Understanding The Motivations Of Rock Climbers: A Social Worlds Study, Amy Miller Ansari Jan 2008

Understanding The Motivations Of Rock Climbers: A Social Worlds Study, Amy Miller Ansari

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Rock climbing affects public lands through erosion, destruction of vegetation, and disturbance to historical sites. Minimum impact messages can help reduce impacts but requires understanding characteristics of the message recipient. The purpose of this study was to understand the motivations of rock climbers to help land managers design more effective minimum impact messages. This study assesses the motivations of rock climbers using a social worlds approach, focusing on the sub-worlds of. traditional climbers, sport climbers, and boulderers. I found that traditional climbers are most motivated to pursue a wilderness experience, climb in a natural wilderness setting, and climb in quiet …

Symmetric Groups And Conjugacy Classes, Edith Adan-Bante, Helena Verrill Jan 2008

Symmetric Groups And Conjugacy Classes, Edith Adan-Bante, Helena Verrill

Faculty Publications

Let S, be the symmetric group of degree n where n > 5. Given any non-trivial alpha, beta is an element of S-n, we prove that the product alpha(Sn)beta(Sn) of the conjugacy classes alpha(Sn) and beta(Sn) is never a conjugacy class. Furthermore, if n is odd and not a multiple of three, then alpha(Sn)beta(Sn) is the union of at least three distinct conjugacy classes. We also describe the elements alpha, beta is an element of S-n in the case when alpha(Sn)beta(Sn) is the union of exactly two distinct conjugacy classes.

Alternative Parametric Boundary Reconstruction Method For Biomedical Imaging, Joseph Kolibal, Daniel Howard Jan 2008

Alternative Parametric Boundary Reconstruction Method For Biomedical Imaging, Joseph Kolibal, Daniel Howard

Faculty Publications

Determining the outline or boundary contour of a two-dimensional object, or the surface of a three-dimensional object poses difficulties particularly when there is substantial measurement noise or uncertainty. By adapting the mathematical approach of stochastic function recovery to this task, it is possible to obtain usable estimates for these boundaries, even in the presence of large amounts of noise. The technique is applied to parametric boundary data and has potential applications in biomedical imaging. It should be considered as one of several techniques to improve the visualization of images. Unusual Digital Patterns In Eps: Evidence On The Association Between Earnings Management And Company Characteristics, Charles E. Jordan, Stanley J. Clark, Mary M. Anderson Jan 2008

Unusual Digital Patterns In Eps: Evidence On The Association Between Earnings Management And Company Characteristics, Charles E. Jordan, Stanley J. Clark, Mary M. Anderson

Faculty Publications

Prior studies (Thomas, 1989; Das and Zhang, 2003) provide evidence of earnings manipulation to achieve cognitive reference points in EPS. The current study extends this line of research by examining the relation between unusual digital patterns in the right EPS position and specific firm characteristics. Results suggest that the propensity to manage earnings to effect desired EPS results is particularly associated with company size and to a lesser degree with operating performance and the level of debt leverage employed.

The Texas School Finance Litigation Saga: Great Progress, Then Near Death By A Thousand Cuts., Albert H. Kauffman Jan 2008

The Texas School Finance Litigation Saga: Great Progress, Then Near Death By A Thousand Cuts., Albert H. Kauffman

St. Mary's Law Journal

The Texas Legislature’s system for financing Texas schools is significantly more equitable after Edgewood v. Kirby. Edgewood I and Edgewood II effectively forced the legislature to improve the finance system. However, the rulings in the first two Edgewood cases have been whittled away by the last four Edgewood decisions.. As a result, courts now approach fundamental issues, legislative power, and the relationship between them differently. The Edgewood v. Kirby legacy still improves the equity and adequacy of Texas’s public education finance system. This legacy is expanded upon with observations regarding long term impacts of the Texas school finance litigation saga.

The Wheel Garden: Project Based Learning For Cross Curriculum Education, Sherry S. Herron, Douglas Magomo, Paula Rae Gossard

Faculty Publications

In this article, we discuss project-based learning in the context of a wheel garden as an instructional tool in science and mathematics education. A wheel garden provides multiple opportunities to teach across the curriculum, to integrate disciplines, and to promote community involvement. Grounded in the theoretical framework of constructivism, the wheel garden provides a multidisciplined educational tool that provides a hands-on, non-traditional arena for learning. We will examine some of the cultural, art, science, and mathematics connections made with this project

The Flawed Institutional Design Of U.S. Merger Review: Stacking The Deck Against Enforcement, Lionel M. Frankel Jan 2008

The Flawed Institutional Design Of U.S. Merger Review: Stacking The Deck Against Enforcement, Lionel M. Frankel

Utah Law Review

Most proposed mergers are procompetitive or competitively neutral. A few are anticompetitive and thus forbidden by law. If we were to design an institutional system, from scratch, to identify and prohibit the small percentage of proposed mergers that are anticompetitive, what should such a system look like? The answer depends, in part, upon the goals of the system and the costs of implementation. Presumably, such a system ought to strive for a high degree of accuracy in identifying which mergers are anticompetitive. In other words, it ought to avoid both “false positives” (erroneous condemnations of procompetitive mergers) and “false negatives” …

A Method To Protect Computer Programs: The Integration Of Copyright, Trade Secrets, And Anticircumvention Measures, Deborah Azar Jan 2008

A Method To Protect Computer Programs: The Integration Of Copyright, Trade Secrets, And Anticircumvention Measures, Deborah Azar

Utah Law Review

Unlike other forms of expression,' software was born digital, making protection against copying one of the main concerns of the software industry. Software is machine-readable code, written by humans, that gives instructions to a computer. Software can also be read by humans. Software is written in source code and then compiled into object code in order for it to be read by a computer. That code can be decompiled with the use of other programs which perform an operation to reverse the code. In 1994~ Pamela Samuelson, Randall Davis, Mitchell D. Kapor, and J. H. Reichman ended their Manifesto Concerning …

Motivating Middle Level Students : Strategies To Help Reach And Teach Middle Level Students, Lisa L. Munsey

Graduate Research Papers

This review of literature focused on the strategies educators use for motivating the young adolescent in the middle level classroom.

Anderman and Maehr (1994) found motivation could be improved through a variety of methods by focusing on specific areas: developmental changes, intrinsic versus extrinsic, middle level transformation and classroom practice. Along these same lines, Curwin (2006) found motivation can be enhanced with practices in the middle level classroom through four main areas: (1) welcoming students to school and class, (2) stressing the effort students put forth, (3) increasing homework completion, and (4) turbo charging classroom lessons.

This paper focused on …

The Earthquake Catalogues For Turkey, Onur Tan, M. Cengi̇z Tapirdamaz, Ahmet Yörük

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The earthquake data from instrumental records in the last 40 years indicate the general seismicity of the earth. However, examining historical records is necessary to understand long-term seismicity. Catalogue studies about historical earthquakes in Turkey are limited. All these catalogues are on printed paper and a digital database has not yet been prepared. On the other hand, there is no common database for the focal mechanism solutions of the recent destructive earthquakes (Mw>=5.5) in the region. The present study aims to prepare two new digital databases for earth scientists so that the earthquake parameters can be reached from a …

Post-Miocene Deformation In The South Of The Galatean Volcanic Province, Nw Of Central Anatolia (Turkey), Bora Rojay, A. Karaca Jan 2008

Post-Miocene Deformation In The South Of The Galatean Volcanic Province, Nw Of Central Anatolia (Turkey), Bora Rojay, A. Karaca

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Central Anatolia, located on the immense Alpine-Himalayan orogenic belt, has a complicated neotectonic evolution, and NE-SW-trending Neogene horsts-graben systems that rejuvenate pre-existing palaeostructures are among the most important structures which help us understand the tectonic evolution of Central Anatolia. Post-Miocene deformational studies were carried out in Miocene-Quaternary sequences situated at the southeastern margin of the Galatean Volcanic Province (NW of Central Anatolia, Turkey) in order to understand the deformational history of Central Anatolia. The structural analyses were based on bedding attitude data and fault plane slip data. Fold analysis in Miocene units gave an asymmetrical fold axis trending 046ºN. Although …

Punctuated Exhumation And Foreland Basin Formation And Infilling In (Circum)-Central Anatolia (Turkey) Associated With The Neo-Tethyan Closure, Durmuş Boztuğ, Haluk Temi̇z, Raymond Jonckheere, Lothar Ratscbacher Jan 2008

Punctuated Exhumation And Foreland Basin Formation And Infilling In (Circum)-Central Anatolia (Turkey) Associated With The Neo-Tethyan Closure, Durmuş Boztuğ, Haluk Temi̇z, Raymond Jonckheere, Lothar Ratscbacher

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Apatite fission-track data indicate that the (circum)-central Anatolian granitoids (CAG) were exhumed during successive shortening phases following continent-continent collisions within the Neo-Tethyan domain in central and east-central Anatolia. The Early to Middle Paleocene exhumation of the CAG is thought to be a consequence of the collision between the Tauride-Anatolide platform (TAP) and the Eurasian plate (EP) following the consumption of the İzmir-Ankara-Erzincan strand of the northern Neo-Tethys. The Oligocene exhumation documented by the data for the Kösedağ pluton in east-central Anatolia is considered to be related to the compression due to continuing convergence between the EP and TAP which seems …

The Çamlıdere area, in the Galatean Volcanic Province (Ankara), Turkey, is composed of rhyolitic, andesitic, trachytic, dacitic and locally basaltic rocks. The older volcanic rocks in the studied area are rhyolitic and the younger ones basaltic. The phenocrysts from all the volcanic rocks exhibit some petrographic disequilibrium features such as: (a) coexistence of reversely, normally and oscillatory zoned sieved or unsieved plagioclase in the same rock; (b) wide compositional variation of An% in feldspar phenocrysts; (c) sieved, unsieved, normally and reversely zoned pyroxenes occur together in a single rock; (d) some orthopyroxene phenocrysts are surrounded by clinopyroxene; (e) reaction textures, …

Statistical Earthquake Frequency Analysis For Western Anatolia, Esi̇n Fi̇ruzan Jan 2008

Statistical Earthquake Frequency Analysis For Western Anatolia, Esi̇n Fi̇ruzan

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

In order to apply a statistical earthquake frequency analysis to western Anatolia, the area has been restricted within coordinates 36.50º-40º North and 26.00º-30.00º East. Data used in the analysis belong to the instrumental period from 1.1.1900 to 10.11.2006 (Ms ≥ 4.0). The earthquake record was assumed to be representative of longer periods and the possibility of clusters of seismicity or of extreme magnitude events were ignored. The study area has been divided into eight zones with different seismotectonic properties. All computations have been performed for these zones separately. The earthquake magnitude series is termed as the instantaneous peak over the …

Quaternary calcretes are widespread in the Mersin area and occur in a variety of forms. Several distinct calcrete profiles are recognized and subdivided into two major groups defined by mature and immature profiles. Mature calcrete profiles comprise a generally isolated calcrete horizon at the base and hard laminated crust at the top with rarely pisolithic crust in the uppermost part. The immature calcrete profiles consist mainly of an isolated calcrete horizon which is rarely overlain by a laminated crust. Calcrete forms show three main stages of development: (i) a mottled or plugged horizon, comprising isolated calcrete forms such as powdery, …

Relative Sea-Level Changes Of The Lower Cretaceous Deposits In The Chotts Area Of Southern Tunisia, Lazzez Marzouk, Mohamed Ben Youssef Jan 2008

Relative Sea-Level Changes Of The Lower Cretaceous Deposits In The Chotts Area Of Southern Tunisia, Lazzez Marzouk, Mohamed Ben Youssef

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

A transition facies between evaporate and clay, carbonate and siliciclastic deposits occurs within the Lower Cretaceous of Southern Tunisia. The sedimentary deposits comprise four major transgressive-regressive sedimentary sequences with distinctive sabkha, tidal to shallow carbonate marine platform, and mixed siliciclastic ramp environments. Sedimentation rates, as well as thickness and facies changes were controlled by tectonic, climatic and eustatic factors. Transgression pulses encompassing the whole Late Hauterivian-Barremian, Early Aptian and Late Albian have controlled the basin infill. Evaporate and siliciclastic systems pass gradually to carbonate deposition in the Chotts area. Our sedimentation model helps to decipher the roles of tectonics and, …

Effects Of Opacity On Stellar Radii And Their Relevance To Observational Data, Gülay İnlek, Aysun Böke, Oktay Yilmaz, Edwin Budding

Turkish Journal of Physics

We have examined the effect of varying opacities on envelope structure with the aid of Paczynski's public domain stellar modelling programs. For this, we prepared new opacity tables from the data of Kurucz [1], using Lagrange interpolation to obtain the tabular values. We compare the results of these Kurucz opacities with similar tabulations from Huebner et al. [2], Iglesias and Rogers [3], Rogers and Iglesias [4] and Iglesias and Rogers [5]. We have checked calculations for the same ranges of stars considered originally by Schwarzschild [6], and compared our findings, using newer opacity data, with those of other sources. We …

Emc Effect Using Thermodynamical Bag Model, Kuppusamy Ganesamurthy, Raghavan Sambasivam

Turkish Journal of Physics

The nuclear EMC effect has been evaluated in the entire range of Bjorken variable x for the value of Q^2 = 5 GeV^2 using the phenomenological model known as the Thermodynamical bag model (TBM) and the results have been compared with the experimental values obtained in the deep inelastic scattering by SLAC and BCDMS. Also the values of structure function ratio are obtained as a function of Nachtmann variable \xi , which is used to represent the quark momentum in the Bjorken limit.

Calculated Pressure Induced Bcc-Fcc Phase Transitions In Alkali Metals, Hamdi̇ Dağistanli, Riza Haluk Mutlu Jan 2008

Calculated Pressure Induced Bcc-Fcc Phase Transitions In Alkali Metals, Hamdi̇ Dağistanli, Riza Haluk Mutlu

Turkish Journal of Physics

The partial occupation numbers and density of states (DOS), and the total DOS at the Fermi level are calculated as a function of reduced atomic volume for bcc and fcc alkali metals employing the linear-muffin-tin-orbital (LMTO) method. By means of the abrupt changes obtained in the partial and total DOS values at the Fermi level, good agreement with regard to experiment were found in predicting the bcc-fcc transition volumes of the alkali metals.

Nonlinear Process Between Co-Propagating Signal And Control Pulses In Semiconductor Optical Amplifiers, Jianwei Wu, Hai-Bo Bao Jan 2008

Nonlinear Process Between Co-Propagating Signal And Control Pulses In Semiconductor Optical Amplifiers, Jianwei Wu, Hai-Bo Bao

Turkish Journal of Physics

A nonlinear process between co-propagating signal and control pulses has been proposed and demonstrated numerically, based on semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOA). Results show that a Gaussian signal pulse with picosecond duration can be simultaneously amplified and compressed in a SOA by utilizing a co-propagating high-intensity control pulse. To obtain high quality signal pulse with high peak power level and short pulse width, the center carrier wavelengths of two pulses should locate in the gain region of the SOA. The initial delay time between both pulses should be tuned suitably before entering the SOA.
