Spectroscopy Is Applied Quantum Mechanics. Part 2: The Quantum Revolution, David W. Ball Jan 2008

Spectroscopy Is Applied Quantum Mechanics. Part 2: The Quantum Revolution, David W. Ball

Chemistry Faculty Publications

The article presents several theories relative to the nature of matter. The quantum theory of German theoretical physicist Max Planck proposes that the energy of a vibrating atom was related to its frequency. Albert Einstein's quantum theory of light hypothesizes that light itself had an energy that was directly proportional to its frequency. Danish physicist Niels Bohr develops an equation that could help explain the lines that appeared in the spectrum of the hydrogen atom.

Assuring Quality At The Source With Varying Worker Skills: Economic Justification Of The Online Repair Policy, Dooyoung Shin, Hokey Min Jan 2008

Assuring Quality At The Source With Varying Worker Skills: Economic Justification Of The Online Repair Policy, Dooyoung Shin, Hokey Min

Management Faculty Publications

Traditionally, quality control on an assembly line has been conducted by quality inspectors at the end of the assembly line. Defective or incomplete parts identified during the production cycle are typically transferred to a separate repair shop where such parts are reworked, retested, re-inspected or replaced. In contrast, today’s repetitive manufacturing companies have begun to delegate the power and responsibility of quality inspection and control to assembly workers on the line. This so-called online (line-stop) repair policy has been receiving increased attention from many manufacturing companies. Through a series of computational experiments, this paper examines the effectiveness of the online …

Hybrid Data Envelopment Analysis And Simulation Methodology For Measuring Capacity Utilisation And Throughput Efficiency Of Container Terminals, Hokey Min, Byung-In Park Jan 2008

Hybrid Data Envelopment Analysis And Simulation Methodology For Measuring Capacity Utilisation And Throughput Efficiency Of Container Terminals, Hokey Min, Byung-In Park

Management Faculty Publications

As growth in international trade slowed down in the recent years, inter-modal traffic volume declined and subsequently led to reduction in demand for container services. The reduced demand in container services and the ongoing glut of container port facilities throughout the world have sparked fierce competition among international container terminals. In an effort to help the port authorities to develop a winning strategy in the increasingly competitive container market, this paper develops a meaningful set of benchmarks that will set the standard for best practices. In particular, we propose a hybrid Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA)/simulation model that is designed to …

Formulas For The Fourier Series Of Orthogonal Polynomials In Terms Of Special Functions, Nataniel Greene Jan 2008

Formulas For The Fourier Series Of Orthogonal Polynomials In Terms Of Special Functions, Nataniel Greene

Publications and Research

An explicit formula for the Fourier coefficient of the Legendre polynomials can be found in the Bateman Manuscript Project. However, formulas for more general classes of orthogonal polynomials do not appear to have been worked out. Here we derive explicit formulas for the Fourier series of Gegenbauer, Jacobi, Laguerre and Hermite polynomials. The methods described here apply in principle to a class of polynomials, including non-orthogonal polynomials.

Eyes On Your Classroom: Collaborating With Others To Improve Your Practice, Jesse Wilcox Jan 2008

Eyes On Your Classroom: Collaborating With Others To Improve Your Practice, Jesse Wilcox

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

How do you know if you are an effective teacher? Many teachers consider their effectiveness only in terms of student feelings toward the teacher and course, or how their students perform. While students' performance and perceptions are important factors to consider, students typically lack the expertise to provide accurate feedback about teaching and learning. What students enjoy and what is best for them are not necessarily one in the same. Furthermore, students' performance is related to, but not solely determined by, what teachers do. High student performance may occur in spite of poor teaching practices, and students may do poorly …

Ant Diversity In Two Southern Minnesota Tallgrass Prairie Restoration Sites, Pamela M. Kittelson, Monica Paulson Priebe, Phillip J. Graeve

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

There is little basic information about ant species richness and abundance in tall grass prairie restorations despite the importance of ants to plant community structure and function. We compared ant abundance and richness, vascular plant cover and richness, and soil compaction at two southern Minnesota grassland restoration sites, a prairie reconstruction and a prairie remnant undergoing rehabilitation. We collected a total of 3,523 ants from 12 different species. Plant species richness ranged from 45 in the prairie reconstruction to 95 in the remnant prairie. We found five more species of ants and significantly higher mean ant species richness per plot …

Staphylococcus Aureus Primase Has Higher Initiation Specificity, Interacts With Single-Stranded Dna Stronger, But Is Less Stimulated By Its Helicase Than Escherichia Coli Primase, Scott A. Koepsell, Marilynn A. Larson, Christopher Frey, Steven H. Hinrichs, Mark A. Griep Jan 2008

Griep

Mark A. Griep Publications

The study of primases from model organisms such as Escherichia coli, phage T7 and phage T4 has demonstrated the essential nature of primase function, which is to generate de novo RNA polymers to prime DNA polymerase. However, little is known about the function of primases from other eubacteria. Their overall low primary sequence homology may result in functional differences. To help understand which primase functions were conserved, primase and its replication partner helicase from the pathogenic Gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus were compared in detail with that of E. coli primase and helicase. The conserved properties were to primer initiation …

Assessing Mathematical Thinking Of Primary School Students, N. Mohd Nor, N. Idris Jan 2008

Assessing Mathematical Thinking Of Primary School Students, N. Mohd Nor, N. Idris

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

The recently reviewed primary school mathematics curriculum in Malaysia expects students to be provided with opportunities to develop their mathematical thinking. The traditional paper-and-pencil achievement tests normally given to students' are insufficient for assessing the true picture of the students' mathematical thinking. To assess students' mathematical thinking, teachers need to use assessment techniques that will collect evidence about the students' mathematical thinking process. This paper presents the result of an assessment of students' mathematical thinking through an item consisting of open ended tasks. The tasks will involve students checking for possibility of more than one solution to a problem.

Model Order Selection Criterion For Monitoring Haemoglobin Status In Dengue Patients Using Arx Model, H.A. Rahim, F. Ibrahim, M.N. Taib

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

This paper describes the development of linear autoregressive with exogenous input (ARX) models to monitor the progression of dengue infection based on hemoglobin status. Three differents ARX model order selection criteria namely Final Prediction Error (FPE), Akaike's Information Criteria (AIC) and Lipschitz number have been evaluated and analyzed. The results showed that Lipschitz number has better accuracy compared to FPE and AIC. Finally based on Lipschitz number, appropriate model orders have been selected to monitor the progression of dengue patients based on hemoglobin status. Further work is to apply this appropriate model orders to nonlinear Autoregressive (NARX) model. © 2008 …

Outlier Labeling Via Circular Boxplot, A.H. Abuzaid, A.G. Hussin, I.B. Mohamed Jan 2008

Outlier Labeling Via Circular Boxplot, A.H. Abuzaid, A.G. Hussin, I.B. Mohamed

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

Boxplot is a simple and flexible graphical tool that has been widely used in exploratory data analysis. Its main application is to identify extreme values and outliers in linear univariate data sets. However, the standard boxplot for linear data set is not suitable to be used for circular data sets due to the bounded property of circular variables. In this paper, we propose and develop a boxplot for circular data sets based on five circular summary statistics which is called circular boxplot. In the process, several problems have been resolved. Firstly, we have overcome the problems of estimating the circular …

Modeling Timed Component-Based Real-Time Systems, Huang-Ming Huang, Christopher Gill Jan 2008

Modeling Timed Component-Based Real-Time Systems, Huang-Ming Huang, Christopher Gill

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Component based middleware helps to facilitate software reuse by separating application-specific concerns into modular components that are shielded from the concerns of other components and from the common concerns addressed by underlying middleware services. In real-time systems, concerns such as invocation rates, execution latencies, deadlines, and concurrency semantics cross-cut multiple component and middleware abstractions. Thus, the verification of these systems must consider features of the application components (e.g., their execution latencies and relative invocation rates) and of the supporting middleware (e.g., concurrency and scheduling) together. However, existing approaches only address a sub-set of the features that must be modeled in …

Scheduling Design And Verification For Open Soft Real-Time Systems, Robert Glaubius, Terry Tidwell, William D. Smart, Christopher Gill Jan 2008

Scheduling Design And Verification For Open Soft Real-Time Systems, Robert Glaubius, Terry Tidwell, William D. Smart, Christopher Gill

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Open soft real-time systems, such as mobile robots, experience unpredictable interactions with their environments and yet must respond both adaptively and with reasonable temporal predictability. New scheduling approaches are needed to address the demands of such systems, in which many of the assumptions made by traditional real-time scheduling theory do not hold. In previous work we established foundations for a scheduling policy design and verification approach for open soft real-time systems, that can use different decision models, e.g., a Markov Decision Process (MDP), to capture the nuances of their scheduling semantics. However, several important refinements to the preliminary techniques developed …

Verification Of Component-Based Distributed Real-Time Systems, Huang-Ming Huang, Christopher Gill Jan 2008

Verification Of Component-Based Distributed Real-Time Systems, Huang-Ming Huang, Christopher Gill

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Component-based software architectures enable reuse by separating application-specific concerns into modular components that are shielded from each other and from common concerns addressed by underlying services. Even so, concerns such as invocation rates, execution latencies, deadlines, and concurrency and scheduling semantics still cross-cut component boundaries in many real-time systems. Verification of these systems therefore must consider how composition of components relates to timing, resource utilization, and other properties. However, existing approaches only address a sub-set of the concerns that must be modeled in component-based distributed real-time systems, and a new more comprehensive approach is thus needed. To address that need, …
