Five Chinese Historical Events That Don’T Get Much Attention, Kate Merkel-Hess Feb 2008

Five Chinese Historical Events That Don’T Get Much Attention, Kate Merkel-Hess

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

After Jeremiah Jenne recently posed a question about “the most important Chinese historical figure most people have never heard of,” I got to thinking about the vast expanse of Chinese history that is so often neglected in favor of the (admittedly sometimes more-relevant) post-49 events. In chronological order, here are my five nominations for Chinese historical events I wish were more often talked and written about. What events make your list?

1. The An Lushan Rebellion

Led by the rogue general, An Lushan, the civil war that riled the Tang Dynasty from 755 to 763 caused death by violence and …

"...With Liberty And Justice For All": Toward Tolerant Public Discourse, Zona Douthit

Reason and Respect

This paper will examine the titles of several conservative and progressive religions and political organizations to demonstrate how some rhetors are distorting the lexicon of civil religion to conflate sectarian beliefs with political ambitions. While there is nothing inherently sinister about promoting sectarian beliefs, intentionally failing to differentiate between religion and politics muddies the public discourse and can be a means to justify intolerance toward opposing viewpoints.

Sarendib's Sorrow: Sri Lanka's Continuing Conflict, Abhayraj Naik Feb 2008

Sarendib's Sorrow: Sri Lanka's Continuing Conflict, Abhayraj Naik

Socio-Legal Review

In this article, the author studies the conflict in Sri Lanka, and identifies and describes two sources of its intractability: fractured fronts and maximalist goals. The artile seeks to reveal that while the Sri Lankan governments recent military onslaught against the LTTE has been surprisingly successful, history is clear that a meaningful solution to the conflict in Sri Lanka will be found not on the battlefield but in the hearts and minds of the Sri Lankan people. The causes of the conflict are several - an analysis of these sources of intractabily involves both a backward looking appreciation of the …

State Identity, Territorial Integrity And Party Banning: The Case Of A Pan-Arab Political Party In Israel, Ron Harris Feb 2008

State Identity, Territorial Integrity And Party Banning: The Case Of A Pan-Arab Political Party In Israel, Ron Harris

Socio-Legal Review

The banning of political partise in democracies, something which seemed to be a matter of the past, has reemerged in recent years in many countries, from Germany to Turkey, from Britain to Israel, and from Spain to Latvia. The present artick tells the story of an encounter in the years between 1959 and 1965, between the pan-Arab national movement El Ard and the Israeli executive and judidal branches. According to the author's interpretation of its history, El Ard was what he calls a "third generation party" based on his categorisation of pary objecdves and means. It sought to alter the …

Pairindromes, A. Anil

Word Ways

The May Kickshaws (07-128) gave us "Pairagrams", single word anagram-pair couplets. I felt this called for some reversal-pair couplets (phrases or sentences), drawing on William Sunners' little pamphlet "The Puzzle Lover's Book of Reversals" (c. 1982, National Library Publications).

What's In? A Name! - Part Ii, Steve Kahan

Word Ways

Some readers may have been disappointed when their appellations were not among the fifty that appeared in What's In? A Name! (Word Ways, Volume 40, Number 3). To assuage hurt feelings, fifty more are now offered, divided evenly between the sexes for political correctness.

Albuquerque Words, Steve Kahan Feb 2008

Albuquerque Words, Steve Kahan

Word Ways

Miami words are those which exhibit the letter pattern a b c a b, reverberate being one such. Let us now meet their southwestern cousins. An Albuquerque word is one in which two identical triads appear that are separated by at least one letter. For example, the formal name for a thirty-second note in music, DEMISEMIQUAVER, is an Albuquerque word due to the appearance of the italicized triad EMI in two locations.

Transcendental Wordplay, A. Ross Eckler

Word Ways

The title of this book by Michael West, an English professor at the University of Pittsburgh, suggested that it might be of interest to Word Ways readers. This was confirmed by a letter from the author, who asserted that "[the book] has much to say about the historical background of many varieties of language play in which your journal specializes. When the book received the 2001 Phi Beta Kappa book award, the publicity release noted that "West ... tries to determine where and how Thoreau, Emerson, Whitman, Dickinson, Melville and others got their proclivity for extravagant puns, riddles, acrostics, anagrams …

Tourmaline Magic, Oscar Thumpbindle Feb 2008

Tourmaline Magic, Oscar Thumpbindle

Word Ways

The pale beige mineral-gem Tourmaline happens to be my birthstone and possesses unexpected magical properties as we will soon see. It is also of great interest logologically since as an isogram it splits nicely into five two-letter words TO-UR-MA-LI-NE all of which may be found in standard dictionaries. Other splits are possible, making this gem very special.
