(Re)Defining Relationships In A Mediated Context: Graduate Student Use Of Synchronous Computer-Mediated Communication, Michael P. Nicholas

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study consists of qualitative interviews with 8 graduate students about the use of synchronous computer-mediated communication (SCMC), or instant message (IM), programs in their interpersonal relationships. Participants were interviewed twice, once via an instant message program and once in a face-to-face setting. They were asked about their frequency of use, their use of multi-tasking, and the types of conversations they have via IM. Results of the interviews are discussed, with a concentration on the paradoxical nature of IM communication as impersonal, but at the same time, conducive to personal disclosure and intimacy.

The Problem Of English Language Learning And Equal Educational Opportunity - Esl: The Search For A Solution, Kathryn Knocke Apr 2008

The Problem Of English Language Learning And Equal Educational Opportunity - Esl: The Search For A Solution, Kathryn Knocke

Undergraduate Research Conference at Missouri S&T

As a result of civil rights legislation during the mid-20th century, court decisions and amendments have emphasized the need for equal educational opportunity. There is a widespread need for some sort of low English proficiency assistance demonstrated by the fact that since 1989 the population of linguistically diverse students has doubled. However, it would be difficult for a program like bilingual education to provide this assistance even only at state level given its costliness and impracticality. Over 2,000 languages need to be accounted for to achieve true equal educational opportunity. After thorough research was conducted, the solution reached was that …

The Effects Of Family Race/Ethnicity And Socioeconomic Status On Quality Of Services And Family Outcomes For Families Participating In Part C Early Intervention Programs, Paula S. Lalinde

Open Access Dissertations

This study investigated the association between family socioeconomic status, family race/ethnicity, quality of services and the impact of those services on the family for families who had participated in a northeastern state's IDEA, Part C Early Intervention Program. Data for this study came from 1,108 families who responded to a survey distributed by the state's Early Intervention Program. The survey contained two Rasch-based measurement scales designed to yield measures of family perceptions of the quality of early intervention services they had received and the impact of those services on their family. Results of the study indicated that measures of quality …

Pensar En La Habana: Literatura, Memoria Y Ciudad En El Discurso De Tres Escritores Cubanos, Axel Presas Apr 2008

Pensar En La Habana: Literatura, Memoria Y Ciudad En El Discurso De Tres Escritores Cubanos, Axel Presas

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In my thesis I endeavor to examine the influence and impact of memory -the mental and psychological processes of recollection-on the writings of three Cuban authors of the twentieth century. I have chosen José Lezama Lima, Guillermo Cabrera Infante, and Eliseo Diego because of their particularly vast and evocative literatures about the city: la Ciudad de La Habana. One of the main objectives of this work is to suggest the cultural predisposition of a twentieth century Cuban Literature that is consequential on its authors' recollections and reminiscences about the city. But, does this mnemonic-literary tendency truly exist in contemporary …

A Formal Model Of Semantic Web Service Ontology (Wsmo) Execution, Hai H. Wang, Nick Gibbins, Terry R. Payne, Ahmed Saleh, Jun Sun Apr 2008

A Formal Model Of Semantic Web Service Ontology (Wsmo) Execution, Hai H. Wang, Nick Gibbins, Terry R. Payne, Ahmed Saleh, Jun Sun

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Semantic Web services have been one of the most significant research areas within the semantic Web vision, and have been recognized as a promising technology that exhibits huge commercial potential. Current semantic Web service research focuses on defining models and languages for the semantic markup of all relevant aspects of services, which are accessible through a Web service interface. The Web service modelling ontology (WSMO) is one of the most significant semantic Web service framework proposed to date. To support the standardization and tool support of WSMO, a formal semantics of the language is highly desirable. As there are a …

“To Know Where I Have Got To”: The Postmodern Chronotope In Beckett’S Malone Dies And Coetzee’S Foe, Brian J. Mcallister Apr 2008

“To Know Where I Have Got To”: The Postmodern Chronotope In Beckett’S Malone Dies And Coetzee’S Foe, Brian J. Mcallister

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study addresses two works of fiction--Samuel Beckett's Malone Dies and J. M. Coetzee's Foe--and is separated into two chapters. The first chapter analyzes the indeterminate nature of postmodern space within the two novels as related to M. M. Bakhtin's idea of the chronotope found in his work The Dialogic Imagination. The second chapter addresses the self-reflexive creation of this postmodern space within each novel's hypodiegetic narratives and discussions of narrative creation within each respective diegetic narratives.

In each novel, characters as authors create or discuss "inner" narratives that reflect upon the way chronotopes are created in fiction …

Re-Imagining Collectivities: The Mexican Japanese During World War Ii, Selfa Chew Apr 2008

Re-Imagining Collectivities: The Mexican Japanese During World War Ii, Selfa Chew

NACCS Annual Conference Proceedings

Abstract:

The removal from the United States/Mexico borderlands of persons of Japanese descent during World War II resulted in great losses which, until now, have not been acknowledged by the Mexican or the United States government. Although their forced relocation is an event of great significance in the relations of the two countries involved in their displacement, the official narratives deny any deep impact suffered by Japanese Mexicans. However, the question of their uprooting is inextricably linked to the loss of civil rights and the Mexican government’s compliance with the United States’ requirement to neutralize internal enemies. This paper explores …

Blaxican Identity: An Exploratory Study Of Blacks/Chicanas/Os In California, Rebecca Romo Apr 2008

Blaxican Identity: An Exploratory Study Of Blacks/Chicanas/Os In California, Rebecca Romo

NACCS Annual Conference Proceedings

Abstract:

This paper explores the racial/ethnic identities of multiracial Black-Mexicans or ‘Blaxicans.’ In- depth interviews with 12 Blaxican individuals in California reveal how they negotiate distinct cultural systems to accomplish multiracial identities. I argue that choosing, accomplishing, and asserting a Blaxican identity challenges the dominant monoracial discourse in the United States, in particular among African American and Chicana/o communities. That is, Blaxican respondents are held accountable by African Americans and Chicanas/os/Mexicans to monoracial notions of ‘authenticity.’ The process whereby Blaxicans move between these monoracial spaces to create multiracial identities illustrates crucial aspects of the social construction of race/ethnicity in the …
