Sports Metaphors As A Motivational Leadership Strategy, Kay Woelfel Oct 2008

Sports Metaphors As A Motivational Leadership Strategy, Kay Woelfel

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

In schools, the theme of sports can be used throughout the building to motivate staff and students. The students are players, staff members are coaches, and the administration are head coaches. All are necessary members of the team, and all must work together to achieve team goals. This theme kicks off the school year by having a training camp for staff (professional development) to launch the beginning of the school year. Sports-themed snacks including peanuts, popcorn, and crackerjacks and giveaways such as pompoms in school colors, pennants, and sports-themed school supplies generate interest.

Unpacking Sources Of Comparative Advantage: A Quantitative Approach, Davin Chor

Research Collection School Of Economics

This paper develops an approach for quantifying the relative importance of different sources of comparative advantage for country welfare in a global trade equilibrium. To explain the pattern of specialization, I present a multi-country, perfectly-competitive Ricardian model that extends Eaton and Kortum (2002) to predict industry trade flows. In this framework, comparative advantage is determined by the interaction of country and industry characteristics, with countries specializing in industries whose specific production needs they are best able to meet with their factor endowments, institutional environment, and technological strengths. I estimate the model parameters using a large dataset of bilateral trade flows, …

Focus-On-Form Through Collaborative Scaffolding In Expert-To-Novice Online Interaction, Lina Lee Oct 2008

Focus-On-Form Through Collaborative Scaffolding In Expert-To-Novice Online Interaction, Lina Lee

Languages, Literatures & Cultures

Synchronous Computer-mediated communication (CMC) creates affordable learning conditions to support both meaning-oriented communication and focus-on-form reflection that play an essential role in the development of language competence. This paper reports how corrective feedback was negotiated through expert-to-novice collaborative efforts and scaffolding with 30 subjects working on three different tasks—jigsaw, spot-the-differences and open-ended question. The findings reveal that text chats supported the focus-on-form procedure through collaborative engagement. Despite the fact that the experts were able to provide step-by-step scaffolding at the right moment to call learners’ attention to non-target-like-forms that resulted in error corrections, they needed to be made aware of …

All Faculty Scholarship

The legal academy has framed legal research as a professional skill, and much research pedagogy centers around replicating a controlled professional environment to allow students to learn how to do research by simulating legal practice. Although this is a valid way to conceptualize research, it is not the only way. Another way to conceptualize research is as a consumer transaction. Legal information is, in many ways, a product that information providers market to lawyers and students, as the promotions and contests that LexisNexis and Westlaw sponsor demonstrate. Once legal information is understood as a product, the process of research can …

Role And Importance Of Korean Cultural Education In Korean Language Education: A Case Study Of Malaysian Universitiew, S.Y. Rou, K.H. Kim

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

The goal of this paper is to ascertain the importance and necessity of cultural education in Korean language education. At the first phase of the research, the emphasis is on examining Malaysian students' purpose of learning Korean language as a second foreign language. Our survey reveals that many students are eager to know more aspects of Korean culture such as traditions, customs, costume and food while they are studying Korean language. Subsequently, a second survey is designed to prove necessity of Korean cultural education in Korean language education. The students' knowledge about Korea and Korean culture, their demands on Korean …

Confessing In The Human Voice: A Defense Of The Privilege Against Selfincrimination, Andrew E. Taslitz Oct 2008

Confessing In The Human Voice: A Defense Of The Privilege Against Selfincrimination, Andrew E. Taslitz

Cardozo Public Law, Policy & Ethics Journal

The Fifth Amendment privilege against self-incrimination is a cornerstone of American constitutional law, yet it faces erosion through recent Supreme Court rulings and scholarly critiques. The article presents a novel defense of this privilege, focusing on the protection of the "literal voice" and "metaphorical voice," arguing that compelled speech uniquely harms dignity, identity, and autonomy. It critiques existing justifications as insufficient and proposes a framework rooted in social science and linguistic compulsion, emphasizing the privilege's role in preventing state overreach and safeguarding individual autonomy.

"Hard Working, Orderly Little Women": Mayan Vendors And Marketplace Struggles In Early Twentieth - Century Guatemala, David Carey

Faculty Publications

During the first half of the twentieth century, Guatemala was dominated
by two of Latin America’s most repressive regimes: first that of Manuel Estrada
Cabrera (1898–1920) and then that of General Jorge Ubico (1931–44). Though
the marketplace was one venue through which these dictators sought to impose
their modernization programs of progress and order, criminal records abound with Mayan women disobeying market regulations and more generally disrupting the peace. Beyond putting the women’s livelihoods at stake, these conflicts were also struggles over ethnic, gender, and state power. As such, marketplaces were critical both to elite efforts to mold the economy, …

Dangerous Discourses And Uncomfortable Silences, Jorge P. Osterling, Shelley D. Wong Oct 2008

Dangerous Discourses And Uncomfortable Silences, Jorge P. Osterling, Shelley D. Wong

Journal of Praxis in Multicultural Education

In this paper, two teacher educators, a Latino man and an Asian American woman, reflect on their experiences in their graduate teacher-education classes after a controversial book talk and lecture about racism in higher education took place at one of the most diverse institutions of higher learning in the United States. Using critical race and dialogic frameworks, they analyze issues of race, power, and White privilege in academia and probe the reasons why, despite efforts to incorporate multicultural training in teacher education programs, discussing race can be an uncomfortable, threatening, and even cathartic experience to participants.

Community-Based Multicultural Counselor Preparation As A Site Of Praxis And Social Justice, Nola Butler-Byrd, Jesús Nieto, Maria Nieto Senour

Journal of Praxis in Multicultural Education

Recent calls in counseling psychology to embrace social justice work and mandates in the field to operationalize multicultural competencies have offered few mature examples of how this work actually looks. This article describes a 35-year-old program in a community-based urban setting which has successfully prepared over 800 counselors while integrating social justice and multicultural competencies into its core curriculum. The authors discuss the impact of the program in terms of multicultural competence, praxis, and social justice agency. The article includes recommendations about challenges that professionals and programs of this nature must negotiate in order to implement a program of this …

A Comparative Study Of Chinese And American Address Terms, Shiqi Hao, Shaoan Zhang, Fan Zhu Oct 2008

A Comparative Study Of Chinese And American Address Terms, Shiqi Hao, Shaoan Zhang, Fan Zhu

Journal of Praxis in Multicultural Education

In cross-cultural situations, choices of address terms often reflect cultural differences. Although a good number of studies have discussed address terms in mono-linguistic settings, literature directly related to cross-cultural address terms is scarce. The current study intends to investigate common forms of address terms in Chinese and American cultures. Two hypotheses are examined: 1) Differences between Americans and Chinese in their choices of address terms are governed by cultural norms such as politeness, as well as by contexts or styles, and 2) The Chinese students in the U.S., who are undergoing the process of assimilation and acculturation, tend to accommodate …

Critical Analysis Of Chicana/O Children's Literature: Moving From Cultural Differences To Sociopolitical Realities, Rosemary Gonzalez, Theresa Montaño

Journal of Praxis in Multicultural Education

In an effort to humanize the curriculum, to honor student voice and identity, and tap the cultural and linguistic knowledge of our students, two teacher educators engage their preservice teachers in the collective use of Chicana/o children’s literature. The authors describe a series of questions they designed in order to scaffold teachers' ability to analyze the extent to which literature stereotypes Chicano/a children, rejects their linguistic realities, and/or minimizes existing inequities. A series of assignments challenge preservice teachers' simplistic conceptualizations of inequality. In addition, they create a critical literacy poster/lesson plan, which can empower youth by simultaneously fostering academic competence …

The Gender Bend: Culture, Sex, And Sexuality—A Latcritical Human Rights Map Of Latina/O Border Crossings, Berta E. Hernández-Truyol

UF Law Faculty Publications

In the course of studying and theorizing about Latinas/os and their location in law and culture, critical theory has been simultaneously liberating and restraining, confining, and coercive. Critical theorists have made substantial inroads in recognizing the intersectionality, multidimensionality, multiplicity, and interconnectivities of the intersections of race and sex. These paradigms are central to an analysis of the Latina/o condition within the Estados Unidos (United States). However, much work remains to be done in other areas - such as culture, language, sexuality, and class - that are key to Latinas'/os' self-determination and full citizenship.

Cognizant of, and notwithstanding such limitations, this …

Prediction Of Biological Activity Spectra For Few Anticancer Drugs Derived From Plant Sources, A. John De Britto, T. Leon Stephan Raj, D. Abiya Chelliah

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

Over the past decade plants have become an interesting source of new classes of pharmacologically active natural products. Some secondary metabolites are also well known for their effectiveness on living species. The PASS (Prediction of Activity Spectra for Substances) computer program, which is able to simultaneously predict more than one thousand biological and toxicological activities from only the structural formulas of the chemicals, was used to predict the biological activity profile of 7 secondary metabolites. PASS predictions were successfully compared to the available information on the pharmacological and toxicological activity of these compounds.
