Magnetism And Homogenization Of Microresonators, Robert V. Kohn, Stephen P. Shipman Nov 2008

Magnetism And Homogenization Of Microresonators, Robert V. Kohn, Stephen P. Shipman

Faculty Publications

Arrays of cylindrical metal microresonators embedded in a dielectric matrix were proposed by Pendry et al. [IEEE Trans. Microw. Theory Tech., 47 (1999), pp. 2075.2084] as a means of creating a microscopic structure that exhibits strong bulk magnetic behavior at frequencies not realized in nature. This behavior arises for H-polarized fields in the quasi-static regime, in which the scale of the microstructure is much smaller than the free-space wavelength of the fields. We carry out both formal and rigorous two-scale homogenization analyses, paying special attention to the appropriate method of averaging, which does not involve the usual cell averages. We …

The Role Of P44/42 Activation In Tributyltin-Induced Inhibition Of Human Natural Killer Cells: Effects Of Mek Inhibitors, Abraham B. Abraha, Margaret M. Whalen Nov 2008

The Role Of P44/42 Activation In Tributyltin-Induced Inhibition Of Human Natural Killer Cells: Effects Of Mek Inhibitors, Abraham B. Abraha, Margaret M. Whalen

Chemistry Faculty Research

Destruction of tumor cells is a key function of natural killer (NK) cells. Previous studies have shown that tributyltin (TBT) can significantly reduce the lytic function of the human NK cells with accompanying increases in the phosphorylation (activation) states of the mitogen activated protein kinases (MAPKs), p44/42. The current studies examine the role of p44/42 activation in the TBT-induced reduction of NK-lytic function, by using MAPK kinase (MEK) inhibitors, PD98059 and U0126. A 1 h treatment with PD98059 or U0126 or both decreased the ability of NK cells to lyse K562 tumor cells. PD98059, U0126 or a combination of both …

The Future Of Aesthetics In/And Visual Culture Art Education In 21st Century Art Education, Shannon Reibel Nov 2008

The Future Of Aesthetics In/And Visual Culture Art Education In 21st Century Art Education, Shannon Reibel

Theses and Dissertations

This grounded theory project researches and analyzes publications from 1990-2008 assessing the debate over aesthetics in/and VCAE in 21st century art education. Through a series of visual models, a working theory and its supporting evidence assess this contested subject. Within the context of Modern and Postmodern paradigm conflict, art educators’ debate over aesthetics in/and VCAE fundamentally deals with differing conceptions of identity and freedom. Although commonly sharing the goal of fostering the formation of student identity through the provision and exercise of freedom, art educators’ differing perspectives on identity and freedom result in differing prescriptions for 21st century art education. …

Palina, Sarah, Bronx African American History Project Nov 2008

Palina, Sarah, Bronx African American History Project

Oral Histories

“Sarah Palina” was born in 1983 in Lyon, France. Her father was Algerian, and her mother is half-French and half-Arabic (Berber.)When she was seven years old, her parents divorced, and she moved with her mother and three siblings from a fairly upper-middle class neighborhood to a lower-income section on the outskirts of Lyon. While her father spoke Arabic, Sarah never learned to speak it, as her father’s parents had decided to raise him in a more Westernized fashion. Similarly, both of Sarah’s parents were Muslim, but neither of them practiced the religion. Now Sarah considers herself a practicing Muslim, but …

The Cost Of Myth-Making: Racial Tension And School Desegregation In Memphis, Amy J. Barger Nov 2008

The Cost Of Myth-Making: Racial Tension And School Desegregation In Memphis, Amy J. Barger

Honors Theses

In Memphis, the desire of white parents to keep their children out of integrated schools stemmed partially from their fear of contact with blacks. This push factor may seem obvious; surely misconceptions about race contributed to nearly every instance of white flight in the South. I argue that in Memphis, however, racial tensions caused many whites to harbor an especially acute fear of contact with blacks. By the time of the debates over busing, two traumatic events had lodged themselves in the recent memories of white Memphians: the sanitation strike of 1968 and the Black Monday school boycotts of 1969. …

Culture Learning In Spanish Companion Book Websites: An Analysis Of Tasks, Angela Cresswell Nov 2008

Culture Learning In Spanish Companion Book Websites: An Analysis Of Tasks, Angela Cresswell

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Internet with its World Wide Web feature opened up a whole new frontier for language-culture learning that foreign language textbook authors have integrated into their programs. Designing tasks that progress beyond promoting learners' passive consumerism and reiteration of facts remains a goal and a challenge. Thus, three research questions characterized this study that sought to examine the on-line tasks associated with six current Spanish textbook programs. The design focused on an analysis of these tasks in light of prevailing culture learning concepts and other pedagogical paradigms posited by reputable foreign language educators to determine if they filled the gap …
