Health-Care Seeking Behaviors Of Puerto Ricans With Diabetes Mellitus Who Live In South Florida: An Exploratory Study, Laura Gonzalez
Health-Care Seeking Behaviors Of Puerto Ricans With Diabetes Mellitus Who Live In South Florida: An Exploratory Study, Laura Gonzalez
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Latinos are the fastest growing minority population in the United States (U.S.) and have the worst access to health care of any ethnic group. The chronic disease of diabetes is twice as common in adult Latinos as in non-Latino whites, and the risk of death related to diabetes is twofold. Reasons for this disparity have yet to be clearly identified. This study had two purposes: 1) to explore cultural beliefs regarding health-care seeking behaviors in Puerto Ricans with diabetes who live in South Florida; and 2) to examine Puerto Ricans' perceptions about their health-care providers. The cultural phenomena of interest …
A Comparison Of Computer And Traditional Face-To-Face Classroom Orientation For Beginning Critical Care Nurses, Patricia Anzalone
A Comparison Of Computer And Traditional Face-To-Face Classroom Orientation For Beginning Critical Care Nurses, Patricia Anzalone
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Purpose: Education of the novice critical care nurse has traditionally been conducted by critical care educators in face-to-face classes in an orientation or internship. A shortage of qualified educators and growth in electronic modes of course delivery has led organizations to explore electronic learning (e-learning) to provide orientation to critical care nursing concepts. Equivalence of e-learning versus traditional critical care orientation has not been studied. The primary aim of this study was to examine the equivalency of knowledge attainment in the cardiovascular module of the Essentials of Critical Care Orientation (ECCO) e-learning program to traditional face-to-face critical care orientation classes …
Ultrashort Laser Pulse Interaction With Photo-Thermo-Refractive Glass, Leo Siiman
Ultrashort Laser Pulse Interaction With Photo-Thermo-Refractive Glass, Leo Siiman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Photo-thermo-refractive (PTR) glass is an ideal photosensitive material for recording phase volume holograms. It is a homogeneous multi-component silicate glass that demonstrates all the advantages of optical glass: thermal stability, high laser damage threshold, and a wide transparency range. Moreover the ability to record phase patterns (i.e. spatial refractive index variations) into PTR glass has resulted in the fabrication of volume holograms with diffraction efficiency greater than 99%. The conventional method of recording a hologram in PTR glass relies on exposure to continuous-wave ultraviolet laser radiation. In this dissertation the interaction between infrared ultrashort laser pulses and PTR glass is …

Extended Focus Range High Resolution Endoscopic Optical Coherence Tomography, Kye-Sung Lee
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Today, medical imaging is playing an important role in medicine as it provides the techniques and processes used to create images of the human body or parts thereof for clinical purposes (medical procedures seeking to reveal, diagnose or examine disease) or medical science (including the study of normal anatomy and function). Modalities are developing over time to achieve the highest possible resolution, speed of image acquisition, sensitivity, and specificity. In the past decade, advances in optics, fiber, as well as laser technology have enabled the development of noninvasive optical biomedical imaging technology that can also be applied to endoscopy to …
The Effects Of Foreign Aid On Perceptions Of Corruption In Sub-Saharan Africa, Margaret Wilkie
The Effects Of Foreign Aid On Perceptions Of Corruption In Sub-Saharan Africa, Margaret Wilkie
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This paper is a study of the effects of foreign aid on perceptions of political corruption in Sub-Saharan Africa. In keeping with the consensus on foreign aid effectiveness, this study proposed that Sub-Saharan African countries receiving more foreign aid would be more likely to maintain high levels of perceived corruption. Hypotheses were tested using multivariate regression, controlling for a number of factors which have shown to be influential on perceptions of political corruption. Two models were tested, one to show the regression over a period of nine years, and the other to show the relationship between the foreign aid and …
Am I Too Fat To Be A Princess? Examining The Effects Of Popular Children's Media On Preschoolers' Body Image, Sharon Hayes
Am I Too Fat To Be A Princess? Examining The Effects Of Popular Children's Media On Preschoolers' Body Image, Sharon Hayes
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The current study investigated the effects of brief exposure to appearance-related media on female preschoolers' body image. Results indicated that exposure did not affect body dissatisfaction or engagement in appearance-related play behaviors. Surprisingly, participants' self-reported frequency of weight concerns decreased at posttest. In contrast to older populations, it is possible that young children may adopt the persona of attractive characters with whom they identify rather than comparing themselves to the characters. This level of identification temporarily may alleviate weight concerns. This is the first empirical study to provide support for previous findings that suggest media exposure does not affect body …
Gamma Hydroxybutyrate Use Among College Students: Application Of A Memory Model To Explore The Influence Of Outcome Expectancies, Pamela Brown
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Gamma Hydroxybutyrate (GHB) was banned from the consumer market by the Food and Drug Administration in 1991. Despite the ban, use of GHB has continued to contribute to thousands of emergency department visits and numerous fatalities in recent years. Efforts to reduce the use of this drug have had limited impact, which may be the result of using traditional prevention strategies that focus exclusively on educating people about of negative consequences of substance use rather than addressing the factors that motivate use. In an effort to identify motivational factors that could be targeted in future prevention efforts, the present study …
Distributed Team Training: Effective Team Feedback, Kevin Oden
Distributed Team Training: Effective Team Feedback, Kevin Oden
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The United States Army currently uses after action reviews (AARs) to give personnel feedback on their performance. However, due to the growing use of geographically distributed teams, the traditional AAR, with participants and a moderator in the same room, is becoming difficult; therefore, distributed AARs are becoming a necessity. However, distributed AARs have not been thoroughly researched. To determine what type of distributed AARs would best facilitate team training in distributed Army operations, feedback media platforms must be compared. This research compared three types of AARs, which are no AAR, teleconference AAR, and teleconference AAR with visual feedback, to determine …
Game On: The Impact Of Game Features In Computer-Based Training, Renee Derouin-Jessen
Game On: The Impact Of Game Features In Computer-Based Training, Renee Derouin-Jessen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The term "serious games" became popularized in 2002 as a result of an initiative to promote the use of games for education, training, and other purposes. Today, many companies are using games for training and development, often with hefty price tags. For example, the development budget for the U.S. Army recruiting game, "America's Army" was estimated at $7 million. Given their increasing use and high costs, it is important to understand whether game-based learning systems perform as billed. Research suggests that games do not always increase learning outcomes over conventional instruction. However, certain game features (e.g., rules/goals, fantasy, challenge) might …
Experiences, Attitudes And Beliefs About Interpersonal Violence: A Study On Costa Rican Adolescents, Monica Mendez
Experiences, Attitudes And Beliefs About Interpersonal Violence: A Study On Costa Rican Adolescents, Monica Mendez
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Research in Latin America regarding interpersonal violence and adolescents is rare if not nonexistent. In a collaborative effort with the Costa Rican Ministry of Education and the National Institute of Women (INAMU), qualitative data were collected from three high schools and one after-school program from rural and urban locations of the Central Valley. The discussion groups/open-ended questionnaires were done with a total of 154 students ranging from ages 14 to 17 and grade levels 8th to 12th. Information was obtained concerning students' perceptions, definitions and opinions on issues relating to interpersonal violence and gender roles and rules. The results show …

Green Chairs, Fictional Phalluses, Infiltration, And Love On The Rocks: Medical Imaging Artifacts Blown Up, Lynn Koller
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This text outlines and applies a methodology for deciphering problems and producing new information by analyzing the artifacts produced by medical imaging technologies - text and images - using practices gleaned from Surrealists, semiologists, and visual artists, emphasizing its own form as being the product of the apparatuses that produce it and therefore untrustworthy. Its basic assumption is that every text contains the information necessary to solve problems of all sorts, though because of the limitations of this text in both form and authorial intellect, we may only reach a starting point for a solution herein. In this regard, we …
Initial Validation Of Novel Performance-Based Measures: Mental Rotation And Psychomotor Ability, Philip Fatolitis
Initial Validation Of Novel Performance-Based Measures: Mental Rotation And Psychomotor Ability, Philip Fatolitis
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Given the high-risk nature of military flight operations and the significant resources required to train U.S. Naval Aviation personnel, continual improvement is required in the selection process. In addition to general commissioning requirements and aeromedical standards, the U.S. Navy utilizes the Aviation Selection Test Battery (ASTB) to select commissioned aviation students. Although the ASTB has been a good predictor of aviation student performance in training, it was proposed that incremental improvement could be gained with the introduction of novel, computer administered performancebased measures: Block Rotation (BRT) and a Navy-developed Compensatory Tracking task. This work constituted an initial validation of the …
Using Creative Writing Instruction In The Urban High School English Classroom To Promote Writing Skills In Remedial Level Students, Maureen Harrison
Using Creative Writing Instruction In The Urban High School English Classroom To Promote Writing Skills In Remedial Level Students, Maureen Harrison
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
The purpose of this research is to investigate the value of creative writing instruction for increasing the literacy of remedial students in urban High School English classes. Students who are placed in remedial level classes often have preconceived negative feelings concerning their ability to produce academic writing. As I later discuss through the research of Debra Holmes Matthews, John A. Daly and Michael D. Miller, these preconceived notions impact the motivation and educational experience of remedial level students. In my research I will examine the ability of creative writing to motivate struggling student writers and help to improve specific writing …

Patents: Hiding From History, Stephen M. Mcjohn
Patents: Hiding From History, Stephen M. Mcjohn
Suffolk University Law School Faculty Works
This essay considers how patent law doctrine clouds the historical record of technological development. The essay first surveys a recent book that relied heavily on patent records to reexamine acutely the role of intellectual property in economic development, "The Democratization of Invention," by B. Zorina Khan. The essay's second part discusses how patent law today likely distorts patents as primary historical sources. The law encourages an inventor not to accurately disclose her invention and its place in technological development, but rather to submit vague and overbroad invention descriptions and claims. In describing the invention, some case results perversely favor what …

Uniendo Comunidades By Learning Lessons And Mobilizing For Change, Margaret E. Montoya
Faculty Scholarship
Building community, that is, sustaining our connections to family and our ancestry is often hampered by going to law school. Law schools are highly adept at assimilating you into a profession and a worldview that can be at odds with who you were and how you saw the world before you began law school. Unfortunately, in order to fit in, it can seem advantageous to forget tus ralces, your roots. I began by talking about unigndo comunidades as a progressive objective and have been talking about the second part of your conference theme, learning lessons and mobilizing for change, as …
Patent-Mediated Standards In Genetic Testing, Eileen M. Kane
Patent-Mediated Standards In Genetic Testing, Eileen M. Kane
Utah Law Review
Genetic testing can be used to identify disease susceptibility, establish diagnostic status, and design therapeutic regimens in medical care. The opportunities to apply genetic knowledge to medical problems have expanded rapidly in the DNA-based era of molecular genetics. Two legal realities are also shaping the development of the genetic testing field in the U.S. First, there is no FDA premarket review of most commercially available genetic tests. Second, many DNA sequences and genetic testing methods are patented. The intersection of these two realities explains some of the clinical dilemmas that have arisen in genetic testing.

The Politics Of Policing: Ensuring Stakeholder Collaboration In The Federal Reform Of Local Law Enforcement Agencies, Kami Chavis Simmons
The Politics Of Policing: Ensuring Stakeholder Collaboration In The Federal Reform Of Local Law Enforcement Agencies, Kami Chavis Simmons
Faculty Publications
Title 42 U.S. C. § 14141 authorizes the United States Department of Justice ("DOJ") to seek injunctive relief against local law enforcement agencies to eliminate a pattern or practice of unconstitutional conduct by these agencies. Rather than initiate lawsuits to reform these agencies, DOJ's current strategy is to negotiate reforms using a process that involves only DOJ representatives, municipality officials, and police management officials. While there are many benefits of negotiating the reforms, the current process excludes important stakeholders directly impacted by the reforms, including community members, who are the consumers of police services, and the rank-and-file police officers, whom …

Sudoku: A Little Lesson In Oop, Axel-Tobias Schreiner, James Heliotis
Articles
Paying only lip service to the principles of object-oriented programming rarely results in the expected benefits. This paper presents a series of designs for a Sudoku application that will lead introductory students through the allimportant process of trial and error. They will see examples of design analysis, criticism, and improvement. The paper concludes with some general pointers why and how the initial mistakes could have been avoided.
Efficient Mining Of Heterogeneous Star-Structured Data, Manjeet Rege, Qi Yu
Efficient Mining Of Heterogeneous Star-Structured Data, Manjeet Rege, Qi Yu
Articles
Many of the real world clustering problems arising in data mining applications are heterogeneous in nature. Heterogeneous co-clustering involves simultaneous clustering of objects of two or more data types. While pairwise co-clustering of two data types has been well studied in the literature, research on high-order heterogeneous co-clustering is still limited. In this paper, we propose a graph theoretical framework for addressing star- structured co-clustering problems in which a central data type is connected to all the other data types. Partitioning this graph leads to co-clustering of all the data types under the constraints of the star-structure. Although, graph partitioning …
Can Gravitational Collapse Sustain Singularity-Free Trapped Surfaces?, Manasse R. Mbonye, Demos Kazanas
Can Gravitational Collapse Sustain Singularity-Free Trapped Surfaces?, Manasse R. Mbonye, Demos Kazanas
Articles
In singularity generating spacetimes both the out-going and ingoing expansions of null geodesic congruences + and − should become increasingly negative without bound, inside the horizon. This behavior leads to geodetic incompleteness which in turn predicts the existence of a singularity. In this work we inquire on whether, in gravitational collapse, spacetime can sustain singularity-free trapped surfaces, in the sense that such a spacetime remains geodetically complete. As a test case, we consider a well known solution of the Einstien Field Equations which is Schwarzschild-like at large distances and consists of a fluid with a p = − equation of …

Leveraging Multiple Imaging Modalities To Improve Breast Cancer Detection, Diagnosis, And Management, Karl Baum
Articles
ANSYS On Campus article. Breast cancer is the most common malignant disease in women, and the second leading cause of cancer death among American women today [1]. The primary tool for detection and diagnosis of breast cancer is x-ray mammography, but it is hoped that additional information provided by Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) will provide a means to determine if a suspected lesion, seen in mammography, is malignant or not. The procedure may prevent a large number of retrospectively unnecessary breast biopsies, a surgical procedure, which can result in pain, bruising, and scaring, that is …

Front Projection: A Useful Compositing Special Effects Technique, Andrew Davidhazy
Articles
Photographers have devised many different ways to place a subject of choice against some desired and visually interesting and appropriate background without going to the expense of traveling to exotic locations on the world or having at their disposal a large variety of background props. This article describes a novel "traditional" technique especially useful for social photography but also advertising and illustration. Added here in April 2008.

Digital Terrestrial Photogrammetry Project, Andrew Davidhazy
Articles
Photogrammetry is the science of making measurements of subjects. It generally also implies "remote" measurement as in aerial photography. This is a project that describes, demonstrates and puts into practice the principles at work in a terrestrial situation and should not be beyond most high school or college students with an interest in applying photography for technical purposes. Basic trigonometry at work! Added here in April 2008.
Gravitational Wave Recoil Oscillations Of Black Holes: Implications For Unified Models Of Active Galactic Nuclei, Stefanie Komossa, David Merritt
Gravitational Wave Recoil Oscillations Of Black Holes: Implications For Unified Models Of Active Galactic Nuclei, Stefanie Komossa, David Merritt
Articles
We consider the consequences of gravitational wave recoil for unified models of active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Spatial oscillations of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) around the cores of galaxies following gravitational wave (GW) recoil imply that the SMBHs spend a significant fraction of time off-nucleus, at scales beyond that of the molecular obscuring torus. Assuming reasonable distributions of recoil velocities, we compute the off-core timescale of (intrinsically type-2) quasars. We find that roughly one-half of major mergers result in a SMBH being displaced beyond the torus for a time of 107.5 yr or more, comparable to quasar activity timescales. Since major …
