Dangerous Discourses And Uncomfortable Silences, Jorge P. Osterling, Shelley D. Wong Oct 2008

Dangerous Discourses And Uncomfortable Silences, Jorge P. Osterling, Shelley D. Wong

Journal of Praxis in Multicultural Education

In this paper, two teacher educators, a Latino man and an Asian American woman, reflect on their experiences in their graduate teacher-education classes after a controversial book talk and lecture about racism in higher education took place at one of the most diverse institutions of higher learning in the United States. Using critical race and dialogic frameworks, they analyze issues of race, power, and White privilege in academia and probe the reasons why, despite efforts to incorporate multicultural training in teacher education programs, discussing race can be an uncomfortable, threatening, and even cathartic experience to participants.

Sport Stereotypes In The 21st Century “Brought To You By” Media Corporations, Jeffrey M. Hawkins

Journal of Praxis in Multicultural Education

Since its formative years sport has had a commercial component to its operation, however, in no previous time period have we seen the type of growth in the current commercialization of sport that we have seen in the last two decades. Today, sport is big business and as argued in this paper, big businesses heavily involved in sport are mostly concerned with the preservation of established privileges (gender) and priorities (promotion) such as maintaining hierarchical control and generating profit uncritically and unwillingly inclined to take action upon the world in order to transform.

Senior Honors Theses

Marketing is a part of nearly every aspect of business. Without marketing, businesses would have very little means of communication. It is an essential part of promotion and growth. ' This thesis will illustrate important steps in developing a communications plan for the marketing of local church. Rethinking The Digital Remix: Mashups And The Metaphysics Of Sound Recording, David J. Gunkel Oct 2008

Rethinking The Digital Remix: Mashups And The Metaphysics Of Sound Recording, David J. Gunkel

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

Critical evaluations of audio mash-ups and remixes tend to congregate around two poles. On the one hand, these often clever recombinations of recorded music are celebrated as innovative and creative interventions in the material of bland commodity culture. On the other hand, they are often reviled as derivative, inauthentic, and illegal because they do nothing more than appropriate and reconfigure the intellectual property of others. This essay does not side with either position but identifies and critiques the common understanding and fundamental assumptions that make these two, opposed positions possible in the first place. The investigation of this matter is …

The 10th International Congress on Combustion Byproducts and their Health Effects was held in Ischia, Italy, from June 17-20, 2007. It is sponsored by the US NIEHS, NSF, Coalition for Responsible Waste Incineration (CRWI), and Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI). The congress focused on: the origin, characterization, and health impacts of combustion-generated fine and ultrafine particles; emissions of mercury and dioxins, and the development/application of novel analytical/diagnostic tools. The consensus of the discussion was that particle-associated organics, metals, and persistent free radicals (PFRs) produced by combustion sources are the likely source of the observed health impacts of airborne PM rather …

Effects Of Lline Rate On Vvideo Qos Over Wireless Networks: An Experimental Approach, Stuart Wallace, Mark Davis Oct 2008

Effects Of Lline Rate On Vvideo Qos Over Wireless Networks: An Experimental Approach, Stuart Wallace, Mark Davis

Conference papers

Video streaming over Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANS) is becoming an increasingly popular service. However, end user OoS is highly influenced by many factors. These include the video codec used, the packetization scheme, error concealment and correction techniques, the complexity of the video, propagation losses, and the line rate. In this paper the effect of the line rate on the capacity of the network when streaming multimedia content is analyzed experimentally. It is shown that as the line rate decreases the bandwidth load of the video stream dramatically increases leading to poor QoS at the client side. As automatic line …

Race, Identity, And Professional Responsibility: Why Legal Services Organizations Need African American Staff Attorneys, Shani M. King Oct 2008

Race, Identity, And Professional Responsibility: Why Legal Services Organizations Need African American Staff Attorneys, Shani M. King

UF Law Faculty Publications

Given the fundamental importance of the attorney-client relationship in securing favorable outcomes for clients, legal services organizations that serve large populations of African Americans should employ African American staff attorneys because: (1) African American lawyers and clients share a group identity that makes it more likely that a black attorney will be able to gain a black client's trust; (2) black attorneys communicate more effectively with black clients; and (3) the perception of a judicial system that is unfair and racist is likely to encourage black clients to trust black lawyers more than white lawyers, who are more likely to …

Designing Transparency: The 9/11 Commission And Institutional Form, Mark Fenster Oct 2008

Designing Transparency: The 9/11 Commission And Institutional Form, Mark Fenster

UF Law Faculty Publications

Surpassing the low expectations established by previous investigatory commissions and overcoming the political and legal obstacles created by the Bush administration's opposition to its creation, the 9/11 Commission accomplished what appeared to be the impossible: an authoritative investigation, a widely-read final report, and direct influence on significant legislation. This Article argues that the 9/11 Commission represents an important institutional model for encouraging or forcing the Executive Branch to disclose information about an especially significant and controversial past event or future decision. It suggests that Congress or the President consider establishing such commissions when information held by the Executive Branch can …

The Empty Promise Of Estate Tax Repeal, Grayson M.P. Mccouch Oct 2008

The Empty Promise Of Estate Tax Repeal, Grayson M.P. Mccouch

UF Law Faculty Publications

The terms of the debate over the estate tax have been framed largely by abolitionists who have propounded an antitax message that portrays the estate tax as unambiguously harmful and threatening to ordinary families and small businesses. The attack on the estate tax is linked to a larger agenda of eliminating taxes on capital and capital income and dismantling the progressive elements of the federal tax system. The slogan of estate tax repeal, while effective in mobilizing antitax sentiment, makes no sense as a matter of tax policy because it downplays revenue costs, distributional effects, administrative concerns, and consequences for …

State Government—The Arkansas Freedom Of Information Act—Houston We Have A Problem: A Coach And A Comptroller Illustrate The Repercussions Of Releasing Electronic Information Through The Arkansas Freedom Of Information Act, Alexander Justiss

University of Arkansas at Little Rock Law Review

FOIA provides a necessary oversight by which Arkansans can monitor the actions of those within the government. FOIA ensures that its purpose may not be thwarted by prohibiting the transfer, withdrawal, or destruction of documents in an attempt to prevent their release to the public. The executive, legislative, and judicial branches of the government are subject to the FOIA. FOIA statutorily exempts certain public records that would otherwise be accessible to Arkansans. Additionally, the Arkansas Constitution provides numerous safeguards to protect the privacy rights of individuals.

Issues arise with electronic communication under FOIA so various judicial and Attorney General opinions …
