BACKGROUND: Blood pressure is directly and causally associated with body mass index (BMI) in populations worldwide. However, the relationship may vary across BMI in populations of African origin. METHODS: We compared the relationship between blood pressure and BMI in populations of African origin, using 13 samples from Africa, the Caribbean, the United Kingdom and the United States. We had access to data from individual participants for age, height, weight, blood pressure, and treatment of hypertension. Analysis was restricted to 18,072 participants (age 35-64 years; 44% men). We carried out multivariate regression analysis to estimate the relationship between blood pressure and …
Nesting And Brood-Rearing Success And Resource Selection Of Greater Sage-Grouse In Northwestern South Dakota, Nicholas W. Kaczor
Nesting And Brood-Rearing Success And Resource Selection Of Greater Sage-Grouse In Northwestern South Dakota, Nicholas W. Kaczor
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Understanding population dynamics and resource selection is crucial in developing wildlife resource management plans, particularly for sensitive species. Greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) populations have declined range-wide at a rate of 2% per year from 1965 to 2003. In South Dakota, populations have generally declined. Reasons for the decline are mostly attributed to human-induced factors such as sagebrush degradation and removal, improper range management practices, oil and gas exploration, and West Nile virus infection. Sage-grouse occupy habitats at the eastern edge of their range in western South Dakota. We conducted a 2-year study to investigate the nesting and brood-rearing ecology of …

The potential economic benefits of combining tactical anthelmintic treatment for gastrointestinal nematodes and nutritional supplementation with urea-molasses blocks were examined in Boer goats raised under extensive grazing conditions in the summer rainfall area of South Africa. Eight groups of nine goats were monitored over a 12-month period from 1 October 2002 to 9 October 2003. Ad libitum nutritional supplementation with urea-molasses blocks was provided when the goats were housed at night, during the summer (wet season-December 2002 to February 2003), and/or the winter (dry season-June 2003 to August 2003). All the goats were treated symptomatically for Haemonchus contortus infection when …

A significant number of Army soldiers are sufficiently overweight to exceed the maximum weight allowances defned by the Army weight control program (AR600-9). Also, the body weights of a substantial number of soldiers approach the maximum weight allowances. These soldiers should not gain additional weight if they are to meet Army weight allowances. The conventional approach to this overweight problem is assigning soldiers to remedial physical training and mandatory reflerral for nutrition counseling by a health care provider. An alternative to this conventional approach is to target the entire population of soldiers (populationbased intervention) to promote weight loss in overweight …

Care And Maintenance To Reduce Vascular Access Complications, Registered Nurses' Association Of Ontario
Care And Maintenance To Reduce Vascular Access Complications, Registered Nurses' Association Of Ontario
General Submissions: Community and Population-based Materials
This best practice guideline focuses on assisting all nurses in diverse practice settings, both institutional and community, who provide care to clients requiring vascular access. This guideline incorporates best practices related to the care and maintenance of vascular access devices applicable to all adult clients requiring this kind of care. It should be noted that the main focus of this guideline is the care and maintenance of central venous access devices (CVAD); however, where care and maintenance strategies can be used for both CVAD and peripheral venous access devices (PVAD), this has been articulated in the specific recommendations.

General Submissions: Community and Population-based Materials
This best practice guideline aims to assist nurses working in diverse practice settings provide evidence-based oral health care to adults with special needs. Within the scope of this guideline, those with special needs may include older adults, those who are medically compromised, intellectually challenged, physically challenged, and/or have severe and persistent mental illness. Many may be frail or dependent upon caregivers to help with their activities of daily living. These adults may live in the community or may be in institutions. It should be noted that children have special assessment needs related to developmental stages that are beyond the scope …
Comparison Of Estradiol-Trenbolone Acetate Implant Programs For Yearling Steers Of Two Genotypes, Robbi H. Pritchard
Comparison Of Estradiol-Trenbolone Acetate Implant Programs For Yearling Steers Of Two Genotypes, Robbi H. Pritchard
South Dakota Beef Report, 2008
Yearling steers (n = 400) were used to evaluate relative payout periods for implants when feeding high grain content diets. Implant treatments included (1) control (nonimplanted), (2) Synovex Plus, (3) revalor-s, and (4) Ralgro-revalor-s. The Synovex Plus (2), revalor-s (3) and Ralgro (4) were administered on day 1. The reimplant with revalor-s (4) was admnistered after 56 d on feed. Steers were managed in two groups. Initial BW and days fed were 782 lb, 131 d (Group I), and 661 lb, 145 d (Group II). Implants increased production rates and efficiencies, increased carcass size and reduced marbling when compared to …

Maternal Awareness Of The Association Between Paediatric Diet And Adult Disease Risk: A Follow-Up To The Dit-Coombe Hospital Study., Qianling Zhou, Katherine Younger, John Kearney
Conference Papers
Chronic disease has been traditionally attributed to risk factors in adulthood; however, current orthodoxy suggests that the true origins of such diseases are initiated much earlier in life from inappropriate nutritional circumstances arising during the formative years(1). The present study was undertaken to examine current maternal attitudes towards the importance of paediatric diet in relation to adult diseases and to determine the extent to which attitudinal differences between subgroups in the population exist. A non-randomised postal follow-up survey to the DIT–Coombe Hospital Infant Feeding Study was carried out, involving the recruitment of 209 mothers from a pool sample of 520 …

Nutrient Uptake By Intact And Disturbed Roots Of Loblolly Pine Seedlings, Melissa S. Lucash, Ruth D. Yanai, J. Devereux Joslin
Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations
Most measurements of nutrient uptake use either hydroponic systems or soil-grown roots that have been disturbed by excavation. The first objective of this study was to test how root excavation affects nitrate uptake. Rates of NO3− uptake by mycorrhizal loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) seedlings were measured in intact sand-filled columns, hydroponics, and disturbed sand-filled columns. Total nitrate uptake in intact sand-filled columns was higher than in disturbed columns, indicating that disturbance lowers uptake. Transferring plants from the sand-filled columns to hydroponics had little effect on NO3− uptake beyond delaying uptake for an hour. The second objective of this study …
Ultraviolet Light Traps: Design Affects Attraction And Capture, Jerome Hogsette
Ultraviolet Light Traps: Design Affects Attraction And Capture, Jerome Hogsette
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Traps that use ultraviolet light as an attractant for flies are widely used in urban situations. To determine the differences in trap efficacy from design and lighting, pairs of traps were compared under laboratory conditions. Comparisons were made between traps with open fronts and with traps with restricted open fronts, black light bulbs, and black light blue bulbs, and glue boards with and without z-9-tricosene pheromone. In a windowless laboratory, pairs of traps were placed approximately 90 cm above the floor and 3 m apart. Fifty mixed-sex, 3- to 5-day-old house flies (Musca domestica) were released and …
