Managing Arctic Fish Stocks, Michael Distefano
Managing Arctic Fish Stocks, Michael Distefano
PEEL Alumni Scholarship
Humans depend on marine fish stocks for economic and nutritional purposes throughout the world. Consequently, commercial fleets and super-trawlers are nothing new and many countries have found ways to regulate fleet sizes and catch limits within their territorial waters. But something new is happening in the Arctic Circle. As sea ice begins to disappear during summer months, a previously inaccessible fishing ground is emerging, and like all fishing grounds, it will be susceptible to mismanagement and exploitation.
Philosophies Of Imprisonment In Late Antiquity, Mary Olson
Philosophies Of Imprisonment In Late Antiquity, Mary Olson
Constructing the Past
One of the few things that prisons were not used for, in a legal sense, was punishment. However, a multitude of laws outlined the necessity of a quick trial and short jail time. Imprisonment was seen as an inconvenience to all parties involved, and a constant flow, rather than maintaining the status quo, was the way prisons were supposed to work. There existed no sense of the prison as a final destination for the guilty, “no one [was] to be condemned to permanent imprisonment.” Manifesting a distaste for imprisonment in general, Roman law prohibited jail time and simultaneously ascribed the …
Legal Theoretic Inadequacy And Obesity Epidemic Analysis, David Yosifon
Legal Theoretic Inadequacy And Obesity Epidemic Analysis, David Yosifon
Faculty Publications
This Article explores crucial analytic and normative limitations in presently dominant and ascendant approaches to legal theory. The approaches' failure to provide a satisfying framework for analyzing the obesity epidemic presently raging undeterred in American society reveals these limitations. Conventional law and economics scholars writing on the subject have deployed familiar frameworks to reach predictable conclusions that are neither intellectually nor morally justifiable. This Article argues that recent theoretical innovations promulgated within the burgeoning law and behavioralism movement have thus far provided no more reliable a framework for legal analysis of the obesity epidemic than has conventional law and economics. …

Why some invasive plant species transmogrify from weak competitors at home to strong competitors abroad remains one of the most elusive questions in ecology. Some evidence suggests that disproportionately high densities of some invaders are due to the release of biochemicals that are novel, and therefore harmful, to naïve organisms in their new range. So far, such evidence has been restricted to the direct phytotoxic effects of plants on other plants. Here we found that one of North America's most aggressive invaders of undisturbed forest understories, Alliaria petiolata (garlic mustard) and a plant that inhibits mycorrhizal fungal mutualists of North …

Preventing Cardiovascular Disease In Kentucky: Epidemiology, Trends, And Strategies For The Future, Sarah Sartini Rugg, Alison L. Bailey, Steven R. Browning
Internal Medicine Faculty Publications
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in the United States despite dramatic improvements in the treatment of heart disease in recent years. Kentucky leads the nation in the prevalence of several individual risk factors for cardiovascular disease, the prevalence of multiple risk factors, and in cardiovascular mortality. While trends in the prevalence of some of these cardiac risk factors have shown improvement, others have remained unchanged or have worsened. The increased prevalence of obesity and diabetes, especially among young persons, is one of the most worrisome trends. The prevalence of smoking in Kentucky remains high, and has …
"Helping People Find Freedom In Christ" A Journey Toward Fulfilling Christian Ministry In Community, Clifford E. Watt
"Helping People Find Freedom In Christ" A Journey Toward Fulfilling Christian Ministry In Community, Clifford E. Watt
Doctor of Ministry
The purpose of this dissertation is to explore a biblically based set of principles that will empower believers to have freedom in their Christian lives. There is an underlying belief contained in the Bible that it is natural for a believer to do ministry. Jesus said: "You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit-fruit that will last."3 He also reminded us: "I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going …

Comparing Net And Eri Standardized Exam Scores Between Baccaulureate Graduates Who Pass Or Fail The Nclex-Rn, Mary D. Bondmass, Sheniz Moonie, Susan Kowalski
Environmental & Global Health Faculty Research
In the United States, nursing programs are commonly evaluated by their graduates success on the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). The purpose of this paper is to describe a change in NCLEX-RN success rates following the addition of standardized exams throughout our program's curriculum, and to compare these exam scores between graduates who pass NCLEX-RN and those who do not. Our results indicate an 8.5% change (p < 0.000) in the NCLEX-RN pass rate from our previous 5-year mean pass rate, and significant differences in standardized test scores for those who pass the NCLEX-RN compared to those who do not (p < 0.03). We conclude that our selected standardized exam scores are able to significantly identify graduates who are more likely to pass NCLEX-RN than not.
Health Risks And Academic Performance: Implications For College Students, Faculty And Administration, Mary F.D. Larson
Health Risks And Academic Performance: Implications For College Students, Faculty And Administration, Mary F.D. Larson
Theses and Dissertations
In order to enter post-secondary education, a student must have demonstrated the ability to do reasonably well in an academic environment. Yet, many students end up stopping out or even dropping out of college, and oftentimes it is due to academic underachievement. There are many reasons why students do not succeed and one of those reasons is health.
The purpose of this study was to examine relationships between physical health, mental health, stressors, sleep, and substance use and abuse variables and academic performance in a sample of 503 students from a small private liberal arts college in the Midwest. The …

A Comparative Study Of Physician Knowledge, Attitudes, Referral Practices, And Barriers To Use Of Music Therapy And Related Allied Health Professions, Rebecca Elayn Frohardt
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study was to gather information regarding physicians' knowledge, attitudes, referral practices and barriers to use of music therapy in medical settings, as compared with related allied health professions. It is hoped that this knowledge will help music therapists identify opportunities for education and research, leading to the continued expansion of music therapy in health care. Participants were asked to complete a one-time online survey with 20 questions pertaining to basic demographic information, knowledge, attitudes, referral practices, and perceived barriers to use for music therapy and four related allied health professions. Forty-two physicians completed the survey beyond …

The Impact Of Corporate Practices On Health: Implications For Health Policy, Nicholas Freudenberg, Sandro Galea
Publications and Research
Although corporate practices play a substantial role in shaping health and health behavior, public health researchers have rarely systematically studied these practices as a social determinant of health. We consider case studies of three products - trans fat, a food additive and a preservative; Vioxx, a pain killer; and sports utility vehicles - to illustrate the role of corporate policies and practices in the production of health and disease and the implications for health policy. In recent years, public health advocates, researchers, and lawyers have used strategies to reduce the adverse health impact of corporate practices. Systematic analysis of these …

Fat embolism syndrome is a rare complication occurring in 0.5 to 2% of patients following a long bone fracture. It is believed to be caused by the toxic effects of free fatty acids. Diagnosis is clinical, based on respiratory, cerebral and dermal manifestations. Treatment is only supportive, directed mainly at maintaining respiratory functions.

Section of Cardiothoracic Surgery
Chylopericardium is a rare complication of cardiac surgery. It may be caused by a lesion in the thoracic duct or its tributaries or by thrombosis in the confluence of the jugular and left subclavian veins, obstructing the drainage of the thoracic duct. The treatment may be conservative or surgical, depending on the duration and on the volume of the effusion. We report the case of a 1 1/2 year-old male, who, in the late postoperative period of VSD repair, was hospitalized with low-grade fever and breathlessness for one week due to the presence of chylopericardium. The clinical findings and treatment …

Greenhouse Roses For Cutflower Production, Aileen Reid
Greenhouse Roses For Cutflower Production, Aileen Reid
Bulletins 4000 -
Roses can be one of the more profitable flower crops to grow, but also one of the most difficult. Intensive, on-going management is necessary to obtain quality flowers.
The number of rose growers in Western Australia has declined. Many older growers have retired and are not being replaced by newer growers. Increasing competition from imports means that operations need to be highly efficient and it is increasingly difficult for small enterprises to survive. The high capital cost of installing and operating heating for winter production, in combination with cheaper imports from areas with warm winter climates and low labour costs …

Socio-Demographics Of Adult Orthodontic Visits In The United States, Joseph Whitesides, Nicholas M. Pajewski, T. Gerard Bradley, Anthony Iacopino, Christopher Okunseri
School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications
Introduction: Population-based studies in orthodontics have focused on differences between normative and perceived needs. However, information from national data on the prevalence of orthodontic visits and their associated factors in adults in the United States is scarce. We examined the demographic profile of likely adult users of orthodontic services and whether there is racial and ethnic disparity in orthodontic visits. Methods: We analyzed data from the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey, 2000-2004. Results: Overall, about 1% of the population reported an orthodontic visit. Subjects who made a general dental visit during the current year were significantly more likely to also have …
An Exploratory Study Of Farmers' View On Aquaculture Development In Indiana, Kwamena Quagrainie, Steven Hart, Paul Brown
An Exploratory Study Of Farmers' View On Aquaculture Development In Indiana, Kwamena Quagrainie, Steven Hart, Paul Brown
Journal of Extension
The study reported here involved a mail survey of Indiana aquaculture producers to determine the level of Indiana aquaculture and what producers thought were constraints to aquaculture development. Aquaculture is a minor part of Indiana's agricultural economy. Suggested constraints were generally ranked as significant, but the top three constraints were identified as high start-up costs, lack of well-established market for aquaculture products, and high costs of day-to-day operations. Consequently, research and Extension programming has focused on funding aquaculture businesses, analyzing market potential, assessing aquaculture's place in the general seafood industry, and developing value-added aquaculture products.

Creating Quick And Easy Displays For Extension Events, Karen M. Ensle
Journal of Extension
Creating quick and easy displays for Extension can be an effective method for reinforcing and disseminating research-based information to consumers. A display of nine power point slides is an effective way to influence consumers. The slides can be laminated and mounted on foam board or displayed on traditional, fabric-covered display panels. Using computer-generated slides allows easy sharing through e-mail to other professionals. Displays can be prepared easily and inexpensively and are effective in reaching consumers with the newest information on a "hot" or traditional topic.

Quality end of life (EOL) care for the elderly continues to be a challenge, in part due to late referral for palliative and/or hospice services. The purpose of this study was to determine the accuracy of the MDS-CHESS scale (Hirdes, Frijters & Teare, 2003) in predicting 6-month mortality in a stable American nursing home (NH) population. A secondary aim was to determine any differences in mortality between the 2 sites. A sample of 191 residents of two NHs was analyzed in a retrospective, correlational cohort study, using data collected from the federal MDS database. Correlational statistics and logistic regression were …

Cultural Competency In Capital Mitigation, Christopher Seeds, Scharlette Holdman
Cornell Law Faculty Publications
Cultural factors so pervasively influence the interactions of the client with other people - including all of those with whom he comes into contact at significant times in his life (e.g. in educational, medical, and correctional institutions), those surrounding him in the community in which he develops, and, critically, the members of the defense team - that it is imperative for the defense team to have the talents necessary to conduct a mitigation investigation that is culturally competent. The investigation must recognize and surmount an array of barriers, overt and subtle, to obtaining information from people of variegated backgrounds. As …
