Head Start Parents' Perceptions Of Parental Involvement During Their Children's Transition To Kindergarten : A Phenomenological Study, Dawn Angela Barberis Jan 2008

Head Start Parents' Perceptions Of Parental Involvement During Their Children's Transition To Kindergarten : A Phenomenological Study, Dawn Angela Barberis

Dissertations and Theses

Schools are recognizing the importance of parent involvement in children's education, but they often struggle to work with families living in poverty whose definition of parent partnership may differ from that of school staff (Lareau, 1987). Parents who live in poverty may feel inferior to school staff due to their lack of economic and educational resources. They may lack the expertise to be able to effectively communicate and work with school staff in making decisions that affect their children. With the increased expectations that schools place on families in supporting their children's education, this mismatch between the resources and experiences …

The Osu1/Qua2/Tsd2-Encoded Putative Methyltransferase Is A Critical Modulator Of Carbon And Nitrogen Nutrient Balance Response In Arabidopsis, Peng Gao, Zeyu Xin, Zhi-Liang Zheng Jan 2008

The Osu1/Qua2/Tsd2-Encoded Putative Methyltransferase Is A Critical Modulator Of Carbon And Nitrogen Nutrient Balance Response In Arabidopsis, Peng Gao, Zeyu Xin, Zhi-Liang Zheng

Publications and Research

The balance between carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) nutrients must be tightly coordinated so that cells can optimize their opportunity for metabolism, growth and development. However, the C and N nutrient balance perception and signaling mechanism remains poorly understood. Here, we report the isolation and characterization of two allelic oversensitive to sugar1 mutants (osu1-1, osu1-2) in Arabidopsis thaliana. Using the cotyledon anthocyanin accumulation and root growth inhibition assays, we show that the osu1 mutants are more sensitive than wild-type to both of the imbalanced C/N conditions, high C/low N and low C/high N. However, under the balanced C/N conditions (low …

Role Of Transient Receptor Potential Canonical-6 (Trpc6) Channel In Metastasis Of Glioblastoma Multiforme, Rajarajeshwari Venkataraman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is one of the extremely fatal brain tumors. The main reason that makes it so lethal is its capability to invade and spread to other parts of CNS producing secondary tumors. Among other factors hypoxia, reduced oxygen availability, is linked to higher metastatic potential of cancers. Hypoxia causes numerous changes in genome and proteome of the cell. These changes help a normal cell to adapt to nutritional deficiency, but the same changes can increase the malignancy and metastasis in tumor cells. Extensive research by a number of curious scientists reveal that various pathways involving numerous proteins cross-talk …

In The Spirit Of Ubuntur. Enforcing The Rights Of Orphans And Vulnerable Children Affected By Hiv/Aids In South Africa, John D. Bessler Jan 2008

In The Spirit Of Ubuntur. Enforcing The Rights Of Orphans And Vulnerable Children Affected By Hiv/Aids In South Africa, John D. Bessler

UC Law SF International Law Review

The author discusses the traditional African concept of ubuntu, which is frequently cited in South African jurisprudence, and analyzes South Africa's violation of the human rights of orphans and vulnerable children affected by HIV/AIDS. South Africa's Constitution explicitly protects children's rights and various socio-economic rights of concern to children. The Constitutional Court of South Africa has held such rights to be justiciable, yet the rights of South African children have continually been violated. The author discusses how the existence of these rights may assist orphans and vulnerable children as well as those advocating on their behalf, and identifies legal strategies …

The Relationship Between Flower And Fruit Abscission And Alternate Bearing Of ‘Hass’ Avocado, Lauren C. Garner, Carol J. Lovatt Jan 2008

The Relationship Between Flower And Fruit Abscission And Alternate Bearing Of ‘Hass’ Avocado, Lauren C. Garner, Carol J. Lovatt

Horticulture and Crop Science

Despite profuse flowering, ‘Hass’ avocado (Persea americana Mill.) yields are low because of excessive flower and fruit abscission. Whether the dynamics of flower and fruit abscission are influenced by or contribute to alternate bearing, the production of a heavy on-crop followed by a light off-crop that is characteristic of many avocado cultivars, remains unresolved. The objective of this research was to determine whether abscission of reproductive structures from ‘Hass’ avocado trees during specific developmental stages, including flowering, fruit development, and fruit maturity, was influenced by crop status of the current or preceding year. Abscised reproductive structures were collected from commercially …

Transtheoretical Model-Based Multiple Behavior Intervention For Weight Management: Effectiveness On A Population Basis, Sara S. Johnson, Andrea L. Paiva, Carol O. Cummins, Janet L. Johnson, Sharon J. Dyment, Julie A. Wright, James O. Prochaska, Janice M. Prochaska, Karen Sherman

Psychology Faculty Publications

Background: The increasing prevalence of overweight and obesity underscores the need for evidence-based, easily disseminable interventions for weight management that can be delivered on a population basis. The Transtheoretical Model (TTM) offers a promising theoretical framework for multiple behavior weight management interventions.

Methods: Overweight or obese adults (BMI 25–39.9; n = 1277) were randomized to no-treatment control or home-based, stage-matched multiple behavior interventions for up to three behaviors related to weight management at 0, 3, 6, and 9 months. All participants were re-assessed at 6, 12, and 24 months.

Results: Significant treatment effects were found for healthy …

Exploration Of Tribal Knowledge Of Entada Pursaetha Dc: An Endangered Gigantic Medicinal Legume In Eastern Ghats, K. Sai Vishnu Priya, Srinivasa Rao

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

The third largest family of flowering plants is the legume family, with more than 18, 000 species. Legumes play an important role in daily human diet, and an array of compounds which can be useful in curing diseases. Tribals utilize many species in their daily lives; most of the uses are still unknown to researchers. Entada pursaetha is a gigantic creeper with giant pods among legumes, and is an endangered species. Many uses for this legume were discovered as a result of the surveys conducted by the authors at five localities in Eastern Ghats. These surveys helped to considerably sharpen …

Changes In Childhood Malnutrition And Mortality After Institution Of A Community Health Worker Program In Four Rural Guatemalan Villages, Steven Hartman, Sarah Leonard, Angelo Tomedi Jan 2008

Changes In Childhood Malnutrition And Mortality After Institution Of A Community Health Worker Program In Four Rural Guatemalan Villages, Steven Hartman, Sarah Leonard, Angelo Tomedi

Undergraduate Medical Student Research

While community health workers (CHWs) are being implemented in several developing countries, there has been little work done to evaluate their effectiveness in reducing childhood malnutrition among participating communities. Our study evaluates the effectiveness of CHWs in three Guatemalan villages by comparing anthropomorphic measures and mortality rates of children under five before and after the implementation of a CHW program. While one community showed no significant change in malnutrition rates in terms of height-for-age calculations, two other communities showed improved malnutrition rates in terms of height-for-age. Weight-for-age comparisons were not statistically significant, and while childhood mortality remained unchanged in one …

Built Environment And Physical Functioning In Hispanic Elders: The Role Of “Eyes On The Street”, Scott C. Brown, Craig A. Mason, Tatiana Perrino, Joanna L. Lombard, Frank Martinez, Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk, Arnold R. Spokane, José Szapocznik

School of Architecture Articles and Papers

Background: Research on neighborhood effects increasingly includes the influences of the built environment on health and social well-being.

Objectives: In this population-based study in a low-socioeconomic-status (SES), Hispanic neighborhood, we examined whether architectural features of the built environment theorized to promote direct observations and interactions (e.g., porches, stoops) predicted Hispanic elders’ social support and psychological and physical functioning.

Methods: We coded built-environment features for all 3,857 lots in the 403-block area of an urban Miami, Florida, community. We then conducted three annual assessments of social support, psychological distress, and physical functioning in a population-based sample of 273 low-SES Hispanic elders …
