Research Publications (2006 to 2010)
This is a retrospective case control study conducted between 1 January 2005 and 30 June 2006 at the Hospital Tuanku Jaafar, Seremban, Malaysia. The objective was to study the maternal sociodemographics and foetal characteristics associated with premature delivery. There were 387 cases selected universally and 387 controls selected by using systematic random sampling involving every 13 cases. The patients were women who had delivered their babies before 37 completed weeks, while the control were women who had term deliveries during the same period. Data were collected using structured questionnaire through secondary data. Results showed that having multiple pregnancies (OR=8.33, 95 …
The Synergy Of Toxic Tort Law And Public Health: Lessons From A Century Of Cigarettes, Jean Macchiaroli Eggen
The Synergy Of Toxic Tort Law And Public Health: Lessons From A Century Of Cigarettes, Jean Macchiaroli Eggen
Connecticut Law Review
Toxic torts is a relatively new area of the law, but its seeds were sown a century ago with developments in modern culture. The design, manufacture, and marketing of the cigarette constituted one such development, one with far-reaching legal consequences which continue to challenge the legal system today. This Article is built around Allan M. Brandt’s 2007 public health history of cigarettes, The Cigarette Century. It uses Brandt’s book as a stepping stone to a broader discussion of current critical issues in toxic tort law. The Article begins with a review of the book, then moves into a discussion of …
Accidental Event Compensation: The Differing Philosophies And Objectives Of The Civilian And Martial Sectors, Michael Murphy
Accidental Event Compensation: The Differing Philosophies And Objectives Of The Civilian And Martial Sectors, Michael Murphy
Honors Capstones
As a result of the growing scrutiny of the military in recent times, understanding the philosophy and objectives behind the military sector’s method of disability compensation relative to the civilian sector stands as a relevant topic. There exist many similar types of disability within the civilian and martial sectors, yet the compensation levels can show great variation. This work attempts to understand the reasoning behind the differing levels of benefits by investigating the underlying philosophies and objectives applied in each sector through an extensive review of work from independent organizations such as the GAO and the RAND Corporation. This work …
Cis-Regulatory Analysis Of The Pigment Cell Differentiation Gene Polyketide Synthase, David Rogers
Cis-Regulatory Analysis Of The Pigment Cell Differentiation Gene Polyketide Synthase, David Rogers
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The analysis of Gene Regulatory Networks (GRNs) is essential to understanding the complete process of embryo development. Elucidating every gene regulatory circuit from maternal regulatory inputs all the way to the activation of differentiation gene batteries is an important step in increasing our understanding of developmental biology. In this work I study the cis-regulatory architecture of a pigment cell differentiation gene, polyketide synthase (SpPks) in the sea urchin Strongylocentrotus purpuratus. SpPks encodes an enzyme that is responsible for the biosynthesis of the sea urchin pigment echinochrome in larval pigment cells. The analysis of the promoter of a differentiation gene will …
Epidemiology And Drug Resistant Profiles Of Candida Species, In Cork Hospitals., Emma Mccurtin
Epidemiology And Drug Resistant Profiles Of Candida Species, In Cork Hospitals., Emma Mccurtin
Theses
Candida causes superficial infections in healthy individuals; however in the immunocompromised host Candida can cause invasive, systemic infections and is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality. This is not due to a more virulent phenotype but to a weakened immune system unable to fight this opportunistic pathogen. The immunocompromised population is ever increasing, due to medical advancements and more aggressive treatments, and hence is the need for epidemiological data of these potentially life threatening infections. The aim of this study was to provide an epidemiological snapshot, of Candida infections from the immunocompromised population in Cork hospitals. Surveillance programmes from …

Promoting Ethical Standards In Globalized Drug Trials Through Market Exclusion, Fazal Khan
Promoting Ethical Standards In Globalized Drug Trials Through Market Exclusion, Fazal Khan
Popular Media
With the increasing accessibility of cheap internet communication, human research subjects and concerned citizens in developing nations can be empowered to effectuate much of the surveillance and monitoring activities of clinical drug trials. For instance, WHO could maintain a multilingual website for the reporting of alleged ethical violations. A credible report could then prompt WHO officials to obtain a sworn statement from the reporter, which would then trigger an investigation into the alleged ethical abuses. Verified reports of ethical abuses can then be taken into account by drug regulatory agencies when determining whether a drug should obtain market approval.
The Burden Of Knowledge, Christian Turner
The Burden Of Knowledge, Christian Turner
Georgia Law Review
Sometimes we are better off not knowing things. While we often hear that "ignorance is bliss," there has not been a comprehensive consideration in the legal academy of the virtues of ignorance and its regulation. Though the distribution of knowledge, like the distribution of other goods, is affected both directly and indirectly by law, several characteristics of knowledge distinguish it from other kinds of property. Much has been written about the impact of the nonrival and nonexclusive nature of knowledge on its production and distribution. This Article centers around two other attributes of knowledge that combine to create a special …
Postpartum Invasive Group A Streptococcal Disease In The Modern Era, David M. Aronoff, Zuber D. Mulla
Postpartum Invasive Group A Streptococcal Disease In The Modern Era, David M. Aronoff, Zuber D. Mulla
Epidemiology and Biostatistics Faculty Publications
To describe the clinical features of individuals hospitalized for postpartum invasive group A Streptococcus (GAS) infection, a retrospective, population-based study of hospitalized patients in the state of Florida was conducted. Cases of postpartum invasive GAS infection (occurring within 42 days of delivery) were compared to women with other manifestations of invasive GAS disease with respect to their age at the time of admission. Four cases of postpartum invasive GAS infection were detected in this population, yielding a prevalence of 1.6% (4/257) of postpartum disease in this invasive GAS infection database. Patients presented a median of 4 days (mean of 9 …

The Hpv Vaccination: Necessary Of Evil, Pauline Self
UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice
This Note discusses the recent Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination, whether the vaccine should be mandated for minors and the vaccine's legal, and medical implications. Presently, there exists a unique opportunity to significantly reduce the rate of HPV-associated cervical cancer through anti-viral vaccination strategies using the HPV vaccine. Despite the apparent public health benefits of the HPV vaccine, the desire of some lawmakers to mandate the vaccine for schoolgirls has placed it at the center of political, medical, and moral jousting throughout the country. The multiple state and federal proposals as well as a state bill signed into law making the …
Gliotoxin Production In Aspergillus Fumigatus, Susan Musyimi
Gliotoxin Production In Aspergillus Fumigatus, Susan Musyimi
Theses and Dissertations
Aspergillus fumigalus is a ubiquitous fungus that causes an infection called aspergillosis in immune-compromised surgery patients (Latge, 2001, 384; Bok et al. 2006). Aspergillosis cases have increased in the past decade due to the increasing number of patients undergoing immunosuppressive therapy and receiving organ transplants (Bok et al. 2006). Although there is still disagreement as to the causative agent of the symptoms accompanying aspergillosis, many scientists suspect that the compound, gliotoxin, plays a major role, hi this study, we compared the amounts of gliotoxin produced from clinical and environmental isolates of A. fumigatus. We hypothesized that the amount of gliotoxin …
Tracing Sperm In Multiply-Mated Female Anastrepha Suspensa, (Diptera:Tephridae), Preeti Dhakal
Tracing Sperm In Multiply-Mated Female Anastrepha Suspensa, (Diptera:Tephridae), Preeti Dhakal
Masters Theses
Anastrepha suspensa females have four different sites of sperm storage in their reproductive tract, may mate with more than one male, and store sperm in differing amounts in each organ after copulation. In order to study the dynamics of sperm storage patterns and subsequent paternity outcomes, a method was developed for both genotyping and quantifying sperm in the spermathecae. Spermathecae were isolated and sonicated to remove maternal cells, and subsequently crushed between two microslides to release sperm from the capsule. After DNA isolation, microsatellite loci could be amplified by PCR for fragment analysis. A newly developed method was then used …

Phenothiazine and derivatives were tested for inhibition of SARS-CoV replication. Phenothiazine slightly inhibited SARS-CoV replication in a neutral red (NR) uptake assay. Adding a propylamino group to give promazine reduced virus yields (VYR assay) with an EC90 = 8.3 ± 2.8 μM, but without selectivity. Various substitutions in the basic phenothiazine structure did not promote efficacy. Phenazine ethosulfate was the most potent compound by VYR assay (EC90 = 6.1 ± 4.3 μM). All compounds were toxic (IC50 = 6.6–74.5 μM) except for phenoxathiin (IC50 = 858 ± 208 μM) and 10-(alpha-diethylamino-propionyl) phenothiazine·HCl (IC50 = 195 ± 71.2 μM). Consequently, none …

Macrophages are versatile immune cells that can detect a variety of pathogen-associated molecular patterns through their Toll-like receptors (TLRs). In response to microbial challenge, the TLR-stimulated macrophage undergoes an activation program controlled by a dynamically inducible transcriptional regulatory network. Mapping a complex mammalian transcriptional network poses significant challenges and requires the integration of multiple experimental data types. In this work, we inferred a transcriptional network underlying TLR-stimulated murine macrophage activation. Microarray-based expression profiling and transcription factor binding site motif scanning were used to infer a network of associations between transcription factor genes and clusters of co-expressed target genes. The time-lagged …

Sustainable Development And Market Liberalism's Shotgun Wedding: Emissions Trading Under The Kyoto Protocol, David M. Driesen
Indiana Law Journal
This Article analyzes the international emissions trading regime at the heart of the world's effort to address global warming as a means of exploring broader international governance issues. The trading regime seeks to marry two models of global governance, market liberalism, which embraces markets as the model of global governance, and sustainable development, which seeks to change development patterns to protect future generations.
This Article explores a previously unacknowledged tension between market liberalism's goal of maximizing short-term cost effectiveness and sustainable development's goal of catalyzing technological change for the benefit of future generations.T his Article presents new data and theory …
