Draft For The Energy Policy Of The Republic Of Haiti, Bureau Des Mines Et De L'Energie Jan 2008

Draft For The Energy Policy Of The Republic Of Haiti, Bureau Des Mines Et De L'Energie

Latin American Energy Dialogue, White Papers and Reports

Due to the fact that Haiti faces several years in a major energy crisis, largely due to the lack of a national energy policy expressing a coherent vision and objectives and clear guidance, this document was made to fill this need. In particular it targets the status of the country's energy independence, the source of energy sources and the distribution of consumption; the level of access to energy resources and delivery standards; conservation actions and control of environmental effects; and the incentives to stimulate the energy market. It also promotes research and development operations of renewable energy resources available in …

Student Approaches To Learning In Aviation Contexts, Mary Niemczyk Jan 2008

Student Approaches To Learning In Aviation Contexts, Mary Niemczyk

Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research

Self-regulated learning is an important element of student performance and has been found to be linked with content domains. Aviation courses are complex yet serve as the foundation for student success in the flight environment. Since it is critical that students master the content, it is important to determine how students approach learning in these courses. Participants in this study completed a survey consisting of course-related selected-response questions, and open-ended questions focusing on their study habits. Results of the study portray an interesting insight into the learning strategies used by collegiate aviation students. Analyses appear to indicate that learning techniques …

A History In Limbo: A Human Rights Perspective On Conflict-Ridden Nepal, Claire Mueller Jan 2008

A History In Limbo: A Human Rights Perspective On Conflict-Ridden Nepal, Claire Mueller

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Nepal is at a historical junction, the recent victory of the second People’s Movement garnering a plethora of democratic reforms. Since the end of April, King Gyanendra has reinstated the House of Representatives, which then declared its supremacy and dramatically curtailed the king’s powers. Nepal has been declared a secular state; the Royal Nepal Army has been transformed the Nepali Army; a ceasefire has been created between the army and the Maoists - who are also participating in peace talks; and the seven-party alliance and the Maoists held a summit at which they agreed to frame an interim statute, form …

Persuasive Design Of Destination Websites: An Analysis Of First Impression, Heejun Kim, Daniel R. Fesenmaier Jan 2008

Persuasive Design Of Destination Websites: An Analysis Of First Impression, Heejun Kim, Daniel R. Fesenmaier

Publications and Research

This research examines the persuasiveness of destination websites through an investigation of users’ first impression. To achieve this goal, it builds on research by Fogg (2003) and by Kim and Fesenmaier (2007) to assess the effect of the design factors of destination websites on first impression formation. The results of this study indicate that the subjects were able to make quick judgments on tourism websites, and that inspiration and usability were the primary drivers evoking a favorable first impression. This research concludes by discussing the implications of these findings and possible directions for future study.

An In Vivo Examination Of The Pulmonary Toxicity Of Ultrafine And Fine Carbon Black And Titanium Dioxide: Defining The Role Of Particle Surface Area., Tina Marie Sager

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of this study was to test this hypothesis examining the in vivo effects of ultrafine and fine particles on certain parameters of pulmonary damage and inflammation in the rat model. To do this each treatment group received a dosage based on mass particles. This dosage was then expressed as surface area of the particles (instead of mass) to determine if surface area rather than mass is the more appropriate metric of dose for pulmonary toxicity studies. To assess inflammation, BAL was conducted harvested and PMNs were counted as an indicator of pulmonary inflammation. LDH activity was also measured …

Does Student Passivity Exist? The Impact Of The Student And Instructor On Involvement In And Outside Of The College Classroom., Robert J. Sidelinger

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The classroom is the center of students' formal educational experience. It is often the one place students have an opportunity to interact with faculty. This dissertation explored the issue of student involvement both inside and outside of the college classroom. First, this study qualitatively examined in-class involvement from the students' perspective. Based on students' descriptions of their perceptions of their involvement/noninvolvement, and their perceptions of other students' involvement/noninvolvement, six themes (e.g., Active Involvement) emerged for in-class involvement and eight themes (e.g., Student Passivity) for in-class noninvolvement. Second, this study quantitatively examined factors (i.e., student characteristics, perceived instructor communication strategies, and …

Evaluating An Insurance -Sponsored Weight Management Mprogram Using The Re-Aim Model., Christiaan G. Abildso

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Determining the public health impact of behavioral obesity treatment programs and industries with whom to ally in disseminating successful programs is critical to our nation's health. In a recent report the National Institute for Health Care Management (NIHCM) Foundation (2005) recognized the leverage that health plans might have by establishing incentives for member participation in obesity treatment programs (i.e., weight management). The RE-AIM model (reach, effectiveness, adoption, implementation, maintenance; Glasgow, Vogt, & Boles, 1999) is designed to summarize the public health impact of health promotion programs and assist decision makers in understanding the ability of programs to: (a) reach large …

Comparative Study Between Two Esl Writing Approaches: Computer Processing Microsoft Word Vs. Hand Writing Of Two Freshmen College Saudi Student Groups., Ayed T. Al-Harbi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This comparative study investigated the effectiveness of two writing approaches, hand writing (using paper and pencil) and computer processing (using Microsoft Word), in improving the writing of English freshmen students at two colleges in Saudi Arabia. Three dependent variables: overall writing quality (OWQ), writing apprehension (WA), and attitudes toward writing with computer (ATWC) were measured based on two independent variables: gender and the medium used. The research was designed to assess whether students actually wrote better using word processing software than they did when writing with paper and pencil. One hundred college students studying English were selected from a population …

Fibroblast Growth Factor -19: A Novel Factor That Inhibits Hepatic Fatty Acid Synthesis., Sushant Bhatnagar Jan 2008

Fibroblast Growth Factor -19: A Novel Factor That Inhibits Hepatic Fatty Acid Synthesis., Sushant Bhatnagar

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Previous studies have shown that administration of fibroblast growth factor-19 (FGF-19) reverses diabetes, hepatic steatosis, hyperlipidemia, and adipose accretion in animal models of obesity. To investigate the mechanism for this effect, we determined whether FGF-19 modulated hepatic fatty acid synthesis, a key process controlling glucose tolerance and triacylglycerol accumulation in liver, blood, and adipose tissue. Incubating primary hepatocyte cultures with recombinant FGF-19 suppressed the ability of insulin to stimulate fatty acid synthesis. This effect was associated with a reduction in the expression of lipogenic enzymes. FGF-19 also suppressed the insulin-induced expression of sterol regulatory element-binding protein-1c (SREBP-1c), a key transcriptional …

Diet Formulation And Manufacturing Technique Interactions Affect Pellet Quality And Broiler Growth., Nancy P. Buchanan Jan 2008

Diet Formulation And Manufacturing Technique Interactions Affect Pellet Quality And Broiler Growth., Nancy P. Buchanan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The majority of broilers are fed pelleted diets. Feeding pelleted diets results in an improvement in weight gain and feed conversion compared to feeding mash diets. However, improvements in performance are contingent upon pellet quality. Manipulation of diet formulation and manufacturing technique has been associated with pellet quality changes. However, the interaction between the two factors is rarely explored. The objectives of this series of research were (1) to explore the main effects and interactions that occur when small inclusions of fiber, protein, and moisture are added to a corn-soybean based diets; and (2) to explore the main effects and …

Muted Group Theory And U.S. Politics: Examining Third Parties And Their Supporters., Meredith A. Mitchell Jan 2008

Muted Group Theory And U.S. Politics: Examining Third Parties And Their Supporters., Meredith A. Mitchell

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

With many more young adult voters identifying themselves as independent voters or members of a third party, it is hard to believe third party candidates have not found more significant or lasting success in the U.S. politics. To investigate this phenomenon, Muted Group Theory is presented as one explanation and evidence was sought to determine if third party supporters are a muted group in U.S. politics. Participants included young adult voters from a large Mid-Atlantic university who responded to several statements about third parties and identified their political affiliation. Differences were expected to exist among the different political groups, yet …

Lead-Based Residential Paint In Soils: A Dissolution And A Spatial Analysis Prevention Approach., Sofia Campos Gonzalez Jan 2008

Lead-Based Residential Paint In Soils: A Dissolution And A Spatial Analysis Prevention Approach., Sofia Campos Gonzalez

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

For many years, lead was used to make the white pigment used in residential paints. Although lead paint was finally banned for residential use in 1978, the environmental legacy of contaminated residences and adjacent soils remains. Lead poisoning continues to be a major public health issue. Those at most risk for lead poisoning are children, especially those who 1) live in low quality housing, or those undergoing unsafe restoration or repainting jobs, that were built before 1978, 2) have parents with lead-based hobbies or occupations, and 3) live near lead mining or processing facilities. Other sources of exposure include inner-city …

The Felt Needs Of Adult Learners In Today's College Environment: The Growing Significance Of Non-Traditional Students., Antoinette Hando Jan 2008

The Felt Needs Of Adult Learners In Today's College Environment: The Growing Significance Of Non-Traditional Students., Antoinette Hando

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A survey was used to identify the felt needs of non-traditional students. The first section identified non-traditional students and their overall demographics. In the needs analysis three major factors were found: flexibility of program requirements, time flexibility and the ability to understand the needs of non-traditional students were identified. These correlated with the literature review done on non-traditional learners. The last section dealt with their feelings concerning technology. It also was found to be comparable to the literature review, which talked about demographics, felt needs, and use of technology. Findings indicated that these nontraditional students felt that new technology was …

Gender And Racial Cues During The 2008 Democratic Party's Presidential Candidate Nomination Process: Social Responsibility In The 21St Century., Benjamin Rex Lapoe Ii

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study examined a segment of the 2008 Presidential election, which presents a significant political pinnacle for the United States of America. For the first time in this young democracy’s history, a white woman (Hillary Rodham Clinton) and an African American man (Barack Obama) are frontrunners for the Presidency. However, during this inspiring moment in our nation’s history, one must realize research exists suggesting that agenda setting, framing, and gender or racial cues in the media can influence voters’ opinions of minority candidates. With that in mind, this study examined how race and gender are framed during the Democratic Presidential …

Motivation To Change Parenting In Mothers Of Children With And Without Adhd: Associations With Demographic And Psychological Characteristics., Stephanie M. Wagner Jan 2008

Motivation To Change Parenting In Mothers Of Children With And Without Adhd: Associations With Demographic And Psychological Characteristics., Stephanie M. Wagner

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Motivation to change is considered an important factor in treatment adherence and outcome, yet there is a lack of research on parental motivation to change in the child psychotherapy literature. The current study examined the internal consistency of a measure of parental motivation, the Parent Motivation Inventory (PMI) and investigated associated demographic and psychological characteristics in 61 mothers of children who exhibited varying degrees of inattentive and/or hyperactive/impulsive symptoms. Results demonstrated that the PMI has high internal consistency, can distinguish between mothers of children with and without ADHD, and that an additional 7% of variance in the PMI can be …
