The Darwinian Cage: Evolutionary Psychology As Moral Science, Richard Hamilton Jan 2008

The Darwinian Cage: Evolutionary Psychology As Moral Science, Richard Hamilton

Philosophy Papers and Journal Articles

The jargon of evolutionary psychology has recently migrated from a few minor American universities into the academic mainstream and thence into Sunday supplements and dinner party conversations. It has even formed the backdrop to at least one award-winning novel (McEwan, 1997). Evolutionary psychology and other similar ‘biological’ explanations of human conduct pervade the Zeitgeist and, as Kenan Malik has persuasively argued, they tap into a prevailing mood of cultural pessimism. Evolutionary psychology, it seems, speaks to our desire to see the worst in ourselves (Malik, 2002).

The Cross Beyond The Wall: Protestant Christianity In Communist China, Jennifer Clapp Jan 2008

The Cross Beyond The Wall: Protestant Christianity In Communist China, Jennifer Clapp

Theses & Honors Papers

Before the days of Communist China, religions were widely accepted. This is how many religions like; Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, and Islam became present in China. Unfortunately the strong Chinese culture and dedication to Confucian principals halted this; Chinese Christians were cut off from the rest of the Christian world. This was an ongoing change and different leaders took control of China. Yet through it all Christianity hung on by a thread. When Communism was established fully, a few Protestant-Christian leaders works closely with the government leaders to establish the Three Self church and strict laws were put in place to …

Bridging The Gap: Home-School Partnerships In Kindergarten, Keenjal Pattni-Shah Jan 2008

Bridging The Gap: Home-School Partnerships In Kindergarten, Keenjal Pattni-Shah

Frank Dilley Award for Outstanding Doctoral Study

Although home-school partnerships support Kindergarten children's development of vocabulary, the alphabetic principle, and phonological awareness, the mechanisms through which these partnerships are established and facilitated with immigrant parents from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds are largely unknown. Therefore, the major research questions that guided this qualitative, grounded theory study focused on exploring how successful Kindergarten teachers defined home-school partnerships with parents, the strategies the teachers used to communicate with parents, the ways these teachers reached out to parents to create and sustain partnerships, and how the teachers used these partnerships to support children's learning. Vygotsky's sociocultural theory served as the …

An Evaluation Of Text Classification Methods For Literary Study, Bei Yu Jan 2008

An Evaluation Of Text Classification Methods For Literary Study, Bei Yu

School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship

This article presents an empirical evaluation of text classification methods in literary domain. This study compared the performance of two popular algorithms, naı¨ve Bayes and support vector machines (SVMs) in two literary text classification tasks: the eroticism classification of Dickinson’s poems and the sentimentalism classification of chapters in early American novels. The algorithms were also combined with three text pre-processing tools, namely stemming, stopword removal, and statistical feature selection, to study the impact of these tools on the classifiers’ performance in the literary setting. Existing studies outside the literary domain indicated that SVMs are generally better than naı¨ve Bayes classifiers. …

The Imperative For Teachers Of Color In The Schools Of The U.S., Amando Laguardia Jan 2008

The Imperative For Teachers Of Color In The Schools Of The U.S., Amando Laguardia

Northwest Journal of Teacher Education

Since 1986 the condition of the U.S. teaching workforce has changed very little regarding its racial ethnic composition. According to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES, 2003), the number of teachers from disenfranchised minority groups (teachers of color) nationwide is not representative of the number of students from those minority groups. For example, in 2001-02, NCES data shows that 60% of public school students were White, 17% Black, 17% Hispanic, 4% Asian/Pacific Islander, and 1 % American Indian/ Alaska Native. In contrast, 2001 data shows that 90% of public school teachers were White, 6% Black, and fewer than 5% …

To ‘Noob Or Not To ‘Noob, That Is The Question, Joey Hall, Lee Tucciarone Jan 2008

To ‘Noob Or Not To ‘Noob, That Is The Question, Joey Hall, Lee Tucciarone

The Corinthian

After watching a documentary entitled Black on White, by Robert MacNeil, we realized that many people still tend to make a distinction between white and black English. Since the documentary was rather dated, we decided to pursue this topic to further investigate whether or not the views expressed in the film are still the general consensus of the population. Some of the people we interviewed for this project did indeed express the belief that white and black English differ very much one from the other. In fact, as we began to investigate this topic, we realized that it is …

Memory And Forgetting In A Time Of Violence: Brian Friel’S Meta-History Plays, Tony Crowley Jan 2008

Memory And Forgetting In A Time Of Violence: Brian Friel’S Meta-History Plays, Tony Crowley

Scripps Faculty Publications and Research

In the 1980s, Brian Friel, one of Ireland’s most successful twentieth century dramatists, authored two plays – Translations and Making History – which were concerned with major events in colonial history. Given the context in which the plays were written – Northern Ireland was in a state of war at the time – the playwright’s choice of topics (the introduction of the National Schools and the Ordnance Survey in the nineteenth century and the failed Gaelic revolt against English rule and the Flight of the Earls in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries) was both pointed and politically contentious. Yet, the …

Enabling Synergy Between Psychology And Natural Language Processing For E-Government: Crime Reporting And Investigative Interview System, Alicia Iriberri '06, Chih Hao Ku '12, Gondy Leroy Jan 2008

Enabling Synergy Between Psychology And Natural Language Processing For E-Government: Crime Reporting And Investigative Interview System, Alicia Iriberri '06, Chih Hao Ku '12, Gondy Leroy

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

We are developing an automated crime reporting and investigative interview system. The system incorporates cognitive interview techniques to maximize witness memory recall, and information extraction technology to extract and annotate crime entities from witness narratives and interview responses. Evaluations of the IE components of the system show that it captures 70 to 77% of information from witness narratives with 93 to 100% precision. Our development goal is for the system to approximate progressively the performance effectiveness of a human investigative interviewer and to generate graphical visualizations of crime report information.

The Impact Of Directionality In Predications On Text Mining, Gondy Leroy, Marcelo Fiszman, Thomas C. Rindflesch Jan 2008

The Impact Of Directionality In Predications On Text Mining, Gondy Leroy, Marcelo Fiszman, Thomas C. Rindflesch

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

The number of publications in biomedicine is increasing enormously each year. To help researchers digest the information in these documents, text mining tools are being developed that present co-occurrence relations between concepts. Statistical measures are used to mine interesting subsets of relations. We demonstrate how directionality of these relations affects interestingness. Support and confidence, simple data mining statistics, are used as proxies for interestingness metrics. We first built a test bed of 126,404 directional relations extracted from biomedical abstracts, which we represent as graphs containing a central starting concept and 2 rings of associated relations. We manipulated directionality in four …

More Than A Native Speaker: A Teacher Training Program For Native English-Speaking Teachers In Korean Hakwons, Sunhee Kim Jan 2008

More Than A Native Speaker: A Teacher Training Program For Native English-Speaking Teachers In Korean Hakwons, Sunhee Kim

MA TESOL Collection

This paper describes a teacher training program for native English-speaking teachers who teach children at hakwons (private English-teaching institutions) in Korea. The emphasis on English as a necessary skill in the global economy has caused a kind of ‘English fever’ to sweep the nation. A massive number of native English speaker are being rushed to Korea to teach English in hakwons. The majority do not have a background in teaching English. This has caused widely publicized discontent among stakeholders such as parents and difficulties for the teachers. This paper outlines a teacher training program specifically designed to provide basic teaching …

Developmental Expectations Of English: Focus On Chad, Lisa Anderson Jan 2008

Developmental Expectations Of English: Focus On Chad, Lisa Anderson

MA TESOL Collection

The role of English within developing countries is questioned through an outline using different prepositions to explain the different areas of language affecting development. History of English within developing countries where English was spoken by the colonizers as well as those countries that were not colonized by English speakers is offered. An emphasis is placed upon English within the immediate community versus the community as it stretches abroad, as well as English as the lingual medium for education, business, and everyday life, when looking at the imperialistic tendencies of English and how has it changed developing countries. Case studies from …

Teaching Cultural Awareness Using The Four Skills, Alison Garza Jan 2008

Teaching Cultural Awareness Using The Four Skills, Alison Garza

MA TESOL Collection

The following project examines the validity of teaching cultural awareness in a language classroom and includes five readers’ theatre plays that help students explore five different countries from around the globe. The countries were determined by the nationalities of the students that participated in the project. The setting for this study was a pull out ESL program in a public school with a large multi-ethnic population. Besides the plays, there are lesson plans, activities sheets and a biography of multi cultural books for children. All activities are designed to incorporate the four skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening.

The paper …

Community-Of-Interest (Coi) Model-Based Languages Enabling Composable Net-Centric Services, Andreas Tolk, Saikou Y. Diallo

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Faculty Publications

Net-centric services shall be designed to collaborate with other services used within the supported Community of Interest (COI). This requires that such services not only be integratable on the technical level and interoperable on the implementation level, but also that they are composable in the sense that they are semantically and pragmatically consistent and able to exchange information in a consistent and unambiguous way.

In order to support Command-and-Control with Composable Net-centric Services, the human-machine interoperation must be supported as well as the machine-machine interoperation. This paper shows that techniques of computer linguistic can support the human-machine interface by structuring …

An Introduction To Narrative Therapy, Lorraine Dekruyf Jan 2008

An Introduction To Narrative Therapy, Lorraine Dekruyf

Faculty Publications - Graduate School of Counseling

Counseling in a narrative way is a way of seeing, hearing, and thinking about clients’ problems as shaped and given meaning by stories or narratives. Problems are not hard realities that permanently define people; rather, they are problem stories by which people know themselves and are known by. This separating of the problem from the person opens up space for seeing the problem and thinking about it in new ways, and opens up the possibility of authoring a better story—a better way of being and doing, and is based on what has become a narrative mantra: “The problem is the …

Review Essay: Janet Halley, Split Decisions: How And Why To Take A Break From Feminism, Ann Bartow Jan 2008

Review Essay: Janet Halley, Split Decisions: How And Why To Take A Break From Feminism, Ann Bartow

Law Faculty Scholarship

[Excerpt] “My overarching reaction to Janet Halley's recent book, Split Decisions: How and Why to Take a Break from Feminism, can be summarized with a one sentence cliché: The perfect is the enemy of the good.' She holds feminism to a standard of perfection no human endeavor could possibly meet, and then heartily criticizes it for falling short. Though Halley's myriad observations about feminism occasionally resonated with my own views and experiences, ultimately I remain unconvinced that taking a break from feminism would, for me, be either justified or productive. But I did (mostly) enjoy reading it. Halley is well …

The True Colors Of Trademark Law: Green-Lighting A Red Tide Of Anti Competition Blues, Ann Bartow Jan 2008

The True Colors Of Trademark Law: Green-Lighting A Red Tide Of Anti Competition Blues, Ann Bartow

Law Faculty Scholarship

The elevation of color to stand-alone trademark status illustrates the unbounded nature of trademarks within the judicial consciousness. The availability of color-alone marks also facilitates the commoditization of color in ways that complicate the development and distribution of products and services that use color for multiple purposes conterminously. The economic case for color-alone trademarks is severely undermined by careful observation of the ways that colors are actually deployed in commerce, which makes it clear that the trademarks of multiple goods and services can utilize the same color to telegraph the same message without confusing anyone or diluting the commercial power …
