Stomata Densities Of Developing And Mature Leaves Of Geraniums, Robert Schletz Apr 2008

Stomata Densities Of Developing And Mature Leaves Of Geraniums, Robert Schletz

ESSAI

Stomata are pores on specialized epidermal cells of plant leaves that facilitate photosynthesis and water transport. This research using geraniums, seeks to determine if stomata densities vary among developing and mature leaves. Epidermal leaf impressions were taken and stomata densities were calculated. Developing leaves were found to average 7.75 ± 0.79 and mature leaves 5.65 ± 0.44. This was found to be statistically significant and is thought to be a result of the maximization of growth potential by developing leaves balanced by a need to regulate water loss by mature leaves.

Artificial Transitive Fatty Acid (Tfa) Ban In Restaurants In Us Cities: Nyc-Doh Tfa Ban As A Model For Proactive Public Health Policy, Vidia S. Ramdeen

Master in Public Administration Theses

Today, restaurants, including all eateries that operate within New York City, as well as restaurants across the country, regularly use a rather large amount of an artery-clogging agent, commonly found within their vital ingredients. Artificial transitive fatty acid, or trans-fat as known to the consumer, is the target of the NYC Board of Health and Mental Hygiene, medical experts, and health conscious consumers, for permanent removal from all NYC restaurant menus by July 2008. Specifically, the NYC health code now requires that all establishments holding a NYC Health Department permit, including all restaurants, caterers, stationary hot and cold vendors, and …

Extending The Security Net The Impact Of Rangeland Insurance On Ranching Economy And Culture, Rex J. Rowley Apr 2008

Extending The Security Net The Impact Of Rangeland Insurance On Ranching Economy And Culture, Rex J. Rowley

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Humans have a complex relationship with the land. At the base of it lies our need for what the land can give: materials for shelter, food and water for sustenance, and scenic beauty for pleasure. But, similar to our interactions with other humans, our relationship with the land is not always perfect. The land can often be our worst enemy. Storm, drought, famine, and pestilence are common words from the historical record representing times when this connection between humans and nature is challenged.

Crop insurance is a relatively recent invention that attempts to level the playing field in our contest …

Porcine Reproductive And Respiratory Syndrome Virus Infects Mature Porcine Dendritic Cells And Up-Regulates Interleukin-10 Production, Lilian Flores-Mendoza, Erika Silva-Campa, Monica Resendiz, Fernando A. Osorio, Jesus Hernandez Apr 2008

Porcine Reproductive And Respiratory Syndrome Virus Infects Mature Porcine Dendritic Cells And Up-Regulates Interleukin-10 Production, Lilian Flores-Mendoza, Erika Silva-Campa, Monica Resendiz, Fernando A. Osorio, Jesus Hernandez

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) infects mature dendritic cells (mDCs) derived from porcine monocytes and matured with lipopolysaccharide. The infection of mDCs induced apoptosis, reduced the expression of CD80/86 and major histocompatibility complex class II molecules, and increased the expression of interleukin-10, thus suggesting that such mDC modulation results in the impairment of T-cell activation.

Grains Of Learning: Learning Objects & Library Instruction, Deborah Diller

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2006

This session will illustrate how new technologies assist instruction librarians in adding variety, interaction, and content into the information literacy curriculum. There will be a lively hour of exploration about a Grain of Learning and putting learning objects to work for students in the classroom setting, a correspondence course, and an online classroom. The classroom settings will focus on a teacher-led large group review, pretest, or small group activity and a learner-driven individual or partner review, pretest, or small group. The correspondence course looks at assignments and activities, and the online classroom includes a pretest, review, or assigned activity. Samples …

Tibetan Medicine: Carving A Niche In The Modern Medical And Scientific Community, Devon Marie Fitzgerald Apr 2008

Tibetan Medicine: Carving A Niche In The Modern Medical And Scientific Community, Devon Marie Fitzgerald

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Tibetan medicine is an ancient tradition, stretching back over one thousand years. Today, the Tibetan medical community, centered at the Men-Tsee-Khang (Tibetan Medical and Astrological Institute) in Dharamsala, India, is trying to bring Tibetan medicine into the modern world. They are doing this mainly by focusing on research, based on modern scientific methods, to produce clinical and laboratory studies demonstrating the efficacy of Tibetan medicine. This paper compiles interviews from Men-Tsee-Khang staff closest to these projects, articles about modernizing traditional medicine from both the Tibetan and Western perspectives, and a review of some of the recent studies to come out …

Rethinking Child Advocacy After Roper V. Simmons: "Kids Are Just Different" And "Kids Are Like Adults" Advocacy Strategies, Elisa Poncz Apr 2008

Rethinking Child Advocacy After Roper V. Simmons: "Kids Are Just Different" And "Kids Are Like Adults" Advocacy Strategies, Elisa Poncz

Cardozo Public Law, Policy & Ethics Journal

The article examines the tension between two competing arguments in juvenile law: "kids are just different" and "kids are like adults." It critiques the binary approach often used in child advocacy and proposes a more nuanced, patchwork strategy that combines both perspectives to better serve the diverse needs of juveniles. The analysis focuses on key legal contexts, including the death penalty, life without parole, and minors' rights in medical decision-making, education, and internet access. The author argues that a balanced approach is essential to address the complexities of juvenile rights and responsibilities.

© 2008 American Registry of Professional Animal Scientists. Eighty-six primiparous or multiparoussows and their pigs were used to evaluatethe effects of changing DCAD in late gestation and in lactation on sow productivity.Sows were allotted to treatment based on parity and their farrowing date. Experiment 1 was a preliminary experiment conducted to determine the level of DCAD that would reduce urinary pH. Twenty sows were used in Exp. 1, and the dietary treatments consisted of a corn-soybean meal diet with 4 levels of DCAD (140, 103, 80, and 56 mEq/kg). These DCAD were achieved by addition of 4 levels of chloride …

Drug Interaction Profile Of Posaconazole, Simon Leung, Mara Poulakos Apr 2008

Drug Interaction Profile Of Posaconazole, Simon Leung, Mara Poulakos

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Adverse drug events resulting from drug-drug interactions may lead to emergency department visits, hospitalizations, prolonged length of stays, increased medical care costs, and death. Despite the efforts of research, clinical studies, and active reporting to identify and explain these drug interaction pathways, clinicians are often unaware of such drug-drug interactions. Therefore, it is imperative for pharmacists to identify these potential drug-drug interactions and notify the clinicians as well as the patients so that appropriate safety measures and monitoring methods are implemented. Specifically, immunocompromised patients often receive multiple drug regimens which are associated with toxicities and are highly susceptible to drug-drug …

Oxygen Diffusion Through Natural Extracellular Matrices: Implications For Estimating "Critical Thickness" Values In Tendon Tissue Engineering, Caroline Androjna, Jorge E. Gatica, Joanne M. Belovich, Kathleen A. Derwin Apr 2008

Oxygen Diffusion Through Natural Extracellular Matrices: Implications For Estimating "Critical Thickness" Values In Tendon Tissue Engineering, Caroline Androjna, Jorge E. Gatica, Joanne M. Belovich, Kathleen A. Derwin

Chemical & Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

Oxygen is necessary for maintaining cell proliferation and viability and extracellular matrix (ECM) production in 3-dimensional tissue engineering. Typically, diffusion is the primary mode for oxygen transport in vitro; thus, ensuring an adequate oxygen supply is essential. In this study, we determined the oxygen diffusion coefficients of 3 natural ECMs that are being investigated as construct scaffolds for tendon tissue engineering: small-intestine submucosa (SIS), human dermis (Alloderm (R)), and canine fascia lata. Diffusion coefficients were determined using a standard diffusion cell system. The ranges for each matrix type were: SIS: 7 x 10(-6) - 2 x 10(-5) cm(2)/s, Alloderm (R): …

Spoiled Brands: Protecting Your Company's Goodwill And Assets From Food Contamination Claims, Zachary S. Finn, Timothy Anderson, Donald Lund

Scholarship and Professional Work - Business

For most people, going to a restaurant ends with a sense of satisfaction and enjoyment, not sickness and the possibility of death. This is also true when purchasing products at a local grocery store. However, recent events have cast doubt on the safety of America’s food supply. The issue facing risk managers is how to reduce these escalating risks and manage any unfortunate outcomes. The cost of food contamination can be devastating to a business financially, and can result in both direct losses related to product recall expenses and indirect losses such as lost reputation and goodwill. By reducing the …

Sex And Globalization, Berta E. Hernández-Truyol

UF Law Faculty Publications

For some time now, I have focused on a mission to bring together the separate discourses of the human rights and trade fields—certainly not to blend them, but to raise awareness of their myriad interconnections. Indeed, human rights and trade are interlocking pieces of the puzzle we call international law and cannot possibly remain sequestered in the "splendid isolation" in which they have existed since their inception as disciplines. In any study of globalization, especially if one endeavors to pursue its benefits for all persons, not just the elite around the world, one must be aware of and seek to …
