics in helping to establish a means for understanding where violations occur within food establishments; 205 restaurant health inspections were collected with grades other than 'A'. Behavior based violations had a higher impact on the grade. …
