Comparison Of Career Statistics And Season Statistics In Major League Baseball, Mark Joseph Ammons Jan 2008

Comparison Of Career Statistics And Season Statistics In Major League Baseball, Mark Joseph Ammons

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This is a comparison of statistics for some of the best seasons and careers of players from Major League Baseball; using data collected on batting average, at bat to homerun ratio, and earned run average. Two teams were created, composed of season leaders and career leaders, chosen for their outstanding offensive and pitching abilities, and were pitted against one another to determine superiority. These two teams also compared against a team from each era of major league baseball. The season and career leaders challenged, the 1918 Boston Red Sox, 1927 New York Yankees, 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers, 1961 New York Yankees, …

Correction To "Stochastic Comparisons Of Parallel Systems When Components Have Proportional Hazard Rates", Subhash C. Kochar, Maochao Xu Jan 2008

Correction To "Stochastic Comparisons Of Parallel Systems When Components Have Proportional Hazard Rates", Subhash C. Kochar, Maochao Xu

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

In the article "Stochastic comparisons of parallel systems when component have proportional hazard rates" we found a gap in the middle of the proof of Theorem 3.2. Therefore, we do not know whether Theorem 3.2 is true for the reverse hazard rate order. However, we could prove the following weaker result for the stochastic order.

Order Restricted Inference For Comparing The Cumulative Incidence Of A Competing Risk Over Several Populations, Hammou El Barmi, Subhash C. Kochar, Hari Mukerjee Jan 2008

Order Restricted Inference For Comparing The Cumulative Incidence Of A Competing Risk Over Several Populations, Hammou El Barmi, Subhash C. Kochar, Hari Mukerjee

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

There is a substantial literature on testing for the equality of the cumulative incidence functions associated with one specific cause in a competing risks setting across several populations against specific or all alternatives. In this paper we propose an asymptotically distribution-free test when the alternative is that the incidence functions are linearly ordered, but not equal. The motivation stems from the fact that in many examples such a linear ordering seems reasonable intuitively and is borne out generally from empirical observations. These tests are more powerful when the ordering is justified. We also provide estimators of the incidence functions under …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The objective of this research was to investigate the skeletal muscle response to a chronic administration of stretch-shortening cycles (SSCs) in young and old rats. Dorsiflexor muscles of old and young rats were exposed 3 times per week for 4.5 weeks to a protocol of 80 maximal stretch-shortening cycles per exposure in vivo. Skeletal muscle response was characterized by force and work parameters of the stretch-shortening contraction at each exposure interval. The performance of the young and old groups was not statistically different at the start of the exposure, but increased significantly by 25%-30% in the young animals and decreased …

Heuristics For The Dynamic Facility Layout Problem With Unequal Area Departments, Artak Hakobyan Jan 2008

Heuristics For The Dynamic Facility Layout Problem With Unequal Area Departments, Artak Hakobyan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The facility layout problem (FLP) is a well researched problem of finding positions of departments on a plant floor such that departments do not overlap and some objective(s) is (are) optimized. In this dissertation, the FLP with unequal area rectangular shaped departments is considered, when material flows between departments change during the planning horizon. This problem is known as the dynamic FLP. The change in material flows between pairs of departments in consecutive periods may require rearrangements of departments during the planning horizon in order to keep material handling costs low. The objective of our problem is to minimize the …

Involvement Of Adenosine A1 Receptors In Systemic Inflammation And Altered Vascular Reactivity In Allergic Mice, Dovenia S. Ponnoth Jan 2008

Involvement Of Adenosine A1 Receptors In Systemic Inflammation And Altered Vascular Reactivity In Allergic Mice, Dovenia S. Ponnoth

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Epidemiological studies have established that people who have lung diseases such as asthma and COPD are likely to develop adverse cardiovascular events. While the reason for this has not been elucidated, it is believed that inflammation could be the key component linking the two conditions. Adenosine, an endogenous purine nucleoside, has been strongly implicated in asthma pathophysiology and also has potent effects on the cardiovascular system. This work was undertaken to gain a better understanding of the relationship between asthma and its cardiovascular effects, and more specifically the possible role adenosine plays under these conditions.;We hypothesize that asthmatic lung inflammation …

Investigation Of Mud Filtrate Invasion Using Computational Fluid Dynamics, Suyoun Won Jan 2008

Investigation Of Mud Filtrate Invasion Using Computational Fluid Dynamics, Suyoun Won

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Despite continued research and developments in logging technology, logs processed by the prevalent standard methods continue to be influenced by formation damage and mud filtrate invasions. The mud-filtrate invasion and related formation damage due to drilling fluids can result in the misinterpreted values of rock and fluid properties in the reservoir which can affect the well plan. Well planning with accurate information of target reservoir is a very important part of any drilling procedure, as it would not only optimize drilling operation and completion but also maximizes production of oil and gas.;To produce hydrocarbons effectively, the wellbore must communicate with …

Gradient-Based Edge Detection On A Hexagonal Structure, Xiangjian He, Qiang Wu, Tom Hintz, Wenjing Jia Jan 2008

Gradient-Based Edge Detection On A Hexagonal Structure, Xiangjian He, Qiang Wu, Tom Hintz, Wenjing Jia

Business Review

Gradient-based edge detection is a straightforward method to identify the edge points in the original grey-level image. It is intuitive that in the human vision system the edge points always appear where the grey-level value is greatly changed. Spiral Architecture is a relatively new image data structure that is inspired from anatomical considerations of the primate’s vision. In Spiral Architecture, each image is represented as a collection of hexagonal pixels. Edge detection on Spiral Architecture has features of fast computation and accurate localization. In this paper, we review the gradient-based edge detection algorithms on Spiral Architecture. An edge point is …

Fantasy, Fashion And Fact : Middle Schools, Middle Schooling And Student Achievement, Stephen Dinham, Ken Rowe Jan 2008

Fantasy, Fashion And Fact : Middle Schools, Middle Schooling And Student Achievement, Stephen Dinham, Ken Rowe

School and system improvement

This paper provides a critical review of the literature that has attempted to identify ‘best practice’ in middle schooling.. It is noted that despite the large and burgeoning literature claiming positive effects of approaches to middle schooling that focus on the cognitive, developmental, social and emotional needs of adolescents, evidence to substantiate the claims remain elusive. Rather, it is suggested that emphasis is best directed at building evidence-based pedagogical capacity in school’s most valuable resources – teachers. Further, it is argued that whereas prevailing adherence to the moribund philosophies of biological and social determinism are foremost among several ‘barriers’ to …

In follow-up one-on-one semi-structured interviews, the participants (undergraduates, teaching assistants, and faculty member) reviewed interactions and responded to a 10-item, 7-point Likert-scaled interview. Interactions were classified into success categories based on participants' opinions. Quantitative and qualitative …

The Opportunity To Learn: Identification And Measurement Of School Conditions That Contextualize Student Achievement, Amy L. Burns Jan 2008

The Opportunity To Learn: Identification And Measurement Of School Conditions That Contextualize Student Achievement, Amy L. Burns

Open Access Dissertations

Current educational accountability systems, which are based primarily on school-aggregate and student subgroup results of annual achievement testing, fail to address two fundamental and interrelated issues at the school level: the identification of opportunity-to-learn (OTL) conditions that impact how students perform and the measurement of these conditions for longitudinal school improvement. Three factors which emerge from review of literature as influential OTL conditions are instructional quality, parent involvement, and school climate. A reliable method for determining the existing levels of these OTL factors in schools is sought as a means of gauging school progress over time that does not depend …

Beyond Reflection Of Job Performance: An Investigation Of How Initial Status Teachers Reflect On Practice To Address The Educational Needs Of Their Students, Andrew Peter Kelley Jan 2008

Beyond Reflection Of Job Performance: An Investigation Of How Initial Status Teachers Reflect On Practice To Address The Educational Needs Of Their Students, Andrew Peter Kelley

Open Access Dissertations

This study examines how teachers with initial status licensing utilize reflective practice in relation to previous classroom experiences. The research on teacher development has shown that although there are many examples to help first year teachers through established mentoring programs there is a lack of support for teachers as they enter the second and third year of initial status licensure. Using grounded theory methodology this study examined the goals of mentoring programs in relation to teachers who have a foundation of previous experience with students and the curriculum they teach. A one year investigation of five public high school teachers …

Forest Management In The Presence Of Harvest Restrictions Around Vernal Pools: A Metaheuristic Approach, Gabriela Dobrot

Open Access Dissertations

The primary objective of this research is to model the economic opportunity costs of alternative harvest restrictions aimed at conserving and sustaining ecological functions of vernal pools. The simulations performed incorporate a series of economic and ecological factors in order to determine: alternative configurations of canopy cover around the ponds which could produce similar adoption costs, in both a non-spatial and a spatially defined forest structure, optimal harvest schedules when a mix of tree species is being introduced on the studied landscape, as well as the sensitivity of this schedule to different stumpage prices. Methodologically, the results in this study …

Time Perspectivism, Temporal Dynamics, And Battlefield Archaeology: A Case Study From The Santiago Campaign Of 1898, William E. Altizer Jan 2008

Time Perspectivism, Temporal Dynamics, And Battlefield Archaeology: A Case Study From The Santiago Campaign Of 1898, William E. Altizer

Nebraska Anthropologist

Given the unique ability of archaeology to illuminate temporal processes, archaeologists have begun employing a number of theoretical models to understand the nature of these processes, and the ways in which the modern archaeological landscape retains their physical traces. Battlefields, as discrete temporal events taking place in physical settings with their own history, offer an intriguing avenue to explore archaeological temporality. This paper reviews the ways in which archaeologists have employed the Annales approach and time perspectivism, and considers a case study in battlefield archaeology - the 1898 battlefield of EI Caney, Cuba.

Insights From The Field: Perceptions Of In-Home Interventionists Working In Appalachian Maryland., Benjamin T. Brauer

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

As No Child Left Behind continues to impact public K-12 education, educators continue to seek new ways in which to reach out to at-risk students. Many school administrators and school interventionists are using in-home interventions to assist families in facilitating their child’s success. These interventions range from simply bringing instructional materials to the home of a frequently absent student, to facilitating the delivery of mental health services in the home. While school officials are taking on additional roles and responsibilities to try and meet the growing expectations placed on the public K-12 educational system, many feel that they are doing …

Kepler's Method: The Conjoining Of Theoretical And Empirical Science., Marc M. Mezzina Jan 2008

Kepler's Method: The Conjoining Of Theoretical And Empirical Science., Marc M. Mezzina

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Johannes Kepler was a mathematician that changed the way that science was conceived and practiced in the early seventeenth century. Kepler’s method of scientific inquiry consisted of the joining of the theoretical aspects of astronomy with the solid empirical proof provided by observations. Kepler’s method would lead him to the discovery of his three laws of planetary motion, as well as change the fundamental questions asked by the subject of astronomy. This is a look in the method employed by Kepler throughout his most significant scientific works.

A New Method For Detection And Classification Of Out-Of-Control Signals In Autocorrelated Multivariate Processes., Tao Zhao Jan 2008

A New Method For Detection And Classification Of Out-Of-Control Signals In Autocorrelated Multivariate Processes., Tao Zhao

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Autocorrelation results in too many out-of-control false alarms when traditional T2 control charts are used in practice. In this research, a vector autoregressive (VAR) based T 2 control chart is built to improve the effectiveness of the traditional T2 control charts when variables are autocorrelated and cross-correlated. Datasets generated by a SAS program are used to test the performance of the proposed method. Computational results showed that the proposed method outperforms the ARIMA based residual T2 control chart with respect to identification accuracy and average run length. Also, the results showed that the proposed method with principal components analysis is …

Lipschitz Continuity Of The Best Approximation Operator In Vector-Valued Chebyshev Approximation, Martin Bartelt, John Swetits Jan 2008

Lipschitz Continuity Of The Best Approximation Operator In Vector-Valued Chebyshev Approximation, Martin Bartelt, John Swetits

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

When G is a finite dimensional Haar subspace of C(X, Rk), the vector-valued continuous functions (including complex-valued functions when k is 2) from a finite set X to Euclidean k-dimensional space, it is well-known that at any function f in C(X, Rk) the best approximation operator satisfies the strong unicity condition of order 2 and a Lipschitz (H˝older) condition of order 1/2. This note shows that in fact the best approximation operator satisfies the usual Lipschitz condition of order 1.

Automatic Composition Of Themed Mood Pieces, Heather Chan, Dan A. Ventura Jan 2008

Automatic Composition Of Themed Mood Pieces, Heather Chan, Dan A. Ventura

Faculty Publications

Musical harmonization of a given melody is a nontrivial problem; slight variations in instrumentation, voicing, texture, and bass rhythm can lead to significant differences in the mood of the resulting piece. This study explores the possibility of automatic musical composition by using machine learning and statistical natural language processing to tailor a piece to a particular mood using an existing melody.

Analytical Solution To The Wave Equation With Discrete Pressure Sources: A Model For The Rijke Tube, Eduardo G. Perez Jan 2008

Analytical Solution To The Wave Equation With Discrete Pressure Sources: A Model For The Rijke Tube, Eduardo G. Perez

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Despite of having been studied for several decades the phenomena of combustion instabilities are not well understood. Pressure waves due to the combustion instabilities can become violent being detrimental for both the performance and combustor life. A good prediction of the pressure distribution inside the combustor is important in order to prevent theoccurrence of this phenomenon. In this work a technique for solving the wave equation with discrete sources (or sinks) using the Green's functions was developed. One and two-dimensional approaches for cylindrical and Cartesian coordinates withconstant speed of sound were solved. Also the case of one-dimensional axially varying temperature …

A New Era Of Federal Sentencing: The Guidelines Provide District Court Judges A Cloak, But Is Gall Their Dagger?, Anna E. Papa Jan 2008

A New Era Of Federal Sentencing: The Guidelines Provide District Court Judges A Cloak, But Is Gall Their Dagger?, Anna E. Papa

Georgia Law Review

Federal district court judges today have a level of sentencing discretion that has been unknown since the adoption of the United States Sentencing Guidelines. This Note reviews the history of the Guidelines and outlines the problems that have resulted from the Supreme Court's decisions in Booker, Rita, and Gall This Note argues that the confusion may be clarified by giving effect to the text of 18 U.S.C. §3553(a), which requires that federal district court judges impose sentences that are sufficient, but not greater than necessary, and requires them to examine all the factors provided in the statute. The court's recent …

The β-Tubulin Gene As A Means To Discriminate Species And Verify Evolutionary Patterns Of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi., Zola Msiska Jan 2008

The β-Tubulin Gene As A Means To Discriminate Species And Verify Evolutionary Patterns Of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi., Zola Msiska

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) associating with 80% of vascular plant families increase uptake of nutrients and water in plants, help to stabilize soil aggregates and improve soil aeration, water percolation and carbon storage. Phylogeny of AMF based on rDNA sequences is in conflict with morphology-based phylogeny. The aim of the present study was to examine a protein encoding gene, β-tubulin, in order to test conclusions drawn from rDNA sequences and morphological data. Inverse-PCR was used to amplify full-length β-tubulin genes of Gigaspora gigantea and Glomus clarum. The gene in both species is organized into five exons and four introns encoding …

Is Congruence Dead? An Examination Of The Correlation Between Holland's Congruence And Job Satisfaction Using Improved Methodology., Shannon Marie Bowles Jan 2008

Is Congruence Dead? An Examination Of The Correlation Between Holland's Congruence And Job Satisfaction Using Improved Methodology., Shannon Marie Bowles

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Job satisfaction is considered to be the most important and frequently examined outcome variable in congruence research. The assumption that congruence results in job satisfaction is fundamental to Holland's theory; however, the empirical evidence predominantly indicates that the congruence - job satisfaction correlation is, at best, equivocal. There is a movement within vocational psychology that the congruence construct is “dead” as a viable theoretical concept and that the field should abandon Holland's theory. This idea does not exist without significant argument, however. It has been recognized widely that congruence has not fared better in the empirical research literature because methodological …

Back To The Beginning: An Essay On The Court, The Law Of Democracy, And Trust, Luis Fuentes-Rohwer Jan 2008

Back To The Beginning: An Essay On The Court, The Law Of Democracy, And Trust, Luis Fuentes-Rohwer

Articles by Maurer Faculty

The law of democracy is in a state of incoherence. The experiment begun by Baker v. Carr showed great promise yet soon gave way to disappointment. The promise was one of modest review and respect for political choices made elsewhere. A presumption was still against judicial involvement: absent self-entrenchment or distrust of political outcomes, the Court would stay its hand. But, the reality has been far from that. The presumption has now clearly shifted, and the Court intervenes in politically-charged controversies as a matter of course. This raises a question at the heart of the law of democracy: can we …
