Handwriting is a skill utilized widely by adults; however, there is a lack of guidelines, information, or literature on the subject as it relates to adults. The purpose of this project was to develop guidelines for occupational therapists to use when providing handwriting interventions with adults. A literature review was conducted using PubMed, CINAHL, SCOPUS, DynaMed, and professional journals to further understand the topic of handwriting with adults and its relation to occupational therapy. Currently, there is limited research and information regarding handwriting with adults and no programs or guidelines were found to assist occupational therapists in developing treatment interventions …
What The Erie Surrogate Triplets Can Teach State Legislatures About The Need To Enact Article 8 Of The Uniform Parentage Act (2000) , Robert E. Rains
What The Erie Surrogate Triplets Can Teach State Legislatures About The Need To Enact Article 8 Of The Uniform Parentage Act (2000) , Robert E. Rains
Cleveland State Law Review
This Article will explain the protracted legal battles over the "surrogate triplets" and explore potential legislation designed to avoid such battles in the future. While reasonable minds could certainly differ as to the wisdom of the legislative scheme proposed in Article 8 of the UPA (2000), or as to some of its details, surely it would be a vast improvement over the current situation in which most state legislatures have failed to address surrogacy through statutes and those that have done so have failed to act in a uniform manner. As the Erie triplets case amply demonstrates, the state courts …
Evaluation Of The Bailey Method As A Tool For Improving The Rutting Resistance Of Mix Designs Using New Hampshire Aggregate, Felix Alexander Rivera
Evaluation Of The Bailey Method As A Tool For Improving The Rutting Resistance Of Mix Designs Using New Hampshire Aggregate, Felix Alexander Rivera
Master's Theses and Capstones
Currently the NHDOT uses the Superpave method to design and evaluate its asphalt pavements; however, this method lacks guidelines to adjust an aggregate blend that yields unacceptable mixtures. The objective of this project was to determine if the Bailey Method of aggregate blending would help improve the rutting resistance of mix designs that use NH aggregates. The rutting performances of six typical NH mix designs and two Bailey designs were measured using the Third Scale Mobile Model Load Simulator (MMLS3), an accelerated pavement testing (APT) device, in hot, dry conditions. Out of the two mixtures redesigned according to the Bailey …

Creating Leaders: A Correlational Study Of The Principal's Leadership Impacting An Innovation For Sustainability, Felicia L. Bell-Hobbs
Theses and Dissertations
Literacy reform is at the forefront of the accountability movement in the education arena today. School principals must tackle one of the most perplexing problems facing education reform: how to understand and change the culture of the school. Literacy instruction can become the catalyst for school change in the reform effort. Leadership for change can evolve within a professional learning community, in which school principals act as change facilitators, collaboratively leading the reform efforts in their schools. A person that is in the position to facilitate change within a system is considered a change facilitator. In schools, this may include …

Optimizing Network Performance Of Computing Pipelines In Distributed Environments, Qishi Wu, Yi Gu, Mengxia Zhu, Nageswara S.V. Rao
Optimizing Network Performance Of Computing Pipelines In Distributed Environments, Qishi Wu, Yi Gu, Mengxia Zhu, Nageswara S.V. Rao
Computer Science Publications
Supporting high performance computing pipelines over wide-area networks is critical to enabling large-scale distributed scientific applications that require fast responses for interactive operations or smooth flows for data streaming. We construct analytical cost models for computing modules, network nodes, and communication links to estimate the computing times on nodes and the data transport times over connections. Based on these time estimates, we present the Efficient Linear Pipeline Configuration method based on dynamic programming that partitions the pipeline modules into groups and strategically maps them onto a set of selected computing nodes in a network to achieve minimum end-to-end delay or …

Computational Monitoring And Steering Using Network-Optimized Visualization And Ajax Web Server, Mengxia Zhu, Qishi Wu, Nageswara S.V. Rao
Computer Science Publications
We describe a system for computational monitoring and steering of an on-going computation or visualization on a remote host such as workstation or supercomputer. Unlike the conventional “launch-and-leave” batch computations, this system enables: (i) continuous monitoring of variables of an on-going remote computation using visualization tools, and (ii) interactive specification of chosen computational parameters to steer the computation. The visualization and control streams are supported over wide-area networks using transport protocols based on stochastic approximation methods to provide stable throughput. Using performance models for transport channels and visualization modules, we develop a visualization pipeline configuration solution that minimizes end-to-end delay …

Self-Adaptive Configuration Of Visualization Pipeline Over Wide-Area Networks, Qishi Wu, Jinzhu Gao, Mengxia Zhu, Nageswara S. V. Rao, Jian Huang, S. Sitharama Iyengar
Computer Science Publications
Next-generation scientific applications require the capabilities to visualize large archival datasets or on-going computer simulations of physical and other phenomena over wide-area network connections. To minimize the latency in interactive visualizations across wide-area networks, we propose an approach that adaptively decomposes and maps the visualization pipeline onto a set of strategically selected network nodes. This scheme is realized by grouping the modules that implement visualization and networking subtasks, and mapping them onto computing nodes with possibly disparate computing capabilities and network connections. Using estimates for communication and processing times of subtasks, we present a polynomial-time algorithm to compute a decomposition …

Assessment Of Data Processing To Improve Reliability Of Microarray Experiments Using Genomic Dna Reference, Yunfeng Yang, Mengxia Zhu, Liyou Wu, Jizhong Zhou
Computer Science Publications
Background
Using genomic DNA as common reference in microarray experiments has recently been tested by different laboratories. Conflicting results have been reported with regard to the reliability of microarray results using this method. To explain it, we hypothesize that data processing is a critical element that impacts the data quality.
Results
Microarray experiments were performed in a γ-proteobacterium Shewanella oneidensis. Pair-wise comparison of three experimental conditions was obtained either with two labeled cDNA samples co-hybridized to the same array, or by employing Shewanella genomic DNA as a standard reference. Various data processing techniques were exploited to reduce the amount of …
Multiplicative Properties Of Integral Binary Quadratic Forms, A. G. Earnest, Robert W. Fitzgerald
Multiplicative Properties Of Integral Binary Quadratic Forms, A. G. Earnest, Robert W. Fitzgerald
Articles and Preprints
In this paper, the integral binary quadratic forms for which the set of represented values is closed under k-fold products, for even positive integers k, will be characterized. This property will be seen to distinguish the elements of odd order in the form class group of a fixed discriminant. Further, it will be shown that this closure under k-fold products can always be expressed by a k-linear mapping from (Z2)k to Z2. In the case k = 2, this resolves a conjecture of Aicardi and Timorin.

The Adjoint L-Function For Gl5, David Ginzburg, Joseph Hundley
Articles and Preprints
We describe two new Eulerian Rankin-Selberg integrals, using the same Eisenstein series defined on the group E8, and cuspidal representations from GL5 and GSpin11, respectively. Connections with past work of Ginzburg, Bump-Ginzburg, Jiang-Rallis and others are described. We give some details of how to relate our two integrals via formal manipulations.
Generating Orthogonal Polynomials And Their Derivatives Using Vertex|Matching-Partitions Of Graphs, John P. Mcsorley, Philip Feinsilver, Rene Schott
Generating Orthogonal Polynomials And Their Derivatives Using Vertex|Matching-Partitions Of Graphs, John P. Mcsorley, Philip Feinsilver, Rene Schott
Articles and Preprints
A vertex|matching-partition (V|M) of a simple graph G is a spanning collection of vertices and independent edges of G. Let vertex v in V have weight w_v and edge e in M have weight w_e. Then the weight of V|M is w(V|M) = Prod_{v in V} w_v · Prod_{e in M} w_e. Define the vertex|matching-partition function of G as W(G) = Sum_{V|M} w(V|M). In this paper we study this function when G is a path and a cycle. We generate all orthogonal polynomials as vertex|matching-partition functions of suitably labelled paths, and indicate how to find their derivatives in some cases. …
Parametric Probability Densities And Distribution Functions For Tukey G-And-H Transformations And Their Use For Fitting Data, Todd C. Headrick, Rhonda K. Kowalchuk, Yanyan Sheng
Parametric Probability Densities And Distribution Functions For Tukey G-And-H Transformations And Their Use For Fitting Data, Todd C. Headrick, Rhonda K. Kowalchuk, Yanyan Sheng
Publications
The family of g-and-h transformations are popular algorithms used for simulating non-normal distributions because of their simplicity and ease of execution. In general, two limitations associated with g-and-h transformations are that their probability density functions (pdfs) and cumulative distribution functions (cdfs) are unknown. In view of this, the g-and-h transformations’ pdfs and cdfs are derived in general parametric form. Moments are also derived and it is subsequently shown how the g and h parameters can be determined for prespecified values of skew and kurtosis. Numerical examples and parametric plots of g-and-h pdfs …
The Transatlantic Divergence In Legal Thought: American Law And Economics Vs. German Doctrinalism, Kristoffel Grechenig, Martin Gelter
The Transatlantic Divergence In Legal Thought: American Law And Economics Vs. German Doctrinalism, Kristoffel Grechenig, Martin Gelter
UC Law SF International Law Review
Economic analysis plays a major role in the American legal discourse, while its position in the German-speaking legal debate remains comparatively limited. In Germany and Austria, a widespread aversion against law and economics can be observed among legal scholars. This article advances an explanation for this divergence on the basis of two main factors. First, American legal realism enjoyed great success, whereas the German freelaw movement failed to leave a lasting impression. While legal realism transformed American legal thought and opened up the discourse to policy arguments, the predominant German legal theory emphasizes the internal coherence of the legal system, …
The Effect Of Intellectual Property Protection On Economic Growth, Andrew Jonathan Mahurin
The Effect Of Intellectual Property Protection On Economic Growth, Andrew Jonathan Mahurin
Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)
This paper tests whether stronger intellectual property protection is good for a country. It focuses on the overall effect of intellectual property protection on per capita economic growth. To measure the strength of intellectual property protection, I use the Ginarte-Park index. An education and an investment variable are also included in the models.
The models are based on simple linear regressions involving a cross-section of countries. The models consistently showed a negative correlation between intellectual property protection and per capita economic growth. Moreover, I tested to see if the effect is different in some countries than in others, based on …

Simulation Of Arsenic Partitioning In Tributaries To Drinking Water Reservoirs, Eid A. Alkhatib
Simulation Of Arsenic Partitioning In Tributaries To Drinking Water Reservoirs, Eid A. Alkhatib
Chemistry & Physics Faculty Publications
Arsenic released by bottom sediments was determined by experiments in which the sediments were artificially re-suspended using a particle entrapment simulator (PES) to simulate river conditions. Sediment cores were collected from various tributaries to drinking water reservoirs in Connecticut spiked with arsenic, and run in the PES at simulated bed-flow shear stresses from 0.0 to 0.6 N/m2. Under equilibrium conditions, the dissolved fraction of arsenic was found to range from 8.3 to 22.1 ug/1, which in most cases exceeded EPA Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) of 10 ug/1. Experimental results from these simulations have shown that bed-flow shear stress causes an …

Application Of Computer Simulation Modeling To Evaluate Business Continuity Plans, Jose Francisco Molina Garcia Plaza
Application Of Computer Simulation Modeling To Evaluate Business Continuity Plans, Jose Francisco Molina Garcia Plaza
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
Business continuity plans (BCP) help organizations plan for and withstand the occurrence of unexpected events that interrupt the normal operation of business. Managers typically develop several alternate plans to minimize the business impact of unexpected events. The problem for decision makers is that comparative evaluation of BCP is typically done using subjective judgments.
This research uses a case study approach focusing on a single organization and a single business continuity application to propose the use of computer simulation as a tool for managers to identify and evaluate different BCP prior to committing resources. In the context of an insurance firm, …
