Participation In Extra-Curricular Activities By Suburban High School Students With Emotional Behavior Disorders, Karin Dye
Theses and Graduate Projects
This study analyzes the current status of the involvement of suburban high school students with Emotional/Behavior Disorders (EBD) and their participation in extra curricular activities. Individuals who participate in extra-curricular activities are positively associated with a reduction in delinquent behaviors and show an increase in both academic and social performance. Results of studies with high school students across the United States have demonstrated that those students who become heavily involved in extra curricular activities tend to be model students and seldom get involved in delinquency and crime (Cassel, 2000). Students who are diagnosed with EBD, however, are more likely than …

Subject Relatives By Children With And Without Sli Across Different Dialects Of English, Janna B. Oetting, Brandi L. Newkirk
Subject Relatives By Children With And Without Sli Across Different Dialects Of English, Janna B. Oetting, Brandi L. Newkirk
Faculty Publications
This study examined whether children's use of subject relative clauses differs as a function of their English dialect (African American English, AAE vs. Southern White English, SWE vs. Mainstream American English, MAE) and clinical diagnosis (specific language impairment, SLI vs. typically developing, TD). The data were spontaneous language samples from 87 AAE- and 53 SWE-speaking children, aged 3 to 6 years. Data on MAE came from previously published studies. Results were that the TD child speakers of AAE and SWE presented similar rates and types of subject relative clauses within their samples, but the rates at which they supplied the …
"What Are We Missing?" Usability’S Indexical Ground, Alan Zemel, Timothy Koschmann, Curtis Lebaron, Paul Feltovich
"What Are We Missing?" Usability’S Indexical Ground, Alan Zemel, Timothy Koschmann, Curtis Lebaron, Paul Feltovich
Publications
In this paper, we describe how usability provides the indexical ground upon which design work in a surgery is achieved. Indexical and deictic referential practices are used 1) to constitute participation frameworks and work sites in an instructional surgery and 2) to encode and manage participants’ differential access to the relevancies and background knowledge required for the achievement of a successful surgical outcome. As a site for both learning and work, the operating room afforded us the opportunity to examine how usability, which is a critical design consideration, can be used as a resource for learning in interaction. In our …
A Least Bad Approach For Interpreting Esa Stealth Provisions, Madeline June Kass
A Least Bad Approach For Interpreting Esa Stealth Provisions, Madeline June Kass
William & Mary Environmental Law and Policy Review
Scholars have come to recognize the existence of certain stealthlike provisions neatly tucked within the text of the federal Endangered Species Act ("ESA"). At the time of enactment, these provisions-if not invisible to Congress-appeared at most innocuous or insignificant. As originally written, section 7 of the ESA constitutes one such stealth provision. Inconspicuously titled "Interagency cooperation,"1 the provision seemed little more than a humble procedural hoop to agency action. Judicial statutory interpretation, however, clarified that this seemingly docile procedural requirement in fact contained a formidable substantive mandate of the Act. A second stealth provision resides in section 8a of the …
Libelous Letters In Elizabethan And Early Stuart England, Gary Schneider
Libelous Letters In Elizabethan And Early Stuart England, Gary Schneider
Literatures and Cultural Studies Faculty Publications
Outside of legal history, studies of early modern libel have focused on libelous verse and are concerned with the literary and politico- historical features of the material. 1 I hope to both add to and diverge from this body of scholarship by exploring libelous letters, tying the legal ramifications of letters deemed libelous to a more extensive perception of their cultural meanings. Drawing my evidence from court cases, printed and unprinted alike, I explore defamation lawsuits with an eye to the form, function, and meaning of libelous letters in early modern English culture: the relationship between material libel and spoken …

Building Knowledge And Power With The Third Sector In Haifa Israel: A Report Of The Learning Exchange Research Project, Donna H. Friedman, Jennifer Cohen
Center for Social Policy Publications
A Report of the Learning Exchange Research Project. This report presents a model of Participatory Action Research (PAR) focused on the development of the third sector in Israel. The PAR methodology, combined with a learning exchange, intentional reflection, and community building opportunities, was used as a tool for enhancing Haifa Non-Governmental Organizations’ (NGO) capacities. The report describes the practical and conceptual impacts of this model's application in a pilot trial and discusses its possible use and importance for future participatory research and NGO capacity building work.
Networks Of Fairness Review In Corporate Law, Reza Dibadj
Networks Of Fairness Review In Corporate Law, Reza Dibadj
San Diego Law Review
The fairness doctrine in corporate law is rhetorically glorious. Courts speak of scrutinizing transactions tainted by self-dealing for entire fairness, intrinsic fairness, and even inherent fairness. In theory, the doctrine should be a boon to shareholder-plaintiffs, especially as contrasted with corporate law's usual tendency to defer to the business judgment of corporate insiders. But in cases where courts discuss the fairness doctrine, how often have plaintiffs actually won? Are their meaningful differences in the three articulations of the doctrine, or are the adjectives fancy verbiage? Are some fairness cases more important than others in promulgating doctrine? While anecdotes abound, precious …

Morphometric studies of five allopatric parasitoid populations (genus Psyttalia Walker) from coffee plantations in Cameroon (Nkolbisson), Ghana (Tafo) and Kenya (Rurima, Ruiru and Shimba Hills) and one non-coffee population (from Muhaka, Kenya) were compared with individuals of Psyttalia concolor (Szépligeti), a species released in several biological control programmes in the Mediterranean Region since the 20th Century. Analyses of wing vein measurements showed the second submarginal cell of the fore wing and its adjoining veins had the heaviest principal component weights and served as the main contributing variables in the diagnostic differentiation of the populations. Two populations (Rurima and Ruiru) were …

In most cases, parents whose native language is not predominant in the area they live in have no opportunity to choose the language for their children's instruction in schools. However, in some areas language minority families have options regarding the language of instruction (e.g., Finns in Sweden and Russians in Estonia). This article focuses on language choice from the viewpoint of these families. Typically, discussions of language of instruction have focuses on integrative issues, such as creating loyal citizens, or instrumental or practical issues, such as education or labor market opportunities (Mtes 2004). Choice, however, may have deeper cultural and …
Is A Free Appropriate Public Education Really Free? How The Denial Of Expert Witness Fees Will Adversely Impact Children With Autism, Leslie Reed
San Diego Law Review
This Comment addresses how the Arlington decision, in disallowing the recovery of expert witness fees, will adversely impact parents of children with ASD who seek to invoke due process against the school district. Part III examines the controversy between parents and school districts in providing the most appropriate behavioral interventions and therapies to the child with ASD and the reasons behind the increase in IDEA-related litigation, particularly with respect to students diagnosed with ASD. Part III also explores the meaning of a FAPE, the procedural safeguards afforded to parents of children eligible under the Act, and the congressional intent behind …
The Significance Of The Local In Immigration Regulation, Cristina M. Rodríguez
The Significance Of The Local In Immigration Regulation, Cristina M. Rodríguez
Michigan Law Review
The proliferation of state and local regulation designed to control immigrant movement generated considerable media attention and high-profile lawsuits in 2006 and 2007. Proponents and opponents of these measures share one basic assumption, with deep roots in constitutional doctrine and political rhetoric: immigration control is the exclusive responsibility of the federal government. Because of the persistence of this assumption, assessments of this important trend have failed to explain why state and local measures are arising in large numbers, and why the regulatory uniformity both sides claim to seek is neither achievable nor desirable. I argue that the time has come …

This study investigates the strategies and assumptions that college students entering an introductory physical geology laboratory use to interpret topographic maps, and follows the progress of the students during the laboratory to analyze changes in those strategies and assumptions. To elicit students’ strategies and assumptions, we created and refined a topographic visualization test that was administered before and after instruction to 26 students during the first semester of the study and to 92 students during the second semester. To more deeply understand how students think about and conceptualize topographic maps, we focused on eight individual students who were interviewed about …
Dewey On Art As Evocative Communication, Scott R. Stroud
Dewey On Art As Evocative Communication, Scott R. Stroud
Education and Culture
In his work on aesthetics, John Dewey provocatively (and enigmatically) called art the “most universal and freest form of communication,” and tied his reading of aesthetic experience to such an employment. I will explore how art, a seemingly obscure and indirect means of communication, can be used as the most effective and moving means of communication in certain circumstances. Dewey’s theory of art will be shown to hold that art can be purposively employed to communicatively evoke a certain experience through an auditor’s experience of an art object. Such a use is shown to be an extension of Dewey’s conceptions …

Cultural Relativism In The Poisonwood Bible, Laura Wind
Cultural Relativism In The Poisonwood Bible, Laura Wind
Reason and Respect
In her novel The Poisonwood Bible, Barbara Kingsolver explores this same ethnocentric missionary zeal when critiquing the ways in which Western countries relate to “foreign” countries. She creates an allegory where the Price Family and the Congolese people are a microcosm of the United States and its relations to “foreign” countries. In this allegory, Kingsolver suggests that the attempt of the U.S. to change what it does not understand can be detrimental and unethical – that the attempt to spread an ethical system becomes the most unethical idea of all.

Jean-Luc Marion’S Theology Of Eucharistic Presence, Nicholas Coffman
Jean-Luc Marion’S Theology Of Eucharistic Presence, Nicholas Coffman
School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses
This work was originally submitted as part of a phenomenological exploration for a course on Eucharistic theology under the direction of Fr. Kevin Seasoltz, OSB. The assignment parameters included research and examination of a contemporary theological issue concerning Eucharist on a graduate level of engagement. This paper includes a discussion of two distinct Marion scholars, their insights, and Marion’s treatment of the concepts of icon and idol, which are central to his conception of presence. It contains my translation of question 75, article IV in the Summa Theologica of Thomas Aquinas. This section functions as a linguistic hermeneutic device for …

The Psychological Ethics and National Security (PENS) task force was assembled by the American Psychological Association (APA) to guide policy on the role of psychologists in interrogations at foreign detention centers for the purpose of U.S. national security. The task force met briefly in 2005, and its report was quickly accepted by the APA Board of Directors and deemed consistent with the APA Ethics Code by the APA Ethics Committee. This rapid acceptance was unusual for a number of reasons but primarily because of the APA's long-standing tradition of taking great care in developing ethical policies that protected anyone who …

Complex Adaptive Systems Based Data Integration : Theory And Applications, Eliahu Rohn
Complex Adaptive Systems Based Data Integration : Theory And Applications, Eliahu Rohn
Dissertations
Data Definition Languages (DDLs) have been created and used to represent data in programming languages and in database dictionaries. This representation includes descriptions in the form of data fields and relations in the form of a hierarchy, with the common exception of relational databases where relations are flat. Network computing created an environment that enables relatively easy and inexpensive exchange of data. What followed was the creation of new DDLs claiming better support for automatic data integration. It is uncertain from the literature if any real progress has been made toward achieving an ideal state or limit condition of automatic …
