Problem-Based Learning Matters, Illinois Mathematics And Science Academy Jan 2008

Problem-Based Learning Matters, Illinois Mathematics And Science Academy

Teacher Resources

Problem-based learning (PBL) is focused experiential learning organized around the investigation and resolution of messy, real-world problems.

  • PBL engages students as stakeholders immersed in a messy, illstructured, problematic situation.
  • PBL organizes curriculum around this holistic problem, enabling student learning in relevant and connected ways.
  • PBL creates a learning environment in which teachers coach student thinking and guide student inquiry, facilitating learning toward deeper levels of understanding while entering the inquiry as a co-investigator.

Attitudes Toward And Effectiveness Of The Cause-Related Marketing Initiatives In The Polish Culture, Beata A. Kaczkowska Jan 2008

Attitudes Toward And Effectiveness Of The Cause-Related Marketing Initiatives In The Polish Culture, Beata A. Kaczkowska

Open Access Theses

The study examines attitudes toward and effectiveness of cause-related marketing initiatives in Poland. As the results indicate, the factors, which lead to the popularity and effectiveness of the cause-related marketing initiatives in the United States and the United Kingdom, lack in the Polish culture. Even though CRM is popular in Poland, it does not influence the purchase decisions. Poles do not have any expectations toward businesses in the area of corporate social responsibility. They believe that the government should take the responsibility for solving social issues, and value only the functional dimensions of the products, because their emotional needs are …

Unpasteurized Milk And Soft Cheese Outbreaks: An Overview Of Consumer Safety, Taygan Yilmaz Jan 2008

Unpasteurized Milk And Soft Cheese Outbreaks: An Overview Of Consumer Safety, Taygan Yilmaz

Student Theses 2001-2013

Unpasteurized (also called raw or farm-fresh) milk is currently banned in more than half of all U.S. states. There is substantial controversy over whether unpasteurized milk is safe for human consumption. Although less than 1% of the total U.S. population is known to consume these products, proponents of raw milk claim that unpasteurized milk and soft cheeses are more nutritive than pasteurized milk and soft cheeses. However, there have been a multitude of disease outbreaks linked to raw milk and soft cheese consumption, which involved pathogens including Escherichia coli, Salmonella, and Listeria monocytogenes. While some believe an outright ban would …

Management Of Oral Mucositis In Patients With Cancer, Rajesh V. Lalla, Douglas E. Peterson Jan 2008

Management Of Oral Mucositis In Patients With Cancer, Rajesh V. Lalla, Douglas E. Peterson

UCHC Articles - Research

Oral mucositis refers to erythematous and ulcerative lesions of the oral mucosa observed in patients with cancer being treated with chemotherapy, and/or with radiation therapy to fields involving the oral cavity. Lesions of oral mucositis are often very painful and compromise nutrition and oral hygiene as well as increase risk for local and systemic infection. Mucositis can also involve other areas of the alimentary tract; for example, gastrointestinal (GI) mucositis can manifest as diarrhea. Thus, mucositis is a highly significant and sometimes dose-limiting complication of cancer therapy.

Phagocytosis Of Borrelia Burgdorferi, The Lyme Disease Spirochete, Potentiates Innate Immune Activation And Induces Apoptosis In Human Monocytes, Adriana R. Cruz, Meagan W. Moore, Carson J. La Vake, Christian H. Eggers, Juan C. Salazar, Justin D. Radolf Jan 2008

Phagocytosis Of Borrelia Burgdorferi, The Lyme Disease Spirochete, Potentiates Innate Immune Activation And Induces Apoptosis In Human Monocytes, Adriana R. Cruz, Meagan W. Moore, Carson J. La Vake, Christian H. Eggers, Juan C. Salazar, Justin D. Radolf

UCHC Articles - Research

We have previously demonstrated that phagocytosed Borrelia burgdorferi induces activation programs in human peripheral blood mononuclear cells that differ qualitatively and quantitatively from those evoked by equivalent lipoprotein-rich lysates. Here we report that ingested B. burgdorferi induces significantly greater transcription of proinflammatory cytokine genes than do lysates and that live B. burgdorferi, but not B. burgdorferi lysate, is avidly internalized by monocytes, where the bacteria are completely degraded within phagolysosomes. In the course of these experiments, we discovered that live B. burgdorferi also induced a dose-dependent decrease in monocytes but not a decrease in dendritic cells or T cells …

Underage Alcohol Consumption In The United States: Associations With Access Laws, Alcohol Excise Taxes And Enforcement Practices, Matthew J. Cook

UCHC Graduate School Masters Theses 2003 - 2010

This thesis, in fulfillment of the Masters requirements in Public Health, examines underage alcohol consumption in the United States and its association with retail and social access laws, alcohol excise taxes, and enforcement. The study objectives are to assess the availability and quality of consumption and policy data at the state level, describe the number and type of alcohol access policies enacted in the states since 1998, determine whether the number of exemptions placed on alcohol access policies are related to state underage drinking patterns across states, determine if two social access polices ⎯ keg registration and social host criminal …

Undergraduate Scholarship In The College Of Arts And Sciences 2008 Book Of Abstracts, Winthrop University, The College Of Arts And Sciences, Winthrop University

Abstract Books

The College of Arts and Sciences proudly presents Undergraduate Scholarship in the College of Arts and Sciences, our sixth Book of Abstracts that features the scholarship conducted in the college by our students in collaboration with faculty mentors. In the above quote, Ralph Waldo Emerson goes on to say the following: “The wise instructor accomplishes this by opening to his pupils precisely the attractions the study has for himself.” Indeed, the high level of scholarship reflected in this book is a testament to the students’ development as scholars and the effective mentorship provided by the Winthrop faculty as they share …

Boom And Bust On The Great Plains: Déjà Vu All Over Again, Sandra Zellmer

Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications

Two books published in 2006 provide a compelling portrait of the "boom and bust" cycles that have plagued the Great Plains since European settlement. The Worst Hard Time: The Untold Story of Those Who Survived the Great American Dust Bowl and Ogallala Blue: Water and Life on the High Plains stand beside Mark Reisner's classic study of western water resources, Cadillac Desert, and Wallace Stegner's tribute to one of America's greatest conservationists, Crossing the Next Meridian: John Wesley Powell and the Second Opening of the West, as "must read" books for anyone who cares about the future of …

Nadph Oxidase As A Therapeutic Target In Alzheimer's Disease, Michelle L. Block Jan 2008

Nadph Oxidase As A Therapeutic Target In Alzheimer's Disease, Michelle L. Block

Anatomy and Neurobiology Publications

At present, available treatments for Alzheimer's disease (AD) are largely unable to halt disease progression. Microglia, the resident macrophages in the brain, are strongly implicated in the pathology and progressively degenerative nature of AD. Specifically, microglia are activated in response to both β amyloid (Aβ) and neuronal damage, and can become a chronic source of neurotoxic cytokines and reactive oxygen species (ROS). NADPH oxidase is a multi-subunit enzyme complex responsible for the production of both extracellular and intracellular ROS by microglia. Importantly, NADPH oxidase expression is upregulated in AD and is an essential component of microglia-mediated Aβ neurotoxicity. Activation of …
