Locating Slide Surface And Pre-Slide Topography Using Site Investigation Data, Case Study: Maskun Landslide, Vahid Maazallahi, Ali Saiedi

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The geometric shape of the slide surface and the topography of before and after the failure are the essential factors for analysis of a landslide and for design of remedial works. Since determination of the slide surface profile is difficult and costly using traditional methods and often the pre-slide topography is not accessible, this paper is going to present two techniques to determine these factors. The presented technique to locate 3dimensional geometric shape of the slide surface is based upon determining slide surface in 2dimensional vertical sections. The outcrop and other signs of slide surface are implemented factors for this …

Probabilistic Finite Elements With Dynamic Limit Bounds; A Case Study: 17th Street Flood Wall, New Orleans, Mohammadreza Rajabalinejad, P. H. A. J. M. Van Gelder, J. K. Vrijling

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The probabilistic approach provides a better understanding of failure mechanisms and occurrence probabilities as well as consequences of failure. Besides, main advantages of the probabilistic design in comparison with the deterministic design are: a more careful, more cost effective, and more reliable design of infrastructures. In the present study a new probabilistic approach is applied to the 17th Street Flood Wall, and its probability of failure under hurricane hazard, considering multiple failure mechanisms is assessed. The Monte Carlo (MC) simulation technique coupled with dynamic limit bounds (DLB) integrated with finite element approach is used. The performance of DLB and MC …

Case Study Of Landslide In Nh –13 At Kethikal Near Mangalore – India, K. Arunkumar Bhat, R. Shivashankar, Ramakrishna Yaji

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The disastrous slope failure occurred at the Kethikal hill, in the outskirts of Mangalore city in NH 13, India, during the month of June 1998 soon after the heavy and continuous monsoon rains. Many closely built dwelling houses at the top of hill are damaged and the traffic along the road is also diverted for some duration. Typical stratified slope with three layers is considered for the stability analysis and the general computer program is developed in C language for optimization of factor of safety. The factor of safety is calculated using Janbu’s generalized procedure of slices and Davidon-Fletcher-Powel (DFP) …

History Of Ultimate Limit State Of Bored Piles, Petr Koudelka Aug 2008

History Of Ultimate Limit State Of Bored Piles, Petr Koudelka

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

In European Union, the basic geotechnical code "EUROCODE 7 - Geotechnical design, Part 1 - General rules" (EC7-1) has been finished and its National Annexes have been drafted. The designs according to both EC7-1 and the Czech basic standard ČSN 73 0031 “Structural reliability – Basic requirements for design” are based on the Limit State Design theory. However, there is a principal difference between the inputs according to EC7-1 and the inputs according to ČSN 73 0031. In general, the input difference results in too conservative (ineffective) designs according to EC7-1 and more effective (more optimistic) designs according to ČSN. …

Settlement Analysis Of Axially Loaded Piles, Hoyoung Seo, Monica Prezzi, Rodrigo Salgado Aug 2008

Settlement Analysis Of Axially Loaded Piles, Hoyoung Seo, Monica Prezzi, Rodrigo Salgado

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

In pile design, settlement controls the design in most cases because, by the time a pile has failed in terms of bearing capacity, it is very likely that serviceability will have already been compromised. This notwithstanding, pile foundations are often designed based on the calculations of ultimate resistances reduced by factors of safety. This is in part due to the lack of accessible realistic analyses for estimation of settlement, especially for piles installed in layered soil. This paper presents a new settlement analysis method for axially loaded piles in multilayered soil and analyzes two case histories for which load tests …

The Modeling Of Deformation Process In Soils With Use Of Ansys And Ls-Dyna Programs, G. G. Boldyrev, A. J. Muyzemnek

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

In this paper the results of experimental and numerical researches of sand deformation in the basis of a rigid stamp loaded with central and eccentric loads in conditions of a plane and 3D space problem are shown. The numerical solution of a problem is executed with use of programs ANSYS, LS-DYNA and models of soil Drucker-Prager and Сар. The movement equations solution is executed with use of Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) method that has allowed to solve a problem at large deformations, even for the sandy basis stability loss.

Generating Realistic Ground Motions For Nonlinear Seismic Hazard Analysis — An Application To Hard Rock Sites In Eastern North America, Jale Tezcan

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

This paper aims to determine the dependence of seismic response on the shape of the time-domain filter used in the stochastic method of ground motion prediction. Brune’s single-corner point source model was used in conjunction with the current attenuation relationships developed for hard rock sites in the Eastern North America (ENA) to obtain the target ground motion spectrum. A total of three hundred synthetic accelerograms were generated by filtering the Gaussian white noise with exponential, triangular and trapezoidal windows. For each accelerogram, displacement response of the Duffing’s oscillator was calculated, and its average amplitude spectrum was constructed in the joint …

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Subsidence, mining and site data has been collected over a number of longwall panels in the Illinois Basin. Using this data, empirical correlations are attempted to various subsidence parameters, including maximum vertical and horizontal displacement, subsidence slope and curvature and horizontal strain. Also, the corresponding locations of these various subsidence characteristics are correlated to the associated site conditions. An extensive list of definitions are provided for the various subsidence parameters utilized in the paper.

Optimization Constrained Cad Framework With Iso-Performing Design Generator, Kelly Eric Bowman Aug 2008

Optimization Constrained Cad Framework With Iso-Performing Design Generator, Kelly Eric Bowman

Theses and Dissertations

Design decisions have a large impact early in the design process. Optimization methods can help engineers improve their early decision making, however, design problems are often ill-posed for optimization at this early stage. This thesis develops engineering methods to use optimization during embodiment design, despite these difficulties. One common difficulty in designing mechanical systems is in handling the effects that design changes in one subsystem have on another. This is made more difficult in early engineering design, when design information is preliminary. Increased efforts have been made to use numerical optimization methods in early engineering design – because of the …

Prediction Of Slope Stability Using Artificial Neural Network (Case Study: Noabad, Mazandaran, Iran), Farzad Farrokhzad, Asskar Janalizadeh, Amin Barari Aug 2008

Prediction Of Slope Stability Using Artificial Neural Network (Case Study: Noabad, Mazandaran, Iran), Farzad Farrokhzad, Asskar Janalizadeh, Amin Barari

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The surface of the earth is very rarely flat and so there are slopes nearly everywhere. The loads on slope are due to the self-weight of the soil and to external loads, which may come from foundation at the top and seismic loads. Geotechnical engineers have to pay particular attention to geology, ground water and shear strength of soils in assessing slop stability. Neural networks are very sophisticated modeling techniques, capable of modeling extremely complex functions. In particular, neural networks are non-linear. With respect to the above advantages, in this paper, artificial neural networks are developed to predict slope stability …

Design Prediction And Performance Of Piles For Seismic Loads, Vijay K. Puri, Shamsher Prakash Aug 2008

Design Prediction And Performance Of Piles For Seismic Loads, Vijay K. Puri, Shamsher Prakash

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Pile foundations are regarded as a safe alternative for supporting structures in seismic areas. The performance of piles depends on soil profile, pile and earthquake parameters. The soils may also be prone to liquefaction. In non-liquefying soils the shear modulus degrades with increasing strain or displacements. Material damping increases with increasing strain or displacement. Stiffness of single pile and pile groups are needed for different modes of vibration; e.g., vertical vibrations, horizontal sliding in x or y direction, rotation about x or y axis and torsion. Group action is generally accounted for by including interaction factors. Pile response in any …

Milky Way Mass Models And Mond, Stacy S. Mcgaugh Aug 2008

Milky Way Mass Models And Mond, Stacy S. Mcgaugh

Faculty Scholarship

Using the Tuorla-Heidelberg model for the mass distribution of the Milky Way, I determine the rotation curve predicted by MOND (modified Newtonian dynamics). The result is in good agreement with the observed terminal velocities interior to the solar radius and with estimates of the Galaxy's rotation curve exterior thereto. There are no fit parameters: given the mass distribution, MOND provides a good match to the rotation curve. The Tuorla-Heidelberg model does allow for a variety of exponential scale lengths; MOND prefers short scale lengths in the range 2.0 kpc ≲ Rd ≲ 2.5 kpc. The favored value of Rd depends …

Sph Simulations Of Direct Impact Accretion In The Ultracompact Am Cvn Binaries, Joshua Dolence, Matt A. Wood, Isaac Silver Aug 2008

Sph Simulations Of Direct Impact Accretion In The Ultracompact Am Cvn Binaries, Joshua Dolence, Matt A. Wood, Isaac Silver

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

The ultracompact binary systems V407 Vul (RX J1914.4+2456) and HM Cnc (RX J0806.3+1527), a two-member subclass of the AM CVn stars, continue to generate interest because they defy unambiguous classification. Three proposed models remain viable at this time, but none of the three are significantly more compelling than the remaining two, and all three can satisfy the observational constraints if parameters in the models are tuned. One of the three proposed models is the direct impact model of Marsh & Steeghs, in which the accretion stream impacts the surface of a rapidly rotating primary white dwarf directly, but at a …

Relating Groundwater To Seasonal Wetlands In Southeastern Wisconsin, Usa, John D. Skalbeck, Donald M. Reed, Randall J. Hunt, Jamie D. Lambert

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Historically, drier types of wetlands have been difficult to characterize and are not well researched. Nonetheless, they are considered to reflect the precipitation history with little, if any, regard for possible relation to groundwater. Two seasonal coastal wetland types (wet prairie, sedge meadow) were investigated during three growing seasons at three sites in the Lake Michigan Basin, Wisconsin, USA. The six seasonal wetlands were characterized using standard soil and vegetation techniques and groundwater measurements from the shallow and deep systems. They all met wetland hydrology criteria (e.g., water within 30 cm of land surface for 5% of the growing season) …

Parameter Estimation In Tidally Influenced Numerical Models:Determination Of An Appropriate Objective Function, Jennifer N. Tate

Theses and Dissertations

The research detailed in this study focuses on the determination of an appropriate objective function to aid parameter estimation when simulating areas influenced by tidally varying flows. Three objective functions that are measures of how well the model results match field data at several locations and times were tested. A set of test cases is developed to represent tidally influenced systems and allow for the testing of the objective functions. These objective functions were tested by computing their values and comparing them for the various estimated parameters. Based on results of the first method of testing a further analysis was …

The human interaction (ignition source) and density of fuels is assessed by Newton’s Gravitational theory. Euclidean distance to perennial streams and slope that do posses a significant role were derived using GIS …

Assessing Impact Of Instruction Treatments On Positive Test Selection In Hypothesis Testing, Daniel Wade Carruth Aug 2008

Assessing Impact Of Instruction Treatments On Positive Test Selection In Hypothesis Testing, Daniel Wade Carruth

Theses and Dissertations

The role of factors previously implicated as leading to confirmation bias during hypothesis testing was explored. Confirmation bias is a phenomenon in which people select cases for testing when the expected results of the case are more likely to support their current belief than falsify it. Klayman (1995) proposed three primary determinants for confirmation bias. Klayman and his colleagues proposed that a general positive testing strategy leads to the phenomenon of confirmation bias. According to Klayman’s account, participants in previous research were not actively working to support their hypothesis. Rather, they were applying a valid hypothesis testing strategy that works …

Nonlinear Dynamic Invariants For Continuous Speech Recognition, Daniel Olen May Aug 2008

Nonlinear Dynamic Invariants For Continuous Speech Recognition, Daniel Olen May

Theses and Dissertations

In this work, nonlinear acoustic information is combined with traditional linear acoustic information in order to produce a noise-robust set of features for speech recognition. Classical acoustic modeling techniques for speech recognition have relied on a standard assumption of linear acoustics where signal processing is primarily performed in the signal's frequency domain. While these conventional techniques have demonstrated good performance under controlled conditions, the performance of these systems suffers significant degradations when the acoustic data is contaminated with previously unseen noise. The objective of this thesis was to determine whether nonlinear dynamic invariants are able to boost speech recognition performance …
