Project Summary and Goals Historically, affirmative action policies have evolved from initial programs aimed at providing equal educational opportunities to all students, to the legitimacy of programs that are aimed at achieving diversity in higher education. In June 2003, a U.S. Supreme Court ruling on affirmative action pushed higher education across the threshold toward creating a new paradigm for diversity in the 21 51 century. The court clearly stale that affirmative action is still viable but that our institutions must reconsider our traditional concepts for building diversity in the next few decades. This shift in historical context of diversity in …

Wei Cheng: From An Elite Novel To A Popular Metaphor, Xi Shi
China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012
China Beat is a global operation (with posts being written thus far everywhere from Beijing to Boston, Colorado to Cambodia) but it is edited at the University of California, Irvine, and more than a few CB pieces have grown out of casual conversations held on this campus. This post, for example, began when one of us mentioned to Xia Shi, who moved here from Beijing last year to do graduate work in history, that an interesting essay on the novel Fortress Besieged had appeared in the June 12 issue of the New York Review of Books (alas, only a teaser …

Engineering A Global-Minded Citizen: The Impact Of International Service Projects On Students Engaged In Ewb, Maria Perez-Colón
Theses and Dissertations
In order to explore the benefits of student engagement in Engineers Without Borders (EWB) on participants, a blended method was utilized to study the transformative impact of international service learning projects on selected undergraduate students' global perspective. Students currently engaged in EWB, and preparing for travel abroad to a project site, were surveyed prior to travel using the Global-Mindedness Scale (GMS) to determine global perspective within the following dimensions: interconnectedness, cultural pluralism, responsibility, globalcentrism, and efficacy. Upon return from the mission, the GMS was re-administered to note changes, if any, to original responses. Pre-travel questionnaires and post- travel interviews were …
Identification Of Hispanic American Students And Students Of Poverty For Gifted And Talented Programs, Katherine E. Hageman
Identification Of Hispanic American Students And Students Of Poverty For Gifted And Talented Programs, Katherine E. Hageman
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
For decades, experts have discussed an educational gap between Anglo Americans and Culturally Diverse Americans. While this gap is apparent in scores on standardized tests, it is also observed in the underrepresentation of culturally different students identified for gifted and talented programs. A PowerPoint presentation was developed to inform both novice and experienced educators of: (a) current means of identification of gifted and talented students, (b) demographics that indicate change is needed, and (c) changes that may reduce the underrepresentation of Hispanic American and impoverished students in gifted and talented programs. It is the belief of this researcher that, with …

Performance On Natural Dissemblance Tasks In 7-11 Year-Old, Language-Impaired And Typically Developing Children, Noel Quist
Theses and Dissertations
Studies over the past several years have shown that children with language impairment (LI) have greater difficulty in social situations than typically developing children. More specifically, studies have shown that children with LI have more difficulty with dissemblance. This study was conducted to assess whether these children are less likely to dissemble in real-life situations. Forty-four children aged 7 to 11 years (22 LI and 22 typically developing) were presented with four situations designed to elicit dissemblance. Their reactions were scored and compared. The results of this study showed subtle differences between children with LI and typically developing children. Children …

State Dominance And Political Corruption: Testing The Efficacy Of An Alternate Configuration Of Institutional-Anomie Theory Cross-Nationally, Carol L. S. Trent
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Extant assessments of Messner and Rosenfeld's institutional-anomie theory (1994) have generally supported the thesis that, in social collectives where the economy dominates, non-economic institutions (i.e. the family, education, polity) are rendered feeble, unable to exert their normative controls. The cultural values of these societies place primacy on "making it" (monetary success), while at the same time placing a much weaker emphasis on the licit means of achieving these goals. The resultant state is one of anomie, conducive to crime. Messner and Rosenfeld have extended their argument stating that it is not economic dominance per se that contributes to high crime …
Building Background Knowledge In Science: English Language Learners, Sheltered Instruction, And First Graders, Laura B. Freitag
Building Background Knowledge In Science: English Language Learners, Sheltered Instruction, And First Graders, Laura B. Freitag
Theses and Dissertations
Sheltered Instruction, a strategy used in teaching English Language Learners (ELLs), can improve the educational experience of ELLs. In this action research project, one component of Sheltered Instruction, building background knowledge, was used to teach science in a first grade classroom to see if it could increase the science comprehension of ELLs. Many strategies were used to teach vocabulary during the first four days of each science unit. These strategies included setting aside a vocabulary only day, playing vocabulary games and activities, having a science word wall, reading informational storybooks, and using real objects for the students to connect with. …

Net/Work: Composing The Posthuman Self, Julia L. Mason
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The overall question this dissertation asks is: what does it mean to teach posthumans? To answer this question, this dissertation turns toward scholarship on the body in order to understand the virtual and material presence that students develop, it looks to online video gaming communities as alternative classrooms providing effective models of learning, and it investigates the circulation of service learning pedagogies within academic institutions as a marker of the persistence of humanistic values within the framework of a posthuman work environment.
The American university in general, and the humanities specifically, is struggling to make sense of its place in …
The Autoethnographic Call: Current Considerations And Possible Futures, Kendall Smith-Sullivan
The Autoethnographic Call: Current Considerations And Possible Futures, Kendall Smith-Sullivan
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This research examines the increase of personal narratives in the past several decades, particularly the autoethnographic approach. The project begins with a historical contextualization of personal writing and autoethnography in relation to the crisis of representation and other diverse socio-political shifts. One outcome of these cultural transitions was a proliferation of illness narratives, narrative therapy, therapeutic writing, and narrative health communication. Also included in this research are data from interviews with emerging autoethnographers and participant observation that occurred at the Third International Qualitative Inquiry Congress. The conference served as prism through which to view qualitative scholarship as a whole, as …

Language Diversity In Urban Landscapes: An Econometric Study, Paulo A.L.D. Nunes, Laura Onofri, Durk Gorter, Jasone Cenoz
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
This multidisciplinary study adopts econometric analysis for investigating how different characteristics determine the choice of the language used in the signs of a shopping street. We work with a dataset containing about 200 observations collected in the main shopping streets of the cities of Donostia (Spain) and Ljouwert (The Netherlands). The results corroborate the important assumption that multilingualism and the choice of the language (even in a street sign) is an individual and a social preference. Therefore, understanding individuals’ linguistic preference structures is preliminary to the target and design of proper linguistic and social policies.
Progress Realized? The Continuing American Indian Mascot Quandary, André Douglas Pond Cummings
Progress Realized? The Continuing American Indian Mascot Quandary, André Douglas Pond Cummings
Law Faculty Scholarship
To some, American Indian mascots represent strength, power, reverence, and dignity. For others, Native American mascots are deeply offensive and mock tradition and sacred culture. Historically, professional and collegiate athletic teams have unabashedly sported American Indian mascots and monikers, and it has not been until recent decades that this issue has arisen as offensive or insensitive. In the past thirty or so years, there have been many high school and university administrations that have voluntarily switched their team mascot and moniker from an American Indian to a race-neutral one. Still, some university administrations and many professional sports franchises strenuously eschew …

Cpt-Based Liquefaction Assessment By Using Fuzzy-Neural Network, Shuh-Gi Chern, Ching-Yinn Lee, Chin-Chen Wang
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Because of the increasing popularity worldwide of the cone penetration test (CPT) for site characterization, significant progress on the simplified CPT-based methods has been made for evaluation of earthquake induced liquefaction potential of soils. In this study, a fuzzy-neural network combined with 466 CPT field observations is developed to evaluate liquefaction potential of soils. The proposed model combines fuzzy theory with subtractive clustering algorithm to establish a fuzzy-neural system. The study indicates that fuzzy-neural network can successfully describe the complex relationship between seismic parameters, soil parameters, and the liquefaction potential. The fuzzy-neural network model is found to have very good …
The Effects Of Task Preference On Speech And Motor Performance Under Divided Attention Conditions, Amy Sue Leiter
The Effects Of Task Preference On Speech And Motor Performance Under Divided Attention Conditions, Amy Sue Leiter
Theses and Dissertations
Dual task performance and the interaction of tasks has been the subject of much research. When tasks are performed together they affect each other to varying degrees depending upon such factors as the similarity of the tasks, their difficulty, and whether one task is given preference over another. In this study, task preference was investigated under divided attention conditions in order to determine what effect preference had on task performance. Twenty young adults took part in this study and were randomly assigned into two groups. Each group was experimentally motivated to favor one of the two tasks – either speaking …

Closing The Research Gap: Enhancing Cambodian Participation In Clinical Research, Elsa C. Carlson
Theses and Graduate Projects
Obtaining proper sampling of a heterogeneous population remains a concern in research studies. Many studies have examined the low numbers of African-Americans recruited to clinical trials. Other studies have also focused on Latino-Hispanic disparity in research. However, there remains paucity in research involving Asian participation. This project aims to develop a nursing model of cultural immersion in the Cambodian community's culture that will foster deeper understanding, acceptance, and trust. In so doing, a research-friendly milieu of collaboration by the Cambodian community and the research community will be established. Madeleine Leininger's Theory of Culture Care Diversity and Universality is the theoretical …

Negotiating Identity In The Transnational Imaginary Of Julia Alvarez's And Edwidge Danticat's Literature, Erik R. Kerby
Theses and Dissertations
The increased contact between nations and cultures in the globalization of the twenty-first century requires an increased accountability for the ways in which individuals and countries negotiate these points of contact. New World and Caribbean Studies envision the cross-cultural and transnational encounters between indigenous, European, and African peoples as important contributors to a paradigm within which identity in relation offers an alternative to identities rooted in national and filial frameworks. Such frameworks limit the ability to construct identity without relying upon static representations of history, culture, and ethnicity that tend to privilege one group over another. In the literature of …
