Hybridization Among Three Native North American Canis Species In A Region Of Natural Sympatry, Frank Hailer, Jennifer A. Leonard Oct 2008

Hybridization Among Three Native North American Canis Species In A Region Of Natural Sympatry, Frank Hailer, Jennifer A. Leonard

Rocky Mountain Wolf Recovery: Annual Reports

Background: Population densities of many species throughout the world are changing due to direct persecution as well as anthropogenic habitat modification. These changes may induce or increase the frequency of hybridization among taxa. If extensive, hybridization can threaten the genetic integrity or survival of endangered species. Three native species of the genus Canis, coyote (C. latrans), Mexican wolf (C. lupus baileyi) and red wolf (C. rufus), were historically sympatric in Texas, United States. Human impacts caused the latter two to go extinct in the wild, although they survived in captive breeding programs. Morphological data demonstrate historic reproductive isolation between all …

Energetics Of Peptide (Phlip) Binding To And Folding Across A Lipid Bilayer Membrane, Yana K. Reshetnyak, Oleg A. Andreev, Michael Segala, Vladislav S. Markin, Donald M. Engelman

Physics Faculty Publications

The pH low-insertion peptide (pHLIP) serves as a model system for peptide insertion and folding across a lipid bilayer. It has three general states: (I) soluble in water or (II) bound to the surface of a lipid bilayer as an unstructured monomer, and (III) inserted across the bilayer as a monomeric α-helix. We used fluorescence spectroscopy and isothermal titration calorimetry to study the interactions of pHLIP with a palmitoyloleoylphosphatidylcholine (POPC) lipid bilayer and to calculate the transition energies between states. We found that the Gibbs free energy of binding to a POPC surface at low pHLIP concentration (state I–state II …

Unavoidable Subgraphs Of Colored Graphs, Jonathan Cutler, Balázs Montágh Oct 2008

Unavoidable Subgraphs Of Colored Graphs, Jonathan Cutler, Balázs Montágh

Department of Mathematics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

A natural generalization of graph Ramsey theory is the study of unavoidable sub-graphs in large colored graphs. In this paper, we find a minimal family of unavoidable graphs in two-edge-colored graphs. Namely, for a positive even integer k, let Sk be the family of two-edge-colored graphs on k vertices such that one of the colors forms either two disjoint Kk / 2's or simply one Kk / 2. Bollobás conjectured that for all k and ε{lunate} > 0, there exists an n (k, ε{lunate}) such that if n ≥ n (k, ε{lunate}) then every two-edge-coloring of Kn, in which the density …

Theoretical Top Quark Cross Section At The Fermilab Tevatron And The Cern Lhc, Nikolaos Kidonakis, Ramona Vogt Oct 2008

Theoretical Top Quark Cross Section At The Fermilab Tevatron And The Cern Lhc, Nikolaos Kidonakis, Ramona Vogt

Faculty Articles

We present results for the top quark pair cross section at the Tevatron and the LHC. We use the resummed double differential cross section, employing the fully kinematics-dependent soft-anomalous-dimension matrices, to calculate the soft-gluon contributions at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO). We improve and update our previous estimates by refining our methods, including further subleading terms, and employing the most recent parton distribution function sets. The NNLO soft corrections significantly enhance the NLO cross section while considerably reducing the scale dependence. We provide a detailed discussion of all theoretical uncertainties in our calculation, including kinematics, scale, and parton distribution uncertainties, and clarify …

Photoproduction of beauty quarks in events with two jets and an electron associated with one of the jets has been studied with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 120pb-1. The fractions of events containing b quarks, and also of events containing c quarks, were extracted from a likelihood fit using variables sensitive to electron identification as well as to semileptonic decays. Total and differential cross sections for beauty and charm production were measured and compared with next-to-leading-order QCD calculations and MonteCarlo models. © 2008 The American Physical Society.

Earth and Soil Sciences

Serpentinitic soils often contain high concentrations of heavy metals, including chromium (Cr) and nickel (Ni). Soils derived from serpentine parent material are used for agricultural purposes throughout San Luis Obispo County, CA. This study was undertaken to determine the amount of total and bioaccessible Cr and Ni in soil and vine tissue from a vineyard planted on soils derived from serpentine geology. Eighteen soil and plant samples were collected from different slope position and vine types (syrah and chardonnay). Soil samples were collected from about 0 to 30 cm at the base of the vines and 15 to 20 leaf …

An Investigation Of The Security Designs Of A Structured Query Language (Sql) Database And Its Middleware Application And Their Secure Implementation Within Thinclient Environments, Melissa D. Winner-Leoni Oct 2008

An Investigation Of The Security Designs Of A Structured Query Language (Sql) Database And Its Middleware Application And Their Secure Implementation Within Thinclient Environments, Melissa D. Winner-Leoni

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

The Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and The SarbanesOxley (SOX) regulations greatly influenced the health care industry regarding the means of securing financial and private data within information and technology. With the introduction of thinclient technologies into medical information systems (IS), data security and regulation compliancy becomes more problematic due to the exposure to the World Wide Web (WWW) and malicious activity. This author explores the best practices of the medical industry and information technology industry for securing electronic data within the thinclient environment at the three levels of architecture: the SQL database, its middleware application, and Web interface. …

Contributions To Khovanov Homology, Stephan M. Wehrli Oct 2008

Contributions To Khovanov Homology, Stephan M. Wehrli

Mathematics - All Scholarship

Khovanov homology ist a new link invariant, discovered by M. Khovanov, and used by J. Rasmussen to give a combinatorial proof of the Milnor conjecture. In this thesis, we give examples of mutant links with different Khovanov homology. We prove that Khovanov's chain complex retracts to a subcomplex, whose generators are related to spanning trees of the Tait graph, and we exploit this result to investigate the structure of Khovanov homology for alternating knots. Further, we extend Rasmussen's invariant to links. Finally, we generalize Khovanov's categorifications of the colored Jones polynomial, and study conditions under which our categorifications are functorial …

Triticeae contains hundreds of species of both annual and perennial types. Although substantial genomic tools are available for annual Triticeae cereals such as wheat and barley, the perennial Triticeae lack sufficient genomic resources for genetic mapping or diversity research. To increase the amount of sequence information available in the perennial Triticeae, three expressed sequence tag (EST) libraries were developed and annotated for Pseudoroegneria spicata, a mixture of both Elymus wawawaiensis and E. lanceolatus, and a Leymus cinereus x L. triticoides interspecific hybrid. The ESTs were combined into unigene sets of 8 780 unigenes for P. spicata, 11 281 unigenes for …

Butyric acid and trichostatin A (TSA) are anti-cancer compounds that cause the upregulation of genes involved in differentiation and cell cycle regulation by inhibiting histone deacetylase (HDAC) activity. In this study we have synthesized and evaluated compounds that combine the bioavailability of short-chain fatty acids, like butyric acid, with the bidentate binding ability of TSA. A series of analogs were made to examine the effects of chain length, simple aromatic cap groups, and substituted hydroxamates on the compounds' ability to inhibit rat-liver HDAC using a fluorometric assay. In keeping with previous structure-activity relationships, the most effective inhibitors consisted of longer …
