Refocusing The Critical Gaze From Sixty Years’ Distance: Austrians’ Experiences Of The Nazi Past In Recent Historical Studies, Matthew P. Berg Jan 2008

Refocusing The Critical Gaze From Sixty Years’ Distance: Austrians’ Experiences Of The Nazi Past In Recent Historical Studies, Matthew P. Berg

History

Compared to the late 1970s, when the Austrian voting behavior was characterized by extraordinary stability, low electoral volatility, and high turnout rates, the 1980s and 1990s stand for exceptional changes and ruptures elicited primarily by the rise of the right wing populist FPÍ (Freedom Party of Austria). This volume of collected papers investigates the permanent changes of Austrian voting behavior over the past forty years and analyzes causes and consequences for party competition and the electoral process in Austria during the first decade of the twenty-first century.

What Constitutes A Natural Fire Regime? Insight From The Ecology And Distribution Of Coniferous Forest Birds In North America, Richard L. Hutto, Courtney J. Conway, Victoria A. Saab, Jeffrey R. Walters Jan 2008

What Constitutes A Natural Fire Regime? Insight From The Ecology And Distribution Of Coniferous Forest Birds In North America, Richard L. Hutto, Courtney J. Conway, Victoria A. Saab, Jeffrey R. Walters

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Bird species that specialize in the use of burned forest conditions can provide insight into the prehistoric fire regimes associated with the forest types that they have occupied over evolutionary time. The nature of their adaptations reflects the specific post-fire conditions that occurred prior to the unnatural influence of humans after European settlement. Specifically, the post-fire conditions, nest site locations, and social systems of two species (Bachman's sparrow [Aimophila aestivalis] and red-cockaded woodpecker [Picoides borealis]) suggest that, prehistorically, a frequent, low-severity fire regime characterized the southeastern pine system in which they evolved. In contrast, the patterns …

Before And After 9/11: The Portrayal Of Arab Americans In U.S. Newspapers, Cherie Parker Jan 2008

Before And After 9/11: The Portrayal Of Arab Americans In U.S. Newspapers, Cherie Parker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research project will determine whether or not Arab Americans are portrayed as members of an out-group, in-group, or victim following the events of 9/11. This study improves upon previous research by analyzing the content of newspaper articles in USA Today, The New York Times, and The Washington Post pertaining to Arab Americans. Since the majority of research indicated the mass media has a tendency to perpetuate a negative stereotype of minorities and of Arabs, it was expected that the media would portray a negative stereotype of Arab Americans as well. The content analysis addressed the coverage of Arab Americans …

Access And Lobbying: Looking Beyond The Corruption Paradigm, Dorie Apollonio, Bruce E. Cain, Lee Drutman Jan 2008

Access And Lobbying: Looking Beyond The Corruption Paradigm, Dorie Apollonio, Bruce E. Cain, Lee Drutman

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

After a recent spate of lobbying scandals involving Jack Abramoff among others, Congress passed a lobbying and ethics reform bill banning a wide variety of lobbyist-to-legislator gifts. In so doing, it dealt with lobbyist influence primarily as a quid pro quo corruption problem. But a large body of literature suggests that lobbyists have multiple sources of influence that go way beyond what could be considered "corruption." Lobbyists, for example, are valuable sources of expertise and information, and are often old trusted friends and advisors to key political decision-makers. Even if all money and gifts were banned, lobbyists would likely still …

Ot 520 Old Testament Introduction, Sandra Richter

Syllabi

This course is designed to lay a foundation for the rest of the student’s seminary career by familiarizing the student with the story of Redemption as told in the Old Testament. To accomplish this goal, the student will be exposed to the geographical and socio-historical context from which the Old Testament emerges; the genre, content, historical flow, and theological structure of the Old Testament Canon; and the scholarship which has sought for generations to understand this collection of Scripture. It is my hope that this class will provide the student with a framework for their study of the OT, while …

Manipulating Public Debate: Using The Patriot Act To Keep Out Foreign Scholars, Hasan Z. Mansori Jan 2008

Manipulating Public Debate: Using The Patriot Act To Keep Out Foreign Scholars, Hasan Z. Mansori

St. Thomas Law Review

This paper will argue that the new exclusion provision violates the First Amendment right to receive information and ideas by "blacklisting" foreigners who express disfavored political views. The Bush Administration has routinely utilized its powers to stifle dissent and to manipulate the public debate over political issues. This signifies a reemergence of the system of ideological exclusion prevalent during the Cold War. By preventing foreign scholars, poets, artists, musicians, and others with unique talents and perspectives from entering our borders, the government restricts public access to such views and information in contravention of the First Amendment. First, this paper will …

Corporate Accountability And Liability For International Human Rights Abuses: Recent Changes And Recurring Challenges, Emeka Duruigbo Jan 2008

Corporate Accountability And Liability For International Human Rights Abuses: Recent Changes And Recurring Challenges, Emeka Duruigbo

Northwestern Journal of Human Rights

This article examines the efforts of the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General on Business and Human Rights (SRSG) to identify and clarify the legal status and obligations of corporations under international human rights law. Pursuant to his 2005 mandate, the SRSG has concluded that corporations bear obligations under international criminal law but are not yet direct addressees of duties under other aspects of human rights. Situating the SRSG's conclusions in the context of the cacophonous exchanges among scholars on the subject, this work notes that the SRSG's position is partly at variance with both of the two competing positions …

Man Of Might: Brigadier Berryman And The Battles Of Merdjayoun And Jezzine, Syria, 1941, Peter J. Dean

Arts Papers and Journal Articles

As the afternoon of the 14 June 1941 drew to a close Major John Wilton, 7th Division, Australian Imperial Force (AIF), sat beneath a beautiful fig tree in the town of Jezzine, Syria, and consumed “the most delicious figs [he’d] ever eaten”. Apart from a few other scant occasions, this was the first opportunity to relax since beginning of the Allied invasion of Vichy French Syria. Wilton looked over to his commanding officer and mentor Brigadier Frank Berryman, whom he greatly respected. Here was a man, thought Wilton, whose fearless and sometimes unorthodox leadership had been instrumental in the recent …

Sustainable Trade In Pre-Colonial Asante, Karen Sanders

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

Practically, the entire area of modern day Ghana was once dominated by the Asante Empire. How did such a vast empire come into existence? This empire was able to consolidate the multiple ethnic groups within the region into one unified nation. Who were some of these ethnic groups and how were they brought into the empire? The strength of the Asante’s economy was extremely important to the longevity of their civilization. Their economic strength enabled them to procure funding which they utilized to build an army, to build trade networks, and to increase their reputation within the region. How did …

Mapping The Dispossession: Scandinavian Homesteading At Fort Totten, 1900-1930, Karen V. Hansen, Mignon Duffy Jan 2008

Mapping The Dispossession: Scandinavian Homesteading At Fort Totten, 1900-1930, Karen V. Hansen, Mignon Duffy

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Once Spirit Lake Dakota Reservation was opened to white homesteading in 1904, the turnover of land from Dakota to Euro-American hands was rapid. Scandinavians, the largest foreign-born group in the state, took advantage of this land-taking opportunity and moved onto the reservation in great numbers, acquiring approximately 25% of the land within six years. In effect, while the Scandinavians lived as neighbors with the Dakota, they also became the harbinger of the dispossession of Dakota land.

Using quantitative analysis oflandownership specified in plat maps of the reservation in 1910, this article analyzes the gender and ethnicity of the landowners. Oral …

Another Forgotten Army: The French Expeditionary Corps In Italy,1943-1944, Brook White Jan 2008

Another Forgotten Army: The French Expeditionary Corps In Italy,1943-1944, Brook White

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The French Expeditionary Corps that fought in Italy during World War II was a French army, but that description must be qualified. Therefore this thesis asks two questions: how did France manage to send the equivalent of an army to Italy if French military leadership in 1943 had no direct access to French manpower resources; and the most important question since it is unique to the historical debate, why were the troops that were sent to Italy so effective once there when compared to the 1940 French army? To answer the first question, it was a French colonial army - …

Mississippi River Towns: From Dubuque, Iowa To Hamilton, Illinois, Bonnie Jean Lawhorn Jan 2008

Mississippi River Towns: From Dubuque, Iowa To Hamilton, Illinois, Bonnie Jean Lawhorn

Graduate Research Papers

Knowing and learning about local history is considered to be important by both Iowa and Illinois State Departments of Education. School Districts have directed their teachers to teach the history of the state as well as the local community. The Mississippi River acts as a border between the two states and has played an important part in the development of villages and towns up and down the river. Living in towns that border the Mississippi River most of my life, I recognize the history that has played out in many of the locations from both sides of the river. Having …

Considering A Catholic View Of Evangelical Media, Paul A. Soukup Jan 2008

Considering A Catholic View Of Evangelical Media, Paul A. Soukup

Communication

Several years ago, the National Catholic Reporter carried a story warning readers about the popular Left Behind series of Christian apocalyptic novels. Writers in The Living Light, a quarterly publication of the United States bishops’ Department of Education, point out to their readers that the series denies a number of Catholic teachings and is both subtly and overtly anti-Catholic.1 While the staff of the Catholic bishops’ Department of Education probably wanted to prepare teachers for questions from their students who read the Left Behind series, the charge of anti-Catholicism in evangelical discourse was not new.

At the same time, evangelicals …

Prior Pidginization And Creolization In Moroccan Arabic, Kennetta Kathleen Aune Jan 2008

Prior Pidginization And Creolization In Moroccan Arabic, Kennetta Kathleen Aune

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

This thesis makes a claim about the processes of prior pidginization and creolization, and a process of current decreolization in Moroccan Arabic (a colloquial dialect of Arabic spoken in Morocco). The claim of this thesis is based on the theory of pidginization and creolization in Arabic as posited by Versteegh (1984). A case-study is built for the aforementioned processes having occurred in Moroccan Arabic through fulfillment of Southworth’s (1971) two principles for determining the credibility of a pidginization and/or creolization claim: (1) That the required socio-linguistic frameworks are in place, and (2) that the linguistic effects of such processes are …

In The Footsteps Of Orson Hyde: Subsequent Dedications Of The Holy Land, Blair G. Van-Dyke, Lamar C. Berrett Jan 2008

In The Footsteps Of Orson Hyde: Subsequent Dedications Of The Holy Land, Blair G. Van-Dyke, Lamar C. Berrett

BYU Studies

In October 1841, Orson Hyde traveled to Jerusalem and dedicated the Holy Land for the gathering of Judah. Hyde's dedication was the first of eleven formal dedications performed in the Holy Land in this dispensation, and while each one was given for the purpose of preparing the land for the return of Israel, each dedication also contained unique content. The authors discuss each dedication and the historical and political contexts affecting each prayer. They assert that repetition indicates importance, and no other place has been repeatedly dedicated like the Holy Land.

The Grim Word: 'Home' In Fiction By Graham Greene, Geoff Cowgill Jan 2008

The Grim Word: 'Home' In Fiction By Graham Greene, Geoff Cowgill

Masters Theses

Graham Greene's treatment of the subject of home in his writings is remarkably negative. Focusing on nine of his major novels (England Made Me, A Gun for Sale, Brighton Rock, The Heart of the Matter, The Quiet American, The Comedians, Travels with My Aunt, The Honorary Consul, and The Human Factor), this study explicates the ways in which home fails his characters. In this thesis, 'home' has been split into three facets: family, domicile and homeland. Each facet seems to promise benefits for the characters that don't materialize. The way in which Greene's writing promotes a betrayal of home reflects …
