“Revisiting The Ocucaje Opened Tunic From The Textile Museum; Washington, D.C.: Textile Models And The Process Of Imitation”, Sophie Desrosiers
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
The opened tunic from the Textile Museum in Washington D. C. (fig. 1) is a beautiful object the colors and design of which are well known since a part of it was used 22 years ago on the cover of The Junius B. Bird Conference On Andean Textiles. The tunic has no archaeological context, but its characteristics place it among Early Horizon Epoch 9 woven fabrics from Ocucaje.
Mary Elizabeth King has described the piece in her doctoral thesis. It is made of four widths: two main panels in balanced plain-weave with discontinuous warp-and-weft, and two borders in triple …

Measurement Of The Critical Curve Of A Synthetic Antiferromagnet, Cosmin Radu, Dorin Cimpoesu, Alexandru Stancu, Leonard Spinu
Physics Faculty Publications
In this paper, we propose a method for a synthetic antiferromagnet structure’s critical curve determination. The method is based on reversible susceptibility’s singularities detection, as the magnetic field is swept along easy axis, in both positive and negative direction, while a hard axis bias field is also applied. By performing susceptibility measurements with different values of the bias field, the critical curve can be determined. Knowing the critical curve of a synthetic antiferromagnetic structure is essential for devices such as magnetic random access memories.

We report our study of the evolution of superconductivity and the phase diagram of the ternary Fe(Se1−xTex)0.82 (0≤x≤1.0) system. We discovered a superconducting phase with Tc,max=14 K in the 0.30.82, which exhibits an incommensurate antiferromagnetic order. We discuss the relationship between the superconductivity and magnetism of this material system in terms of recent results from neutron-scattering measurements. Our results and analyses suggest that superconductivity in this class of Fe-based compounds is associated with magnetic fluctuations and therefore may be unconventional in nature.

We report on the dynamic properties of Permalloy nanostrips at gagahertz frequencies. The thickness of the strips is 100 nm, strip width is 300 nm, strip spacing is 1 μm, and length is 0.3–100 μm; aspect ratios are 1:1, 1:2, 1:3, 1:5, 1:10, and 1:333. The dynamic behavior was studied by network analyzer ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) using Permalloy strips on a coplanar waveguide in flip-chip geometry. The FMR mode frequencies (fr) can be controlled by the aspect ratio as well as by the applied magnetic field (H). In longer strips (1:10 and 1:333), …

Slay The Three-Headed Demon!, Peggy C. Davis
Slay The Three-Headed Demon!, Peggy C. Davis

An invisible demon walks the halls of all the law schools I have known, vexing the learning environment and discouraging engagement. This demon is a special breed of the Dysfunctional Hierarchy species.' It has three heads. The middle head, Intelligence Bias, does most of the demon's thinking. On either side are the smoky-nostriled head of Intellectual Segregation and the fire-breathing head of Tracking. My proposal for improving legal education is that we take up our swords and slay the demon. Without it, law schools could stop the much-criticized practice of sharpening minds by narrowing them, and instead cultivate the intellectual …
Positive Theory And The Internal View Of Law, John A. Ferejohn
Positive Theory And The Internal View Of Law, John A. Ferejohn
Faculty Articles
The purpose of this Article is to ask, first, whether positive theories of law can provide explanations of law, legal practices, and institutions from an internal perspective. H.L.A. Hart argued that in a genuine legal system people, or at least legal officials, do not obey the law out of fear of sanctions, but because they accept legal norms, internally, as providing practical reasons for acting or refraining from acting. Legal norms cannot be reduced to systems of punishment but must be understood to guide action in other ways. Are the methodological commitments of positive theory to economic modeling compatible with …

Freedom Of Association In A Networked World: First Amendment Regulation Of Relational Surveillance, Katherine J. Strandburg

Recent controversies about the National Security Agency's warrantless wiretapping of international calls have overshadowed equally disturbing allegations that the government has acquired access to a huge database of domestic call traffic data, revealing information about times, dates, and numbers called. Although communication content traditionally has been the primary focus of concern about overreaching government surveillance, law enforcement officials are increasingly interested ha using sophisticated computer analysis of noncontent traffic data to "map" networks of associations. Despite the rising importance of digitally mediated association, current Fourth Amendment and statutory schemes provide only weak checks on government. The potential to chill association …
Judicial Transparency In An Age Of Prediction, Adam M. Samaha
Judicial Transparency In An Age Of Prediction, Adam M. Samaha
Faculty Articles
The Empirical Legal Studies (ELS) movement is making strides toward understanding judicial behavior, and ELS models could become the foundation for more accurate prediction of judicial decisions. This essay raises two questions. First, what would an age of predictable judicial behavior look like? Second, would satisfying the informational needs of ELS prediction models also exhaust the demands for 'judicial transparency"? The essay concludes that a state of predictable judicial behavior, if somehow stable, would leave almost no litigation to observe; and that a prediction-oriented information policy would nearly meet the demands of today's transparency advocates. One shortfall involves the intrinsic …

Shading Facilitates Sessile Invertebrate Dominance In The Rocky Subtidal Gulf Of Maine, Ron J. Etter, Robert J. Miller
Biology Faculty Publication Series
Dramatic shifts in community composition occur between vertical and horizontal rocky surfaces in subtidal environments worldwide, yet the forces mediating this transition are poorly understood. Vertical rock walls are often covered by lush, diverse communities of sessile suspension-feeding invertebrates, while adjacent horizontal substrates are dominated by algae, or corals in the tropics. Multiple factors, including light, sedimentation, water flow, and predation have been proposed to explain this pattern, but experimental tests of these hypotheses are lacking. We manipulated light level and predation to test whether variation in these mechanisms could be responsible for the shift in composition of sessile communities …

Air Pollution, Economic Development Of Communities, And Health Status Among The Elderly In Urban China., Rongjun Sun, Danan Gu
Sociology & Criminology Faculty Publications
In Western societies, the impact of air pollution on residents' health is higher in less wealthy communities. However, it is not clear whether such an interaction effect applies to developing countries. The authors examine how the level of community development modifies the impact of air pollution on health outcomes of the Chinese elderly using data from the third wave of the Chinese Longitudinal Health Longevity Survey in 2002, which includes 7,358 elderly residents aged 65 or more years from 735 districts in 171 cities. The results show that, compared with a 1-point increase in the air pollution index in urban …

Computing technology now pervades those moments of our day when we move through our cities. Mobile phones, music players, vending machines, contact-less payment systems and RFID-enabled turnstiles are de rigueur on our daily journeys. This workshop aims to examine these augmented journeys, to reflect on the public, semi-public and private technologies available to us in them, and to speculate on what innovations might be to come. Taking as our starting point cities such as Seoul, we aim to take seriously the developments in mobile technology as well as the advancements in autonomous machinery and how these mesh with our urban …

On Corners Of Objects Built From Parallelepiped Bricks, Mirela Damian, Joseph O'Rourke
Computer Science: Faculty Publications
We investigate a question initiated in the work of Sibley and Wagon, who proved that 3 colors suffice to color any collection of 2D parallelograms glued edge-to-edge. Their proof relied on the existence of an "elbow" parallelogram. We explore the existence of analogous "corner" parallelepipeds in 3D objects. Our results are twofold. First, we refine the 2D proof to render information on the number and location of the 2D elbows. Second, we prove that not all of the 2D refinements extend to 3D.
Authoring And Sharing Of Programming Exercises, Somyajit Jena
Authoring And Sharing Of Programming Exercises, Somyajit Jena
Master's Projects
In recent years, a number of exercises have been developed and published for educating students in the field of Computer Science. But these exercises exist in their own silos. There is no apparent mechanism to share these exercises among researchers and instructors in an effective and efficient manner. Moreover, the developers of these programming exercises are generally using a proprietary system for automatic submission and grading of these exercises. Each of these systems dictates the persistent format of an exercise that may not be inter-operable with other automatic submission and grading systems. This project provides a solution to this problem …
Personalized Shopping Agent For Semantic Web, Ramani Arunachalam
Personalized Shopping Agent For Semantic Web, Ramani Arunachalam
Master's Projects
Current online shopping experience has limitations due to lack of uniform, inter- linked machine readable data across various shopping sites. This project attempts to improve the experience by employing semantic web concepts such as OWL and SPARQL. A new OWL ontology is defined for product data and real-life data from shopping sites such as Amazon, Yahoo shopping are imported and inter-linked using this ontology. A web-based personalized shopping agent is implemented to query this inter- linked database by specifying the preferences for various product attributes. Screenshots of the resulting system and its usage have been provided.
Heuristic Health Resource Referral (H2r2) Engine, Duy Vo
Heuristic Health Resource Referral (H2r2) Engine, Duy Vo
Master's Projects
Searching for health resources is difficult for many individuals because it requires domain knowledge and understanding of search engines techniques. Our system proposes a paradigm shift whereby users provide as much or as little information as they feel comfortable, and we endeavor to match them with relevant health resources. The system first attempts to identify risk factors through a heuristic engine that employs fuzzy logic and then searches for health resources based on the user’s profile. We aim to unburden the user from having to understand complex health information and sometimes esoteric search techniques. Our preliminary findings show that a …
Employee Performance Assessment In Quality Assurance, Rahul Jain
Employee Performance Assessment In Quality Assurance, Rahul Jain
Master's Projects
Employee performance often determines the progress of a company. Poor appraisals and improper assessment directly effects employee satisfaction and impair company results. Many managers rely primarily on behavioral impressions without appropriately including factual information of the actual work done. There is clear benefit from procedures that elicit and use both factual and subjective criteria for assessment. Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) is a methodology that can be applied to complex decisions with multiple criteria [29]. AHP has the capability to combine both subjective and objective evaluation factors, thereby minimizing bias in decision making [29]. The methodology also allows subjective measures from …
Towards An Undetectable Computer Virus, Priti Desai
Towards An Undetectable Computer Virus, Priti Desai
Master's Projects
Metamorphic viruses modify their own code to produce viral copies which are syntactically different from their parents. The viral copies have the same functionality as the parent but may have different signatures. This makes signature-based virus scanners unreliable for detecting metamorphic viruses. But statistical pattern analysis tool such as Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) can detect metamorphic viruses. Virus writers use many different code obfuscation techniques to generate metamorphic viruses. In this project we develop a metamorphic engine using code obfuscation techniques. Our metamorphic engine is designed to produce highly diverse morphed copies of the base virus. We show that commercial …
Adaptive Software Transactional Memory: Dynamic Contention Management, Joel Frank
Adaptive Software Transactional Memory: Dynamic Contention Management, Joel Frank
Master's Projects
This thesis addresses the problem of contention management in Software Transactional Memory (STM), which is a scheme for managing shared memory in a concurrent programming environment. STM views shared memory in a way similar to that of a database; read and write operations are handled through transactions, with changes to the shared memory becoming permanent through commit operations. Research on this subject reveals that there are currently varying methods for collision detection, data validation, and contention management, each of which has different situations in which they become the preferred method. This thesis introduces a dynamic contention manager that monitors current …
Practical Detection Of Metamorphic Computer Viruses, Sharmidha Govindaraj
Practical Detection Of Metamorphic Computer Viruses, Sharmidha Govindaraj
Master's Projects
Metamorphic virus employs code obfuscation techniques to mutate itself. It absconds from signature-based detection system by modifying internal structure without compromising original functionality. However, it has been proved that machine learning technique like Hidden Markov model (HMM) can detect such viruses with high probability. HMM is a state machine where each state observes the input data with appropriate observation probability. HMM learns statistical properties of “virus features” rather than “signatures” and relies on such statistics to detect same family virus. Each HMM is trained with variants of same family viruses that are generated by same metamorphic engine so that HMM …
