New Mechanism For Nonlocality From String Theory: Uv-Ir Quantum Entanglement And Its Imprints On The Cmb, Gregory Minton '08, Vatche Sahakian

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

Puff field theories (PFT) arise as the decoupling limits of D3 branes in a Melvin universe and exhibit spatially nonlocal dynamics. Unlike other realizations of nonlocality in string theory, PFTs have full SO(3) rotational symmetry. In this work, we analyze the strongly coupled regime of a PFT through gravitational holography. We find a novel mechanism at the heart of the phenomenon of nonlocality: a quantum entanglement of UV and IR dynamics. In the holographic bulk, this translates to an apparent horizon splitting the space into two regions—with the UV completion of the PFT sitting at the horizon. We unravel this …

On June 10–12, 2007, Harvey Mudd College hosted A Conference on the Art of Teaching Mathematics. The conference brought together approximately thirty mathematicians from the Claremont Colleges, Denison, DePauw, Furman, Middlebury, Penn State, Swarthmore, and Vassar to explore the topic of teaching as an art. Assuming there is an element of artistic creativity in teaching mathematics, in what ways does it surface and what should we be doing to develop this creativity?

Judicial Transparency In An Age Of Prediction, Adam M. Samaha Jan 2008

Judicial Transparency In An Age Of Prediction, Adam M. Samaha

Articles

The Empirical Legal Studies (ELS) movement is making strides toward understanding judicial behavior, and ELS models could become the foundation for more accurate prediction of judicial decisions. This essay raises two questions. First, what would an age of predictable judicial behavior look like? Second, would satisfying the informational needs of ELS prediction models also exhaust the demands for 'judicial transparency"? The essay concludes that a state of predictable judicial behavior, if somehow stable, would leave almost no litigation to observe; and that a prediction-oriented information policy would nearly meet the demands of today's transparency advocates. One shortfall involves the intrinsic …

Another Structure Of Knowledge Is Possible: The Social Forum Process And Academia, Sherman Jan 2008

Another Structure Of Knowledge Is Possible: The Social Forum Process And Academia, Sherman

Societies Without Borders

The author highlights how the World Social Forum (WSF), the annual meeting held by members of the anti-globalization or alter-globalization movement, has unexpected consequences for epistemology. He considers the possibilities opened by the emergence of the social forum process for the reconstruction of the structures of knowledge. By structures of knowledge, he means following the disciplinary organization and hegemonic approaches since the late nineteenth century in the social sciences.

Final Comments On Eisenberg's Paper, Brian Greer Jan 2008

Final Comments On Eisenberg's Paper, Brian Greer

The Mathematics Enthusiast

I must begin by expressing appreciation for the spirit in which Ted accepted my comments as intended to be intellectually and not personally provocative. Let me also assure him that I was not at all offended by the paper – it would be more accurate to say that I was stimulated by it to voice some strong disagreements. Beyond the particular aspects on which we have different perspectives, I applaud his decision to raise ethical issues, too often ignored in writing about mathematics education.

Flaws And Idiosyncrasies In Mathematicians: Food For The Classroom, Ted Eisenberg Jan 2008

Flaws And Idiosyncrasies In Mathematicians: Food For The Classroom, Ted Eisenberg

The Mathematics Enthusiast

This paper raises an ethical question: should aspects of a mathematician’s personality, political beliefs, physical handicaps, and the ironies surrounding their life be mentioned parenthetically or otherwise in our lessons? What about the political and social norms of the times in the countries in which they lived? There are no hard and fast guidelines on this other than to use good taste; but what is in good taste to one is often in bad taste to another. At the very least this paper presents tidbits of information and innuendo about mathematicians the reader might not know. But hopefully this paper …

Reflections Upon Teaching A Poorly-Conceived Lesson, Yuichi Handa Jan 2008

Reflections Upon Teaching A Poorly-Conceived Lesson, Yuichi Handa

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Using a “failed” mathematics lesson as a mini-case study, I explore some of the challenges inherent in teaching an inquiry-style mathematics lesson. The ensuing discussion centers around two issues: the preparation and subsequent scaffolding involved in guiding students to desired understandings, along with the tension inherent in “telling” and “not telling” in an inquiry-style pedagogy. I resort to personal reflection, as well as to Wenger’s (1998) theoretical construct of participation and reification in revealing the underlying link between the manner of lesson preparation and consequent engagement of students during the enactment of the lesson.

Locating Suitable Habitats For West Nile Virus-Infected Mosquitoes Through Association Of Environmental Characteristics With Infected Mosquito Locations: A Case Study In Shelby County, Tennessee, Esra Ozdenerol, Elzbieta Bialkowska-Jelinska, Gregory N. Taff Jan 2008

Locating Suitable Habitats For West Nile Virus-Infected Mosquitoes Through Association Of Environmental Characteristics With Infected Mosquito Locations: A Case Study In Shelby County, Tennessee, Esra Ozdenerol, Elzbieta Bialkowska-Jelinska, Gregory N. Taff

School of Geosciences Student Publications

Background: Since its first detection in 2001, West Nile Virus (WNV) poses a significant health risk for residents of Shelby County in Tennessee. This situation forced public health officials to adopt efficient methods for monitoring disease spread and predicting future outbreaks. Analyses that use environmental variables to find suitable habitats for WNV-infected mosquitoes have the potential to support these efforts. Using the Mahalanobis Distance statistic, we identified areas of Shelby County that are ecologically most suitable for sustaining WNV, based on similarity of environmental characteristics to areas where WNV was found. The environmental characteristics in this study were based on …

Mathematical Analysis Of The Transmission Dynamics Of Hiv/Tb Coinfection In The Presence Of Treatment, Oluwaseun Sharomi, Chandra N. Podder, Abba B. Gumel, Baojun Song

This paper addresses the synergistic interaction between HIV and mycobacterium tuberculosis using a deterministic model, which incorporates many of the essential biological and epidemiological features of the two diseases. In the absence of TB infection, the model (IIIV-only model) is shown to have a globally asymptotically stable, disease-free equilibrium whenever the associated reproduction number is less than unity and has a unique endemic equilibrium whenever this number exceeds unity. On the other hand, the model with TB alone (TB-only model) undergoes the phenomenon of backward bifurcation, where the stable disease-free equilibrium co-exists with a stable endemic equilibrium when the associated …

Assessing The Felt Reports Of The 1811-12 New Madrid Earthquakes In The Central United States, Ron Street, John D. Kiefer, Jerry L. Raisor Jan 2008

Assessing The Felt Reports Of The 1811-12 New Madrid Earthquakes In The Central United States, Ron Street, John D. Kiefer, Jerry L. Raisor

Report of Investigations--KGS

The damage and felt reports describing the New Madrid, Mo., earthquakes of 1811-12 need to be assessed in the historical context in which the events occurred. Log cabins in the frontier settlements along the lower Ohio River Valley, for example, were built with a rudimentary form of base isolation, and their response to the earthquakes should not be evaluated in the same way that a modern wood-frame or brick building would be.

Also, inaccuracies have crept into the databases used for estimating the epicenters and magnitudes of the earthquakes. For example, the magnitude of the December 16, 1811, earthquake has …

Melvil Dewey And The Dewey Decimal Classification System, Gina Pauley Jan 2008

Melvil Dewey And The Dewey Decimal Classification System, Gina Pauley

Honors Capstones

Melvil Dewey had a great influence on the way libraries classify books. Much research and planning was involved with his Dewey Decimal Classification System. Most school libraries today still use his classification system. Therefore, students need to gain an understanding of this system in their school careers. Research was conducted on Melvil Dewey, in order to gain more understanding about his life, his classification system, his influences, and his ideas, which are still being used in libraries today. After learning about Melvil Dewey's life and his classification system, it will be easier to teach the concepts to the students. The …

The Integration Of Cost Into Mechanical Engineering Design Curricula, Gary S. Drigel Jan 2008

The Integration Of Cost Into Mechanical Engineering Design Curricula, Gary S. Drigel

International Journal of Applied Management and Technology

The integration of cost into design courses in engineering and engineering technology programs is necessary to provide graduating engineers the skills to become immediate contributors to the goals and profits of their chosen companies. There are many methods that can be used, including sophisticated decision science techniques. One example of a teaching and analysis technique developed for use in strength of materials course is described. In this example, a simple selection model, called a decision matrix, is used to decide what combination of factors provided a cost- effective design. This type of technique will allow teaching professionals to introduce and …

Prabha - A New Heuristic Approach For Machine Cell Formation Under Dynamic Production Environments, A. Muruganandam, G. Prabhakaran, R. V. Murali

International Journal of Applied Management and Technology

Over the past three decades, Cellular Manufacturing Systems (CMS) have attracted a lot of attention from manufacturers because of its positive impacts on analysis of batch-type production and also a wide range of potential application areas. Machine cell formation and part family creation are two important tasks of cellular manufacturing systems. Most of the current CMS design methods have been developed for a static production environment. This paper addresses the problem of machine cell formation and part family formation for a dynamic production requirement with the objective of minimizing the material handling cost, penalty for cell load variation and the …

Quality Improvement In Higher Education Through Normalization Of Student Feedback Data Using Evolutionary Algorithm, S. Vishnupriyan, L. Govindarajan, G. Prabhakaran, K. P. Ramachandran Jan 2008

Quality Improvement In Higher Education Through Normalization Of Student Feedback Data Using Evolutionary Algorithm, S. Vishnupriyan, L. Govindarajan, G. Prabhakaran, K. P. Ramachandran

International Journal of Applied Management and Technology

Student Feedback is a vital information that helps not only to evaluate the existing academic practices but also to rectify the discrepancies if any, enabling continuous quality improvement. Often the educational institutions make decisions on the teaching and delivery strategies and requirements of the students based on the students’ Feedback. Due to various factors like the composition of the class in terms of student background, personal relationship with the teacher and other factors, the Feedback generally remains so scattered that at times it may not be possible to arrive at a conclusion based on the feedback. Any decision, based on …

Precedent, Principle And Pragmatism: Justice Wilson And The Expansion Of Canadian Tort Law, Kate Sutherland Jan 2008

Precedent, Principle And Pragmatism: Justice Wilson And The Expansion Of Canadian Tort Law, Kate Sutherland

The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference

Tort law does not appear to have been a particular area of interest for Bertha Wilson during her years as a law student or in legal practice. But after she was appointed to the bench, some of her best-known judgments both at the Ontario Court of Appeal and at the Supreme Court of Canada were tort decisions (for example, Bhadauria v. Seneca College and Kamloops v. Neilsen), and the y, along with a number of other decisions authored by her, remain staples of the tort law curriculum. Clearly Justice Wilson made an impact on Canadian tort law. This paper focuses …
