The History Of The Iowa Teen Award, Joni K. Hoing
Graduate Research Papers
The major purpose of this research paper was to document in a written form the history of the Iowa Teen Award (ITA). This purpose was accomplished through interviews and examination of IEMA Archival materials located in the University of Northern Iowa Rod Library Archives Collection. The results of this study showed a dedicated group of school librarians who organized a state-wide plan for a book award chosen by students in grades six through nine. Over a five-year period, plans were made for the award to be similar to the Iowa Children's Choice Award. The study presented the growth and development …

Environmental Influences On Adherence To Self-Management Behaviors And Glycemic Control In African American Patients With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, Brooke L. Barbera
LSU Master's Theses
Diabetes mellitus is a chronic illness effecting approximately 20.8 million individuals in the United States. Minorities are adversely affected, with age-adjusted prevalence 1.7 times higher in African Americans than Caucasians. Type 2 diabetes is significantly affected by behavioral and environmental risk factors, including the presence of co-occurring diseases (i.e., hypertension, hyperlipidemia), obesity, age, and lack of physical activity, and each of these risk factors is more prevalent among African Americans. The treatment of diabetes is largely self-managed, with patients and their families handling 95% of their own care. Adherence to the multi-component diabetic treatment regimen requires daily care, often occurring …

The present study evaluated the in vitro antimicrobial, antioxidant, and antiviral activities of the essential oil and various extracts of Salvia limbata C.A.Mey. and Salvia sclarea L., as well as the content of its essential oil. The activities of essential oils were tested against a wide range of human-, plant-, and food-borne microorganisms. A total of 55 microbial organisms belonging to 35 bacteria and 19 fungi and yeast species were tested using disk diffusion, micro dilution, and micro-well dilution. The essential oils were found to possess antimicrobial activity against some of the tested fungi, while no activity was observed against …
Estimating The Economic Impacts Of Hurricane Damage On Coastal Fishing Infrastructure, Tanza Erlambang
Estimating The Economic Impacts Of Hurricane Damage On Coastal Fishing Infrastructure, Tanza Erlambang
LSU Master's Theses
Two severe Hurricanes, Katrina and Rita, caused devastating damages in the northern Gulf of Mexico during late summer and early fall 2005. Louisiana was the most heavily impacted state, where both storms made initial landfall. The storms caused billions of dollars in damages to public and private infrastructure, with particularly strong impacts to coastal fishing businesses. Numerous assessments of coastal fisheries infrastructure damage were developed by state and federal agencies following the storms. The range of estimates varied greatly (from $275 million to $3.5 billion), because of a wide range of methods and assumptions. This study describes two alternative damage …
Examining The Effects Of Non-Intensive Therapy On Word Retrieval, Speech Intelligibility And Quality Of Life Following Intensive Therapy, Hillary Leigh Goodwin
Examining The Effects Of Non-Intensive Therapy On Word Retrieval, Speech Intelligibility And Quality Of Life Following Intensive Therapy, Hillary Leigh Goodwin
LSU Master's Theses
The purpose of this study was to determine if involvement in intensive treatment would help a patient with aphasia, secondary to a cerebral vascular accident, accompanied by dysarthria, maintain skill levels during non-intensive treatment. A literature review uncovered numerous studies on intensive treatment. These studies discussed the improvements the subjects were able to make across various areas during the time of intensive treatment; however, very little research was available to indicate these subjects’ success when re-entering non-intensive treatment. This study proposed two specific questions: was the subject able to maintain word retrieval, speech intelligibility, and quality of life levels from …
Fabrication Of Micro Bumps For Micro Scale Thermal Management, Ajay Ashok Kardak
Fabrication Of Micro Bumps For Micro Scale Thermal Management, Ajay Ashok Kardak
LSU Master's Theses
Cryopreservation is storage of biological systems at ultra low temperatures for a prolonged duration; such that they can be thawed and restored to the same living state. It is important to understand the behavior of cells when they are subjected to subzero temperatures. Research in this area has shown the occurrence of two main biophysical events; cellular dehydration and intracellular ice formation. Current techniques for characterizing the dehydration in cells as part of a tissue are not adequate for studying intracellular ice formation in tissues. An integrated device consisting of an array of thermal sensors (microthermocouples) and actuators (microthermoelectric coolers) …

Children’S Web Site: History Of Elkader, Iowa… For Kids, Nancy Healy
Graduate Research Papers
Elkader, located in the hills of Northeast Iowa, along the banks of the Turkey River, is a community rich with history. There are no resources designed for children about the history of Elkader. The purpose of this project was to create an engaging informational web site for children that shares information about the history of Elkader, from its beginning years to present day. Research provided throughout this project makes it evident that not only is history education important and that young people are capable of understanding and appreciating the past; it also demonstrates how to best present the information online-with …

Periplasmic Phosphorylation Of Lipid A Is Linked To The Synthesis Of Undecaprenyl Phosphate, Thierry Touzé, An X. Tran, Jessica V. Hankins, Dominique Mengin-Lecreulx, M. Stephen Trent
ETSU Faculty Works
One-third of the lipid A found in the Escherichia coli outer membrane contains an unsubstituted diphosphate unit at position 1 (lipid A 1-diphosphate). We now report an inner membrane enzyme, LpxT (YeiU), which specifically transfers a phosphate group to lipid A, forming the 1-diphosphate species. 32P-labelled lipid A obtained from lpxT mutants do not produce lipid A 1-diphosphate. In vitro assays with Kdo2-[4′- 32P]lipid A as the acceptor shows that LpxT uses undecaprenyl pyrophosphate as the substrate donor. Inhibition of lipid A 1-diphosphate formation in wild-type bacteria was demonstrated by sequestering undecaprenyl pyrophosphate with the cyclic polypeptide antibiotic bacitracin, providing …

Evaluating The Healthy States Initiative Policy Forums, Jessica Harmon
MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects
Since 2005, The Council of State Governments (CSG) has participated in a cooperative agreement funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) called the Healthy States Initiative. The initiative promotes public health by providing information resources to state legislators through publications and public health forums. CSG is interested in information about the impact of the public health forums on state legislators. More specifically, they would like to know if the forums have encouraged the participants to produce public health legislation, to support funding for public health projects, and to work closely with colleagues and various groups to improve …
Biodiversity Of Insects From The Syrphidae And Carabidae Families In Three Ecological Niches (Forest, Forest Boarder, And Farming Area) In Three Communities Of The Coroico Municipality, Nor Yungas, La Paz, Eddy Alarcón
Theses and Dissertations
Today, biodiversity is one of the most studied disciplines because it encompasses all species of plants, animals, and microorganisms that exist and act within an ecosystem. In recent decades, biodiversity has been degrading rapidly due to the simplification of agricultural systems, and the irrational use of pesticides that alter the normal function of ecosystems. Within nature, each insect population is attacked by one or more natural enemies. In this investigation, during a six month period from June to December 2006, the biodiversity of predatory insects from the syrphidae and carabidae families was determined in three ecological niches of three communities …

Mortalités Et Dépopulations Des Colonies D’Abeilles Domestiques : Le Cas Américain, Yves Le Conte, Marion D. Ellis
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

(Excerpt)
The question for participants in the Securities Regulation Section’s program at the 2008 AALS Annual Meeting was whether recent securities regulation reforms hit their mark. I focus in this essay on The Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 (SOX or the Act), the most important legislative reform of securities markets in recent decades. Enacted to assuage public outrage about corporate greed and malfeasance ignited by media reports describing debacles at Enron, WorldCom, Adelphia, Tyco and other companies in 2001 and 2002 (the Corporate Scandals), SOX represented a legislative and political response to public resentment of what some considered a morally impaired …

According to numerous sources, both at the international level and within the USA, legal standards governing the treatment of children (commonly defined as persons under 18 years old)—including their treatment at the hands of the judicial system—should reflect an assessment of "the best interests of the child". An explicit announcement of this principle at the international level appears in the Convention on the Rights of the Child ("CRC"), which nearly all countries in the world have adopted. Article 37 of the CRC elaborates on the "best interests" principle, by prescribing six key standards national juvenile justice systems are to follow …

Strategic Fragility: Infrastructure Protection And National Security In The Information Age, Robert A. Miller, Irving Lachow
Defense Horizons
Modern societies have reached unprecedented levels of prosperity, yet they remain vulnerable to a wide range of possible disruptions. One significant reason for this growing vulnerability is the developed world’s reliance on an array of interlinked, interdependent critical infrastructures that span nations and even continents. The advent of these infrastructures over the past few decades has resulted in a tradeoff: the United States has gained greater productivity and prosperity at the risk of greater exposure to widespread systemic collapse. The trends that have led to this growing strategic fragility show no sign of slowing. As a result, the United States …
