Agreements That Divide: Trips Vs. Cbd And Proposals For Mandatory Disclosure Of Source And Origin Of Genetic Resources In Patent Applications Comment, Jonathan Carr

Florida State University Journal of Transnational Law & Policy

In an attempt to unify the regulation of intellectual property, the TRIPS Agreement sets forth standards for intellectual property law. Recently, however, many countries have become divided on the issue of whether member countries should be required to disclose the source and origin of genetic resources used in patented technologies. Developing countries claim that enforcement of such a requirement would help remedy the global biopiracy problem. This article reviews and assesses the many proposals to amend the TRIPS Agreement as well as the responses from countries, such as the United States, opposing the proposals. Included is a brief discussion about …

Self-Determination Theory: Increasing Motivation In Middle School Students, Mary I. Morrow Jan 2008

Self-Determination Theory: Increasing Motivation In Middle School Students, Mary I. Morrow

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Self-Determination Theory: Increasing Motivation in Middle School Students Research shows that motivation declines when students enter middle school. Because of this, middle school teachers face the difficult challenge of motivating their students to learn. Although intrinsic motivation results in higher conceptual learning, not all activities in a classroom are intrinsically motivated. Self-Determination Theorists propose that through the process of internalization, students' motivation towards extrinsically motivated activities could reach levels in which the behavioral qualities are comparable to those of intrinsic motivation. The internalization process is dependent on environmental supports for autonomy, competence, relatedness, and task relevance. A handbook based on …

Old Acetogens, New Light, Steven L. Daniel, Harold L. Drake, Anita S. Gößner Jan 2008

Old Acetogens, New Light, Steven L. Daniel, Harold L. Drake, Anita S. Gößner

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

Acetogens utilize the acetyl-CoA Wood-Ljungdahl pathway as a terminal electron-accepting, energy-conserving, CO2-fixing process. The decades of research to resolve the enzymology of this pathway (1) preceded studies demonstrating that acetogens not only harbor a novel CO2-fixing pathway, but are also ecologically important, and (2) overshadowed the novel microbiological discoveries of acetogens and acetogenesis. The first acetogen to be isolated, Clostridium aceticum, was reported by Klaas Tammo Wieringa in 1936, but was subsequently lost. The second acetogen to be isolated, Clostridium thermoaceticum, was isolated by Francis Ephraim Fontaine and co-workers in 1942. C. thermoaceticum became the most extensively studied acetogen and …

Cultural Differences In Nutrition In French And Chinese Cuisine, Ellen S. Kim

Capstone Research Projects

Questions about racial and ethnic health disparities are major issues in health psychology and medicine. A previous study on health behaviors showed that there are cross-cultural differences among college students at Southern Adventist University. The previous study examined health behavior variables such as exercise, water, nutrition, sleep, smoking, alcohol, seatbelt use, medical examination, and dental examination. As a follow-up, this study represents phase two of the previous study. In the current study, the focus was on nutrition. Even though nutrition is an important aspect of health behaviors, there has not been significant amount of cross-cultural research done on nutrition in …

The Right To A Dignified Life (Vida Digna): The Integration Of Economic And Social Rights With Civil And Political Rights In The Inter-American Human Rights System, Jo M. Pasqualucci Jan 2008

The Right To A Dignified Life (Vida Digna): The Integration Of Economic And Social Rights With Civil And Political Rights In The Inter-American Human Rights System, Jo M. Pasqualucci

UC Law SF International Law Review

The Inter-American Court of Human Rights recently issued a series of controversial judgments in which it held States accountable for violations of the right to life, even when no one had died. The Court expanded the traditional scope of the right to life to include the right to live a "vida digna" or a dignified life. In doing so, the Court has introduced a qualitative aspect to the right to life. In certain circumstances in which vulnerable individuals or groups lacked basic necessities such as adequate food, water, sanitary facilities, and health care, the Court held that the State was …

Audit Of Antenatal Testing Of Sexually Transmissible Infections And Blood Borne Viruses At Western Australian Hospitals, B. G. Combs, K. S.H. Kwan, C. M. Giele, Donna Mak Jan 2008

Audit Of Antenatal Testing Of Sexually Transmissible Infections And Blood Borne Viruses At Western Australian Hospitals, B. G. Combs, K. S.H. Kwan, C. M. Giele, Donna Mak

Medical Conference Papers

In August 2007, the Western Australian Department of Health (DOH) released updated recommendations for testing of sexually transmissible infections (STI) and blood-borne viruses (BBV) in antenates. Prior to this, the Royal Australian & New Zealand College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists (RANZCOG) antenatal testing recommendations had been accepted practice in most antenatal settings. The RANZCOG recommends that testing for HIV, syphilis, hepatitis B and C be offered at the first antenatal visit. The DOH recommends that in addition, chlamydia testing be offered. We conducted a baseline audit of antenatal STI/BBV testing in women who delivered at selected public hospitals before the …

Cancer Prevention In Primary Care: Predictors Of Patient Counseling Across Four Risk Behaviors Over 24 Months, Judith D. Depue, Michael G. Goldstein, Colleen A. Redding, Wayne F. Velicer, Xiaowu Sun, Joseph L. Fava, Alessandra Kazura, William Rakowski

Cancer Prevention Research Center Faculty Publications

Objective: Rates of preventive counseling remain below national guidelines. We explored physician and patient predictors of preventive counseling across multiple cancer risk behaviors in at-risk primary care patients.

Methods: We surveyed 3557 patients, with at least one of four cancer risk behaviors: smoking, diet, sun exposure, and/or mammography screening, at baseline and 24 months. Patients reported receipt of 4A's (Ask, Advise, Assist, Arrange follow-up); responses were weighted and combined to reflect more thorough counseling (Ask = 1, Advise = 2, Assist = 3, Arrange = 4, score range 0–10) for each target behavior. A series of linear-regression models, controlling for …

Should Physical Education Be A Standard For Public Schools : Are Unhealthy Kids Left Behind?, Abby G. Michelsen Jan 2008

Should Physical Education Be A Standard For Public Schools : Are Unhealthy Kids Left Behind?, Abby G. Michelsen

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Physical education is an important part of elementary school learning because children develop necessary motor skills. These skills encourage learning not only about fitness but also about core ideas inside the classroom. This topic was chosen because physical education should be included in the mandated standards for every grade level. Three themes emerged from the data collected from two face-to-face interviews and eight paper surveys filled out by teachers from Marina School. A lesson plan book was created for second grade teachers to emphasize critical motor skills. To help teachers implement this program, a grant was written to provide the …
