Victimization On Social Networking Sites, Melanie Ann Taylor
Victimization On Social Networking Sites, Melanie Ann Taylor
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine the prevalence of victimization on social networking sites. Current media reports depict social networks as being targets for violence and sexual predators, but limited research on the subject has shown otherwise. A total of 354 students completed a survey regarding harassment, stalking, and sexual assault both online and offline. Koss' (1998) Sexual Experiences Survey was also used to measure sexual assault rates amongst the current sample. Analyses showed that violent victimization rates were low on social networking sites, while verbal harassment, incessant unwanted behaviors, and sexual harassment were all fairly prevalent on …
Bouncing Back After Bullying: The Resiliency Of Female Victims Of Relational Aggression, Laura R. Hammel
Bouncing Back After Bullying: The Resiliency Of Female Victims Of Relational Aggression, Laura R. Hammel
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
Although strides recently have been made to facilitate the understanding of relational aggression and its consequences, one significant limitation has been the lack of research on long-term impact. Through a grounded theory approach, this study examines how resiliency behaviors exhibited by victims of relational aggression during their adolescent years aid in the development of trusting adult friendships.

Ionizing radiation (IR) and radiomimetic drugs used in cancer chemotherapy cause DNA double-strand breaks which are repaired by the nonhomologous end joining (NHEJ) pathway. Ku is a heterodimeric protein comprised of 70 and 80 kDa subunits and recognizes free DNA ends. Once Ku is bound to DNA, it binds to the DNA-dependent protein kinase catalytic subunit (DNA-PKcs), and forms a heterotrimeric DNA-PK complex for repair and damage signaling.
We have analyzed the Ku protein using multiple biochemical techniques and uncovered a novel reversible redox change (Andrews, Lehman and Turchi, (2006) JBC 281(19):13596-603). From this data, we hypothesized that a redox-dependent …

Validation Of A Custom-Made Microarray To Study Human Intestinal Microflora, Harshavardhan Kenche
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
Intestinal microflora refers to all the different species of bacteria that reside in the human gut and is an important organ of the human body because almost all the digestive reactions of the host occur in the intestine. The bacteria of the intestine play a key role in this process by supplementing the intestine with various enzymes and proteins that are required for the digestive process. At the same time, these bacteria were shown to be implicated in a variety of gastrointestinal disorders like Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Inflammatory Bowel Disorder and Gastrointestinal Cancer, but with the current knowledge about the …

Tutoring Is Real: The Benefits Of The Peer Tutor Experience For Future English Educators, Janet Alsup, Tammy S. Conard-Salvo, Scott J. Peters
Purdue Writing Lab/Purdue OWL Publications
In this article, an English education professor, a university writing center administrator, and a recent graduate of an undergraduate English education program discuss the role peer tutoring might play in enhancing the education of preservice teachers of writing. The authors argue that by providing additional, authentic field experiences which reflect constructivist, student-centered philosophies often adhered to in English education programs, university peer tutoring can provide undergraduate students with authentic experience in learning collaboratively, developing rapport with students, and conducting student-centered, one-to-one writing conferences.

An Efficient Network Model For Determining The Effective Thermal Conductivity Of Particulate Thermal Interface Materials, S Kanuparthi, G Subbarayan, Thomas Siegmund, B Sammakia
School of Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications
Particulate composites are commonly used in Microelectronics applications. One example of such materials is Thermal Interface Materials (TIMs) that are used to reduce the contact resistance between the chip and the heat sink. The existing analytical descriptions of thermal transport in particulate systems do not accurately account for the effect of inter-particle interactions, especially in the intermediate volume fractions of 30-80%. Another crucial drawback in the existing analytical as well as the network models is the inability to model size distributions (typically bimodal) of the filler material particles that are obtained as a result of the material manufacturing process. While …

Hartmann Flow With Braginsky Viscosity: A Test Problem For Plasma In The Intracluster Medium, M. Lyutikov
Hartmann Flow With Braginsky Viscosity: A Test Problem For Plasma In The Intracluster Medium, M. Lyutikov
Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
We consider a Hartmann layer, stationary flow of a viscose and resistive fluid between two plates with superimposed transverse magnetic field, in the limit of gyrotropic plasma, when viscosity across the field is strongly suppressed. For zero cross-field viscosity, the problem is not well posed, since viscosity then vanishes on the boundaries and in the middle of the layer, where there is no longitudinal field. An additional arbitrarily small isotropic viscosity allows one to find magnetic field and velocity profiles that are independent of this viscosity floor and different from flows with isotropic viscosity. Velocity sharply rises in a thin …

Microfluidics-based cell assays offer high levels of automation and integration, and allow multiple assays to be run in parallel, based on reduced sample volumes. These characteristics make them attractive for studies associated with drug discovery. Controlled delivery of drug molecules or other exogenous materials into cells is a critical issue that needs to be addressed before microfluidics can serve as a viable platform for drug screening and studies. In this study, we report the application of hydrodynamic focusing for controlled delivery of small molecules into cells immobilized on the substrate of a microfluidic device. We delivered calcein AM which was …

A Bottom-Up Redefinition For Mobility And The Effect Of Poor Tube-Tube Contact On The Performance Of Cnt Nanonet Thin-Film Transistors, N. Pimparkar, M. A. Alam
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Nanonet thin-film transistors (NN-TFTs) based on random or aligned networks of single-wall carbon nanotubes are often regarded as a promising high-performance alternative to amorphous-Si technology for various macroelectronics applications involving sensors and displays. The comparison of NN-TFTs with other competing technologies such as organic, a-Si, and p-Si TFTs, however, has proved difficult as the mobility of these devices (counterintuitively) depends on a host of geometrical parameters such as tube density D, tube length LS, channel length LC, tube-tube contact Cij, etc. In this letter, we redefine the mobility for NN-TFTs by generalizing the classical definition from a bottom-up perspective based …
Simulation Of Thermal Transport In Open-Cell Metal Foams: Effect Of Periodic Unit Cell Structure, S. Krishnan, S V. Garimella, J. Y. Murthy
Simulation Of Thermal Transport In Open-Cell Metal Foams: Effect Of Periodic Unit Cell Structure, S. Krishnan, S V. Garimella, J. Y. Murthy
CTRC Research Publications
Direct simulation of thermal transport in open-cell metal foams is conducted using different periodic unit-cell geometries. The periodic unit-cell structures are constructed by assuming the pore space to be spherical and subtracting the pore space from a unit cube of the metal. Different types of packing arrangement for spheres are considered—body centered cubic, face centered cubic, and the A15 lattice (similar to a Weaire-Phelan unit cell)—which give rise to different foam structures. Effective thermal conductivity, pressure drop, and Nusselt number are computed by imposing periodic boundary conditions for aluminum foams saturated with air or water. The computed values compare well …

Phase Coherence And Superfluid-Insulator Transition In A Disordered Bose-Einstein Condensate, Y. P. Chen, J. Hitchcock, D. Dries, M. Junker, C. Welford, R. G. Hulet
Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
We have studied the effects of a disordered optical potential on the transport and phase coherence of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of Li-7 atoms. At moderate disorder strengths (V-D), we observe inhibited transport and damping of dipole excitations, while in time-of-flight images, random but reproducible interference patterns are observed. In situ images reveal that the appearance of interference is correlated with density modulation, without complete fragmentation. At higher V-D, the interference contrast diminishes as the BEC fragments into multiple pieces with little phase coherence.

Department of Botany and Plant Pathology Faculty Publications
Background: The ascomycete fungus Cercospora zeae-maydis is an aggressive foliar pathogen of maize that causes substantial losses annually throughout the Western Hemisphere. Despite its impact on maize production, little is known about the regulation of pathogenesis in C. zeae-maydis at the molecular level. The objectives of this study were to generate a collection of expressed sequence tags (ESTs) from C. zeae-maydis and evaluate their expression during vegetative, infectious, and reproductive growth. Results: A total of 27,551 ESTs was obtained from five cDNA libraries constructed from vegetative and sporulating cultures of C. zeae-maydis. The ESTs, grouped into 4088 clusters and 531 …

Mitigating Disaster: A Communitarian Response, Robert M. Ackerman
Mitigating Disaster: A Communitarian Response, Robert M. Ackerman
Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution
In this essay, I present a communitarian view as to how we might best respond to disaster, and in particular, to losses suffered by the direct victims of disaster. My focus will be on financial compensation to disaster victims, which admittedly occupies only a small part of the spectrum of disaster response. Emergency "first responder" activities are matters about which I have no expertise; volunteering at my local food bank hardly qualifies me to advise FEMA or the Red Cross. The blunders for which these organizations have recently been responsible are apparent, and so are some of their causes, but …

Six minutes after Swissair First Officer Stefan Loew advised Canadian air traffic control authorities that Swissair Flight 111 had declared an emergency, that electric power had been lost and that the crew was attempting to prepare the cabin for an emergency landing by using flashlights, Swissair Flight 111, an MD-11 aircraft, plunged into the Atlantic Ocean some nine miles off the coast of Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia, resulting in the death of 215 passengers and 14 crewmembers abroad the ill-fated flight.
Reducing Estate And Trust Litigation Through Disclosure, In Terrorem Clauses, Mediation And Arbitration, Jonathan G. Blattmachr
Reducing Estate And Trust Litigation Through Disclosure, In Terrorem Clauses, Mediation And Arbitration, Jonathan G. Blattmachr
Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution
This Article discusses how litigation relating to the administration of estates and trusts might be reduced through by careful planning prior to the property owner's transfer of wealth during lifetime or at death. As the article details, litigation involving trust and estate matters often involves an emotional element not present in most other legally disputed matters. That also suggests that methods to reduce the risk of such litigation occurring may be unique to such matters. In Part 1, certain background matters relating to the climate for such litigation are presented. In Part 2, the historic "tool" of a disinheritance clause …
A Constitutional "Right" To Deny And Promote Genocide? Preempting The Usurpation Of Human Rights Discourse Towards Incitement From A Canadian Perspective, Karen Eltis
Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution
I would like to thank the organizers of the conference, particularly Sheri Rosenberg, for their gracious invitation to speak to what is undoubtedly one of the most pressing themes commanding our attention - genocide and its denial. This is a time when historical truth struggles to endure in the face of insidious attacks at times couched in human rights rhetoric.
