Regulation Of Apical Dominance In Aspergillus Nidulans Hyphae By Reactive Oxygen Species, Camile P. Semighini, Steven D. Harris Jan 2008

Regulation Of Apical Dominance In Aspergillus Nidulans Hyphae By Reactive Oxygen Species, Camile P. Semighini, Steven D. Harris

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

In fungal hyphae, apical dominance refers to the suppression of secondary polarity axes in the general vicinity of a growing hyphal tip. The mechanisms underlying apical dominance remain largely undefined, although calcium signaling may play a role. Here, we describe the localized accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the apical region of Aspergillus nidulans hyphae. Our analysis of atmA (ATM) and prpA (PARP) mutants reveals a correlation between localized production of ROS and enforcement of apical dominance. We also provide evidence that NADPH oxidase (Nox) or related flavoproteins are responsible for the generation of ROS at hyphal tips and …

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Plant pathology lost a distinguished pioneer in plant virology with the death of Dr. Myron K. Brakke on 15 June 2007. Those who were his close colleagues also lost a valued mentor, an irreplaceable friend, and a trusted adviser. Brakke’s most notable accomplishment was the development of sucrose density gradient centrifugation for the purification and characterization of viruses and macromolecules, which led to major advances in biochemistry and molecular biology. He also was responsible for introducing numerous techniques and equipment for fractionation of macromolecules that were crucial for the development of virology, biochemistry, and molecular biology. In the early stages …

Posthumour Children, Hegemonic Human Rights, And The Dilemma Of Reform - Conservations Across Cultres, Uche Ewerlukwa Jan 2008

Posthumour Children, Hegemonic Human Rights, And The Dilemma Of Reform - Conservations Across Cultres, Uche Ewerlukwa

UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice

This Article compares the unequal treatment of posthumous procreation in Africa and in the Western world within the contexts of jurisprudence and human rights discourse. Though customary law recognizes the legality of posthumous procreation in many parts of Africa, courts and international human rights advocates have condemned the practice as repugnant to public policy, public morality, and public health. The fact that comparable processes in the West have been ignored or even promoted suggests a double standard in human rights discourse, perhaps even an attempt to delegitimize non-Western customs while imposing Western values on non-Western societies. The Article urges cross-cultural …

The Impact Of Storage Container Materials On Iga In Human Breast Milk Stored At Two Different Temperatures, Matthew D. Jenkins

Theses

This study investigated the relationship between the type of material and the concentration of IgA in human milk stored at two temperatures over time. Twelve breastfeeding mothers participated in the study with samples of milk obtained at locations of the participant's preference and transported to the laboratory in a sterile Snappies PP container stored in a cooler filled with ice. The sample was divided up and pipetted into 12 containers. IgA concentrations were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay at time zero, 9, 24, 48, 72 and 168 hours. Milk IgA concentration decreased in all containers, with the exception of polycarbonate …

Micronutrients And Animal Nutrition And The Link Between The Application Of Micronutrients To Crops And Animal Health, George E. J. Fisher Jan 2008

Micronutrients And Animal Nutrition And The Link Between The Application Of Micronutrients To Crops And Animal Health, George E. J. Fisher

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Micronutrients (or 'trace elements') are required in animal diets for health and welfare, and therefore they are essential for the agricultural production of milk, meat, fibre, and eggs. It is clear from the literature that deficiencies of micronutrients, particularly in their sub-clinical form where they are not visually apparent, can result in major reductions in productivity. Micronutrients are used mostly as the central elements of enzymes and co-enzymes in the biochemistry of ruminants and monogastrics. Thus, their deficiency often leads to sub-optimal growth and fertility. Within the farming system, the aim should be to only use supplementation with micronutrients where …

Pilot Study For An Assessment Of Vegetation Structure For Steppe Rangelands Of Central Anatolia, Hüseyi̇n Kansur Firincioğlu, Bi̇lal Şahi̇n, Steven Seefeldt, Fehmi̇ Mert, Basri̇ Hakan Hakyemez, Meci̇t Vural Jan 2008

Pilot Study For An Assessment Of Vegetation Structure For Steppe Rangelands Of Central Anatolia, Hüseyi̇n Kansur Firincioğlu, Bi̇lal Şahi̇n, Steven Seefeldt, Fehmi̇ Mert, Basri̇ Hakan Hakyemez, Meci̇t Vural

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

In the last 50 years, rangelands in the Central Anatolian Region of Turkey have been converted to cropping lands, which has negatively accelerated vegetation change, resulting in overgrazing and poor condition and productivity. In these steppe rangelands, to develop a rational basis for making restoration and management decisions, the vegetation structure must be well understood. Thus, the objectives of this study were to: (1) define vegetation patterns through assessing spatial distribution of the plant species and groups, (2) evaluate the relationships between vegetation and environmental aspects and range condition, and (3) outline possible restoration implementations. Therefore, a study was carried …

Epistemological Pluralism: Reorganizing Interdisciplinary Research, Thaddeus R. Miller, Timothy D. Baird, Caitlin M. Littlefield, Gary Kofinas, F. Stuart Chapin Iii, Charles L. Redman

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations

Despite progress in interdisciplinary research, difficulties remain. In this paper, we argue that scholars, educators, and practitioners need to critically rethink the ways in which interdisciplinary research and training are conducted. We present epistemological pluralism as an approach for conducting innovative, collaborative research and study. Epistemological pluralism recognizes that, in any given research context, there may be several valuable ways of knowing, and that accommodating this plurality can lead to more successful integrated study. This approach is particularly useful in the study and management of social–ecological systems. Through resilience theory's adaptive cycle, we demonstrate how a focus on epistemological pluralism …

Seeking A Seat At The Table: Has Law Left Environmental Ethics Behind, As It Embraces Bioethics?,, Heidi Gorovitz Robertson Jan 2008

Seeking A Seat At The Table: Has Law Left Environmental Ethics Behind, As It Embraces Bioethics?,, Heidi Gorovitz Robertson

Law Faculty Articles and Essays

Bioethics evolved from theoretical philosophy into an applied field. Decision makers in health and medical sciences involve bioethicists in decisions and policy making. Although people study environmental ethics, mainly in philosophy programs, environmental ethicists are not involved in decision making. I explore the development of bioethics and environmental ethics, primarily considering the role of law in their development. I ask whether laws and legal opinions encouraging the use of bioethicists in decision making promoted the development of applied bioethics, and correspondingly, whether the absence of laws and opinions promoting environmental ethicists retarded the development of applied environmental ethics. Finally, I …
