Relative Searching Using An Ordered Token List, Anthony Rosequist Jan 2008

Relative Searching Using An Ordered Token List, Anthony Rosequist

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

Many organizations have large amounts of information, such as consumer data, that need to be processed. Traditional searching algorithms only attempt to find exact matches to particular queries. This is undesirable when data are missing, outdated, or inaccurate. Therefore, a new type of search must be developed to locate records that are considered "interesting" to the user. This research paper examines past attempts to solve this problem and explores a new method involving ordered token lists to achieve this goal. The algorithm was developed, implemented, tested, and optimized.

Luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs) generally consist of transparent polymer sheets doped with luminescent species. Incident sunlight is absorbed by the luminescent species and emitted with high quantum efficiency, such that emitted light is trapped in the sheet and travels to the edges where it can be collected by solar cells. LSCs offer potentially lower cost per Wp. This paper reviews results mainly obtained within the framework of the Fullspectrum project. Two modeling approaches are presented, i.e., a thermodynamic and a ray-trace one, as well as experimental results, with a focus on LSC stability.

Application Of The Fractal Market Hypothesis For Modelling Macroeconomic Time Series, Jonathan Blackledge Jan 2008

Application Of The Fractal Market Hypothesis For Modelling Macroeconomic Time Series, Jonathan Blackledge

Articles

This paper explores the conceptual background to financial time series analysis and financial signal processing in terms of the Efficient Market Hypothesis. By revisiting the principal conventional approaches to market analysis and the reasoning associated with them, we develop a Fractal Market Hypothesis that is based on the application of non-stationary fractional dynamics using an operator of the type
∂2 / ∂x2 − σq(t) * ∂ q(t)/ ∂tq(t)

where σ−1 is the fractional diffusivity and q is the Fourier dimension which, for the topology considered, (i.e. the one-dimensional case) is related to the Fractal …

Teaching Washington State History Through The Arts: A Curricular Guide, Rebekah Norgard Jan 2008

Teaching Washington State History Through The Arts: A Curricular Guide, Rebekah Norgard

All Graduate Projects

Students benefit both academically and nonacademically when a core subject is taught through the arts. The arts allow students to develop cognitively, extend their research skills, define their ability to problem solve, and strengthen their self-image. Personal connections and student attentiveness is increased when classes incorporate the study of the arts. The purpose of this project was to encourage the integration of arts into core subjects and provide a framework and examples of effective arts content infusion as an instructional strategy for use by Washington State History teachers.

Tort Arbitrage, Robert J. Rhee Jan 2008

Tort Arbitrage, Robert J. Rhee

UF Law Faculty Publications

The economic models of bargaining and tort law have not been integrated into a coherent theory that reflects the empirical world. This Article models the interaction of settlement dynamics and the theory of negligence. It shows that tort claims are systematically devalued during settlement relative to the legal standard. Central to this thesis is a proper conception and accounting of cost. Cost is typically viewed as the transaction cost of litigation processing. Cost, however, encompasses more than this. Each dispute has a cost of resolution, defined as the discounting effect of risk on legal valuation. A spread between the parties' …

Chapter 1. The Nitrogen Cycle, Historical Perspective, And Current And Potential Future Concerns, D. R. Keeney, J. L. Hatfield

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Nitrogen (N) along with carbon and oxygen is the most complex and crucial of the elements essential for life. Supplementing grain and grass forage crops with organic and inorganic N fertilizers has long been recognized as a key to improving crop yields and economic returns. Globally. N fertilizer is largely used for cereal grain production and accounts for an estimated 40(1r of the increase in per capita food production in the past 50 years (Mosier et al.. 200 I). Smil (200 I) estimates that N fertilizer supplies up to 40% of the world's dietary protein and dependence on N from …

The Conservation Effects Assessment Project (CEAP) was initiated by the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), Agricultural Research Service (ARS), and Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service (CSREES) in response to a general call for better accountability of how society would benefit from the 2002 farm bill’s substantial increase in conservation program funding (Mausbach and Dedrick 2004). The original goals of CEAP were to establish the scientific understanding of the effects of conservation practices at the watershed scale and to estimate conservation impacts and benefits for reporting at the national and regional levels. Other federal agencies and nongovernmental organizations …

History And Ecological Basis For Areawide Pest Management, Norman C. Elliott, David W. Onstad, Michael J. Brewer Jan 2008

History And Ecological Basis For Areawide Pest Management, Norman C. Elliott, David W. Onstad, Michael J. Brewer

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The traditional approach to pest management is to treat the crop or commodity in a particular management unit before an economically significant infestation of the pest has developed. Determining the need to take corrective action is based on the economic threshold concept, which forms the basis of most integrated pest management programmes (Metcalf and Luckman, 1975). Areawide pest management (AWPM) can be contrasted with traditional pest management in that pest management tactics are used over a broad spatial area, often treating the whole area simultaneously to maintain the pest below economic levels or, in some cases, completely eradicate it. A …

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

There has been an increase in the use of formal approaches to environmental management. Jakeman and Letcher (2003) and Jakeman et al. (2006) have demonstrated the importance of integrated models as a means of assessing the response of environmental systems to proposed enlargement options. Gunderson and Holling (2000), Cowie and Borrett (2005), Curtis et al. (2005) and Pahl-Wostl (2005) have highlighted the need for the incorporation of social and institutional aspects into decision-making processes.

Court-System Transparency, Lynn M. Lopucki Jan 2008

Court-System Transparency, Lynn M. Lopucki

UF Law Faculty Publications

This article applies systems analysis to two ends. First, it identifies simple changes that would make the court system transparent. Second, it projects transparency's consequences. Transparency means that both the patterns across, and details of, case files are revealed to policymakers, litigants, and the public in easily understood forms. Government must make two changes to achieve court system transparency. The first is to remove the existing restrictions on the electronic release of court documents, including the requirements for registration, separate requests for each document, and monetary payment. The second - already being implemented in the federal courts - is to …

Simultaneous Measurements Of Electronic Conduction And Raman Response In Molecular Junctions, Daniel R. Ward, Naomi J. Halas, James M. Tour, Jacob W. Ciszek, Yanpeng Wu, Peter Nordlander, Douglas Natelson Jan 2008

Simultaneous Measurements Of Electronic Conduction And Raman Response In Molecular Junctions, Daniel R. Ward, Naomi J. Halas, James M. Tour, Jacob W. Ciszek, Yanpeng Wu, Peter Nordlander, Douglas Natelson

Chemistry: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Electronic conduction through single molecules is affected by the molecular electronic structure as well as by other information that is extremely difficult to assess, such as bonding geometry and chemical environment. The lack of an independent diagnostic technique has long hampered single-molecule conductance studies. We report simultaneous measurement of the conductance and the Raman spectra of nanoscale junctions used for single-molecule electronic experiments. Blinking and spectral diffusion in the Raman response of both para-mercaptoaniline and a fluorinated oligophenylyne ethynylene correlate in time with changes in the electronic conductance. Finite difference time domain calculations confirm that these correlations do not result …

Imaging Of Metal Ion Dissolution And Electrodeposition By Anodic Stripping Voltammetry – Scanning Electrochemical Microscopy, Mario A. Alpuche-Aviles, John E. Baur, David O. Wipf Jan 2008

Imaging Of Metal Ion Dissolution And Electrodeposition By Anodic Stripping Voltammetry – Scanning Electrochemical Microscopy, Mario A. Alpuche-Aviles, John E. Baur, David O. Wipf

CAS Publications

We have developed a new imaging method for SECM employing fast scan anodic stripping voltammetry (ASV) to provide sensitive and selective imaging of multiple chemical species at interfaces immersed in solution. A rapid CV scan (100 V/s) is used along with a short preconcentration time (300-750 ms) to allow images to be acquired in a normal SECM time frame. A Hg-Pt film electrode is developed having an equivalent Hg thickness of 40 nm that has good sensitivity at short preconcentration times and also retains thin-film behavior with high-speed voltammetric stripping. Fast scan anodic stripping currents are shown to be linear …

Venezuela, Mary Finley-Brook Jan 2008

Venezuela, Mary Finley-Brook

Geography and the Environment Faculty Publications

Venezuela is a major oil-producing state and a founding member of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). Its leaders resist global efforts to accelerate cuts in carbon dioxide emissions, and the country's low-cost oil supply to Latin America and the Caribbean countries may stall regional transition to alternative energy sources. Venezuela has been criticized for encouraging energy inefficiency with oil subsidies, but new state environmental programs promote conservation.

Guyana, Mary Finley-Brook Jan 2008

Guyana, Mary Finley-Brook

Geography and the Environment Faculty Publications

Guyana's low-elevation coast hosts the majority of its population. It is predicted to become one of the world's top 10 most impacted nations from sea level rise in terms of the percentage of the population and extent of urban area implicated. Ranging from a low estimate of 16 percent to a high estimate of 103 percent, Guyana is expected to have one of the greatest losses in gross domestic product in the Caribbean as a result of climate change. One of the poorest countries in the western hemisphere, Guyana remains reliant on foreign assistance to mitigate potential consequences. Researchers have …

Nicaragua, Mary Finley-Brook

Geography and the Environment Faculty Publications

Nicaragua is bounded on all sides by water: to the east and west lie oceans, and most of the northern and southern borders are large rivers. Although the country has experienced growth in export processing and tourism, Nicaragua remains reliant on agriculture and fishing. The country experiences seasonal climate shifts, with pronounced wet and dry seasons. There is a tendency for flooding in the east and drought in the west. Knowledge about climate change mitigation is poorly developed within the country, in spite of vulnerability to natural disasters due to poverty, low investment in infrastructure, and poor interagency coordination. International …

Handwriting is a skill utilized widely by adults; however, there is a lack of guidelines, information, or literature on the subject as it relates to adults. The purpose of this project was to develop guidelines for occupational therapists to use when providing handwriting interventions with adults. A literature review was conducted using PubMed, CINAHL, SCOPUS, DynaMed, and professional journals to further understand the topic of handwriting with adults and its relation to occupational therapy. Currently, there is limited research and information regarding handwriting with adults and no programs or guidelines were found to assist occupational therapists in developing treatment interventions …

What The Erie Surrogate Triplets Can Teach State Legislatures About The Need To Enact Article 8 Of The Uniform Parentage Act (2000) , Robert E. Rains Jan 2008

What The Erie Surrogate Triplets Can Teach State Legislatures About The Need To Enact Article 8 Of The Uniform Parentage Act (2000) , Robert E. Rains

Cleveland State Law Review

This Article will explain the protracted legal battles over the "surrogate triplets" and explore potential legislation designed to avoid such battles in the future. While reasonable minds could certainly differ as to the wisdom of the legislative scheme proposed in Article 8 of the UPA (2000), or as to some of its details, surely it would be a vast improvement over the current situation in which most state legislatures have failed to address surrogacy through statutes and those that have done so have failed to act in a uniform manner. As the Erie triplets case amply demonstrates, the state courts …

Evaluation Of The Bailey Method As A Tool For Improving The Rutting Resistance Of Mix Designs Using New Hampshire Aggregate, Felix Alexander Rivera Jan 2008

Evaluation Of The Bailey Method As A Tool For Improving The Rutting Resistance Of Mix Designs Using New Hampshire Aggregate, Felix Alexander Rivera

Master's Theses and Capstones

Currently the NHDOT uses the Superpave method to design and evaluate its asphalt pavements; however, this method lacks guidelines to adjust an aggregate blend that yields unacceptable mixtures. The objective of this project was to determine if the Bailey Method of aggregate blending would help improve the rutting resistance of mix designs that use NH aggregates. The rutting performances of six typical NH mix designs and two Bailey designs were measured using the Third Scale Mobile Model Load Simulator (MMLS3), an accelerated pavement testing (APT) device, in hot, dry conditions. Out of the two mixtures redesigned according to the Bailey …
