Electronically Manufactured Law, Katrina Fischer Kuh Oct 2008

Electronically Manufactured Law, Katrina Fischer Kuh

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

This Article seeks to strengthen the case for the academy and the legal profession to pay heed to the consequences of the shift to electronic research, primarily by employing cognitive psychology to guide predictions about the impacts of the shift and, thereby, address a perceived credibility gap. This credibility gap arises from the difficulty and imprecision in postulating how changes in the research process translate into changes in researcher behavior and research outcomes. Applying principles of cognitive psychology to compare the print and electronic research processes provides an analytical basis for connecting changes in the research process with changes in …

Defense Costs And Insurer Reserves In Medical Malpractice And Other Personal Injury Cases: Evidence From Texas, 1988-2004, Bernard Black, David A. Hyman, Charles Silver, William M. Sage

Faculty Scholarship

We study defense costs for commercially insured personal injury tort claims in Texas over 1988–2004, and insurer reserves for those costs. We rely on detailed case-level data on defense legal fees and expenses, and Texas state bar data on lawyers’ hourly rates. We study medical malpractice (“med mal”) cases in detail, and other types of cases in less detail. Controlling for payouts, real defense costs in med mal cases rise by 4.6 percent per year, roughly doubling over this period. The rate of increase is similar for legal fees and for other expenses. Real hourly rates for personal injury defense …

Improving Student Engagement: Use Of The Interactive Whiteboard As An Instructional Tool To Improve Engagement And Behavior In The Junior High School Classroom, Georgia Lyn Morgan

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This study examined the impact of interactive whiteboard use on student engagement and appropriate at-task behaviors of junior high school students. Two hundred twenty-six students at two public schools in northeast Florida were observed during the second quarter of the school year. Data were collected using an at-task checklist, and students completed an attitude survey regarding their perception of their own engagement and enjoyment with interactive whiteboard use. Significant differences were noted in student behavior between instruction without interactive whiteboard use and instruction with interactive whiteboard use. No significant correlations were found between the variables gender and ethnicity and improved …

Title I Program Models Of Delivery: The Impact Of Paraeducator Instruction On Idaho Fourth Grade Reading Proficiency, Janet S. Byers-Kirsch

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Under federal law No Child Left Behind (NCLB, 2002), each state must annually increase the percentage of students proficient on their achievement tests. They must also have a plan to ensure school districts adequately train and evaluate paraeducators or possibly face losing them as instructional assistants. The study was a descriptive design using quantitative analysis from information gleaned from Idaho’s school district Title I Directors and principals statewide who responded to Qualtrics web-based survey with data about their elementary schools’ models of Title I program service delivery, instructional staff and their training. It examined the relationship between the five most …

Public-Private Partnership In Local Administration: An Exploratory Study Of The City Of Sandy Springs, Manavi Manavi

Dissertations, Theses and Capstone Projects (Full IR Collection)

This research paper is an attempt to understand and analyze the unique nature of the public-private partnership embraced by the City of Sandy Springs, in the Greater Atlanta area, North Georgia. The City of Sandy Springs’s innovative experiments with a different layer of public-private partnership has created immense curiosity among municipalities around the nation for a plausible new governing model that could revolutionize the way local governments function in the future. Hence, this exploratory study makes an effort to bring out the salient features of the governing model of the City of Sandy Springs which would encourage further empirical research …

Help America Vote Act Enforcement, Tiana Butcher Oct 2008

Help America Vote Act Enforcement, Tiana Butcher

Celebrating WCL Student Authors

Although the Help America Vote Act of 2002 (HAVA) features extensive mandates, its enforcement provisions are weaker than those found in previous federal election reform laws, including the Voting Rights Act and the National Voter Registration Act. Activists argue this limited enforcement power is a failing of the Act. Congress may have chosen to adopt weak enforcement mechanisms due to political posturing, lack of funding, faulty technology, or lobbying by the states. Regardless of the reason behind this choice, stronger enforcement mechanisms in HAVA would, paradoxically, fail to encourage election reform or deter election reform altogether.

A Detailed Look At The Omega-K Algorithm For Processing Synthetic Aperture Radar Data, Matthew A. Tolman Oct 2008

A Detailed Look At The Omega-K Algorithm For Processing Synthetic Aperture Radar Data, Matthew A. Tolman

Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, the Omega-k algorithm used for processing stripmap synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data is explored in detail. While the original Omega-k algorithm does not achieve the same SNR as a matched filter, a modification is presented which enables the algorithm to nearly achieve that SNR. It is shown that the focused point spread function obtained when the Omega-k algorithm is used differs in important ways from the output of a modified version of the matched filter. Spread out sidelobes and a stretched mainlobe are observed when the data is processed by the Omega-k algorithm. These differences may increase …

Center for Translational Medicine Faculty Papers

Based on extensive preclinical data, glycogen synthase kinase-3 (GSK-3) has been proposed to be a viable drug target for a wide variety of disease states, ranging from diabetes to bipolar disorder. Since these new drugs, which will be more powerful GSK-3 inhibitors than lithium, may potentially be given to women of childbearing potential, and since it has controversially been suggested that lithium therapy might be linked to congenital cardiac defects, we asked whether GSK-3 family members are required for normal heart development in mice. We report that terminal cardiomyocyte differentiation was substantially blunted in Gsk3b(-/-) embryoid bodies. While GSK-3alpha-deficient mice …

A Project To Foster Spiritual Formation In Online Classrooms, Robert Vaughan Oct 2008

A Project To Foster Spiritual Formation In Online Classrooms, Robert Vaughan

Doctor of Ministry

Online programs are a growing phenomenon in adult education. Many Christian colleges and universities use this method to meet the educational needs of non-traditional students. A drawback of online education is the challenge to address the spiritual needs of students in a virtual environment. This project will propose an approach for fostering spiritual formation in asynchronous, adult online educational programs.

Section 2 will demonstrate the problem of fostering spiritual formation in online environments including the following issues: the demographics of the project, an organizational analysis of the project, and historical timelines of online adult education.

Section 3 will explore how …
