Below- And Aboveground Biomass Of Spartina Alterniflora: Response To Nutrient Addition In A Louisiana Salt Marsh, Faith A. Darby, R. Eugene Turner

Faculty Publications

The responses of Spartina alterniflora above- and belowground biomass to various combinations of N, P, and Fe were documented in a 1-year field experiment in a Louisiana salt marsh. Five levels of N additions to 0.25 m2 plots resulted in 18% to 138% more live aboveground biomass compared to the control plots and higher stem densities, but had no effect on the amount of live belowground biomass (roots and rhizomes; R&R). There was no change in the aboveground biomass when P or Fe was added as part of a factorial experiment of +P, +N, and +Fe additions, but there was …

Physical Properties Of Low-Trans Shortenings As Affected By Emulsifiers And Storage Conditions, Silvana Martini, Maria L. Herrera Feb 2008

Physical Properties Of Low-Trans Shortenings As Affected By Emulsifiers And Storage Conditions, Silvana Martini, Maria L. Herrera

Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Sciences Faculty Publications

The quality of shortenings, such as solid fat content (SFC) and texture, strongly depends on temperature fluctuations during storage and handling. The quality of a shortening might be affected not only by temperature fluctuations but also by its chemical composition and the presence of emulsifiers. The objective of this work was to investigate the effect of emulsifier addition and storage conditions on the texture, thermal behavior and SFC of low-trans shortenings formulated with palm oil, palm kernel oil, and vegetable oils such as sunflower and soybean oils. Several conclusions can be drawn from this study: (a) The crystallization behavior of …

The Inflammatory Consequences Of Stress And Adiposity, Cathy A. Bykowski Feb 2008

The Inflammatory Consequences Of Stress And Adiposity, Cathy A. Bykowski

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The inflammatory process is important in protecting the body against the invasion of pathogens, but recent research has suggested that a long-term inflammatory response may lead to chronic diseases (e.g., Black, 2003; Wu, Dorn, Donahue, Sempos, & Trevisan, 2002). Two factors that have been implicated in the inflammatory and disease processes are stress and obesity (Black, 2003). While their individual lines of research continue to grow, few researchers have attempted to integrate these factors into one model to explain their effects on inflammation. This study aimed to replicate previous findings suggesting relationships between stress, obesity and inflammation and test an …

Retinoic Acid Decreases Atf-2 Phosphorylation And Sensitizes Melanoma Cells To Taxol-Mediated Growth Inhibition, Ying Huang, Jennifer Minigh, Sarah Miles, Richard N. Niles Feb 2008

Retinoic Acid Decreases Atf-2 Phosphorylation And Sensitizes Melanoma Cells To Taxol-Mediated Growth Inhibition, Ying Huang, Jennifer Minigh, Sarah Miles, Richard N. Niles

Biochemistry and Microbiology

Cutaneous melanoma is often resistant to chemo- and radiotherapy. This resistance has recently been demonstrated to be due, at least in part, to high activating transcription factor 2 (ATF-2) activity in these tumors. In concordance with these reports, we found that B16 mouse melanoma cells had higher levels of ATF-2 than immortalized, but non-malignant mouse melanocytes. In addition, the melanoma cells had a much higher amount of phosphorylated (active) ATF-2 than the immortalized melanocytes. In the course of determining how retinoic acid (RA) stimulates activating protein-1 (AP-1) activity in B16 melanoma, we discovered that this retinoid decreased the phosphorylation of …
