A Longitudinal Examination Of The Influences Of Family Processes And Demographic Variables On Adolescent Weight, Jessica Lee Price Apr 2008

A Longitudinal Examination Of The Influences Of Family Processes And Demographic Variables On Adolescent Weight, Jessica Lee Price

Theses and Dissertations

Nationally representative studies estimate that almost one in five adolescents in the United States is overweight. This is a major concern for individuals' physical and psychological health and the overall economy in terms of health care costs and loss of productivity. The approach of this study was to understand adolescent overweight as influenced by family processes including: parent-adolescent relationship, monitoring or parental knowledge, control, family meals, and parenting styles. Race, sex, family structure, income, and mother Body Mass Index (BMI) were also included. A sub-sample of 4,688 adolescents from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1997 was used to address …

Local Bacteriological Survey: Isolation And Characterization Of Bacteria In Two Lynchburg Parks, Rachel S. Hassenpflug Apr 2008

Local Bacteriological Survey: Isolation And Characterization Of Bacteria In Two Lynchburg Parks, Rachel S. Hassenpflug

Senior Honors Theses

Water samples were collected from the bodies of water at Peaks View Park and Percival’s Isle Park in Lynchburg, Virginia in two separate trials per collection site. The samples were filtered to isolate bacteria present in the water. The filters were placed on Trypticase Soy Agar (TSA) and Eosin Methylene Blue (EMB) plates and incubated to obtain colony counts of the bacteria. Subsequently, distinct colonies were selected from the filtration plates and streaked for isolation. Isolates were subjected to a variety of analytical methods and thereby identified by genus and species. Fifteen different species were identified from twenty-three different samples. …

Shaping Future Generations, Lynnea D. Strathdee Apr 2008

Shaping Future Generations, Lynnea D. Strathdee

Senior Honors Theses

Due to the extent and variety of research available on the topic of child-targeted advertising, it was determined that an appraisal of the current state of the situation was necessary in order to determine the best course of action. After summarizing the history of children’s advertising and considering the arguments on both sides of the debate – from the children’s advocates and the advertising industry – the previously recommended solutions were evaluated in the paper. Each of these possible solutions were considered, and led to the proposal of a best solution. Supported by research, the best solution advocated a joint …

Implementing Mass Nutrient Balance Procedures On Swine Production Facilities, Richard Koelsch, Alan Sutton Apr 2008

Implementing Mass Nutrient Balance Procedures On Swine Production Facilities, Richard Koelsch, Alan Sutton

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Whole Farm Nutrient Balance (WFNB) approaches have been used to provide a measure of environmental performance (Aarts et al., 1992; Lanyon and Beegle, 1993; Klausner, 1995). Whole farm balance concepts are used as part of the Netherlands Mineral Accounting System public policy that includes compulsory mineral input and output reports from livestock farms and levies for excess imbalances (Jongbloed and Lenis, 1998). Procedures for measuring WFNB will be followed in measurements made on commercial swine facilities for 2006 and 2007. The conclusions developed based upon data from 13 for 2006 include:

  • On average, the participating swine producers import 1.5 units …

The Aging Services Network: Accomplishments And Challenges In Serving A Growing Elderly Population, Carol O'Shaughnessy Apr 2008

The Aging Services Network: Accomplishments And Challenges In Serving A Growing Elderly Population, Carol O'Shaughnessy

National Health Policy Forum

In 1965, Congress enacted the Older Americans Act, establishing a federal agency and state agencies to address the social services needs of the aging population. The mission of the Older Americans Act is broad: to help older people maintain maximum independence in their homes and communities and to promote a continuum of care for the vulnerable elderly. In successive amendments, the Act created area agencies on aging and a host of service programs. The “aging services network,” broadly described, refers to the agencies, programs, and activities that are sponsored by the Older Americans Act. The Act’s funding for services is …

Crystal Engineering Of Flavonoids, Padmini Kavuru Apr 2008

Crystal Engineering Of Flavonoids, Padmini Kavuru

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Crystal engineering is attracting attention in the pharmaceutical industry because the design of new crystal form of drugs can improve their stability, bioavailability and other relevant physical characteristic properties. Therefore, crystal engineering of nutraceuticals such as flavonoids by exploring their hydrogen bonding interactions can generate novel compounds such as pharmaceutical cocrystals. Flavonoids are polyphenolic secondary plant metabolites that are present in varying levels in fruits, vegetables and beverages. The "French paradox", low cardiovascular mortality rate in spite of high intake of saturated fat among the Mediterranean populations made flavonoids an appropriate target for therapeutic researchers.

The work herein deals with …

Surrogate Markers Of Success In The Bariatric Surgery Population, Alain Ramirez Apr 2008

Surrogate Markers Of Success In The Bariatric Surgery Population, Alain Ramirez

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the associations between pre-operative weight loss, weight loss programs, and clinic attendance relative to the success of gastric bypass in class II and III obese patients. Background: The increasing number of obese children and adults in the United States poses an extensive social problem in the era of managed care. Notwithstanding the stigmatization associated with obesity, the considerable health implications along with the financial burden it imposes create a formidable adversary. Surgical procedures have proved to be superior to conservative and pharmacotherapeutic interventions in the morbidly obese. Despite the overall success …
