Speech Language Follow-Up Study: Predictability Of Early Measurements, Sarah Kazmierczak

Honors Capstones

With in the field of speech language pathology there is much research concerning predictability of children's early speech language measurements in contrast to their language level later on. However, among this research much is variable among agreement. The acquired speech language skills of toddlers aged 21-24 months from the DeKalb, IL area were assessed by using standardized and non-standardized measures. The initial testing was completed by Dr. Sherrill Morris. She assessed the early communication skills using the Macarthur Communication Developmental Inventory and Ages and Stages Developmental Screenings. A language sample analyses was also recorded. From this sample polulation, we took …

Let Her Be Taken: Sexual Violence In Medieval England, Lindsey Mcnellis Jan 2008

Let Her Be Taken: Sexual Violence In Medieval England, Lindsey Mcnellis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Rape and its impact on medieval women, as conceived by society and the law, have yet to receive extensive treatment. By analyzing not only rape cases, but evolving laws and the impact of the Church on views of sexuality and marriage and thus its influence on attitudes towards rape, this study shows that women were much more than victims and society, or the courts, reacted accordingly. Covering the years 1200 to 1250, this thesis examines secular court cases taken from the general eyre records of Yorkshire, Gloucestershire, Lincolnshire, Warwickshire, Berkshire, Wiltshire, Worcestershire and Staffordshire. Cases taken from the King's Bench …

From One Dialogue To Another: Johannine Polyvalence From Origins To Receptions, Paul N. Anderson Jan 2008

From One Dialogue To Another: Johannine Polyvalence From Origins To Receptions, Paul N. Anderson

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

Throughout the ages, one of the primary mistakes committed in studying the Gospel of John has been to read the text monologically instead of dialogically. This error has often led some readers of the Fourth Gospel to “get it wrong,” needing correction by later interpreters. Put otherwise, many an ecumenical council or more nuanced interpretation has restored the tension that had been lost by interpreters who had sided with one aspect of John’s witness without considering another. Likewise, one flaw of modern literary-critical theories is that they have often sought to ascribe the sources of the Fourth Gospel’s theological tensions …

Identification Of Learning Barriers Affecting English Reading Comprehension Instruction, As Perceived By Esl Undergraduates In Thailand, Chayapon Chomchaiya, Katie Dunworth Jan 2008

Identification Of Learning Barriers Affecting English Reading Comprehension Instruction, As Perceived By Esl Undergraduates In Thailand, Chayapon Chomchaiya, Katie Dunworth

EDU-COM International Conference

Facility in English language reading comprehension is essential for learners of English as a second language, since English is the international language of written (as well as spoken) communication for business, science and technology. In Thailand, as acknowledged in the literature, learners of English as a second language often experience considerable difficulties with reading. There are many reasons for this, but, given the importance of reading to the development of language proficiency, it is of great importance to identify ways in which student learning can be enhanced. This paper reports on a project that sought to obtain specific information from …

Neuroimaging Research Into Disorders Of Consciousness: Moral Imperative Or Ethical And Legal Failure, Stacey A. Tovino Jan 2008

Neuroimaging Research Into Disorders Of Consciousness: Moral Imperative Or Ethical And Legal Failure, Stacey A. Tovino

Faculty Articles

In this article I explore the ethical and legal implications of enrolling individuals with disorders of consciousness (DOC) in neuroimaging research studies. Many scientists have strongly emphasized the need for additional neuroimaging research into DOC, characterizing the conduct of such studies as morally imperative. On the other hand, institutional review boards (IRBs) charged with approving research protocols, scientific journals deciding whether to publish study results, and federal agencies that disburse grant money have limited the conduct, publication, and funding of consciousness investigations based on ethical and legal concerns. Following a detailed examination of the risks and benefits of neuroimaging research …

Working Paper: Spatial Deixis And Gesture In English: Adults Vs. Children, Fatima Esseili

English Faculty Publications

This study explored first language acquisition of spatial deictic referencing, this/that, in English. Specifically, this study attempted to understand people’s ability to internalize and to refer to props in a certain communicative situation. Deictic referencing is reconceptualized into real world terms according to hard science linguistics (HSL) that was established by Yngve (1996). In this study, children were compared to adults in order to test age as a significant variable in the articulation of [ðΙs] and [ðæt]. This was investigated through an experiment that involved 148 subjects (62 adult and 86 child, ages 5 to 58) where verbal and nonverbal …

Not Your Father’S Border: An Examination Of The Border In Northern Ireland And Its Relevance To The Global Change In The Importance Of World Borders, Aaron Patterson Jan 2008

Not Your Father’S Border: An Examination Of The Border In Northern Ireland And Its Relevance To The Global Change In The Importance Of World Borders, Aaron Patterson

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Humanity has long maintained barriers separating specific entities from others. Ranging from cultural, religious, financial, and racial differences among a few others, the reasoning behind borders has remained a purely human endeavor. But our current golden age of technology has somewhat shrunk, or at least reassessed the necessity for borders. The boundaries of today, while many remain in the same locations as in the past, are vastly different from the borders created by previous generations. Globalization, a relatively new term, has made communication simple and fast. The noticeable result has been, of course, better communication between locations, and thus easing …

When (Post)Coloniality Meets Transnationalism, Hsin-I Cheng Jan 2008

When (Post)Coloniality Meets Transnationalism, Hsin-I Cheng

Communication

Cultural differences are produced and maintained in numerous relations as spaces and places are. Spaces such as nation-states are made and organized hierarchically through historical agency within the parameter of unbalanced power interactions. They are imagined, contested, and enforced through processes in which multiple sociopolitical structures are implicated. In the de-territorialized age, the ways in which people "confound or reinforce the established spatial orders either through physical movement or through their own conceptual and political acts of re-imagination" are central for any research on people's dynamic acts of cultivating, identifying, and communicating processes (Gupta and Ferguson 17). This is especially …

El Uso Del Acento Ortográfico En El Español De Los Estados Unidos, América Latina Y España: Normas Periodísticas, Laura Callahan Jan 2008

El Uso Del Acento Ortográfico En El Español De Los Estados Unidos, América Latina Y España: Normas Periodísticas, Laura Callahan

Modern Languages & Literature

Philosophical, Religious, And Legalistic Perspectives On Equal Human Dignity And U.S. Free Trade Agreements, Raj Bhala Jan 2008

Philosophical, Religious, And Legalistic Perspectives On Equal Human Dignity And U.S. Free Trade Agreements, Raj Bhala

Saint Louis University Public Law Review

What would international trade law, and particularly free trade agreements (FTAs) of the United States, look like if the dominant paradigm for their negotiation, drafting, implementation and enforcement shifted from economics to equal human dignity?

First, the concept of equal human dignity has deep philosophical roots, including in the work of Immanuel Kant, the great philosopher of the late Enlightenment. The Categorical Imperative, for which Kant (among other insights) is renowned, and which Kant articulated in three formulations, helps define the concept. Further, the American legal philosopher, John Rawls, offers a formula to elaborate and apply the Categorical Imperative. Second, …

Big iDeas 2008 Proposals

This Big iDeas project attempts to single-out and correct he gap between the expectations of employers and the reality of public education curriculum — specifically, the missing component of verbal communication skills development. We will tackle the issue first-hand and develop oral communication skills in current Dallas ISD high school students through an after-school Mock Trial program at two locations: Woodrow Wilson High School and Hillcrest High School. Every moment of this project will be videoed so that a multimedia presentation or documentary can be created.

Prior Pidginization And Creolization In Moroccan Arabic, Kennetta Kathleen Aune Jan 2008

Prior Pidginization And Creolization In Moroccan Arabic, Kennetta Kathleen Aune

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

This thesis makes a claim about the processes of prior pidginization and creolization, and a process of current decreolization in Moroccan Arabic (a colloquial dialect of Arabic spoken in Morocco). The claim of this thesis is based on the theory of pidginization and creolization in Arabic as posited by Versteegh (1984). A case-study is built for the aforementioned processes having occurred in Moroccan Arabic through fulfillment of Southworth’s (1971) two principles for determining the credibility of a pidginization and/or creolization claim: (1) That the required socio-linguistic frameworks are in place, and (2) that the linguistic effects of such processes are …

The Experience Of Attrition: A Phenomenological Study Of Freshmen In Academic Good Standing At The University Of Montana, Cheryl L. Minnick Jan 2008

The Experience Of Attrition: A Phenomenological Study Of Freshmen In Academic Good Standing At The University Of Montana, Cheryl L. Minnick

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to gain clear, precise systematic descriptions of the experienced meaning of voluntary non-continuation of academic studies, attrition, after the first-year. Based on interviews with six college freshman in academic good standing, with phenomenology as a research method, the study documented ways in which college freshman perceived, experienced and defined their decision and experience of dropping out of college.

Data were collected via one-on-one, open-ended, unstructured interviews conducted to gain an uncensored account of the experience of attrition reflected by the query, "Please share with me your experience of deciding not to continue …

Material And Social Relations In Friedrich Von Hardenberg's Heinrich Von Afterdingen, Robert Earl Mottram Jan 2008

Material And Social Relations In Friedrich Von Hardenberg's Heinrich Von Afterdingen, Robert Earl Mottram

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

In an attempt to widen interpretations, this study first explores the myths associated with Friedrich von Hardenberg, commonly known as Novalis, which have resulted in the neglect of material interpretations of his works. After an introduction to Hardenberg's theory of the Self and Karl Marx's theory of alienation, an analysis of Hardenberg's most widely read work, Heinrich von Afterdingen, demonstrates how Hardenberg was as concerned with the material and the social relations among human beings and their labor as he was with their spiritual endeavors. The self-development of Heinrich, the main character in Afterdingen, is chronicled in this study with …

Feminist Pragmatism In The Work Of Justice Bertha Wilson, Colleen Sheppard Jan 2008

Feminist Pragmatism In The Work Of Justice Bertha Wilson, Colleen Sheppard

The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference

This paper explores the influence of feminism and pragmatism on the work of Justice Bertha Wilson. Inspired by a commitment to promoting equality and advancing justice, Justice Wilson’s approach to judging resonates with feminist pragmatism. This orientation is illustrated by the approach to legal interpretation that she endorsed — an approach that was premised upon the centrality of social context and experiential knowledge rather than abstract legal formalism. Furthermore, she sought to make decisions that advanced social justice, despite her understanding that there were often no ideal solutions in concrete legal cases. Thus, she made decisions that resolved specific legal …

Voicing An Opinion: Authorship, Collaboration And The Judgments Of Justice Bertha Wilson, Marie-Claire Belleau, Rebecca Johnson, Christina Vinters Jan 2008

Voicing An Opinion: Authorship, Collaboration And The Judgments Of Justice Bertha Wilson, Marie-Claire Belleau, Rebecca Johnson, Christina Vinters

The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference

In this paper, we spin the question “Will Women Judges Really Make a Difference?” in another direction. While “difference” is a big preoccupation for us, our interest is less in the question of whether or not men and women judge differently, than in the fact of difference between judges: “differences of opinion” between judges that find textual expression in the form of published dissenting opinions. Using Canada’s first woman Supreme Court justice as our point of departure, we consider the nature of judicial work. In Part II, looking at statistics, we sketch a portrait of Justice Wilson’s judicial work, attending …
