The Blood Of Going Green: Using Environmental Initiatives To Account For The Human Rights Violations Of The Green Movement, Noushin Ketabi
Fordham International Law Journal
Part I of this Note first illustrates the science of climate change and the push for biofuel development. Next, this Note uses human rights to define the problems associated with biofuel development in Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay, and introduces the environmental law framework that can address these human rights violation. Part II details the main human rights violations in Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay occurring at the hands of the soy industry, and surveys the main existing certification proposals that attempt to mitigate social and environmental abuses. Finally, Part III proposes ways that developed countries can collectively mitigate the negative human …

An Examination Of The Relationships Between The Peptide Hormone Ghrelin And Appetite, Plasma Biomarkers Of Satiety And Metabolic Response In Humans, Daniel Lee Kresge
Open Access Dissertations
The peripherally circulating peptide hormone ghrelin is purported to stimulate hunger and feeding in humans, and is affected by the energy storage state as reflected in body mass index and body composition, and by macronutrient content of the diet. There have been few studies in humans that have measured both ghrelin, in its various isoforms, and appetite. To address this, Manuscript #1 of this dissertation examined fasting and postprandial ghrelin and ratings of appetite, in addition to anthropometric and fitness measures in 50 college-age student. There were no significant correlations between fasting or postprandial ghrelin and appetite or anthropometric measures …

Unavailable And Unaccountable: A Free Ride For Foreign Manufacturers Of Defective Consumer Goods, Andrew F. Popper
Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals
In the last six months millions of foreign manufactured goods sold in the United States have been found to be defective, dangerous, and deadly. This requires consideration of both the jurisdictional issues involved in holding non-U.S. entities liable and an assessment of why these products made their way into the U.S. market. Part of the blames lies directly with so-called tort reform. Tort reform has suppressed vital market pressure and limited the corrective force of our civil justice system. With limited or no punitive damages, with no joint and several liability, with future litigation risk minimized, what else would one …

Impact Of Solar Ultraviolet-B On The Proteome In Soybean Lines Differing In Flavonoid Contents, Chenping Xu, Joe H. Sullivan, Wesley M. Garrett, Thomas J. Caperna, Savithiry Natarajan
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (2-D PAGE) was used to systematically investigate the impact of solar ultraviolet- B (UV-B) radiation on the soybean leaf proteome. In order to investigate the protective role of flavonoids against UV-B, two isolines of the Clark cultivar (the standard line with moderate levels of flavonoids and the magenta line with reduced flavonoids) were grown in the field with or without natural levels of UV-B. The 12-day-old first trifoliates were harvested for proteomic analysis. More than 300 protein spots were reproducibly resolved and detected on each gel. Statistical analysis showed that 67 protein spots were significantly (P < 0.05) affected by solar UV-B. Many more spots were altered by UV-B in the magenta line than in the standard line. Another 12 protein spots were not altered by UV-B but showed significantly (P < 0.05) different accumulations between the two lines, and for most spots the line-specific differences were also observed under UV-B exclusion. Most of the differentially accumulated spots were identified by mass spectrometry. The proteins were quite diverse, and were involved in metabolism, energy, protein destination/storage, protein synthesis, disease/defense, transcription, and secondary metabolism. The results suggest that high levels of flavonoids lead to a reduction in UV-B sensitivity at the proteomic level.

Posttranslational modification of histones by biotinylation can be catalyzed by both biotinidase (BTD) and holocarboxylase synthetase. Biotinylation of histones is an important epigenetic mechanism to regulate gene expression, DNA repair, and chromatin remodeling. The role of BTD in histone biotinylation is somewhat ambiguous, given that BTD also catalyzes removal of the biotin tag from histones. Here, we sought to develop BTD inhibitors for future studies of the role of BTD in altering chromatin structure. We adopted an existing colorimetric BTD assay for use in a novel 96-well plate format to permit high-throughput screening of potential inhibitors. Biotin analogs were chemically …

Chapter 19. Remediation Of Drinking Water For Rural Populations, W. J. Hunter
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Nitrate is the most common nitrogen contaminant in raw water supplies. In rural areas agricultural activities that involve the use of fertilizers and animal manures are major sources of nitrate contamination. Several processes are currently available that can effectively remove nitrate from raw water. Systems that are suitable for small rural communities include reverse osmosis, ion exchange, and electrodialysis. However, all of these systems move nitrate from raw water and concentrate it in a reject water or brine. Disposal of the reject water can be a major expense as well as an environmental issue. Several emerging systems are under development …

A Public At Risk: Personal Fitness Trainers Without A Standard Of Care, Margaret E. Ciccolella, J. Mark Van Ness, Tommy Boone
College of the Pacific Faculty Articles
In 2002, an overweight, sedentary, and middle-aged man suffered a heart attack during his first workout with his “certified” personal trainer. During the workout, the man repeatedly asked to stop because he was experiencing fatigue, heat, thirst, breathlessness, and chest pain. The trainer responded to requests to stop and complaints of fatigue by questioning his client’s masculinity and by continuing the workout. In the lawsuit that followed (Rostai v. Neste Enterprises, 2006), the court did not have the option to consider a statutorily defined standard of care since no licensing requirements existed for those who design and/or lead fitness programs. …

Auditing And Assessing Air Quality In Concentrated Feeding Operations, N. A. Cole, R. Todd, B. Auvermann, D. B. Parker
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
The potential adverse effects of concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFO) on the environment are a growing concern. The air quality issues of most concern to CAFO vary but generally include ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, particulate matter, volatile organic compounds, greenhouse gases, and odors. Air pollutants may be regulated by federal and state laws or by nuisance complaints. The United States Environmental Protection Agency, and poultry, swine, and dairy industries recently agreed to the National Air Emissions Monitoring System to fund research on atmospheric emissions from production farms in the United States. Air quality regulations may be based on actual emissions, atmospheric …

Map-Based Cloning Of An Anthracnose Resistance Gene In Medicago Truncatula, Shengming Yang
Map-Based Cloning Of An Anthracnose Resistance Gene In Medicago Truncatula, Shengming Yang
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Anthracnose, caused by the fungal pathogen Colletotrichum trifolii, is one of the most destructive diseases of alfalfa worldwide. Cloning and characterization of the host resistance (R) genes against the pathogen will improve our knowledge of molecular mechanisms underlying host resistance and facilitate the development of resistant alfalfa cultivars. However, the intractable genetic system of cultivated alfalfa, owing to its tetrasomic inheritance and outcrossing nature, limits the ability to carry out genetic analysis in alfalfa. Nonetheless, the model legume Medicago truncatula, a close relative of alfalfa, provides a surrogate for cloning the counterparts of many agronomically important genes in …
Mitochondria In Energy-Limited States : Mechanisms That Blunt The Signaling Of Cell Death., Steven Hand, Michael Menze
Mitochondria In Energy-Limited States : Mechanisms That Blunt The Signaling Of Cell Death., Steven Hand, Michael Menze
Faculty and Staff Scholarship
Cellular conditions experienced during energy-limited states – elevated calcium, shifts in cellular adenylate status, compromised mitochondrial membrane potential – are precisely those that trigger, at least in mammals, the mitochondrion to initiate opening of the permeability transition pore, to assemble additional protein release channels, and to release pro-apoptotic factors. These proapototic factors in turn activate initiator and executer caspases. How is activation of mitochondria-based pathways for the signaling of apoptotic and necrotic cell death avoided under conditions of hypoxia, anoxia, diapause, estivation and anhydrobiosis? Functional trade-offs in environmental tolerance may have occurred in parallel with the evolution of diversified pathways …

Regulating Direct-To-Consumer Genetic Testing: Protecting The Consumer Without Quashing A Medical Revolution, Jennifer A. Gniady
Fordham Law Review
This Note examines the existing gaps in regulating genetic tests that are sold directly to consumers and the arguments for and against greater regulation. It advocates adopting an approach that shores up existing regulation of the accuracy of genetic tests under the Food and Drug Administration and Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment, while continuing to promote an open market for selling tests directly to consumers. The Note looks to a variety of additional mechanisms for providing further consumer protections such as incentives for voluntary participation in the Food and Drug Administration approval process, an expanded watchdog role for professional organizations, and …

The Colonial Zoanthid Palythoa Caribaeorum: Population Dynamics On Southeast Florida Reefs, Joanna C. Walczak
HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations
The colonial zoanthid Palythoa caribaeorum (Cnidaria, Zoanthidea) (Duchassaing and Michelotti 1861) is a major benthic component of most Caribbean reefs and is an extremely aggressive spatial competitor (Suchanek and Green 1981). This study looks at annual visits to 16 permanent monitoring sites over 3 reef designations (Inshore Ridge Complex, Middle Reef, and Outer Reef) in Broward County, Florida from 2002-2006. The data obtained in this study fills an informational void regarding the role of zoanthids in the southeast Florida reef benthic community. The study was conducted in two parts. Part One used digital imagery analysis to quantify the spatial cover …

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
Beef knuckles (n = 160) were obtained from source-verified cattle finished on 30% wet distillers grains plus solubles enriched with varying levels of alfalfa hay, corn silage, or corn stalks based on NDF. Our objectives were to determine if roughage inclusion, in conjunction with wet distillers grains plus solubles and cattle location affects beef flavor. Data from this study indicate type and level of roughage inclusion and cattle location have minimal effects on fatty acid profiles and sensory properties of the M. Rectus femoris. However, individual fatty acids of subcutaneous and intramuscular fat were significantly correlated with liver-like off flavor.
